Collegium issue is all about mindgame: Law Minister Rijiju

Itanagar: Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday described the collegium issue as a “mindgame”, saying he will not talk about it.

He made the remarks here when asked about the various recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium pending before the government, including those related to the appointment of high court chief justices.

“The Collegium issue is all about mindgame. I am not going to talk about it,” he said.

Rijiju was speaking on the sidelines of an event to dedicate 254 mobile towers for 4G services to Arunachal Pradesh. He said the lack of infrastructure facilities in border areas which have tough terrain was a major issue for the locals. Kiren Rijiju and Tapir Gao represent Arunachal Pradesh in Lok Sabha.

Rijiju has been quite vocal against the Collegium system and once even called it “alien to our Constitution”.

  • Rahul represents ‘laziest type of politics’, alleges BJP minister

Rahul represents ‘laziest type of politics’, alleges BJP minister

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi represents the “laziest type of politics” of making bizarre allegations and promises without any intention to improve people’s lives, Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Saturday, days after the Congress leader created a ripple by pitching for caste census and pledged a slew of sops in Karnataka.

He also expressed confidence that the rebellion of some key BJP leaders in Karnataka will not come in the way of the incumbent party winning its first-ever majority in the coming assembly polls.

He said state BJP leaders have accepted the generational change after the “brave” decision of fielding 74 first-time candidates in the May 10 elections.

    MS Education Academy

The BJP has come to be identified with the state’s future, while the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) symbolise the “lazy, entitled and exploitative” politics of the past, Chandrasekhar, a Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka, told PTI in an interview.

With Rahul Gandhi making a slew of promises, including allowances for the unemployed and women, and backing demand for caste census, a bid to woo politically important Other Backward Classes (OBC), at a poll rally in Karnataka, Chandrasekhar took a swipe at him questioning the party’s track record when it was in power for decades.

Gandhi wants people to forget that his party has ruled for decades, he said.

“It is the laziest type of politics that Rahul Gandhi represents,” the BJP leader said, adding his politics is all about saying something bizarre, and making a few allegations and promises and then going away without having any intention to work hard to improve the lives of people.

“They did nothing for the OBC is when they were in government. Look at all of the work done for the community under the prime minister and the double-engine government in Karnataka. To make promises and disappear is the Congress style,” the minister said.

“They have gone and made promises in Punjab, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh that they never fulfilled,” he claimed.

The BJP leader said that the defection of Lingayat leaders like former chief minister Jagadish Shettar and former deputy chief minister Laxman Savadi will fail to dent the community’s support to the party, as he noted the BJP’s historical “commitment, recognition and respect” to the leaders from the group.

“One or two leaders, who wanted to put their personal ambition ahead of everybody else and everything else, have gone to the Congress or to the JD(S). If you look at Shettar or Savadi, both leaders enjoyed a long stint with the BJP and always subscribed to its ideology.

“We will find that on May 13 they will not only lose (the election), but whatever respect they have earned over the last several decades as BJP members, they will have lost that as well,” he said.

Asked about the Congress accusing the BJP of insulting Lingayat leaders, he said the opposition party has a history of creating divisions in the state’s largest community, believed to be around 17 per cent of the total population.

In the 2018 polls, the then chief minister Siddaramaiah created “propaganda” about Lingayats not being Hindus, he said.

“This is the standing strategy of the Congress to try and divide those people who support our good governance. They’ve done this before as well. And like they have failed in 2018. They will fail this time as well,” he said.

There’s support for the BJP among various communities, be it Lingayats, Vokkaligas or Dalits, because of the “work of its government in the state and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government at the Centre, and this is based on their deep belief in our governance”, he said.

Some tweets by Siddaramaiah or some other Congress leader will not affect one or another community’s support for the BJP, he said.

“It is not affected if you take away one or two leaders through inducement or whatever. The basic support of the community doesn’t change because of that,” he said.

The Congress is fighting an existential crisis and is desperate as it knows that a loss in Karnataka will mean that the party will vanish from the state as it has from the rest of south India except Kerala where it has already lost back-to-back elections, he said.

The BJP, the Union minister said, is very clearly positioned to campaign on a pro-incumbency plank about the last three and a half years of its efforts during the “most difficult” time in Karnataka history as it was hit by floods and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the hung verdict delivered by the 2018 polls, the Congress and the JD(S) joined hands to come to power before the BJP, the single largest party, toppled the government and took the reins of power in 2029 after 17 alliance MLAs quit the assembly and joined the saffron party.

Now the state’s economy is not only back on track but it is one of the fastest growing and performing economies, with the government under Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai delivering on Modi’s plank of “maximum governance”, he said, citing a slew of schemes for the welfare of various segments of society.

