Rahul Gandhi to vacate official bungalow on Saturday

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was disqualified as MP after conviction in a defamation case, moved out all his belongings from his official residence on Friday, with sources saying he will hand over the 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow to the Lok Sabha secretariat on April 22.

The former Congress president was asked to vacate the premises by April 22 following his disqualification after the conviction and two-year sentence in the case pertaining to the “Modi surname” remark.

The former Congress chief had on April 14 shifted his office and some personal belongings from the bungalow.

Sources said Gandhi moved out his remaining articles on Friday evening from the bungalow which was allotted to him as an MP. A truck was seen moving out the building with he belongings.

He has been living in the bungalow for nearly two decades.

After shifting his office, he has already started living with his mother and Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi at her 10, Janpath residence, the sources said.

Rahul Gandhi was asked to vacate his official premises by April 22 following his disqualification. A Surat court on March 23 had convicted Gandhi of defamation and given him two-year sentence, leading to his disqualification.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat had sent Gandhi a notice asking him to vacate the premises by April 22.

A few years ago, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also asked to vacate her Lodhi Estate bungalow after her SPG security cover was removed.

Rahul Gandhi first got elected as an MP from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in 2004 and shifted his constituency to Wayanad in 2019.

  • North Vancouver photographer denied entry to U.S. because of conscripted military service in Iran | Globalnews.ca

North Vancouver photographer denied entry to U.S. because of conscripted military service in Iran | Globalnews.ca

A North Vancouver resident and Canadian citizen is speaking out after he was denied entry to the United States last week because of his conscripted military service in Iran.

Arash Azrahimi and his family were driving to visit a friend in Seattle on Dec. 3, but instead of passing through customs smoothly — as they had many times before — they were pulled aside for questioning.

After more than three hours, Azrahimi was deemed “inadmissible” and the family turned around. The following day, he received an email saying that all of their Nexus cards had been revoked.

“I’m going to dispute it because I don’t know what’s going on,” he told Global News.

“I was in the mandatory military service. Why did they revoke my wife and kids’ Nexus cards? It’s not fair.”

It’s been more than 20 years since Azrahimi completed his compulsory service in the Iranian Armed Forces. He withdrew after serving the mandatory minimum with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

In 2019, the U.S. government deemed the IRGC a “foreign terrorist organization,” complicating entry for anyone associated with the group, even people who had no choice.

“I hate IRGC, I know they are terrorists,” said Azrahimi, who moved to Canada in 2012 and works as a photographer in North Vancouver.

New U.S. travel rules causing concern for Canadian border townsLast week’s border denial is particularly confusing, he added, because his military service was flagged when he first applied for a Nexus card. He was granted one and has travelled to the U.S. without incident many times since obtaining Canadian citizenship in 2017.

“Honestly we had a plan for going to Disneyland at the summertime after COVID, and I don’t know what I should say to the kids,” he said. “It’s a problem.”

Azrahimi is not the only Iranian-Canadian to have been barred from the U.S. due to affiliation with the IRGC.

Since it was deemed a terrorist group under former president Donald Trump, Len Saunders said he’s received two to three calls a day from Iranian-Canadian men in the same position.

“I have to explain to them that this is strictly profiling,” said Saunders, an American lawyer who specializes in helping people visit, move to and work in the United States.

“I think it’s garbage, I think it’s something that the Americans — it gives them a bad name overseas, and there’s really no way around it.”

He said Iranian-Canadians who are deemed inadmissible to the U.S. are often told they need a visa and instructed to visit an American consulate in Canada. When they do, they’re told they don’t need a visa because they’re Canadians citizens.

Canada offers permanent residency path for families of Ethiopian, Iran air disaster victims – May 13, 2021

Scott Emerick, who practices immigration law and specializes in refugee matters, said there’s no recourse for Iranian-Canadian men when it happens.

    Story continues below advertisement

The “blanket ban” has continued under the administration of President Joe Biden, and in April, his firm filed a lawsuit in U.S. federal court asking for exceptions to be granted on a case-by-case basis.

“We’re not challenging the fact that they think IRGC is a terrorist organization; certainly IRGC has done terrible things,” Emerick explained.

“We’re hopeful that the judge will see reason and will see that a blanket ban, regardless of circumstances isn’t good for anyone, is overbroad and oversteps what the executive’s ability should be in this matter.”

