PSLV C55 carrying two Singapore satellites blasts off from Sriharikota

    [ad_1]

Sriharikota: ISRO’s PSLV C55 rocket carrying two Singapore satellites lifted off the spaceport on Saturday.

In its dedicated commercial mission through NSIL, ISRO’s workhorse launch vehicle carried with it TeLEOS-2 as the primary satellite and Lumelite-4 as a co-passenger satellite that would be deployed into low earth orbit.

The 44.4-metre tall rocket blasted off from the first launch pad at the end of a 22.5-hour countdown at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, located about 135 km from Chennai.

    MS Education Academy

TeLEOS-2 is a synthetic aperture radar satellite developed under a partnership between the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), representing the Government of Singapore and ST Engineering.

After deployment of the satellite into the about 586 km orbit, it would be used to support the satellite imagery requirements of various agencies within the Government of Singapore. TeLEOS-2 carries a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload. It would be used to provide all-weather day and night coverage and is capable of imaging at 1-metre full polarimetric resolution for Singapore.

Lumelite-4 satellite is co-developed by the Institute for Infocomm Research and Satellite Technology and Research Centre of the National University of Singapore.

It is an advanced 12U satellite developed for the technology demonstration of the High-Performance Space-borne VHF Data Exchange System (VDES). The satellite’s objective is to augment Singapore’s e-navigation maritime safety and benefit the global shipping community, ISRO said.

Sufi body calls Poonch attack ‘conspiracy to defame India’ ahead of G20 meet

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council chairman Hazrat Syed Naseeruddin Chishti on Saturday condemned the Poonch terrorist attack and said the entire country is with the armed forces.

Such attacks are part of a “conspiracy to defame India” because a G20 meeting is scheduled to take place in Kashmir, he said.

Five Army personnel were killed and another was seriously injured on Thursday after their vehicle was attacked by unidentified terrorists and caught fire in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch. The soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

    MS Education Academy

Banned outfit People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), a proxy wing of terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed, has claimed responsibility for the attack. There are reports suggesting that it was the handiwork of banned Lashker-e-Taiba group also.

“Till date, all our brave soldiers have sacrificed their lives for the protection of Kashmir and peace in Kashmir. We will not let their martyrdom go in vain, the whole country is standing with the armed forces,” Chishti said in a statement.

Today, Kashmir has started on the path of peace and development. The Muslims there are also extending their full cooperation in establishing peace, he said.

Such nefarious terrorist attacks are part of a “conspiracy to defame India” because a G20 programme is scheduled to be held in Kashmir, he added.

India is expected to host over 200 G20 meetings during its yearlong presidency of the influential group. It will host a meeting of the G20 Tourism Working Group in Srinagar in May.

Chishti also greeted people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

  • 2020 Delhi riots: Court directs DCP to take action on incriminating, unverified video

2020 Delhi riots: Court directs DCP to take action on incriminating, unverified video

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A Delhi court has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) concerned to take immediate remedial action regarding an unverified, incriminating video against an accused in connection with the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat was hearing the case fixed for orders on the point of charge against four defendants — Rahul Kumar, Suraj, Yogender Singh, and Naresh –, who have been accused of participating in a riotous mob that committed arson in a place of worship and some of its ground-floor shops on fire on February 25, 2020.

The judge noted that while Suraj and Yogender were the subjects of CCTV film, Kumar had been recognised by a public witness. Additionally, there was a video against Naresh, who is accused of committing arson and raising a flag over a house of worship.

    MS Education Academy

“However, when the video was sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), the report was received stating that the DVD was found inaccessible in the video analyst’s system and hence, no examination was carried out. The FSL report was filed by way of a supplementary chargesheet,” the judge said.

No other witness was found to identify accused Naresh, according to the judge, and it was “inexplicable” how the incriminating footage was discovered to be inaccessible after being given to the CFSL.

“If it was so, the investigating officer (IO) or the station house officer (SHO) or the assistant commissioner of police (ACP) should have again sent the correct and accessible video to the FSL for their opinion and filed the same but instead, the IO has filed the supplementary chargesheet, along with the FSL report of the inaccessible video,” the judge said.

