UAE-based Indian amputee footballer climbs 640-metre tall Jebel Al-Noor

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: In a remarkable display of grit and determination, a UAE-based Indian amputee footballer climbed the historic 640-metre-tall Jebel Al-Noor mountain in Makkah.

Climbing the steps of the mountain using his crutches, Mohammed Shafeeq inspired millions around the world. His feat is not just a physical feat, but a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit.

Jebel Al-Noor is a mountain in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Saudi Arabia, with great religious significance for the Muslim community. It is the site of the cave where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his first revelation from Allah.

    MS Education Academy

When the 34-year-old reached the summit, Shafeeq was greeted by many pilgrims who were inspired by his tenacity and courage.

Shafeeq, who hails from Malappuram district in Kerala, was overwhelmed with the love and support he received and felt proud of having accomplished something that is difficult for many healthy people.

He was also accompanied by three friends, who work in Saudi Arabia, during the holy month of Ramzan.

“We started the climb around 6 am from the base after the dawn prayer. It took me around one hour and 45 minutes to reach the peak. Usually, normal people take around one and a half hours.”

“I feel very blessed about it. This experience also made me realise how much struggle the Prophet [PBUH] might have faced while climbing this mountain back in those days.”

    Shafeeq told Gulf News.

    Watch the video below

Shafeeq lost his right leg above the knee in a tragic accident in 2004 when he was a teenager. His journey to the summit is the latest in a series of remarkable achievements in his life.

In November 2022, Shafeeq walked all the way up the UAE’s highest mountain Jebel Jais using crutches.

In March last year, he represented India for the first time in the West Asian Football Championship for Amputees which was held in Kish Island, Iran.

In 2021, Shafeeq also climbed the steep Wayanad Ghat in Kerala state to show his solidarity with the farmers’ protest in India.

  • Jaishankar joins Guyana’s President Ali at commissioning of India-made ferry

Jaishankar joins Guyana’s President Ali at commissioning of India-made ferry

    [ad_1]

Georgetown: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar joined President of Guyana Irfaan Ali at the commissioning of an India-made ferry which would enhance connectivity and provide mobility and economic opportunities in the country’s distant hinterlands.

The ferry is truly a testimony of the close friendship between our two countries, Jaishankar said at the launch ceremony.

“MV Ma Lisha means friendship. The ferry made by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata is its practical expression. This ferry would significantly enhance connectivity within Guyana. It will provide mobility and economic opportunities for distant hinterlands,” Jaishankar tweeted.

    MS Education Academy

The vessel serves the dual purpose of being a passenger and a cargo ferry in Guyana. It can carry almost 300 passengers, 14 cars, two trucks, 14 containers and other assorted cargo.

He said it was important to look at the ferry and consider the larger context, which is that of the long-standing development partnership between India and Guyana.

“Our cooperation is human-centric, it reflects the priorities of the people and the Government of Guyana. Over the years our two countries have collaborated in several areas of interest, which directly impact the lives of the people,” Jaishankar said.

Some of the notable projects in Guyana include a cricket stadium in Georgetown, a Centre for Excellence in IT, modernisation of sugar plants and installation of solar traffic lights, he said.

“I want to underline today, that we remain committed to continuing to support Guyana’s developmental goals and to work with this country, on projects of its interest and priorities,” the minister said.

Cooperation in human resource development has also been an important feature of the bilateral ties. So far, 640 Guyanese nationals have benefited from India’s Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programmes, which are designed to enhance skills and capacity building, he said.

“It would be India’s privilege to partner Guyana on our premier training institutions, universities and learning institutions. We would also be happy to work with Guyana to build a modern ecosystem of institutes for training and capacity building, to meet its growing requirements,” he said.

Jaishankar noted that the visits of both President Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo in quick succession to India have infused new energy in the bilateral relationship.

He also said that the arrival of the ferry and his own visit are milestones in ties and an indication that the two countries were moving to the next phase of their bilateral cooperation.

