    Muslims across India celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Muslims across India as well as different parts of the world on Saturday are celebrating the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr by offering namaz. The festival marks the end of the holy month of Ramzan.

In Delhi, people hugged each other after offering namaz at Delhi’s Jama Masjid on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr.

While talking to ANI, a man who came to offer namaz said, “I extend my wishes to the entire country on the occasion of Eid. This is a very important occasion after the 30 days of fasting. We are happy right now and special arrangements are made for the morning namaz. Delicious food items will be made in our houses today.”

    MS Education Academy

“Eid-Ul-Fitr sends the message of peace, brotherhood, humanity and love. I wish all evils are removed from the country and happiness spreads everywhere. I wish the nation keeps moving forward and keeps prospering,” he added.

“The nation comes first. We are known by our country. We are ‘Hindustani’ first,” he further added.

Another man, G R Siddique from Ghaziabad said, “Today is a very happy day. Namaz is being offered everywhere in India with love.”

“My only message is that Hindus and Muslims in the country maintain the spirit of brotherhood and spread this message all across the globe,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police were fully prepared to ensure the security of those offering namaz.

While talking to ANI, Special Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak said, “This is a time of joy and festivities. Delhi Police has professional excellence in crowd management, especially when it comes to festivals or celebrations. Strategic deployment, communication with people and community policing is done every year. Forces do come from outside, across Delhi.”

“Thousands of Police personnel deployed in the Central District – both in uniform and civil clothes. The local population also cooperates in creating an orderly atmosphere,” he added.

Muslims in Mumbai offered namaz on the occassion of Eid at Mahim Dargah.

Eid Ul-Fitr in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal was celebrated on a grand scale as people gathered at Eidgah in Bhopal to offer greetings.

Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The festival is of great significance due to the moon sighting which has been part of Islamic culture for a long time. It is believed that Prophet Muhammad used to wait for news of sightings of the crescent moon as it narrated the beginning of a new month.

Ending the holy month of Ramzan and starting a new spiritual journey also marks the beginning of a new Islamic year.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the month-long Ramzan fasting and the beginning of Shawwal which is the tenth month per the Islamic calendar. Since the observance of the moon is essential for ending Ramzan month and celebrating Eid, it is celebrated in different parts on different days usually with a one-day difference.

KCR directs release of budget for welfare schemes

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao seems to have planned a hat-trick with effective implementation of welfare schemes. In the last two years, due to the delay in the release of the budget, the welfare schemes have come to a standstill. The Chief Minister, while reviewing the reasons for the delay, has approved the release of the budget for welfare schemes through a green channel.

According to reliable sources, the Chief Minister said that the budget for welfare schemes of weaker sections, Dalits, women, farmers and minorities should be released through a green channel so that the support of these communities is available with the government.

If the sources to be believed, the office bearers submitted a detailed report to the Chief Minister regarding non-release of the budget, in which the slowdown of various schemes was apprised. The chief minister is said to have directed the Finance Department officials not to delay the release of funds for welfare schemes and to carry out the release through the green channel.

    MS Education Academy

The Chief Minister directed release of Rs 3,210 crore required for Kalyanlakshmi and Shadi Mubarak schemes. Thousands of applications for both schemes are said to be pending. The Chief Minister said that there is no shortage of funds, so steps should be taken to release the budget of welfare schemes through green channel system.

The schemes identified by the chief minister include Aasra Pension, Rythu Bima, Ritu Bandhu, free electricity supply to farmers, Arogyashree, KCR kits, Re 1 per kg rice, scholarship and Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Schemes.

The chief minister is confident that welfare schemes can make the BRS successful for the third time. The state’s economic situation has been weak for two years due to Covid-19. The chief minister asked the officials to take steps to fully spend at least the current year’s welfare budget.

