Hyderabad: CBI grills Kadapa MP’s father in Viveka murder case for 5th day

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continued questioning Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy’s father Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy and their follower Uday Kumar Reddy for a fifth day on Sunday in former minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.

The duo was brought from Chanchalguda Jail to the CBI office.

The CBI court had sent them to six-day custody of the central agency last week, which will expire on Monday.

    MS Education Academy

The probe agency officials were questioning the accused about the motive behind the murder.

Bhaskar Reddy was arrested by the CBI on April 16, just two days Uday Kumar Reddy was arrested on April 14 in Pulivendula town of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. Both were brought to Hyderabad where a court sent them to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will hear on Monday the petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy challenging the Telangana High Court order granting protection to Avinash Reddy from arrest till April 25.

Observing that an “atrocious and unacceptable” order was passed by the high court, a bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha on Friday stayed proceedings before the high court and issued notice on the plea challenging protection to Reddy

The Supreme Court, however, directed the CBI not to arrest the MP till April 24.

Avinash Reddy, cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Redddy, has been appearing before the CBI as per the interm order of the Telangana High Court on his anticipatory bail petition.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula on March 15, 2019, weeks before the elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

TSRTC to appoint ‘Village Bus Officers’ across Telangana

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has decided to introduce an innovative program to bring public transportation closer to the public.

It has chosen to hire bus officers in villages to attract people to it and has charged them with spreading information about numerous ‘citizen-friendly measures’ being implemented for the convenience of the public.

“These Village Bus Officers are expected to maintain constant contact with the villagers and village elders, as well as hold fortnightly meetings to solicit feedback and suggestions for improving bus services in the village.” TSRTC chairman Bajireddy Govardhan stated.

    MS Education Academy

“Their contact information will be kept at the Gramme Panchayat. In the form of a letter, the village sarpanch will be notified about the information of their local bus officer,” he added.

Sajjanar stated Village Bus Officers would collect information on marriages, auspicious festivals, and fairs in villages and explain the RTC services available for such occasions. If traffic is heavy, the number of bus rides will be increased.

The firm also chose to recognise and reward high-performing designated individuals.

Currently, RTC provides bus service to around 10,000 villages across the state and has chosen to appoint over 2,000 village bus officers.

  • Eyeing national role, KCR pushes for caste census but not Bihar model

Eyeing national role, KCR pushes for caste census but not Bihar model

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: While Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has been supporting the demand for caste-based census, its government in Telangana may come under pressure from the backward classes (BCs) to conduct a survey in the state on the lines of the exercise being undertaken in Bihar.

Backward classes groups are demanding the K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR)-led government to issue an order to conduct the caste census of BCs in the state as the BJP-led government at the Centre is refusing to undertake the exercise at the national level.

As KCR has changed Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) into BRS to expand the party activities across the country, the BC groups feel that by taking an initiative for a caste census in Telangana, can send the right message to BCs across the country.

    MS Education Academy

These groups have even offered to extend help to BRS in other states if it comes out with an order to conduct the BC caste census in Telangana.

BC Sankshema Sangham national president Jajula Srinivas Goud has urged the KCR to take the initiative in Telangana as this would help him win the hearts of BCs in other states. “If a GO (Government Order) is issued for caste census in Telangana, we are ready to enlighten BCs and OBCs in states where BRS wants to contest,” he said.

He believes that by conducting a caste census KCR can build a national image. “He is trying to project the Telangana model before the entire country to expand BRS in other states. The caste census will further consolidate this Telangana model,” he said.

However, BRS has not yet reacted to this demand. Political observers say that the party has taken a stand in support of the caste census but it will tread cautiously on taking any step on its own which may politically boomerang.

The ruling party may skirt the issue in the run-up to Assembly elections scheduled later this year. Some leaders have already mentioned that the power of conducting the census rests with the Centre.

Chairman of Telangana State Commission for Backward Classes, Vakulabarnam Krishna Mohan Rao has demanded that the Centre transfer the subject to the concurrent list. He claimed that the state government is committed to conducting a caste census of BCs but it is for the Centre to facilitate this.

In October 2021, Telangana Assembly passed a resolution seeking caste wise census of the Backward Class to be conducted while holding the general census for 2021.

KCR had told the Assembly that BCs constitute nearly 50 per cent of Telangana’s population. He pointed out that various political parties and State Assemblies in the country had passed resolutions seeking caste census.

While introducing the resolution, the Chief Minister had said: “In view of the upliftment of poorer sections of the society, it was necessary to maintain accurate statistics for taking up various welfare measures for benefitting the poorest of the poor.”

