J&K former Governor Satyapal Malik and PM Narendra Modi.
New Delhi: The CBI has asked former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik to answer certain queries in connection with an alleged insurance scam in the Union Territory, officials said on Friday.
Reacting to the development, Malik told PTI that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has asked for his presence at the agency’s Akbar Road guesthouse here for “certain clarifications”.
“They want certain clarifications for which they want my presence. I am going to Rajasthan so I have given them dates from April 27 to 29 when I am available,” Malik said.
The CBI had examined him in connection with the alleged scam last year.
In April last year, the CBI lodged two FIRs over corruption allegations levelled by Malik in the awarding of contracts for a group medical insurance scheme for government employees and civil work worth Rs 2,200 crore related to the Kiru hydroelectric power project in Jammu and Kashmir.
Abu Dhabi: More than 10,500 United Arab Emirates (UAE) citizens have joined the private sector in the first three months of 2023.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation announced an 11 percent increase in the number of UAE citizens joining the workforce compared to the first quarter of 2022.
The latest additions bring the total number of Emirati employees in the private sector to more than 66,000 in more than 16,000 companies.
“The UAE works on economic development through public-private partnerships and is keen to implement targeted measures to enhance the role of Emiratis in the job market, particularly in the private sector,” MoHRE said in a statement.
“We are expecting a stronger rhythm of employing Emiratis in the next two months as the deadline for achieving the 1 percent semi-annual Emiratization target for private sector companies with 50 employees or more will be June 30, 2023,” it added.

The five sectors that showed growth were construction— 14 percent, commerce and repair services— 13 percent, manufacturing— 10 percent, business— 10 percent and financial brokerage— 4 percent.
By January 1, 2023, companies with more than 50 employees must have ensured that at least 2 percent of their employees are UAE nationals as part of a government campaign to encourage more nationals to enter this sector.
Any employer who fails to reach the target will have to pay a fine of up to Dirhams 73,446 (Rs 16,41,709) for each Emirati worker who fails to hire him.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition seeking uniformity in grant of compensation to the victims of hate crime and mob lynching, and sought the response of the Centre, states and union territories.
A bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna also asked the Centre, states and UTs to inform it within four weeks by way of affidavits about the steps taken for formulating a scheme for providing relief to the families of victims of mob lynching, as directed by it in the 2018 verdict in the Tehseen Poonawala case.
It posted the matter for further hearing after eight weeks.
Advocate Javed Sheikh, appearing for petitioner ‘Indian Muslim for Progress and Reforms’ (IMPAR), said some states have framed schemes pursuant to the 2018 verdict of the apex court but there was no uniformity, while many states still do not have any such scheme.
He gave the example of Rajasthan where, in the event of an earning member getting lynched by a mob, the family gets Rs 5 lakh compensation which is reduced to Rs 2.5 lakh in case of a non-earning member.
Sheikh sought a direction to the states for formulating a uniform compensation scheme.
The plea, filed through advocate Rizwan Ahmad, said the petitioner is praying for an order or direction to bring in uniformity in the grant of compensation to the victims of hate crimes/lynching/mob lynching as the present practice of granting ex-gratia amounts by various state governments is discriminatory and contrary to the provisions of Articles 14, 15 and 21 of the Constitution of India.
It said that IMPAR also prays for an order directing the State Governments and Union Territories to provide just, fair and reasonable compensation to the victims of hate crime and mob lynching pursuant to the scheme framed by them in compliance with the direction of this court in 2018.
The petition flagged “whimsical, discriminatory and arbitrary approach” adopted by states in grant of ex-gratia to the victims of hate crime and mob lynching and the “meagre” compensation provided to them.
The plea said the compensation awarded by states in most cases depended on extraneous factors like “media coverage, political imperatives and the victim’s religious identity”.
“It is seen that the trend of awarding compensation to the victims of hate crime/mob lynching is decided based on the religious affiliation of the victims. In some cases, where the victims belong to other religious denominations, huge compensation is awarded for their losses, while in other cases where the victim belongs to a minority community, the compensation is woefully inadequate,” it claimed.
The petition said such acts were not only in violation of Article 14 (equality before law) but also a breach of Article 15 which mandates non-discrimination against any citizen on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth or any of them.
On June 29, 2022, it said, a man named Kanhaiya lal of Udaipur, Rajasthan was murdered in an alleged hate crime and the next day the chief minister, while visiting the victim’s family, handed over a cheque for Rs 51 Lakh. The two sons of the victim were also given government jobs, he said.
The plea said on February 17, 2023, the bodies of two people from the minority community were found in a burnt car. They were killed in a most brutal and cruel manner which shook the community to the core. On March 3, 2023, the Rajasthan chief minister, while visiting the victim’s family announced Rs 5 Lakh as compensation.
The plea referred to similar instances in Karnataka.

Srinagar: ‘Jummat-ul-Vida’ prayers, marking the last Friday of Ramzan, were offered across Kashmir including at the historic Jamia Masjid here with religious fervour, officials said.
The largest congregation was held at Jamia Masjid in the old city here, where the Jummat-ul-Vida prayers were offered after three years.
A huge number of the faithful also offered the prayers at the Hazratbal shrine, which houses the holy relic of Prophet Mohammad, on the banks of the Dal Lake, the officials said.
The mosques and shrines across the valley witnessed a huge rush of devotees to offer the Friday congregational prayers, a day before Eid-ul-Fitr, they said.
Srinagar Police on Twitter said, ” Jummat-ul-Vida’ prayers went peacefully and smoothly in all the mosques of Srinagar district including in Hazratbal Dargah & in Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta. A huge congregation offered Friday afternoon prayers in all the mosques.”
Last Friday, congregational prayers were disallowed at the Jamia Masjid by the authorities. However, Shab-e-Qadar prayers were allowed at the grand mosque on Monday night.
Meanwhile, Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, the managing body of the grand mosque, said thousands of men, women and youngsters offered the Friday prayer at the historic 14th-century mosque.
It, however, said the people were “once again disappointed over the absence of their beloved leader Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq who is under house detention for the last nearly four years”.
A spokesperson of the Auqaf conveyed the Eid-ul-Fitr message of the Mirwaiz to the people and appealed to them to celebrate Eid with simplicity according to Islamic teachings.
“The Auqaf expresses strong resentment against the continuous illegal and arbitrary detention of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir. The authorities should change their dictatorial attitude and release him before Eid,” he said.
The managing body of the mosque said the Eid prayers would be offered there on Saturday after three years.
The spokesperson said the Eid prayer will be offered at 9 am on Saturday, and urged people to reach the mosque before time and show Islamic unity and discipline on the occasion.
Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramzan, will be celebrated across Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, after the Shawal Moon was not sighted on Thursday.
The Islamic calendar month is of 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the crescent.
Incessant rainfall over the past few days across the Valley dampened the festive spirit of shoppers ahead of Eid.