He stated it is “difficult” for the court to frame charges against Naresh based on a “unverified DVD” because the court must do it based on the evidence that is presented.

“But yet at the same time, if the video exists and it is verified by the FSL, it can inculpate the accused and thus, discharging him at this stage without the FSL report will hurt the conscience of this court, particularly, given the nature of the case of burning of a religious place. Moreover, the origin of the video is not disclosed,” the judge said.

“In these circumstances, this court is of the opinion that the DCP concerned should take immediate remedial action,” he added.

The court then listed the matter for June 7 for next hearing.

  • ‘Still amazes me that he never batted..’: Harbhajan on Sachin

‘Still amazes me that he never batted..’: Harbhajan on Sachin

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: There are no perfect cricketers, but if there is someone closest to perfection, the only name that Harbhajan Singh can ever think of is Sachin Tendulkar.

One of India’s greatest spinners, Harbhajan has been a close friend of the maestro for more than 20 years and his “memory bank” is full of Tendulkar stories, both on and off the field.

“Paaji (as Tendulkar is referred to by junior teammates) is perhaps someone who is closest to being a perfect cricketer. Obviously, as a person he is a role model and an example of how to lead your life with dignity, humility, despite enjoying god-like status and insane following in our country,” Harbhajan told PTI during an interaction ahead of Tendulkar’s 50th birthday.

    MS Education Academy

    Memories with Tendulkar

Asked to share his memories, Harbhajan laughed.

“There are way too many. He has a guiding light in my life. Some are too personal and emotional, which I will keep for my story. But I can share a few with you guys,” the ‘Turbanator’ said.

“To understand the genius of Sachin Tendulkar, one little story will be enough. During the entire 2003 World Cup in South Africa, Paaji didn’t bat in the nets for even one single day.

“The Indian bowling unit performed well but neither Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan nor Anil Kumble or myself bowled even once to him at nets during the tournament,” Harbhajan recollected.

Tendulkar finished the tournament with more than 600 runs, including the epic 98 against Pakistan at the Centurion, the slash over third man off a short ball by Shoaib Akhtar still fresh in memory.

So how did he get match ready during that World Cup?

“In 2003, we didn’t have those throw-down apparatus (Robo-Arm), like we have today. But we had a gentleman named Shyamal, who would give Paaji throw-downs from 18 yards, and at times, 16 yards. He would take throw-downs for hours and that was his practice.

“He was very big on preparation and visualization of bowlers he would face. In those pre-analyticy days (there used to be video analyst though), in his head, he knew how to tackle each bowler,” Harbhajan said.

The reason he took throw-downs, at times from 16 to 18 yards, was to ensure that during the match the same delivery would come to him a split second late and give him that extra time to manoeuvre.

“He had all shots in the book. During my peak, no one played my doosra in the Indian nets as comfortably as Sachin did. Man, he could read the hand of the bowlers and in a flash would adjust his footwork.

“Yes, I have dismissed him a number of times in the nets but he has also hammered me. No one played the conventional sweep like he did. He knew when to play the sweep shot up in the air or when to just play the paddle and keep the ball along the ground.”

The T20 cricket has witnessed innovative shot-making being taken to a different level but Harbhajan felt that Tendulkar’s basic game was so strong that he didn’t need to play fancy strokes.

“No one played more strokes in the ‘V’”

“I don’t think in last 25 years among Indian batters, there has been anyone who has played more strokes in ‘V’ than Sachin. He could just play within the ‘V’ and if you can score in-front of the wicket, you don’t need too many innovations.”

Harbhajan is proud that he has been a part of an Indian dressing room and has watched Tendulkar hit at least 60-65 of his 100 international hundreds.

“I have been at the other end during some of those knocks. But nothing beats the feeling of watching those twin hundreds at Sharjah as an 18-year-old. Watching him scythe through Aussie attack was such a great feeling. I didn’t play the finals, but I was a part of the XI, when he scored the other hundred,” Harbhajan recalled.