“…Second Telangana Legislative Assembly hereby with a view to ensure that provisions of clause IV of Article 15, clause V of Article 15 and clause VI of Article 16 regarding the socially and educationally backward classes of citizens as also the provisions of clause VI of Article 243 D and clause VI of Article 243 E regarding backward classes of citizens urges the Central government that the caste wise census of backward classes of citizens be conducted while holding the general census for 2021,” reads the resolution.

KCR argues that the caste census, as part of the Census, is necessary to identify socially, economically, and educationally backward communities and increase reservations proportionate to their population.

He slammed the BJP government at the Centre for submitting an affidavit in the Supreme Court, expressing its inability to take up the caste-based census in the country. He found a mismatch between the population and the reservation extended to Scheduled Caste (SCs) and said there was a need to increase the existing reservations for SC communities from the existing 15 per cent owing to a rise in the communities’ population.

He invoked Dr B.R. Ambedkar and said that the Centre must continue with the aspirations of the architect of the Indian Constitution to ensure social justice to the SCs

He pointed out that people belonging to the backward classes and scheduled castes (SCs) are also demanding a caste census. “The SC population was fixed at 15 per cent long back but with authority, I can say that it has now crossed 17 per cent. In some states it even crossed 19 per cent,” he said.

KCR had said that the population of SCs in Telangana was 17 per cent of the total state population, with about 18 lakh Dalit families living across the state.

“But in some districts such as Mancherial, the SC population is 26 per cent. It is 22 per cent in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, 21 per cent in Jangaon, Khammam, Rangareddy, and Vikarabad, and 20 per cent in Karimnagar. Hyderabad has the lowest SC population with about 11 per cent,” he said, quoting the Samagra Kutumba Survey or comprehensive household survey, conducted by the state government in 2014.

The BRS leader has also found “fault” with the Modi government for not holding the census exercise in the country. He pointed out that the process of census began way back in 1871 and it continued uninterrupted till 2011.

He pointed out that even during the two world wars, it didn’t stop. KCR said that it’s only through census does a government know what the situation is in the country. He alleged that the Modi government is not conducting a census because it was afraid of people knowing the facts.

KCR argued that caste census of backward classes would help in evolving appropriate policies and programmes for their welfare.

“The Centre is saying it’s a sensitive issue. Why it’s a sensitive issue. We have a caste system in the country. Why should we be ashamed of it? Are the governments not issuing caste certificates,” he asked.

With the Congress party aggressively taking up the issue of caste census, KCR is also likely to be under pressure to come out with a strategy.

Karnataka: BJP govt dropped 182 hate crime FIRs between July 2019- April 2023

    [ad_1]

The BJP government in Karnataka issued seven separate orders to drop the prosecution in 385 criminal cases, including 182 cases of hate speech, cow vigilantism, and communal violence, over a four-year period from July 2019 to April 2023, the state home department stated as a response to an RTI filed by the Indian Express.

Over 1,000 people benefited from the dismissal of communal crime charges, including a BJP MP and MLA. In the overall withdrawal procedure, 2000 accused were granted relief.

The majority of the 182 cases with communal links withdrawn pertained to the Congress government’s tenure between 2013 and 2018.

    MS Education Academy

Between 2013 and 2018, the Congress government in Karnataka, led by then chief minister Siddaramaiah, ordered the dismissal of 176 cases involving nearly 1,600 activists from the Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI), the majority of which were related to violations of prohibitory orders.

45 of the 182 charges dismissed by the BJP government had to do with suspected rightwing activist violence in the Uttara Kannada area in December 2017, following the murder of a Hindu youngster, Paresh Mesta.

The CBI eventually determined that it was an accident. Courts largely followed the government’s direction to withdraw cases.

A civil judge and magistrate in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada, disregarded a government decision on February 28, 2023, to dismiss prosecution against 66 persons in the communal violence after Mesta’s case, and committed the matter for trial, according to the Indian Express report.

  • Karnataka: B L Santhosh draws the ire of state bigwigs for BJP’s experiments

Karnataka: B L Santhosh draws the ire of state bigwigs for BJP’s experiments

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Political circles here are abuzz with BJP national general secretary (organization) B.L. Santhosh’s role in the saffron party’s new experiment in Karnataka ahead of the assembly polls.

The BJP’s decision to rest senior party leaders Jagadish Shettar, Laxman Savadi and K.S. Eshwarappa has been taken by Santhosh. He also ensured the sidelining of former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa and the denial of a ticket to his son B.Y. Vijayendra from Varuna constituency in the 2018 assembly elections, according to sources.

