Malaysians mark Eid-ul-Fitr as economy recovers

    [ad_1]

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Muslims marked the Eid-ul-Fitr festival on Saturday as the country sees economic recovery, instilling a more positive vibe in the country following years of disruptions and uncertainty.

With a renewed interest in international travel and trade, Malaysians looked forward to the festival, which typically begins with a trip back to hometowns and a reunion with family members, reports Xinhua news agency.

For sales executive Nadirah Naim, this year will be a more joyous celebration as the economy has jump-started and all forms of pandemic restrictions have been withdrawn, encouraging her family and relatives to meet up without hesitation.

“Last year was not easy. (COVID-19) cases were still high. My company was not certain about its future and there was talk of reducing the number of staff. It was still a gloomy time,” she told Xinhua.

“But this year there is a feeling of being set free. My job is stable, and I do not have the same anxiety that I faced previously. My family will be meeting up in our hometown in Negeri Sembilan (state). I am looking forward to seeing them, especially those who I have not seen in years,” she added.

Meanwhile, Khairudin Nizam, who operates a consultancy in Kuala Lumpur also chimed in, explaining that he felt he had more to spend this year and would do so to make up for previous years, when he could not celebrate as freely.

“Our family’s hometown is right in this state, but we have not met each other often, even during the Eid-ul-Fitr season of last year. There was still uncertainty, whether from the pandemic or the poor economy. But things have turned around. This year will be the first real celebration in the recent years,” he said.

The movement of people to their hometowns is especially felt in the capital Kuala Lumpur, with the usually busy roads being relatively free, with more tourists than locals walking around in parts of the city.

This contrasts with heavy traffic along the country’s main interstate highways, with the Malaysian Highway Authority expecting an increased volume of 2.3 million cars daily over the festival period.

The country’s king Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah urged Malaysians to be grateful for the peaceful coexistence of the various ethnic and religious groups in the country, who are free to conduct worship and celebrate their respective festivals with joy and excitement.

“Transcending borders and differences, Malaysians celebrate holy festivals of various religions in harmony and by visiting each other. Malaysians can also continue their daily lives with a sense of tolerance and without any gaps between races and religions,” he said in a televised speech.

For his part, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called on Malaysians to strengthen unity by visiting each other during the festival period, in a separate address.

He also spoke on the importance of promoting mercy and compassion in Malaysia’s pursuit of development and progress.

“I would also like to stress that the spirit of unity and sacrifice be fostered and the attitude of kindness and mercy be extended to the weak and destitute and those who are marginalised,” he said.

Malaysia is one of the most multicultural nations in Southeast Asia, with a population of about 33 million.

‘Indian Muslims won’t be scared..’: AIMIM MLA on Atiq’s killing

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM MLA from Maharashtra’s Malegaon, Mufti Mohammad Ismail A Khalique on Saturday remarked that only ‘madmen’ assume that the Muslims of India will be scared by killing a couple of individuals.

Talking to the media he said that the present-day situations in Uttar Pradesh (UP) are well known to everyone and there is no need to define them referring to the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed in Prayagraj.

Mufti said that people are taking the law into their hands. “We are not advocating for any criminal, but punish them within the purview of the law,” he said.

He said that taking decisions that sideline the law could be said that it’s a ‘dictatorship’. He said that the UP government is trying to walk the same path as Hitler.

“This is not right for you and the country. If you think that by killing 2-4 people, you will scare all the Muslims of India, this is the dream of a madman. It will never happen.”

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on April 16 said it was necessary to prevent radicalization, adding that he was not afraid to visit Uttar Pradesh.

“I am ready to die… Radicalization needs to be stopped. I will surely visit Uttar Pradesh, I am not scared. Jab pyaar kiya toh darna kya (why fear death when you are loved),” he added.

Karnataka: Shivakumar-Siddaramaiah bonhomie on display at event

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar and Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, who are vying for the post of chief minister if Congress voted to power, have passed on a message of unity to party workers.

In a rare gesture at a private function, both leaders showed affection to each other and posed for photographs on Saturday.

