Washington: The US government is drawing up plans for the eventual use of 6G networks, hoping to give Washington a technological edge in the future amid concerns over Beijing’s rapid advances in the telecommunications sector.
The White House met with corporate leaders, technology officials, and academic experts to develop strategies for upcoming 6G networks on Friday, senior US officials confirmed to multiple news outlets, RT reported.
The administration seeks to “take the lessons learned from 5G about the importance of early involvement and resilience” and use them to develop a 6G network which “optimizes performance, accessibility, and security”, one government staffer added.
While 6G technology is still in its infancy and is likely years away from use by the general public, it is expected to be significantly faster than the current 5G networks, and to dramatically expand high-speed internet access across the globe, RT reported.
In late 2020, China successfully launched an experimental satellite carrying candidates for possible 6G technology, hoping to verify the performance of the 6G frequency band in space.
Another administration official noted China’s technological gains in recent years, namely in the rollout of its own 5G network, saying Beijing had used the tech to advance national security goals and grow its global market share in the telecoms industry, RT reported.
Huawei is preparing for its own rollout of 6G technology, and says it hopes to launch the ultra-fast networks by 2030.
Amaravathi: Influenced by the weather system running from Vidarbha to south Tamil Nadu across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh will experience slightly lower temperatures in parts of the state, the Meteorological department said.
According to the Met department, lower tropospheric south and south-westerly winds are currently prevailing over the southern state and Yanam.
As a result, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has forecast heat waves for only three mandals in the state on Saturday, two in Anakapalli district and one in Kakinada.
Similarly, only 10 mandals logged heat waves on Friday out of a total of 670, APSDMA said in a statement on Friday.
Besides thunderstorms in parts of the state for four days from Friday to Monday, the Met department predicted such conditions on April 25 as well.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected in isolated parts over north coastal AP, Yanam, south coastal AP and Rayalaseema during these days.
It also forecast winds reaching up to speeds of 30 to 40 km per hour.
In the present crisis in Pakistan, a demand has been raised, mainly by the ruling PDM leaders and its members, that elections to the National and Provincial Assemblies be held together. The Pakistan Senate has also passed a resolution to this effect, and the real motive of all this is to avoid the Pakistan Supreme Court verdict that elections to the Punjab Assembly be held on 14th May.
Is this demand valid ? I submit it is not.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has said eletions will not be held on 14th May, jitni marzi zor laga len, and there should be simultaneous elections for the National and Provincial Assemblies.
The same view has been exprssed by former Attorney General Irfan Qadir
However, there is no provision in Pakistan’s Constitution that the National and Provincial Assembly elections must be held together.
Apart from that, there is another problem in holding both elections together.
Article 52 of Pakistan’s Constitution states :
” The National Assembly shall, unless sooner dissolved, continue for a term of five years from the day of its first meeting and shall stand dissolved at the expiration of its term ”.
Similarly Article 107 states :
” The Provincial Assembly shall, unless sooner dissolved, continue for a term of five years from the day of its first meeting and shall stand dissolved at the expiration of its term ”.Now suppose a Provincial Assembly, for some reason, is dissolved prematurely, say, one year after its first meeting, but the National Assembly is not dissolved, and has yet to complete another 4 years. Will there be no Provincial Assembly for 4 years ? Or should the National Assembly and other Provincial Assemblies be also dissolved ?
But Article 224(2) of Pakistan’s Constitution states :
” When the National Assembly or a Provincial Assembly is dissolved, a general election to the Assembly shall be held within a period of ninety days after the dissolution, and the results of the election shall be declared not later than fourteen days after the conclusion of the polls ”.
This provision is very clear, and it makes it obvious that both National and Provincial Assembly elections cannot be held together where either the National or the Provincial Assembly was dissolved prematurely.
The Punjab Provincial Assembly was dissolved prematurely on 14th January 2023, and hence in view of Article 224(2) elections to it had to be held by 14th April, and they could not be validly postponed to the time when the National Assembly completes its term in August, and elections are to be held for it in October.
I submit that for meeting the demand for holding elections simultaneously, the Constitution has to be amended, and until that is done, the demand is not tenable.
The truth is that this demand is a specious excuse and pretext by the PDM for opposing the Pakistan Supreme Court verdict of 4th April that elections to the Punjkab Assembly must be held on 14th May. The PDM knows it will be routed in the elections ( as all opinion polls indicate ), so it is determined that elections will not be held on 14th May, come what may ( jitni marzi zor laga len ). The demand for simultaneous elections is really a frivolous excuse for not accepting the Court verdict.
However, every day’s delay in holding the elections is another nail in the coffin of the PDM. The Pakistani people are not fools. They know that Imran Khan is basically honest, while the PDM are a gang of dacoits ( as the Panama Papers and other sources disclose ), and that is why PDM is opposing elections to avoid facing the wrath of the people and being routed at the polls.
