‘Joe and I look forward to finishing the job,’ says VP Harris

Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday urged Americans to come together to fight for democracy, continue to make progress, and make sure all Americans can get ahead and thrive, minutes after President Joe Biden announced his 2024 reelection bid and named her as his running mate.

“This is a pivotal moment in our history,” said Harris, who is the first woman and the first Indian American and first African American to be the vice president of the US.

President Biden on Tuesday formally announced his 2024 reelection bid with Harris as his running mate.

“For two years we have made transformational investments to build a nation in which everyone can be safe and healthy, find a good job, and retire with dignity. In response, extremists have intensified attacks on basic, foundational freedoms and rights,” Harris said in a statement soon after Biden in a video message announced his 2024 presidential bid.

“For example, they want to take away a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. They attack the sacred right to vote and attempt to silence the voice of the people. And they try to block common sense reforms to save lives and keep Americans safe from gun violence,” the 58-year-old democrat said.

“The Republicans running for President want to take our country backwards. We will not let that happen. Just like we did in 2020, we must come together to fight for our democracy, continue to make progress, and make sure all Americans can get ahead and thrive,” she said.

“Joe and I look forward to finishing the job, winning this battle for the soul of the nation, and serving the American people for four more years in the White House,” Harris said.

Meanwhile, eminent Indian-American Ajay Jain Bhutoria said that President Biden and Vice President Harris have demonstrated that they are committed to building a more equitable and prosperous America.

California-based Bhutoria said their leadership has been instrumental in helping millions of Americans during the pandemic, and their vision for the future is inspiring.

In a statement, Bhutoria also highlighted the importance of unity and a broad-based coalition to secure a victory in 2024. He called upon his fellow community leaders and grassroots organisers to rally behind the Biden-Harris campaign and build a diverse coalition that reflects the values of all Americans.

“We need leadership that is committed to bringing people together and creating a more just and prosperous future for all Americans,” said Bhutoria, who has been a long-time supporter of Biden and a major fundraiser for his campaign.

“President Biden and Vice President Harris have the experience, vision, and values that are needed to continue to move our country forward, and I am proud to support their re-election campaign,” he said.

Praising the Biden-Harris administration for its bold leadership, Bhutoria said this has resulted in significant accomplishments, such as the passage of the American Rescue Plan and the historic infrastructure package.

UAE-based Indian bizman plans to launch new Indian airline ‘Air Kerala’

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Indian businessman is planning to launch new Indian airline— Air Kerala catering to expatriates, local media reported.

Afi Ahmed, managing director of UAE-based Smart Travels, is currently exploring different strategies to turn the Air Kerala project into a reality.

In March 2023, Afi Ahmed paid local company 1 million Dirhams (Rs 2,23,26,532) for the airkerala.com domain name.

    MS Education Academy

Air Kerala had been a project that was announced by the Kerala government in 2005 and was registered as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) in 2006.

As per a report by Khaleej Times, it aims to provide a relief to Keralites living in the UAE against skyrocketing ticket prices and shortage of airline seats.

Air Kerala project has been suspended several times, despite being a hotly debated topic for years.

The domain name airkerala.com was initially purchased in 2000 by domain sales portal Executive Bachelors.com, a subsidiary of UAE-based investment company 1971.

In 2005, the site’s estimated value was around 2.5 million Dirhams. Although numerous parties have expressed interest in the domain since then, this is the first time Executive Bachelors.com has sold the coveted domain name.

“I was looking for a domain for my B2C project,” Afi Ahmed told Khaleej Times.

Since announcing his intention to revive the airline, Aafi said, he has seen an outpouring of support from the Malayali community in the UAE.

“Several businessmen have approached me and pledged to contribute money to get the project running,” he added.

  • Microsoft to stop bundling Teams with Office to avoid probe

Microsoft to stop bundling Teams with Office to avoid probe

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: To avoid an official antitrust probe by European Union (EU) regulators, Microsoft has announced that it will no longer require users of its popular Office software to also install its Teams video conferencing and messaging app on their devices.

According to the Financial Times, citing sources, Microsoft has made the concession to avoid a formal investigation, following a 2020 complaint by rival Slack (an enterprise chat app) alleging Microsoft bundling the service together was anti-competitive.

Slack has requested that EU officials compel Microsoft to sell Teams independently of its Office software.

    MS Education Academy

Slack’s complaint came at a time when the trend towards working from home was accelerating.

Apps like Teams and Slack exploded in popularity during the Covid pandemic, creating a multibillion-dollar opportunity as users and businesses increasingly adopt tools that enable remote working, the report said.

“We are mindful of our responsibilities in the EU as a major technology company. We continue to engage cooperatively with the commission in its investigation and are open to pragmatic solutions that address its concerns and serve customers well,” Microsoft was quoted as saying.

