Trump storms into Florida to oust rival DeSantis from 2024 race

    [ad_1]

Washington: Even as the Republican Party is still weighing in options between former US President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump is wasting no time to oust his rival DeSantis from the race in the 2024 primaries drumming up support for himself on the Governor’s home turf.

Republican Congressman Michael Waltz, who replaced DeSantis in the House, made it clear on Thursday that he won’t be supporting his predecessor’s expected run for the White House. He has endorsed Trump.

The Combat-decorated Green Beret Waltz has virtually waltzed his way to join as many as 11 of the 20-member Florida Republican delegation that has backed Trump.

    MS Education Academy

Trump has also unveiled the endorsements of Representatives Gus Bilirakis and Carlos Gimenez in a fundraising email on Wednesday shaking DeSantis out of his comfort zone.

Waltz, media reports said, has over the years carefully threaded the needle when it comes to Trump, avoiding any criticism of Trump, simultaneously rejecting and voting against policies pushed by his administration. But he announced he was backing Trump in 2024 on Thursday morning.

“We need bold & experienced leadership back in the White House. That’s why I’m proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for president,” Waltz tweeted.

Meanwhile, DeSantis reached Washington to network with influential Republicans prior to an expected presidential run, but the former President has methodically racked up endorsements from Florida in a major blow to the Governor’s 2024 prospects.

Trump has pre-empted DeSaantish even before he could get his campaign off the ground, political observers said in their analysis of fast paced political developments. .

“I generally don’t put a lot of weight on endorsements. At the same time though, when your calling card is Florida like it is for Ron, and your folks are defecting in your own backyard, that’s never a good sign,” Ford O’Connell, a Florida-based GOP strategist, said.

It’s quite apparent that Trump’s campaign aimed at knocking out the plank from under DeSantis’s legs before he can be really up and running.

The sole Florida member, Laurel Lee, the governor’s former secretary of state, endorsed DeSantis at his Capitol Hill event this week.

“As Ron DeSantis Secretary of State, I had the honour of witnessing first hand his unparalleled leadership under pressure, his chapter and his commitment to core conservative principles,” Lee said in a statement.

“It was my honour to serve in his administration and it is my honour today to endorse him for president of the US.”

Republican sources claimed Trump is scheduled to host a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago resort Thursday night for all Florida Republicans, who have endorsed his White House bid, soon after DeSantis held his reception in Washington, D.C.

Byron Donalds, the closest to DeSantis of any Republican in the House delegation, has literally dropped a bomb over DeSantis while endorsing Trump.

At one stage, the DeSantis loyalist had called him “America’s governor”.

The governor also appointed Donalds’ wife to the Florida Gulf University board of trustees in March 2022.

“It felt like a small little bomb detonated in our state here when some within DeSantis’s operation, not the governor himself, started frantically reaching out to other Florida members who had yet to endorse,” a Republican political strategist said.

While DeSantis’ political strategist Ron Tyson was reaching out to the Florida Republicans for support, most of them were offended.

DeSantis did not approach them directly, even as Trump took the trouble of personally meeting the Florida members to garner support, which he has managed to get, reports said.

When DeSantis was in Congress, he was a loner, with not much of a network with the politicians inWashington D.C.

“I think the way I’d describe Governor DeSantis is transactional. He is only out for himself, and that has rubbed many of my colleagues and myself the wrong way,” a Florida Republican who recently endorsed Trump but desired anonymity.

Aides working with Republicans in the delegation claimed they found it difficult to get the Governor on the phone to discuss key issues in their districts.

A poll from Yahoo News/YouGov, conducted April 14-17, showed Trump leading DeSantis by 16 percentage points (52 per cent to 36 per cent).

But two weeks ago, the former president led DeSantis by 26 percentage points (57 per cent to 31 per cent). A recent University of New Hampshire poll, which found DeSantis leading Trump by 12 points in January, now finds Trump leading DeSantis by 20 points in April, Politico reported.

There are still a number of Florida lawmakers who are keeping their options open such as Representatives Kat Cammack, Maria Elvira Salazar, and Mario Diaz-Balart.

A number of political strategists and consultants in the state are doing the same, The Washington Examiner said.

Some Republicans in the state are alarmed over Trump’s endorsements and wanted members to set aside their personal feelings and assess which of the two candidates is most likely to win the general election in 2024.