  • Gyanvapi mosque case: SC records assurance for arrangements for wuzu on Eid

Gyanvapi mosque case: SC records assurance for arrangements for wuzu on Eid

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday recorded the assurance given by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that Varanasi district administration will provide sufficient water facilities to the devotees performing ‘wuzu’ (ablution) in Gyanvapi mosque.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha said: “We record the statement of the Solicitor General that in order to facilitate the performance of wuzu, the District Magistrate shall ensure that there are sufficient number of tubs and facilities of water made available in proximity so…..no inconvenience is caused to the devotees who come for performing namaz”.

During the hearing, Mehta submitted that toilets have been 70 metres away from the place, but they are asking for these facilities inside the premises of the mosque.

    MS Education Academy

Senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing on behalf of the Committee of Management of the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, submitted that the disputed area had been in use by Muslim worshippers for years for the purpose of wuzu. He stressed that this is the last Friday just before Eid.

The bench queried Mehta as why can there be no arrangements made for Friday and Saturday? Mehta responded that it is not possible because the entry to the bathroom is through the disputed area where the purported ‘Shiva Linga’ or according to them, a fountain is located and emphasised that the toilets are just 70 metres away.

Ahmadi questioned why should Muslim worshippers be forced to go outside the premises for the purposes of doing wuzu? Mehta replied that it is not wuzu, rather he was talking about the toilet facilities and assured that water will be provided to the Muslim worshippers for the performance of wuzu, and that there are six tubs.

The bench stressed that to facilitate the performance of ablution, long tubs should be provided. Mehta emphasised that authorities will provide sufficient water in order to ensure that everyone can perform wuzu.

In November last year, the apex court had extended the protection of the area inside Gyanvapi mosque where a “Shiv Linga” was found till further orders.

The top court had said the interim order, passed in May 2022, will remain in operation till further orders.

Committee of Management Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Varanasi, in its plea, contended the ablution area of the mosque where the “said object” has been found which, the petitioner maintains, is in fact a part of an old fountain. The plea further added that it was sealed by the district authorities and remains sealed till date, and the washroom alongside the same also remains sealed.

The plea contended that it has created inconvenience for the worshippers where they are deprived of the wuzukhana needed for offering namaz as well as the washroom. It pointed that the door to access the washroom was through the ablution area and the same remains sealed.

    BJP steps up Karnataka campaign

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Bharatiya Janata Party has stepped up its campaign for Karnataka assembly polls with party chief JP Nadda holding a roadshow and rally in Bidar and Union Home Minister Amit Shah holding a meeting with Karnataka BJP leaders.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was also present at Shah’s meeting with Karnataka BJP leaders. Amit Shah is on a three-day visit to Karnataka as part of BJP’s preparations for May 10 assembly polls.

Shah was supposed to hold a roadshow in Devanahalli but it was cancelled due to rain.

    MS Education Academy

“Due to heavy rain could not be there among the people of Devanahalli. I bow to them for turning out in large numbers despite adverse weather. I will certainly visit Devanahalli soon for a campaign. Their enthusiasm shows that the BJP will win a massive victory in Karnataka,” he said in a tweet.

Shah also shared a video of a local man who was seen wiping rainwater from cutouts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi put up on the way to a proposed BJP roadshow in Devanahalli.

“The unwavering trust in PM Narendra Modiji and the selfless affection for him is what the BJP has earned and it is its source of strength. Have a look at this beautiful video from Devanahalli, Karnataka,” Shah said in another tweet.

Amid the political battle in Karnataka, PM Modi held a telephone conversation with Karnataka BJP leader and former minister KS Eshwarappa.

“I didn’t expect his (PM) call, it inspires me to win Shivamogga city and we’ll try all possibilities to bring the BJP government back in Karnataka. It’s not something special I have done. I have told the same to PM,” he said.

Nadda, who is on a two-day visit to the state, held a roadshow in Bidar on Friday in support of party candidates.

He also addressed a public gathering. “BJP has always worked with a sense of commitment towards the betterment of society, whereas Congress has had a long history of interrupting social welfare schemes established by either the Centre or the previous BJP governments,” he said.

The battle in the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency is set to get more interesting with a ‘guru-shishya’ type flavour to the fight between two prominent Lingayat leaders.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Mahesh Tenginkai against former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, who was denied the ticket. Shettar has joined the Congress.