Jaishankar is on a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, his first visit as the external affairs minister to these Latin American countries and the Caribbean

NHRC issues notices to Haryana govt, Gurugram municipality over sewer death

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Haryana government, the Gurugram Police and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram after the decomposed body of a man was pulled out from an open sewer.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, the commission said it is issuing the notices “over the reported death of the man after falling into a open sewer in Gurugram”.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said Badshahpur police personnel received information on April 20 that foul smell was coming out from an open sewer manhole near the Vatika Chowk area on Sohna Road. When a police team reached there, they spotted a body inside the sewer, it said.

    MS Education Academy

The decomposed body was taken out by a fire brigade team from the 10-feet-deep sewer, it said and added that a laptop bag, a mobile phone and a power bank were also recovered.

Reportedly, the documents in the bag suggested that he belonged to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, the commission said.

SHO Badshahpur police station Inspector Madan Lal had said, “The body was decomposed. Laptop bag was found in the hand of the deceased. Apart from a laptop, a mobile and a power bank have been found in it.”

“According to a document found in the laptop bag, the deceased may be about 30 years old Dinesh Kumar, a resident of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, but it is not appropriate to say this before identification. We kept the body in the mortuary and tried to identify it,” he had said.

The NHRC has issued notices to the Haryana chief secretary, the Gurugram Commissioner of Police and the Commissioner, Gurugram Municipal Corporation, calling for a detailed report in the matter, including action taken against the guilty after a thorough enquiry into the matter, within four weeks.

The commission has also sought details about the compensation granted to the next of kin of the deceased and the steps taken or proposed to be taken to ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not recur and precious human lives are not lost in the future.

The report must contain the status of the investigation being conducted by the police as well as the department concerned, in the matter, it said.

Telangana: Twelve-day Manjeera Kumbha Mela begins

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Manjeera Kumbha Mela began with religious fervour and pomp at Sri Siddi Saraswathi Kshetram in Raghavapur village in Nyalkal mandal of Sangareddy District in Telangana State on Monday.

The 12-day Manjeera Kumbha Mela attracts pilgrims from not only Telangana and Andhra Pradesh but also the neighbouring States of Karnataka and Maharashtra besides Naga Sadhus and other sadhus from North India.

The Manjeera Kumbha Mela was first organised in 2010 by Panchavati Kshetra Seer Kasinath Baba, followed by in 2013 and 2018. But due to Covid, it was put off and is held after a gap of 5 years.

    MS Education Academy

This 12-day Manjeera Kumbha Mela will be held from April 24 to May 5. Manjeera Kumbha Mela is the only one to be held in South India.

Panchavati Kshetram Peethadhi Kashinath Babu hoisted the festival flag and took a dip in the holy river along with other devotees to launch the Manjeera Kumbha Mela.

As part of the ritual, Ganga Aarthi is offered to the Manjeera River every day in the evening.

Bidar Shiva Kumar Swamy, Zaheerabad and Narayankhed MLAs K Manik Rao, M Bhupal Reddy, Sangareddy District Collector A Sharath, DCMS chairman Malkapuram Shiva Kumar and others participated in the inaugural programme on Monday. Health and Finance Minister T Harish Rao will attend the Kumbha Mela on April 28.

According to Panchavati Kasinath Baba, about three lakh devotees will attend the Kumbh Mela.

    IMG 20230424 WA0086

District Cooperative and Marketing Society (DCMS) Malkapuram Shiva Kumar told Newsmeter that all arrangements have been made for the Manjeera Kumbh Mela and basic facilities, transport, and medicare has been organised for the visit of devotees all through the Kumbh mela days.

River Manjeera is a tributary of River Godavari, which originates in Balaghat range in Maharashtra, very close to Gavalwadi village in Beed District. The river travels 724 km in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana States before reaching Godavari River downstream Nizam Sagar. It enters Telangana at Gauda Gav.

Hindus celebrate Kumbha Mela four times in a span of 12 years—the site rotating between four pilgrimage places on sacred rivers like Haridwar on Ganga River, Ujjain on Shipra, Nashik on Godavari River and Prayag Raj on the confluence of Ganga and Jamuna and Saraswathi. Each celebration is based on planetary position of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter decided by pundits.

According to history, Kumbh Mela’s origin began in the 8th century when philosopher Shankara organised regular gatherings while in Puranas it is said Gods and demons fought over the pot (kumbha) of Amrit, the elixir of immortality produced by their joint churning of the milky ocean.