Former Representative Francis Rooney, a known Trump critic retired in 2021, said: “Trump cannot win the general election. It’s not going to happen. It didn’t work in the midterms. We had a bunch of defective candidates, election deniers, they didn’t win. What we should have had was a 20-seat majority, and that’s not what happened.”

UK Parliament panel criticises lack of information on FTA talks with India

    [ad_1]

London: A cross-party Parliament committee in charge of scrutinising the UK government’s trade affairs on Friday strongly criticised the lack of information provided around Britain’s ongoing negotiations with India for a free trade agreement (FTA).

The House of Commons International Trade Committee, which is set to be dissolved next week to make way for a new Business and Trade Committee in keeping with the creation of the new merged department by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, said in many cases it gleaned more detail on the talks from reports in the Indian media often citing unnamed Indian government officials.

India and the UK are negotiating an FTA to enhance the bilateral trading relationship worth 34 billion pounds in 2022, with the eighth round of negotiations concluding in New Delhi at the end of last month and the next round expected in the coming weeks.

    MS Education Academy

“Parliament must be kept more fully informed about the negotiations. It cannot be right that we have obtained more details from the Indian media than we have from the UK government,” said Scottish National Party MP Angus Brendan MacNeil, Chair of the International Trade Committee.

“A trade deal with India is an opportunity to enhance our trading relationship with the fifth-largest economy in the world. But this agreement must not come at any cost.

“As our report highlights, there are important issues at stake, including potential impacts on NHS drug costs, human and labour rights, gender equality and pesticide standards,” he said.

In its report entitled UK trade negotiations: Agreement with India’, the committee welcomed the Sunak-led government’s decision to not set any new deadline for the deal after former prime minister Boris Johnson’s “widely trailed deadline to get a deal with India done by Diwali” last year.

“We welcome the fact that the government is no longer putting arbitrary deadlines on trade negotiations. While the Diwali date was unrealistic, it is positive that government has adopted an approach that evaluates the benefit of the trade deal before finalising any agreement,” the report notes.

One issue highlighted in the report is the need to reconcile the UK government’s wish to see India’s patent laws tightened to benefit UK drug companies with the need to maintain the state-funded National Health Service (NHS) access to cheap generic drugs produced in India.

The Committee also notes possible implications from the deal for standards and checks regarding the quality and safety of goods, including food products and medicines.

Its report suggests the possibility of attaching to any trade liberalisation in the deal the condition that India implement UN and International Labour Organisation human rights conventions, and showing that goods meet environmental sustainability and animal welfare requirements.

The Committee said that its analysis of the UK-India talks is being placed on the record by the member MPs for both the government and the successor Business and Trade Committee to pick up and implement.

US dollar, UK pound, Saudi riyal to INR exchange rates on April 21

    [ad_1]

The exchange rates of the US dollar, UK pound, Saudi riyal, UAE’s Dirham, Australian dollar, and other currencies to Indian rupees depend on demand and supply.

Following are the exchange rates as on April 21, 2023.

    Factors that affect exchange rates

Following are some of the factors that affect exchange rates.

    MS Education Academy

    Inflation
    Interest rates
    Flow of capital
    Liquidity
    Current Account Deficits

Inflation: It is an important factor in the exchange rate calculation. As higher the inflation, the lower the currency value, rupee depreciates with the rise in inflation. Rupee appreciates in case of a fall in inflation.

Interest rate: As global investors who look for fixed income will always get attracted to countries that offer higher interest rates, which contributes to the appreciation/depreciation of the Indian rupee.

Flow of capital: As the inflow of capital will result in a rise in demand for the rupee value, it appreciates the rupee. The opposite happens when there is a rise in the outflow of capital.

Liquidity: It is the money supply in the market. With the rise in the money supply, the rupee loses its value and it results in the depreciation of the currency. If the money supply in the market decreases, the rupee appreciates.

Current Account Deficits: It represents that a country is importing goods valued more that the goods it is exporting. This imbalance results in a fall in the value of the currency.

CAD depreciates the currency whereas, Current Account Surplus appreciates the currency.

Akal Takht Jathedar, SGPC criticise authorities for stopping Amritpal’s wife at airport

    [ad_1]

Amritsar: The Akal Takht Jathedar and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Friday criticises the authorities for stopping fugitive radical preacher Amritpal Singh’s wife Kirandeep Kaur at an airport here from boarding a flight to the UK.

In a video statement issued here, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh said that stopping Kaur at an airport in Amritsar was not right from any angle as she was headed to her parental home.