Tenjinakai had on April 18 sought blessings from Jagadish Shettar before filing his nomination for the seat.

“Jagadish Shettar has been my guru. This fight is between a guru and his shishya. I am confident that my guru will bless me,” Tenjinakai said.

Shettar, however, told ANI that he is neither Tenginkai’s guru nor is he “shishya”.

“His Guru is in Delhi and he is a loyal disciple of his guru in Delhi. BL Santhosh is his Guru. Because of his guru, he got the ticket.”

The former Karnataka chief minister accused Tenginkai of running a ‘whispering campaign’ against him over the past six to seven months.

“What is his contribution? Just being an office bearer is not enough. The people of Hubballi want involvement in their representative in the constituency. Just getting the ticket from BJP is not sufficient.”

Shettar joined the Congress after quitting the BJP for being denied a ticket for the May 10 assembly polls in the state.

Shetter said he left the BJP as his self-respect was hurt.

“Earlier whoever contested from this constituency (from BJP) everybody lost. I built the party here in this place. In 1994, I contested for the first time and also got elected. Subsequently, I have been re-elected from the seat. So it is pretty clear that the people have faith in me. I maintained the same relationship with the people of Hubballi,” Shettar said.

“My self-respect was damaged and because of this. I challenged them. After joining Congress, I went across areas in my constituency. People ushered warm welcome…My first meeting after joining Congress, it was all clear. Congress chief Khargeji and others assured me that I will always get respect from the congress party. I want no power. I only want respect. I am not an ambitious person. I am not a power-hungry man,” he added.

A day after the Karnataka High Court dismissed D K Shivakumar’s plea in a disproportionate assets case, the Congress leader said that he will fight till his last breath.

“I will approach the High Courts, I will fight till the last breath. I believe in a court of law. I still believe they have done an injustice. Everything is transparent,” said Shivakumar, who is Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President

“I believe in people’s court, they (BJP) are trying to use various agencies…I am very cautious on every move, I am also a political animal,” Shivakumar said.

The filing to dismiss the case does not describe the terms of the arrangement, simply calling it a settlement agreement. “[A]ll parties have agreed that the … appeals should be dismissed,” it says.

While Dye characterized the development as the district attorney’s office having withdrawn its appeal of the district court’s decision, a spokesperson for Bragg described it as a “successful” effort to wrest a concession from the committee: the presence of Bragg’s general counsel during the Pomerantz interview. Bragg’s office called it an “agreement that protects the District Attorney’s privileges and interests.”

House deposition rules typically prohibit government counsel from participating, but committees routinely sidestep those rules to reach agreements with otherwise reluctant current and former government officials. In recent years, lawmakers have permitted lawyers for various federal agencies to appear in order to assert any privileges.

The House Judiciary Committee issued the subpoena to Pomerantz in the wake of Bragg filing criminal charges against Trump late last month. Bragg then sued Jordan and the Judiciary panel, seeking a court order preventing the House from enforcing the subpoena.

The Judiciary committee claimed it wants to study the potential effects that the threat of a future prosecution could have on a president while he is in office. Bragg’s office argued, however, that the House had no legitimate legislative purpose in issuing the subpoena and instead intends to examine the district attorney’s internal deliberations regarding the Trump indictment.

A federal judge rejected Bragg’s position. “The subpoena was issued with a ‘valid legislative purpose’ in connection with the ‘broad’ and ‘indispensable’ congressional power to ‘conduct investigations,’” U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil wrote.

  • Opinion | The Supreme Court Stopped Short of a Radical Act

Opinion | The Supreme Court Stopped Short of a Radical Act

    [ad_1]

    supreme court abortion pill 62228

But what if the politics of judicial reform are already shifting under the justices’ feet?

The high-profile state Supreme Court race in Wisconsin — and the potential fallout — suggests that may be the case. During the midterms, that quintessential purple state delivered slim victories to a Democratic governor and a Republican senator. Less than five months later, though, a left-leaning candidate, Judge Janet Protasiewicz, ran up a double-digit advantage over her right-of-center opponent.