Meanwhile, Azrahimi said he will use the U.S. Freedom of Information Act to find out what happened at the border, and whether his IRGC service was truly to blame.

After he posted his story on social media, he said several Iranian-Canadian friends have reached out to say the same thing happened to them.

Some stay silent for fear of being judged, but Azrahimi said he’s not afraid.

“I don’t care. I didn’t do anything. I’m not a terrorist,” he said. “I’m a Canadian. Here is my home.”

Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Friday met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to a media report.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the current issues being faced by Pakistan and the solutions to them in detail, Geo News reported.

According to sources, the meeting between former Prime Minister Sharif and the Crown Prince was positive.

Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are currently in Saudi Arabia where they performed Umrah along with their other family members.

The Sharif family reached Saudi Arabia on April 11. The PML-N chief is visiting Saudi Arabia after six years, Geo News reported.

Sources told The News that Sharif had initially planned to stay in Saudi Arabia till April 26, but his son Hussain Nawaz and his family had requested him to prolong his stay in Jeddah at his residence.

According to sources, Sharif might also hold a meeting with the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, in Jeddah.

Earlier this month, sources had claimed Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud invited Sharif who is considered closer to the royal family and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the Kingdom to perform Umrah as a gesture of goodwill, Geo News reported.

Shehbaz Sharif had told the lower house of the Parliament earlier this month that Saudi Arabia has provided another $2 billion to Pakistan in order to bolster the country’s foreign exchange reserves, The Express Tribune reported.

In January, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Syed Asim Munir, had met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries.

    [ad_1]

Patna: A group of Muslims on Friday shouted slogans in support of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf Ahmed and son Asad Ahmed here, and termed their killings a conspiracy by the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh.

A large number of people assembled at the Jama mosque near Patna Junction to offer “Alvida Ka Namaz” on the last day of Ramzan month. After the prayers, a section of them came out on the roads and shouted slogans of “Shaheed Atiq Ahmed Amar Rahe, Ashraf Ahmed Amar Rahe, and Asad Ahmed Amar Rahe”. They have also shouted slogans against the Centre and the UP government.

Rais Ghaznavi, one of the protesters, said: “Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath government is responsible for the murder of Atiq Ahmed, his brother, and son. They have used criminals to murder them in a planned way. The state government, UP police, media and court are involved in the conspiracy.”

Asked whether Atiq Ahmed was a criminal, he said: “There are law and the courts in the country. If the court would give the death penalty to them, we have no objection to it. But the way criminals were used to kill the brothers are objectionable. The court had given the remand to Uttar Pradesh Police and it was their responsibility to provide them with security. Three persons came in and they murdered the two in a planned way.”

“We have prayed to Allah to accept the martyrdom of Shaheed Atiq Ahmed and his brother,” he added.

  • Biden’s Earth Day order aims to ease pollution in poor communities

Biden’s Earth Day order aims to ease pollution in poor communities

    [ad_1]

    image

The new actions could become especially significant as Biden’s climate agenda pushes the implementation of a host of clean-energy projects that raise local pollution concerns, including mineral mines, battery factories and carbon dioxide pipelines.

The executive order will be released a day before Earth Day in front of leaders from predominantly low-income and minority communities. In 2020, these activists helped shape his climate, environmental and social justice agenda while driving enthusiasm for his initial White House bid.

“Those are the groups that came out for this administration and those are the communities that I think the administration will look to again to form a coalition of communities that he will rely on in the next cycle,” Ana Baptista, an adviser to community environmental groups who was invited to the White House event, said in an interview. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence. This is his base.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Friday that the order “is a continuation of what [Biden has] promised the American people.”

“He’s going to sign a new executive order making environmental justice the mission of every federal agency,” she said. “When you think about that being the DNA of the administration, I think that’s an important piece here.”

Biden’s new order will offer direction to federal agencies on how to work with communities early in projects’ development. It will also tell them to improve their collection and use of data on the “cumulative impacts” of an area’s environmental and health problems when weighing decisions on infrastructure such as pipelines, waste incinerators, chemical processing facilities and highways.

Under current procedures, regulators typically assess pollution from new facilities or projects on a plant-by-plant basis rather than in conjunction with existing emissions from other sources. This method underestimates the health risks, community advocates say.