Governments shouldn’t create an atmosphere of panic in the region and Kaur should not have been stopped, said the Jathedar of Akal Takht, which is the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs.

    MS Education Academy

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex religious body of the Sikhs, also condemned the act of stopping Kaur at the international airport.

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami alleged that the Punjab government and the police administration are creating an atmosphere of terror among the youth.

Kaur was stopped from boarding a flight to London at the Sri Guru Ram Dass International Airport here on Thursday.

She was questioned by the immigration authorities and some other officials for more than three hours and thereafter, asked to return along with some relatives who had come to see her off at the airport.

Police had visited Kaur’s house numerous times earlier as well and questioned her and her family, Singh said.

“Moreover, she is a British national. She didn’t commit any crime and if the government wants to ask or enquire anything from her, they should respectfully visit her residence,” said the Akal Takht Jathedar.

Dhami, in a statement, said that the history of Punjab is of protecting and respecting the daughters and sisters, “but it is not right for the present government to stop daughters like this while suspecting them”.

“Such acts do not suit the government which disrespects the beliefs of Punjab,” he said.

Dhami said that it is the right of every citizen to visit their family and go anywhere.

“Detaining someone without charge is a direct violation of human rights and the government should avoid such acts,” he said.

Singh married Kaur, a UK-based Non-Resident Indian, on February 10.

Kaur, who is a British citizen, reached the airport at around noon to board the flight to London but was stopped by the immigration staff and later, the Punjab Police was informed.

More than a month after a police crackdown against Amritpal Singh and his aides, the radical preacher continues to remain elusive even as a manhunt to nab him is underway.

Police launched the crackdown against Singh and members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’ on March 18.

He and his associates were booked under several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.

Singh got married to Kaur in a simple ceremony at Jallupur Khera, his native village in Amritsar.

The ‘Anand Karaj’ (marriage as per Sikh rituals) was held with a limited gathering of family members from both sides at a gurdwara in Baba Bakala in Amritsar.

Karnataka polls: NCP fields nine candidates, including ex-BJP MLC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday said it has fielded nine candidates in the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections, where the BJP, Congress and the JD(S) are locked in a triangular contest.

The NCP has fielded Uttam Patil from Nippani assembly segment in Belgavi district, a region with dominant Marathi-speaking population, where it had actively participated in the agitation against the desecration of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

It has fielded Masoor Saheb Bilagi from Devar Hippargi, Zameer Ahmad Inamdar (Baswan Bagewadi), Kulappa Chavan (Nagthan), R Hari (Yelburga), R Shankar (Ranebennur), K Suguna (Hagaribommanahalli), SYM Masood Foujdar (Virajpet) and Rehana Bano (Narsimharaja).

    MS Education Academy

Hari is the President of the NCP’s Karnataka unit and Shankar a BJP MLC who quit the party after being denied ticket to contest the May 10 elections.

Elected as the lone MLA of Karnataka Pragnyavantha Janatha Party (KPJP) from Ranebennur constituency in 2018, Shankar later joined the Congress.

However, he withdrew his support to Congress-JD(S) coalition government led by then Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, when a few MLAs from both parties resigned. He was then disqualified considering the fact that he was a Congress member. Shankar joined the BJP and was elected to the Legislative Council.

Shankar quit the BJP and as MLC after being denied the party ticket to contest the May 10 assembly elections.

NCP’s decision to field candidates in Karnataka is seen as an attempt to regain the national party status it had to forego due to its depleted political fortunes in states such as Goa, Meghalaya and Manipur.

The party’s entry into the electoral fray in Karnataka came at a time NCP supremo Sharad Pawar is leading efforts to forge opposition unity for the Lok Sabha elections next year.

The Congress is expecting a big victory in the Karnataka Assembly polls as it yearns for a reversal of its sliding electoral performance since the loss in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The NCP also announced its list of star campaigners Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel, Supriya Sule, P P Mohammad Faizal, Fouzia Khan, Clyde Crasto, among others.

  • Reliance reports highest ever quarterly net profit of Rs 19,299 cr

Reliance reports highest ever quarterly net profit of Rs 19,299 cr

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Reliance Industries Ltd on Friday reported its highest-ever quarterly net profit of Rs 19,299 crore in January-March on the back of stronger earnings from the oil and petrochemicals business and steady growth in retail and telecom operations.