The BJP leadership’s decision to field 74 new faces among the total 224 candidates is important and brave as it believes that it is the party for the future of Karnataka, he said. PTI KR.

  • Confident of winning more than halfway mark in Karnataka polls: Shah

Confident of winning more than halfway mark in Karnataka polls: Shah

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Home Minister Amit Shah expressed confidence on Saturday that the BJP will win 15-20 seats more than the halfway mark in Karnataka assembly polls and asserted that its support base remains intact despite defection by some party leaders, noting that historically its rebels have not won and “this will prove true this time also”.

With the Congress targeting the central government over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha following his conviction in a defamation case, Shah told India Today in an interview that “no family is above the law in India and the law is above all”.

Gandhi vacated his government bungalow on Saturday after he was served a notice for eviction and claimed that he is paying the price for speaking the truth.

    MS Education Academy

Replying to a question on Gandhi playing “victim”, he said, “We never asked Rahul Gandhi to disrespect the OBC community. He himself decided not to apologise.

“The law under which he was convicted was made by the Congress government. Then prime minister Manmohan Singh tried to withdraw that law but Rahul Gandhi himself tore down the ordinance. Now he should not play the victim. No one should think that any family is above the law.” The ordinance, if passed by Parliament, would have spared any convicted MP from immediate disqualification.

To a question about the allegation that the CBI summoning former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik is linked to his recent criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, the home minister said such a charge is not true as he was called by the probe agency earlier too.

“I can say with complete conviction that the BJP has done nothing that needs to be covered up. If someone is levelling allegations after parting ways with us, then it should be evaluated accordingly by the media and people,” he said.

On Karnataka assembly polls scheduled for May 10, he said the BJP will get 15-20 seats more than the halfway mark of 112 seats in the 224-member legislature.

They are not substantiated by any court and have been fabricated by the Congress to cover up corruption during its own regime, Shah claimed, accusing the opposition party of using Karnataka as its “ATM” when it was in power.

The Congress has no answers to its apathy towards Karnataka during its regime, he said, adding that when the Congress-led UPA was in power during 2009-14, the Centre released Rs 94,224 crores to the state.

Prime Minister Modi increased the amount to over Rs 2.26 lakh crore during 2014-19. The tax devolution and grant-in aid was Rs 22,000 crore but has been increased to Rs 75,000 crore, he added.

Attacking Congress, he said its government violated the Constitution by providing four per cent reservation for Muslims in the state.

The Constitution does not allow any kind of reservation on the basis of religious identity, he noted.

The BJP government has scrapped this reservation and increased the quota for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Vokkaligas and Lingayats, he said.

While the Congress “protected and nurtured” the PFI, a radical Islamic organisation now banned by the Modi government, he said its cadres used to commit murders in broad daylight in the state.

PM Modi banned it and provided security to the people of the state, he said.

On the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, “We will give a befitting reply to any attack on India.” He added that violence against the foreign embassies of India will not be taken lightly by the Modi government.

On the “personal attacks” launched on Modi, he said, “Personal attacks on Modi ji are not new and began long back by Sonia Gandhi who had called him ‘Maut Ka Saudagar’. But whenever he faced such attacks he emerged stronger”.

  • WB: 1.5K camera traps to be installed to track tiger movement

WB: 1.5K camera traps to be installed to track tiger movement

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: In an attempt to track the movement of Royal Bengal tigers reportedly frequenting the forest zones in north Bengal, the state forest department has decided to install 1,500 camera traps in three reserve forest zones in the region.

The three reserve forest zones are Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary in Darjeeling district, Neora Valley National Park in Kalimpong district and Buxa Tiger Reserve in Alipurduar district.

“The installation of camera traps will also give some idea as to whether these tigers are just frequenting these forest zones in search of prey or a few of them have made these areas their permanent habitat,” a forest official said.

    MS Education Academy

The forest department believes that tigers are frequenting these forest zones due to three developments. The first is of course occasional capture of tigers by the existing camera traps. The second is the occasional spotting of tiger excreta and pugmarks in these areas. The third is the recovery of body parts of large herbivorous animals like bison, which are not possible for the leopards in these zones to kill.

“So, the forest department has decided to install 1,500 additional camera traps in these three reserve forest zones to get more information about the big cats. Unlike the ones already installed there, the new camera traps will all be imported high-end ones,” the forest official said.

The forest department has already outlined an ambitious plan to reestablish the Buxa Tiger Reserve as an ideal abode for Royal Bengal tigers. An agreement has been signed with the Assam government to bring a couple of tigers from there and release them in the Buxa Tiger Reserve to increase the big cat population.

Since 1998, there has been no evidence confirming the presence of tigers in the BTR. But in December 2021, a tiger was spotted in the forest reserve zone. It was, however, later confirmed that the big cat had migrated to the zone temporarily.