Though there was a tussle between Yediyurappa and Santhosh throughout his tenure, surprisingly Yediyurappa has now defended Santhosh and condemned statements against him.

    MS Education Academy

It is claimed that Santhosh is nursing ambitions of becoming the CM of Karnataka as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier become the CM of Gujarat. Modi was also holding the position of national general secretary (organization). Presently Santhosh also has the same post.

The BJP faction against Santhosh says that he wants to take over the post of CM from the backdoor and on the pretext of strengthening the party is preparing the ground for himself. Those in his favour say that Santhosh is grooming a new generation of leaders for the future and he is not interested in power.

Former BJP CM Jagadish Shettar who joined the Congress had lashed out at Santhosh, holding him responsible for his exit from the saffron party. The BJP is losing seats one after the other. The party is not sure whether it wants to come to power, Shettar said.

In the past, Santhosh has been made the in-charge of elections in other states, but the BJP could not win anywhere. In spite of this, he had been given the charge of Karnataka. This is only being done to make the party lose in the state, he claimed.

One individual has become important and he has kept everything under his control. Santhosh will ruthlessly trample on those who are not in his favour. “His protege Mahesh Tenginakayi has got the ticket for my constituency in the BJP. To get him this ticket, I was humiliated and thrown out by Santhosh,” Shettar stated.

There is a conspiracy to finish off the BJP in the state. Even Yediyurappa is helpless. There is suffocation in all district offices. State BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel is a close associate of Santhosh. Kateel will act as per his directions, Shettar charged.

Senior BJP leader Prabhakar Kore stated that the developments in the state were not brought to the notice of PM Modi. The middle persons are carrying them out. “If they think they can finish off the Lingayat community leadership, it is impossible,” he said. There are rumours that Kore is also seriously contemplating quitting the party.

Reacting to these charges, B.L. Santhosh, who keeps a distance from the media, replied on his social media account with a quote from the Upanishads, “Charaivethi, Charaivethi yahi to mantra hai apna” (Keep Moving, Keep Moving, this is my mantra).

Sources said that Santhosh and Union Minister for Mines, Coal and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi, who hails from the state, are together hatching a plan to gain supremacy in state politics. They have now managed to sideline Yediyurappa, Eshwarappa, Jagadish Shettar and Laxman Savadi.

Former deputy CM R. Ashoka has been given the formidable task of defeating Karnataka Congress president D.K. Shivakumar in his constituency. Another senior Lingayat leader V. Somanna has been entrusted the uphill task of trouncing Opposition leader Siddaramaiah in his Varuna constituency.

If these frontline leaders who are competitors for the CM’s post are sidelined or thrown out from the party, there will be no one to raise a voice against Santhosh and Joshi in Karnataka, sources explained.

By and large Karnataka is a peaceful state and the north Karnataka region is known for unity among Hindus and Muslims. Unlike other places, it is common in the villages of north Karnataka to see Hindus and Muslims living as good neighbours. The Hindutva card won’t work here like in Uttar Pradesh, as the state does not have a similar atmosphere.

  • Karnataka: SDPI fields Ismail Shafi Bellare, accused in BJP leader’s murder

Karnataka: SDPI fields Ismail Shafi Bellare, accused in BJP leader’s murder

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The move by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) to field Ismail Shafi Bellare, accused in the murder of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Kumar Nettaru, and Riyaz Farangipet as its candidates in the communally-sensitive Dakshina Kannada district has become a topic of discussion in Karnataka ahead of the May 10 Assembly elections.

Nettaru (32) was hacked to death by bike-borne assailants on the night of July 26 last year at Bellare in Dakshina Kannada district.

SDPI is fielding 19 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. Dubbed as a party of minorities, SDPI hopes to win four to five seats and make entry into the Karnataka legislature. According to sources, SDPI is likely to give a tough fight to former minister and senior Congress leader U.T. Khader in the Mangaluru (Ullal) Assembly constituency.

    MS Education Academy

The party emphasizes on ‘agitative politics’.

Talking to IANS, SDPI’s national secretary Riyaz Farangipet said that his party is not just active during elections, but throughout the year it represents the people on one issue or the other across India.

“Despite not being in power, SDPI ensures that the schemes of the government reaches the poor,” he said.

Other political parties which have opened online help centres are charging money for their services, but SDPI is doing it for free, he said.

“We are not power hungry. We want to be part of power. That is why we are focusing only on those constituencies where we can win,” said Farangipet, who is contesting from the Mangaluru (Ullal) Assembly constituency.