The oil-to-retail-to-telecom conglomerate’s consolidated net profit of Rs 19,299 crore, or Rs 28.52 per share, in January-March compares to Rs 16,203 crore, or Rs 23.95 a share, earnings in the same period a year back, according to the company’s stock exchange filing and press statement.

A stronger margin from refining crude oil into products like petrol and diesel, resilient fuel exports earnings on lower windfall tax and chemical business witnessing a buoyancy from the use of ethane as feedstock drove oil-to-chemical (O2C) business.

    MS Education Academy

While higher subscriber additions and stable ARPU (average revenue per user) helped boost the telecom segment’s earnings, the retail segment was driven by an increased store footprint.

Analysts had forecast a decline in net profit as they saw continued weakness in petrochemicals margins. But using ethane imported from the US helped the company as its prices softened during the quarter.

The total income rose to Rs 2.19 lakh crore from Rs 2.14 lakh crore a year back.

Sequentially, the net profit was up 22 per cent from Rs 15,792 crore in October-December 2022.

For the full fiscal (April 2022 to March 2023), Reliance reported its highest-ever net profit of Rs 66,702 crore on a revenue touching close to Rs 10 lakh crore. The firm had a net profit of Rs 60,705 crore on a revenue of Rs 7.36 lakh crore in the preceding fiscal.

Operationally, all businesses were firing all cylinders. EBITDA at Rs 41,389 crore, was up 22 per cent year-on-year.

The mainstay oil refining and petrochemicals business, called O2C, posted a 14.4 per cent rise in EBITDA to Rs 16,293 crore. While digital services, which includes telecom, EBITDA at Rs 12,767 crore was 17 per cent higher, retail EBITDA was up 33 per cent at 4,769 crore. Oil and gas EBITDA more than doubled to Rs 3,801 crore – an 8-year high.

For telecom, EBITDA was driven by 29 million overall net customer additions. Blended ARPU, whereas, was almost flat at Rs 178.8.

In retail, it increased the number of stores to 18,040 from 17,225 in the preceding quarter. Store footfall soared 41.3 per cent to 219 million.

Reliance said the windfall profit tax on the export of diesel and ATF impacted the profit for the quarter at Rs 711 crore, down from Rs 1,898 crore in the preceding three months.

The government in July 2022 slapped a new tax on the export of petrol, diesel and jet fuel (ATF) as well as on domestically produced crude oil to scoop some of the gain being made by companies from higher global energy prices.

Telecom arm Jio reported a 15.6 per cent rise in net profit to Rs 4,984 crore on a higher customer base of 439.3 million.

Retail business net profit was up 13 per cent to Rs 2,415 crore on the addition of more stores, growth across consumption baskets and rising contribution from digital channels led to a rise in retail segment profits.

The company said its net debt after considering Rs 1,93,282 crore cash balance was lower than annualised EBITDA.

Commenting on the results, Mukesh D Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Ltd, said the firm’s initiatives in digital connectivity and organised retail are driving greater efficiencies in the economy and contributing to India’s emergence as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

“Jio continues to digitally empower millions of citizens across the nation, extending True 5G reach to 2,300+ cities and towns in a short span of 6 months,” he said. “Retail business registered excellent growth numbers backed by the expansion of physical and digital footprint and a significant increase in footfall.”

Also, the firm continues to expand its product base across consumption baskets, ensuring our customers get world-class products at affordable prices.

“O2C segment posted its highest-ever operating profit despite global uncertainties and disruptions in commodity trade flows. Our oil and gas segment also delivered very strong growth and is now poised to contribute nearly 30 per cent of India’s domestic gas production,” he said.

Ambani said Reliance has proposed to demerge its financial services arm and list the new entity ‘Jio Financial Services Ltd’. “This gives our shareholders an opportunity to participate in an exciting new growth platform from inception.”

Implementation of New Energy giga factories at Jamnagar is making significant progress, he noted.

Reliance’s annual EBITDA crossed the benchmark of Rs 1.5 lakh crore for the first time; the record-high EBITDA stood at Rs 154,691 crore, up 23.1 per cent year-on-year.

Capital expenditure for the year was Rs 1,41,809 crore. Net debt as of March 31, 2023, was Rs 1,10,218 crore, substantially below the annual EBITDA.

EBIDTA and net profit have doubled in last 5 years.

With incremental gas production from the MJ field, along with ongoing production from R Cluster and Satellite Cluster fields, Block KG-D6 production is expected to reach around 30 million standard cubic metres per day in FY24.