    IMG 20230424 WA0083

It is believed, drops of the elixir fell on the Kumbh Mela’s four earthly sites, and the rivers are believed to turn back into that primordial nectar giving devotees to bathe in the essence of purity. Kumbh comes from this mythic pot of elixir.

Don’t test our patience: Hyderabad police association warns Sharmila

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Police Officers Association has condemned the YSR Telangana Party chief Y S Sharmila over her assault on police personnel earlier in the day while she was being detained by the Telangana police on Monday.

In a press release, Vijayamma and the Hyderabad City Police Officers’ Association president Nalla Shankar Reddy condemned Sharmila’s behaviour towards police personnel.

“We strongly condemn Sharmila’s behaviour, rudeness and assaulting the police. Such actions should not test the police’s patience by hurting their self-esteem. In the recent past, some political leaders with positions of power have, in the past, tried to undermine the morale of the police which such cheap measures,” the statement read.

    MS Education Academy

The Telangana Police has the highest recognition in the country in monitoring peace and security in society and controlling crime, the press release ended.

Following the assault, Y S Sharmila was arrested on a complaint by a sub-inspector. Her two drivers were also booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Police Joel Davis said police had gone to Sharmila’s house following information that she was going to the office of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) question paper leak. Since there was no permission for Sharmila’s visit to the SIT office, the police personnel were trying to explain the same to her but she assaulted police personnel.

The driver of Sharmila’s car also did not stop the car on the order of the police and hit them, injuring constable Giribabu.

Sharmila’s husband Anil Kumar later went to Jubilee Hills police station and met her.

  • Reservation based on religion unconstitutional, says Amit Shah in poll-bound Karnataka

Reservation based on religion unconstitutional, says Amit Shah in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Hubballi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said reservation based on religion was unconstitutional, and asserted that the BJP would implement the quota formula adopted by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai-led government in Karnataka.

He said BJP has given tickets for May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka on merits of winnability, and not on the basis of majority or minority, and also nowhere a non-Lingayat candidate has replaced a Lingayat.

Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar who recently quit BJP and joined Congress will not win the polls this time, Shah declared, as he pointed out that Hubballi-Dharwad has always voted for BJP.

    MS Education Academy

“I want to assure the people of Karnataka that whatever formula of reservation that has been adopted by the Bommai government, we would implement it on the ground, including the sub category reservation (internal reservation) among the Dalits. This is our promise,” Shah said.

Addressing a press conference here, he said reservation on the basis of religion was unconstitutional, and never would it have “permission” under the Constitution.

About the reservation crossing 50 per cent, Shah said, “it has been challenged in the court, wait for its order.”

Congress leaders are saying that they would once again bring in Muslim reservation. “I want to ask them with utmost humility as to whose would you reduce to bring it back? Whether you would reduce Vokkaligas or Lingayats or Dalits or STs. Congress will have to come out clear on this.”

“Those Muslim community categories that are under OBC, we are ready to give them reservation even today and we are giving, but no one should be given reservation based on religion, it is the fundamental spirit of the Constitution,” he added.

Just ahead of the announcement of polls in Karnataka, the State Cabinet led by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had decided to scrap the four per cent reservation for Muslims under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota and to distribute it equally among the dominant Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities.

Earlier, the government had decided to increase reservation for SCs from 15 per cent to 17 per cent and for STs from 3 per cent to 7 percent, taking the total reservation in Karnataka to 56 per cent, exceeding the 50 per cent cap, and recommended to the Centre to bring it under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.

With a section of Scheduled Castes demanding internal reservation alleging that only a few influential sub-castes were taking away a majority of the benefits while many communities were still marginalised, the Cabinet had also made a recommendation in this regard to the Centre.

Asserting that there is no single instance of a non-Lingayat being given a ticket replacing a Lingayat, Shah hit out at the Congress by asking as to what the party did for the community.

“In their history, Congress made two Lingayats Chief Ministers, both were humiliated and removed, one was removed by Indira Gandhi, while the other was humiliated and removed from airport by Rajiv Gandhi, I’m speaking about Patil Saab (Veerendra Patil), Congress cannot speak on this,” he said, as he added that BJP respects all communities and try to take along everyone.