Ismail Shafi Bellare, who’s presently lodged in jail in connection with Nettaru’s murder, is contesting from the Puttur Assembly seat. The decision of the SDPI to field a candidate accused of murder has made national headlines. Even Farangipet has faced sedition charges and his movements are being closely watched by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

According to sources, the SDPI has fielded a formidable candidate in the form of Farangipet to wrest the Mangaluru seat from the Congress. The constituency is considered as a Congress bastion.

Farangipet was accused of hatching a conspiracy to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Phulwari Sharif area in Bihar on July 12, 2022. A probe reportedly revealed his links with the accused persons. Even the NIA had filed an FIR against Farangipet, who allegededly took part in meetings with the accused persons.

There are also other cases lodged against him in Belthangady, Mangaluru South, Konaje, and Mangaluru North in Dakshina Kannada district. He is facing charges of creating enmity between groups, and obstructing the duty of policemen.

Farangipet had taken out a huge rally to file his nomination for the Mangaluru constituency. Sources said that the SDPI is aggressively campaigning against Congress candidate Khader in the wake of the hijab controversy and the boycott call on Muslim traders.

Khader has won from this constituency three times since 2008 by defeating BJP candidates. In 2018, Khader defeated Santhosh Kumar Rai Boliyaru of the BJP by more than 19,000 votes. The BJP had won this seat three consecutive times between 1994 and 2004.

Khader, known as a progressive leader, is facing stiff competition from the SDPI this time in the Muslim-dominated constituency. It was the only constituency that the Congress won in Dakshina Kannada district in 2018, as all the other seats were swept by the BJP.

Reacting to the sedition charges against him, Farangipet said, “Cases are always lodged against people who take up big agitations. We can see IPS officer Sanjeev Bhat being jailed. Our Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers have gone to jail. I will fight the cases lodged against me in the court.”

When asked about Nettare murder accused Shafi Bellare, he said that his arrest was pre-planned.

Bellare and his brother Iqbal Bellare have been arrested due to the pressure put by the Sangh Parivar, he claimed.

“We will question his arrest in the court,” Farangipet said.

Bellare was chosen as an SDPI candidate at the screening committee meeting before Nettare’s murder, but the announcement was pending, Farangipet claimed, adding that contesting elections from prison is not new in India.

“SDPI has created its own vote bank. If Bellare is elected, he will be the voice of the exploited and downtrodden, otherwise he will continue with his social work,” Farangipet said.

  • Why this man has not slept since the night Atiq was killed

Why this man has not slept since the night Atiq was killed

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Ramakant Dubey, an official of the Prayagraj-based Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS), has not slept peacefully since April 15, the day gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead.

Dubey has sought security cover for himself and his family since he and his family apprehend retaliation from the henchmen of slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad.

It was Dubey who had lodged an FIR against Atiq in February 2017 that had led to the arrest of the latter.

    MS Education Academy

After this, the gangster-turned-politician never walked free — right till his death on April 15 night.

On December 14, 2016, Atiq Ahmed, along with a dozen henchmen, had created ruckus at SHUATS in support of a youngster (a student at the deemed university) who also used to give tuition to Ahmed’s two youngest sons.

After being rusticated by SHUATS officials on charges of cheating during examinations, the youth had sought Atiq’s support to force officials to revoke the rustication order.

Atiq asked SHUATS officials to withdraw the rustication order, but when they refused citing rules, the gangster and his henchmen barged on to the campus in Naini and allegedly beat up whoever they found there.

He even went to the Vice-Chancellor’s office.

Unable to find him there, he allegedly assaulted SHUATS PRO Ramakant Dubey after locking the room. If the FIR in this regard is to be believed, he even threatened to kill him.

Guddu Muslim and Sabir (now accused in lawyer Umesh Pal murder) were also present along with Atiq, police officials confirmed.

“I got the FIR lodged on the day of the incident at Naini police station and he was arrested in February 2017 after the Allahabad high court questioned the police over delay in action against him and sent him to jail,” recalled Ramakant Dubey.

The arrest led to many more cases being registered against Atiq and he never could secure bail despite several efforts in lower courts and the Allahabad High Court.

He said that Atiq and his supporters held him responsible for the troubles he faced after his arrest in the SHUATS case.

After he was killed along with his brother Khalid Azeem while on police remand in Prayagraj on April 15, Dubey said: “I fear that his henchmen, who are on the run, could target me in retaliation. I had approached local officials for my security, but in vain.