By instructing agencies to research and incorporate new data on those cumulative impacts and involving communities early in the process, Biden marries two of the “four historic crises” he identified on the campaign trail in 2020: climate change and racial inequality. Most people who face outsized health and climate vulnerabilities from concentrated pollution sources are people of color and low-income households.

The order comes as the Biden administration attempts to strike a contrast with House Republicans. They are pushing provisions that would put deadlines on environmental reviews for energy infrastructure projects, expand oil and gas drilling and exports, and slash chunks of clean energy tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act, Democrats’ massive climate legislation.

The White House and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in recent days have sniped at each other over negotiations on lifting United States borrowing limits, a standoff that could have major implications for the U.S. and global economy. McCarthy on Wednesday proposed passing his caucus’ energy bill, H.R. 1 (118), in exchange for a one-year debt ceiling increase, as Democrats accused Republicans of turning what had once been a fairly routine procedural vote into hostage-taking.

“Speaker McCarthy and his extreme caucus’ proposals, including H.R. 1, would be a climate and health disaster that President Biden won’t allow on his watch,” a White House official said in a statement.

Baptista, who is also an associate professor at The New School in New York City, said Biden’s order could have major implications for areas already brimming with heavy industry where residents are suffering health risks.

But she said its effectiveness will depend on political will. It will be up to agencies, for example, to craft methodologies that help them decide whether to deny permits because of pervasive health and environmental disparities.

Raul Garcia, vice president of policy and legislation with the environmental group Earthjustice, said Biden’s executive order “gives us high hopes” that the federal government would curb new pollution in communities already bearing a disproportionate environmental burden. Weighing various sources of pollution in aggregate rather than individually should raise the bar for pollution in a particular place because “people on the ground don’t experience pollution pollutant by pollutant,” he said.

Still, implementing the order across the federal government will require hard work, Garcia said.

Recent decisions by the administration would exacerbate environmental and health inequalities for some communities, he said, such as the Interior Department’s approval last month of the Willow oil project in Alaska. He also criticized the White House embrace last year of a bill from Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) that would have changed environmental review laws to speed permitting for energy projects.

“On its merits, it’s something the country has needed for a very long time,” Garcia said of the new executive order. “At the same time, it does come on the heels of very dangerous decisions coming out of the Biden administration. We have to analyze the whole of the thread of decisions as we’re reacting to this.”

Biden has nonetheless made eliminating environmental inequalities central to his climate and energy agenda, including the IRA. He has pledged that at least 40 percent of clean energy and climate benefits will flow to environmentally overburdened communities to correct historical inequalities and underinvestment. Republicans have proposed cutting one of his administration’s signature programs for driving clean energy investment to poorer communities — a $27 billion green bank created by the IRA.

While his administration set lofty goals, the White House has taken criticism from many advocates in the environmental justice movement, which seeks to address systemic imbalances in the way pollution and other harms burden low-income communities and people of color. They have accused the Biden administration of failing to properly staff its environmental justice initiatives, and have sought more transparent accounting of how the administration is reaching its 40-percent goal.

The activists have also slammed the subsidies for carbon capture and hydrogen power found in the IRA and in 2021’s bipartisan infrastructure law.

Friday’s actions, however, address a key concern for the movement, as asking agencies to consider the totality of already-present pollution and health risks has been a pillar of its agenda since its infancy.

That push took on increased attention in recent years in Congress. Getting the federal government to more seriously assess the cumulative impacts of pollution was also the primary goal for the late Rep. Donald McEachin (D-Va.), an early Biden supporter whose input shaped the then-candidate’s platform on environmental justice. McEachin sponsored the Environmental Justice For All Act, H.R. 1705 (118) — which now bears his name — along with House Natural Resources Committee ranking member Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.). That bill would require agencies to consider cumulative impacts.

The moves announced Friday also answer other concerns activists wanted the White House to address.

The order creates a White House Office of Environmental Justice to coordinate and implement efforts across the federal government, although a White House fact sheet did not specify how many people will work for it. The office will be housed inside the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

The Biden administration will also unveil a scorecard to evaluate agencies’ environmental justice progress and detailed new programs at the Commerce Department, National Science Foundation and NASA that qualify for Biden’s 40-percent pledge.