The leaders posed for photos by putting their arms around each other. The general perception is that they are not on good terms.

    MS Education Academy

Hitting out at Congress, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stated on Saturday, “Shivakumar does not know how they have finished off Siddaramaiah. In the previous election, they finished him politically in the Chamundeshwari constituency and this time it will happen in the Varuna constituency. The people are aware of it.”

Recently, a video showing Siddaramaiah giving a rude reply to Shivakumar at the party headquarters appeared on social media and showed everything was not alright between the two. The gesture of the two leaders is intended to pass on a message of goodwill and harmony between the two leaders.

Rahul Gandhi during his recent visit to Karnataka had stressed that what makes him happy was the unity shown by the party leaders in Karnataka.

However, sources state that knives are out to finish off each other and eliminate the competition for the post of chief minister, if Congress is voted to power.

Top US official Donald Lu praises India’s press freedom

    [ad_1]

A top US official has praised India’s press freedom and the importance of journalists in promoting democracy in the world’s most populous country.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu stated that “there is nothing that’s kept secret there. You have India as a democracy in part because you have a free press that really works.”

“I know the media market is changing. But I have such respect for the freedom of the press in India. There is nothing that’s kept secret there. You have India as a democracy in part because you have a free press that really works,” Lu told PTI in Washington.

“I can remember going into MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) once and seeing a senior person with files stacked up to the ceiling because he was processing a Right For Information request. And he was complaining bitterly about having to do this and I could only laugh because we have to do the same thing in our bureaucracy where if someone asks for a document, I have to spend several days finding the document for them because that’s what democracy does,” he said.

JD(U) backs Satyapal Malik after CBI serves him notice in insurance case

    [ad_1]

Patna: After CBI served a notice to former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik in the Reliance insurance scam case, JD(U) president Lalan Singh on Saturday came out in his support and called the Centre a “coward”.

Those questioning the Centre are being targetted, he added.

In a Twitter post, Singh said: “Malik Saheb is fighting but the ‘cowards’ are using government power to target their opponents. They do not know that the people of the country are watching them. There was an apprehension of action being taken against you on a day when you have disclosed the fact (Related to the Pulwama incident).”

    MS Education Academy

“Sarfaroshi ki tamannah ab hamare dil me hai, dekhna hai zor kitna baju-e-katil meine hai,” he said.

Targetting the Centre, the Congress has also uploaded a tweet. It said, “Finally, PM Modi was not able to restrain. Satyapal Malik exposed him in front of entire countrymen, so CBI called him. It was expected.”

Earlier, the former governor claimed that the CBI had asked him to appear before it at his convenience on April 27 or 28. The CBI wants some clarification on the corruption cases.

Malik served as governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 23, 2018, to October 30, 2019.

  • Current COVID strain mild, SII producing 5-6million Covovax doses: Adar Poonawalla

Current COVID strain mild, SII producing 5-6million Covovax doses: Adar Poonawalla

    [ad_1]

Pune: The prevalent strain of COVID-19 is mild and the Serum Institute of India (SII) has already produced five to six million doses of the Covovax vaccine, said the company’s chief executive officer Adar Poonawalla on Saturday.

Poonawalla was talking to media persons amid rising cases of coronavirus infections in the country since March.

India has recorded 12,193 fresh COVID-19 cases in a span of 24 hours, with the number of active cases of the infection going up to 67,556, the Union health ministry said on Saturday.

    MS Education Academy

“Currently, the COVID strain is not severe, it’s just a mild strain. Just for precautionary measures, elderly people can get the booster dose, but it would be their choice whether or not to take it. Five to six million doses of Covovax are available. We will also produce the same amount of Covishield doses in the next two to three months,” said Poonawalla.

As per a health bulletin of the Maharashtra government on Friday, the XBB.1.16 variant of Omicron is currently the dominant strain in the state.

The Centre on Friday asked eight states, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, to maintain a strict watch and take preemptive action in any area of concern to control any emerging spread of infection.

“We are providing Covovax in the US and Europe. It is the only COVID vaccine made in India which is approved in the US and Europe. Currently, the demand is very small,” Poonawalla added.