“Yes, he has 49 ODI hundreds but those two knocks in Sharjah and the 98 against Pakistan at Centurion are three knocks that I will remember till my last day. In 1998, 275 was like 350 and in a World Cup game in 2003, 270 plus was a par score. Chasing in high-stakes game requires a different mindset.”

He then narrated a funny story when he was first selected in the Indian team and got a chance to bowl to Tendulkar in the nets.

“I had bowled to Sachin as an academy bowler when Indian team played its matches in Mohali, but once I was selected in the Indian team, it was a different atmosphere.”

“So it happened that I got a chance to bowl to Sachin. Now, after a few deliveries, I felt that he summoned me by nodding his head upside down. So I just went up and asked him ‘Haanji Paaji? Aapne bulaya’? (Did you call me Paaji?). Now Sachin, when he is batting he doesn’t talk to anyone. He is just in his zone and told me ‘No’.”

“After a few minutes, again a nod of his head and I again went up and this time he seemed a bit irritated as it was hampering his practice. He asked, ‘What happened, why are you coming up time and again’? I could gather enough courage to tell him that since he was nodding his head after each delivery, I felt he wanted to speak to me.”

    Behind Sachin’s ‘nodding’

Then he laughed and told me the actual reason behind his nodding.

“In those days, he used to wear a helmet that was slightly over-sized or loose, I may say. So, after every delivery, he would just nod his head upside down to adjust the helmet before facing the next delivery.”

Tendulkar was like a pillar of strength for Harbhajan during his lowest phase — the ‘Monkey Gate’ scandal — where he was accused of racially abusing the late Andrew Symonds.

Since the incident happened during a partnership between Harbhajan and Tendulkar, the legend was also summoned for a hearing, where he stood firmly by his younger teammate, who was later absolved of any wrongdoing.

Asked if he had any message for his “paaji” on his 50th birthday, Harbhajan said, “Just pray for a long, healthy life and keep inspiring us like you have always done.”

  • Chinese firm Xiaomi’s plea challenging ED rejected by Karnataka HC

Chinese firm Xiaomi’s plea challenging ED rejected by Karnataka HC

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka High Court has rejected Chinese firm Xiaomi’s plea against the seizure of Rs 5,551.27 crore from its bank accounts by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

A single-judge bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna, on Friday, though dismissed the petition, upheld its maintainability.

The Chinese technology company is facing charges of violations of the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

    MS Education Academy

The bench observed that challenge to the Constitutional validity of Section 37A of the Act by the petitioner is held to be maintainable, on the fulcrum of the allegation that it is violative of Article 14 of the Constitution. As Article 14 is person centric whereas Fundamental Rights under Article 19 are citizen centric.

Appearing for the central government and the ED, Additional Solicitor General M.B. Nargund Amaintained that Xiaomi is a foreign entity and can not maintain writ petition.

Earlier, counsels for Xiaomi India had argued that the firm was being targetted as it is a Chinese company and other companies are allowed to make payments of technology royalty.

They have also brought to the notice of the court that banks are not allowing Xiaomi to make remittances in foreign exchange for imports.

They argued that the company is required to make payments for foreign companies in connection with manufacturing and marketing smartphones.

Contesting this Additional Solicitor General Nargund had explained that the authorities had no complaints if Xiaomi is agreeable to keep the seized amount in the bank and use remaining amount.

He brought to the notice of the court that on April 24 and 29, before the ED passed the order to seize Xiaomi’s bank accounts, there was a transfer of around Rs 1,500 crore from the company’s bank accounts as per the available information.

However, Xiomi is maintaining that royalty payments made to three companies abroad would not violate the FEMA Act. The company further maintained that the IT department itself had allowed it as a value added activity.

Congress expels woman who levelled harassment charges against Assam leader

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta was suspended from the primary membership of the Congress for six years on Saturday for anti-party activities.