The Protasiewicz win fits awkwardly with a well-hallowed chestnut of political wisdom — that the politics of judicial power aren’t symmetrical across the party line. Simply put, Republican voters tend to have stronger feelings than Democrats about judicial appointments, and cast their votes in primaries to punish or reward candidates on that basis. In contrast, there’s some evidence that Democratic voters punish candidates who center campaigns on the courts. Republicans, indeed, have kept their eyes on the prize by prioritizing ideological consistency. Democrats such as President Joe Biden have instead aimed for representativeness across gender, ethnicity and professional grounds. The result is a less ideologically consistent and less coherent bench of Biden and Obama appointees.

In addition to his own centrist, institutionally minded temperament, it is likely this uneven pattern of voter attention to the courts that shaped the way in which the Biden White House has so far approached the politics of court reform. Rather than embracing calls on the left to expand the Supreme Court, the newly inaugurated president created a sprawling, bipartisan commission to study the question of reform. The body was largely staffed with legal academics of diverse views and partisan orientations. It was entirely predictable that such a group would not reach a consensus on reform. The commission was plainly designed to delay, and hence deflate, the push for structural change to the federal courts. And so it did — producing an extensive and academic report that elicited precisely nothing of political or practical significance.

But Wisconsin’s judicial election earlier this month suggests that the White House’s assessment of how judicial politics plays among Democratic voters no longer holds water. That election may signal a broader shift in the tectonics of voter mobilization in respect to courts and judges more generally.

The most obvious reason for thinking something has changed is that it was Democrats, and not Republicans, who were galvanized by the judicial election. These voters, moreover, were moved by the issue of judicial power but were not motivated as much by the goal of electing Democrats. In a state Senate race held that same day, the Republican candidate eked out a win. That too was a highly consequential election, giving Republicans a Senate supermajority and the votes to oust officials through impeachment.

Nor can it be said that the issue of abortion made all the difference: The question of reproductive choice plainly loomed large in November 2022. And yet GOP Sen. Ron Johnson, always a reliable voice for the anti-abortion position, retained his seat. Plainly, abortion politics explains in part why Protasiewicz won — but it can’t be the whole story.

In the wake of her election, we may also see more realignment in the politics of court reform. Until now, it has been Democrats on the left of their party who had pressed hardest for changing the courts through structural reform or other measures.

But in Wisconsin, Republicans were talking of impeaching Protasiewicz… before she had even won the election, let alone taken office. This is all the more remarkable because — unless she’s committed a crime — Protasiewicz can be impeached only for “conduct in office,” according to the state constitution, i.e. for things she presumably may do in the future.

Some state GOP lawmakers have since backed away from such talk, and in any event, the Democratic governor would be empowered to appoint a replacement. But the legislature could respond to rulings they dislike with the kinds of other tools that progressives have been advocating at the national level: measures such as jurisdiction-stripping and changes to the size of the court.

If the political script on judicial power gets flipped in Wisconsin — if GOP legislators act to rein in a liberal-leaning court — what could this bode for a broader change nationally? Or what happens if conservative federal judges or Supreme Court justices advance a far-right agenda reviled by progressives and even many centrists?

Surely, the next time Democrats have full control of Washington, the push to overhaul the judiciary will be a top priority, if they have the votes.

Even apart from its precedent-shattering opinions, some justices are doing little to build trust in the court. ProPublica’s revelations that Justice Clarence Thomas both received expensive gifts and engaged in six-figure real-estate transactions with a conservative billionaire will add fuel to the fire of public suspicion. Democratic calls for Thomas’ impeachment are, of course, unlikely to lead to any legislative action. But in striking contrast to the impeachment calls targeting Protasiewicz, they draw public attention to judicial behavior that plainly raises serious ethical questions, even if it doesn’t in the end cross a line into rank illegality.

All this means that the political dynamics of court reform are on the verge of a momentous shift: Democratic voters are likely to be more energized, and more likely to stomach what might have once seemed explosive measures. And for once, they may even be willing to reward candidates for public office who promise to follow through.