“Therefore, on April 18, I wrote to the chief minister, UP DGP, principal secretary (home), ADG (Prayagraj zone), district magistrate-Prayagraj and Prayagraj police Commissioner seeking security.”

Dubey claimed that he had received threats from Atiq while he was in state jails and even when the gangster was in Sabarmati jail of Gujarat.

He said officials were informed about these threat calls from time to time but no action was taken.

  • No tickets for Muslims from BJP, so why are they upset with Congress?

No tickets for Muslims from BJP, so why are they upset with Congress?

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Muslims in Karnataka, who comprise a significant group in terms of numbers, are feeling the heat of polarisation politics. The community, which has backed the Congress since Independence, is now tilting towards other emerging political parties to stay relevant.

Under the BJP government, the state passed through the hijab crisis which attracted international attention and divided the community at the school and pre-university levels. Following this, calls to boycott Muslim traders in the premises of Hindu temples and revenge killings have shattered their mindset.

The entire community had to bear the brunt for the action of a few fringe elements who carried out the Mangaluru cooker blast and stabbed Hindu activists over the installation of Veer Savarkar’s flexes in the 75th year of Independence.

    MS Education Academy

The investigations by the Karnataka police and the National Investigation Agency into the spate of incidents of violence cornered them.

The BJP government headed by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai sent out a further message of alienation by visiting only the residences of Hindu victims who were BJP activists and not even bothering to visit the Muslim victims.

Even as the opposition raised a hue and cry over this, the BJP government did not bother to issue any clarification in this regard. Karnataka Congress president D.K. Shivakumar said that the Muslim community does not deserve this hatred, they have contributed equally to the country.

However, the tone was set for the assembly elections and the Congress had also taken the bait. Hindu candidates were preferred over Muslims while allotting tickets considering the polarisation of votes affecting the chances of victory.

Mohammad Haneef, senior journalist and author, told IANS that Muslims have stopped blindly trusting the Congress party. “The demand was made to the Congress before elections to allot at least 30 tickets to Muslim candidates in 224 seats. The community leaders hoped that at least 22 tickets would be allotted. The Congress is actually fearing the BJP,” he said.

He stated that Muslims blindly voted for Congress candidates belonging to other communities and religion. However, others won’t vote for the Congress candidates who are Muslims. They (Muslims) are looking out for parallel options wherever the Congress came in third place to stop communal forces from coming to power.

Haneef said that this has been discussed by religious leaders and a decision has been taken. In constituencies like Channapatna and Dasarahalli, the JD(S) is a better option for Muslims than the Congress. Not only Muslims, even Jains, Buddhists or any other representatives from the 20 per cent population of minorities were not to be seen in the BJP cabinet.

The Congress has allotted tickets to 14 Muslims out of the 224 assembly seats. Most of them are senior leaders who can win on their own. The party has fielded Yasir Ahamad Khan Pathan against Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in Shiggaon constituency.

Karnataka Congress leader Tanveer Sait representing Narasimharaja in Mysuru, U.T. Khader representing Mangaluru (Ullal) in Dakshina Kannada, Zameer Ahmad winning continuously from Chamarajpet in Bengaluru are mass leaders who have transcended the barriers of religion and reached out to all sections. Rizwan Arshad representing Shivajinagar is emerging as another mass leader with a clean image.

The BJP has not allotted tickets to any Muslim.

The JD(S) has made C.M. Ibrahim the state president of the party. It has given tickets to 23 Muslim candidates this time.

Meanwhile, amid all the divisive talk and tension in the state, the news of Tabassum Sheik emerging as the topper in the II PUC (Class 12) board exams in the Humanities stream has gone a long way in spreading positivity across the state.

Bodies of two missing Indian students recovered from US lake

    [ad_1]

New York: Bodies of two Indiana University students from India who went missing at a lake last week, have been recovered after a massive search that was hampered by severe weather conditions, officials said.

Siddhant Shah, 19, and Aryan Vaidya, 20, went swimming at Monroe Lake, roughly 64 miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis, with a group of friends on April 15 but didn’t resurface, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said in a news release.

The bodies were located and recovered by search crews on April 18 east of the Paynetown Marina in 18 feet of water.

    MS Education Academy

The two were boating on a pontoon when their group anchored to swim in the lake, which is 10,750 acres and 35-40 feet deep.

“When both men did not resurface, friends tried to help but were unsuccessful,” the release said.

One of the men had been struggling in the water when others jumped in to help, said Lt. Angela Goldman, a Department of Natural Resources representative, told USA Today.

Rescuers started searching the lake using sonar and scuba divers, but were forced to pause operations on the first day due to windy weather conditions.