Dutta had accused Indian Youth Congress chief Srinivas B V of causing mental agony to her after she levelled sexual harassment charges against former IYC president Keshav Kumar.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed the Congress over the move, saying this is its model of women empowerment and its slogan of “ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon” (I am a woman and I can fight) is hollow.

    MS Education Academy

“Congress president has expelled Dr Angkita Dutta, president, Assam Pradesh Youth Congress, from the primary membership of the party, for six years for her anti-party activities with immediate effect,” Tariq Anwar, member-secretary of the Disciplinary Action Committee of the Congress, said in an order.

Hitting out at the Congress, BJP’s IT cell head Amit Malviya tweeted: “This is Congress’s model of women empowerment!”

“Sack the woman who alleged harassment instead of providing a platform to hear her grievances. The manner in which Angkita Dutta has been removed from the Congress is uninspiring for women,” he said.

Malviya also said, “Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon is a hollow slogan.”

The Congress had come up with the slogan in the run-up to last year’s Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

Dutta had tweeted: “When previous IYC president Keshav Kumar had sexually harassed and because of #MeToo came out. He was compelled to remove. Now despite being mentally harassed and discriminated by B V Srinivas for 6 months. I have been told to keep mum and no enquiry is initiated.”

“Honestly I am aware this could lead to an end of my political career. If this is the price I have to pay, so be it. About me meeting some BJP leader, one is welcome to check CCTV footage of home and office where you will probably see me reading trolls my colleagues are spreading,” she tweeted on Friday.

Dutta was issued a show-cause notice by the Assam Congress, asking her to explain why action should not be taken against her for her alleged antiparty activities.

  • Karnataka’s 4% Muslim quota: ‘Ended special favour..’, says Amit Shah

Karnataka’s 4% Muslim quota: ‘Ended special favour..’, says Amit Shah

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday alleged that Congress provided 4 per cent reservation to Muslims in Karnataka in an “unconstitutional manner” and that Bharatiya Janata Party government in the State had put an end to the practice.

Speaking at a media conclave organised by India Today, Shah said that the BJP ended the “special favour” meant for “scoring political points” and gave the rights to persons deserving the reservation, the OBCs.

The Home Minister said that the Constitution does not allow reservation on the basis of religion and slammed the Congress party for doing so.

    MS Education Academy

Speaking at the conclave, Shah said, “As far as justice is concerned with the social point of view, the Congress government had given 4 per cent Muslim reservation in an unconstitutional manner in Karnataka. It was unconstitutional because our Constitution does not approve reservation based on religion but it was prevailing in Karnataka.”

“The state government scrapped the 4 per cent reservations for Muslims and increased the reservation for SC, ST, Vokkaliga and Lingayat. We have ended the special favour meant for scoring political points. We brought the Constitution to order and gave the rights to those deserving,” Shah said.

Earlier this March, the Karnataka government decided to scrap the four per cent quota for minorities and add it to the existing quota of two dominant communities of the poll-bound state.

The 4 per cent reservation given to Muslims under the 2B classification of the OBC category will now be divided into two equal parts and added to the existing quota of Vokkaligas and Lingayats for whom two new reservation categories of 2C and 2D were created during the Belagavi Assembly Session last year.

The state government’s move was slammed by the opposition and Congress vowed to cancel the move if it comes to power in the upcoming Assembly elections slated on May 10.

“As soon as our government comes, we will cancel the reservation issue and will protect the minority interest,” state Congress president DK Shivakumar had said.

On April 14, former Karnataka Chief Minister Veerappa Moily who introduced the 4 per cent reservation said that it given to the Muslims in his regime was on a scientific basis and it was not on the basis of religion.

While speaking to ANI, Veerappa Moily said, “This reservation was given by me when I was CM in 1993 and it was done on basis of scientific data and not on the basis of religion. Muslims as a class were included in the backward category and it was absolutely legal. When we took the decision data was there. BJP has scrapped this reservation without any report”.

Veerappa Moily further stated that Congress will restore the 4 per cent reservation quota after coming back to power in Karnataka.
“We will restore it once we come back to power. This decision was unjustified and unscientific,” he said.