However, elections cannot be avoided forever. The more they are delayed the more will public anger against the PDM rise, and therefore the closer is the latter to committing suicide
Bengaluru: The Congress on Saturday alleged Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s office is calling up the returning officers of various districts to find defects in the applications filed by its candidates and rectify the mistakes in those of BJP nominees contesting the May 10 Assembly election.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief D K Shivakumar demanded that the Election Commission should investigate the matter and summon the call details of the CMO to ascertain the truth.
“A major conspiracy is going on to reject the applications of the Congress candidates,” the party’s Karnataka unit chief said in a press conference.
He charged that some applications of the BJP candidates, for instance in Saundatti Yellamma constituency, are defective but the CMO “directly called the officer and directed him to make changes”.
“There is no need to elaborate how a big team is trying to reject (my) application. You all have been informed about it,” the Congress state chief said.
Shivakumar said he has filed the election form 10 times yet “when they can do this to me then imagine what they can do to the ordinary candidates”.
“Pressure is being built on all the returning officers. There is rampant misuse of power. The EC must take note of it. The CMO must be investigated,” the Kanakapura candidate demanded.
On Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje’s charge that the Congress was collecting ‘bribe’ from those candidates who have been given ticket to contest the Assembly election, Shivakumar retorted that his party was not collecting ’40 per cent commission’.
“We are only raising building fund for our party. We are collecting Rs 2 lakh from general candidates and Rs 1 lakh from SC/ST candidates,” Shivakumar explained.
The opposition Congress is locked in a tussle with the ruling BJP to wrest power in Karnataka with the JD(S) also an important player as polling is just weeks away.
Karnataka will vote in a single phase on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 1

Srinagar: Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated across Kashmir on Saturday with traditional fervour and gaiety as the largest congregation of devotees was witnessed at the Hazratbal shrine on the banks of the Dal lake.
However, authorities did not allow Eid prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in the old city, a day after allowing Friday congregational prayers.
Hopes of Eid prayers being offered at the 14th-century mosque in the city’s Nowhatta area were raised after authorities allowed the Shab-e-Qadr and Jumatul Vida prayers.
However, officials directed the Jamia Masjid management to conduct the Eid prayers at 7.30 am instead of 9 am.
The Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid said the prayers could not be held at 7.30 am as people had to come from far-flung areas in accordance with the schedule announced earlier.
The Eid celebrations went on smoothly elsewhere with men, women and children, dressed in their best, making a beeline to mosques, eidgahs and shrines to offer prayers.
The largest congregational prayers were held at the Hazratbal shrine where former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah was among the notable persons to offer prayers.
Large congregations for Eid prayers were also reported from other district headquarters and towns of the valley.

Hyderabad: The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in partnership with Re Sustainability Limited, on Friday hosted a seminar on ‘Invest in Our Planet’ to commemorate World Earth Day, which falls on 22nd April at the Engineering Staff College of India.
Experts and stakeholders from across the country discussed the pressing issue of hazardous waste management and shared their insights and experiences on the latest advancements in waste management practices, including hazardous waste management, resource recovery, circular economy initiatives, and more.
The event comprised three technical and information-intensive sessions on current practices in hazardous waste management, circular economy opportunities in hazardous waste management, and new developments in hazardous waste management- towards sustainable growth, said a press release.
One of the major needs identified was the facilitation of resource waste recovery and transformation of the market by promoting substantial utilization and supplementary use of fuels.
The challenges discussed during the seminar included funding deficiency, lack of focus on waste minimization, and the need for corrective actions to measure performance. The importance of waste minimization was emphasized, and industries were urged to start taking it seriously.
Another significant issue addressed was the prevention of groundwater contamination through sustainable treatment and aquifer remediation. The role of technology in remediation, such as soil retorting and mercury-contaminated site treatment, was also highlighted.
Proper enforcement of waste management regulations was stressed as a critical need to ensure effective and sustainable waste management practices.
Re Sustainability managing director Goutham Reddy said, “India recognized hazardous waste management early on, but progress was slow due to the lack of infrastructure and regulation. The definition of hazardous waste has always been a matter of debate worldwide, starting from the very definition of waste itself. We must work together to find innovative solutions that are sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.”
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday claimed some people are trying to divide the nation by pursuing politics of hate and said that she is ready to give her life but “will not allow a division of the country”.
Banerjee, speaking at a congregation for Eid namaz at the city’s Red Road, also urged people to unite and ensure that the right-wing BJP party is defeated in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
“Some people are trying to divide the country and practise politics of hate … I am ready to give my life but will not allow any division of the country,” she said, without naming anyone.
Accusing the saffron camp of trying to change the constitution of the country, Banerjee said “she will not allow implementation of NRC in West Bengal.” It has been the TMC’s stand that the National Register of Citizens and the citizen’s amendment act which confers citizenship rights on minorities from neighbouring countries was not needed and existing citixenship records and acts were sufficient.
“I am ready to fight the money power (of her political opponents), and (central) agencies (which her party alleges has been unleashed on TMC with a political motive), but I will not bow my head,” she said.
“In one year’s time, elections will be held to decide who will come to power in our country. Let us promise that we will unite and fight against divisive forces. We must ensure that all of us together vote them out in the next polls. If we fail to protect democracy, then everything will be finished.”