Asked about family members of politicians getting tickets, while BJP accused JD(S) of parivarwaad (dynastic), the Union Minister said, unlike in JD(S), in BJP party president and Chief Ministers are not decided on the basis of the family. “Tell me someone who is not contesting polls in JD(S) family (Deve Gowda family), other than one or two.”

“BJP is always against parivarwaad in the main system, at many places family members of party karyakartas may contest polls, but it doesn’t mean BJP follows parivarwaad,” he said.

To a question on Muslims not getting tickets from BJP, he said, “Tickets were given on the basis of merits of winnability, we do not believe in the concept of majority or minority.”

Responding to a question on Congress seeking support of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Shah said Congress party earlier used to take the support of Popular Front of India (PFI); now that it has been banned, it is asking support of its SDPI which is the political wing. “For Congress, secure and safe Karnataka is not important, winning elections is important. BJP will not join hands with such parties.”

Jagadish Shettar quitting BJP will cause no loss to the party, he said, adding that “Jagadish Shettar will lose the election, Hubballi has always voted for BJP not to any person. BJP workers are united….reason for him not being given the ticket was conveyed to him.”

Jagadish Shettar is contesting from Hubballi Dharwad Central constituency as Congress candidate.

KCR’s call to Maharashtra farmers: Abki baar kisan sarkar

    [ad_1]

Aurangabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday asked farmers to ensure a farmers government in their state, and called for emulating the ‘Telangana model’ of governance.

“Abki baar kisan sarkar,” said Rao, addressing his BRS party’s third public rally in Maharashtra.

He asked farmers to elect BRS in zilla parishad elections. “We want to have the Telangana model of administration in Maharashtra,” he added.

    MS Education Academy

Farmers are ending their lives, he said. It is unfortunate that farmers had to agitate in the national capital for 13 months, after which PM Modi apologized to them and gave an assurance, but nothing has happened, Rao said.

“We need out of box thinking to change India. BRS is not for any class or religion but for all people,” he said.

“We don’t have to be afraid of anything. If there is sincerity we will win. That is why BRS is here,” he said, adding the party is building a permanent office in Maharashtra.

Rao said political will was needed to resolve water and electricity supply woes facing the country.

More than double the amount of water needed is available, yet there is water scarcity, he said. “Rulers, PM, CMs lack the will,” he added.

India’s water supply planning should emulate Zimbabwe which has huge water reservoirs to cater to that country’s needs, Rao said.

This scarcity will continue till there is new structure and a new Act on water distribution, he said.

“The water the rich drink in posh Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills in Hyderabad is the same water the poor in Adilabad drink,” Rao said.

He asked why can’t Maharashtra have an insurance scheme for farmers on the lines of Telangana. “If a farmer dies in Telangana, the nominee gets Rs five lakh in 8 days,” he said.

Rao asked farmers to become MLAs and MPs, instead of just being used by leaders.

  • Broadcast bloodbath: Tucker Carlson, Don Lemon are out in major media shake-up

Broadcast bloodbath: Tucker Carlson, Don Lemon are out in major media shake-up

    [ad_1]

Carlson’s last program was Friday. “Fox News Tonight” will air at 8 p.m. EST — previously the slot for “Tucker Carlson Tonight” — starting Monday as an “interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named.”

Lemon was fiery in his response to being ousted, stating on Twitter that he was “stunned” that he had been terminated by the network.

“At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play,” he wrote.

Though, CNN, in a tweet said Lemon’s statement is “inaccurate” and that he was “offered an opportunity to meet with management but instead released a statement on Twitter.”

The exits come ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, slated for Saturday. The annual event, attended for decades by presidents from both parties, celebrates the First Amendment and honors journalists. The headliner usually takes the stage to deliver the traditional WHCA dinner roast. This year’s headliner, Roy Wood Jr., said he already threw out his script following the exits of Lemon and Carlson.

Both anchors have faced their fair share of controversy in recent months leading up to their departures on Monday.

Lemon, who had worked at CNN for 17 years, said on-air in February that presidential hopeful Nikki Haley “isn’t in her prime” and that a woman is “in her prime in her 20s, 30s, 40s.” He later apologized for the comments on Twitter and didn’t appear on “CNN This Morning” the next day.

Earlier this month, Variety published a report claiming that Lemon made other offensive comments about women on air in the past and alleged inappropriate behavior toward female colleagues at CNN.

News of Carlson’s departure came the week after Fox News settled Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation lawsuit for $787.5 million. Carlson, along with hosts Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, privately mocked regular guests such as Donald Trump’s attorneys, Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, while continuing to promote conspiracy theories to their audience.

Last month, the White House joined in widespread condemnation of Carlson, singling him out for his misleading portrayal of the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The revelations were made public as part of the lawsuit by Dominion.

Former “Tucker Carlson Tonight” producer Abby Grossberg is also suing the network after stating that she was unlawfully fired as an act of retaliation.

Carlson first joined Fox News as a contributor in 2009, and in 2017, Carlson took over the network’s 8 p.m. hour after Bill O’Reilly was forced out. Carlson was one of the most-watched hosts on the cable news network, with an average audience of 3.2 million viewers.

On Monday morning, Fox News had still been previewing Carlson’s show, teasing an interview with presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy that would air Monday night.

Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner addressed Tucker Carlson’s departure Monday by stating, “We have some news from within our Fox family. Fox News Media and Tucker Carlson have mutually agreed to part ways.”

Politicians as well as former and current TV hosts were quick to react to the news of the exits.

Former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly, who left the network in 2017, said the news was “Good for Tucker.”

“Trust me, he doesn’t need them,” Kelly said in a tweet.

Fox host Sean Hannity posted to Twitter, “*LATER LEMON!*” but did not address Carlson’s departure.

“Good News: “The dumbest man on television,’ Don Lemon, has finally been fired from Fake News CNN,” former President Donald Trump said on Truth Social. “My only question is, WHAT TOOK THEM SO LONG?” Trump posted on Truth Social.

And in a tweet, Russian-backed English-language news outlet RT News appeared to offer Carlson a job.

“Hey @TuckerCarlson, you can always question more with @RT_com,” RT News wrote.

  • Over 1cr families participate in YSRCP survey in Andhra Pradesh

Over 1cr families participate in YSRCP survey in Andhra Pradesh

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Over one crore families in Andhra Pradesh participated in the survey undertaken by the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) during the last 15 days.

Two weeks after launching a one of its kind mega people’s survey named Jagananne Maa Bhavishyathu (Jagan Anna is our future), the YSRCP on Monday released an interim report. It claimed to have received a positive response on ground.

The party held several press conferences across various assembly constituencies to celebrate a significant milestone.

    MS Education Academy

Vijayawada West MLA Vellampalli Srinivas said that the results of the mega survey reflect the public’s opinion and they are nothing but extraordinary.

“In just the first 15 days, one crore families participated in the survey and over 79 lakh missed calls have been received in support of CM Jagananna’s government,” he said.

Elaborating on the objective of the campaign, Macherla MLA Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy said that YSRCP’s aim was to survey 100 per household in the state (all 1.65 crore families in the state).

The party leaders invited all to visit any village secretariat and see the response for themselves.

“CM Jagan is a credible leader who has ushered in the era of welfare. The recent exit poll results of a national TV channel which predicted an overwhelming majority for YSRCP in the upcoming polls is proof of that,” said Assembly Speaker Tammineni Sitaram.

Hitting out at the Opposition, Kamalapuram MLA Ravindranath Reddy said that the Opposition is having sleepless nights because of the positive feedback that the Jagananne Maa Bhavishyathu is getting on ground, especially in Assembly constituencies that are traditionally considered to be Opposition strongholds.

YSRCP plans to reveal the final results of the mega survey on April 29.

The party on April 7 launched the survey, in a massive exercise to reach out to five crore people ahead of next year’s elections.

About 7 lakh grassroots workers will reach out to all 1.65 crore households in the state, covering five crore population.

This is claimed to be the most expensive and on-ground campaign done by any political party in the country.

The visiting party workers are explaining to the people about a comparison between YSRCP and TDP governments by showing a pamphlet.

The workers are carrying Praja Maddathu Pusthakam or survey questionnaire for feedback. People are being asked five questions including the question whether they trust Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for their future.

At the end of the survey, the party workers would request the public to give a missed call to the party dedicated mobile number 8296082960.

As soon as they give a missed call, a voice call of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy would be received by the caller, as a token of thanks.