Moreover, the report said that Microsoft was accused by the commission in 2008 of using its dominant position to force users to download its Internet Explorer browser by bundling it with Windows.

Although the company settled with the commission and offered users a choice of browsers, the EU fined the company USD 561 million in 2013 for failing to fulfil its promise.

Meanwhile, Twitter CEO Elon Musk has threatened to sue Microsoft over claims that the company “trained illegally using Twitter data”.

Musk reacted after Microsoft dropped Twitter from its advertising platform as it allegedly refused to pay Twitter’s application programming interface (API) fees.

Indians among 60 delivery drivers held for working illegally in UK

    [ad_1]

London: As part of a week-long crackdown on illegal migration, 60 delivery drivers, including Indians, have been arrested across London for working illegally, the UK Home Office said.

The drivers, working for companies including Deliveroo, JustEat, and UberEats, were arrested for offences, including illegal working and possession of false documentation.

The majority of offenders were of Brazilian nationality. Indian and Algerian nationals were also found to be working without the right to do so in the country, a UK Home Office statement read.

    MS Education Academy

Of those arrested, 44 were detained by the Home Office, pending their removal from the UK, with the remaining 16 being released on immigration bail. It is also expected that a number of the arrests will result in voluntary departure from the UK.

“Illegal working damages our communities, cheats honest workers out of employment and defrauds the public purse. As the Prime Minister has set out, we are committed to going further and faster to prevent the abuse of our laws and borders,” Britain’s Indian-origin Home Secretary Suella Braverman said in a statement.

“The British public deserve a labour market that is fair and honest and must have confidence that goods and services they buy are from legitimate businesses,” she added.

The operation also led to the seizure of weapons and cash suspected of being linked to criminal activity. Following thorough searches of properties linked to the arrests, imitation firearms and other weapons were found, while over 4,500 pounds was seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act, the Home Office statement said.

Immigration Enforcement carried out extensive intelligence-gathering ahead of the operation, to identify hotspots for illegal moped delivery drivers. Alongside relevant police forces, the Home Office deployed officers on six consecutive days (16 to 21 April), to make the arrests and detentions.

Indians are among the second-largest group of migrants crossing the English Channel illegally on small boats, with 675 recorded between January and March this year, according to recent statistics released by the UK Home Office.

The UK government said is clamping down on illegal working to ensure all companies and workers are contributing to the UK economy by complying with its tax and other regulations.

More widely, it can also be a pull factor for illegal migration, often trapping vulnerable people in poor conditions and exploitation while undermining the UK’s labour market. Employers in the UK can be jailed for five years and could pay an unlimited fine if they are found guilty of employing someone they knew or had ‘reasonable cause to believe’ did not have the right to work in the UK.

  • Some cheetahs to be shifted to new habitats due to lack of space at Kuno

Some cheetahs to be shifted to new habitats due to lack of space at Kuno

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Some of the cheetahs currently housed in Madhya Pradesh’ Kuno National Park (KNP) will be shifted to new habitats in the coming months. As per the forest officials, the proposal was already part of the ‘cheetah reintroduction project’ but the fresh proposal has been made following the sudden death of male African cheetah ‘Uday’ on Sunday.

The Madhya Pradesh Forest and Wildlife Department has written to the Centre for some alternative habitats for cheetahs translocated from South Africa. J. S. Chouhan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), said the KNP spread over 748 sq kms has the capacity to accommodate a maximum of 21 cheetahs at one time. However, this number needs to be reduced to provide a larger area for each cheetah to roam in and also to ensure their safety.

“It will be a risk to keep all the cheetahs in one place and therefore, I have requested the Centre to find an alternative place to shift some of them,” J. S. Chouhan told IANS on Tuesday. However, he did not mention exactly how many cheetahs would be shifted from KNP.

    MS Education Academy

A total of 20 cheetahs (eight from Namibia and 12 from South Africa) were released in the KNP enclosure in two phases, out of which, two have died within a period of one month. Female Namibian cheetah ‘Sasha’ died of a kidney related aliment on March 27, while African male cheetah, who was given the name ‘Uday’ last week, died of cardiac arrest on Sunday.

As ‘Project Cheetah’ is monitored by the Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) under the supervision of the Ministry of Forest, it would finalise the new habitats and the number of cheetahs to be shifted. However, if sources are to be believed, at least four-five cheetahs (both male and female) would be shifted to a new habitat.

Sources told IANS that most likely the cheetahs would be shifted to Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve (MHTR), which is located in Rajasthan’s Kota district. As per the reports, cheetah experts have also recommended MHTR as the best possible site for cheetahs as it was also included in the risk management plan.

  • Google Authenticator’s new update to safely backup your one-time codes

Google Authenticator’s new update to safely backup your one-time codes

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Google Authenticator has received a new update on both iOS and Android, which adds the ability to safely backup users’ one-time codes (or one-time passwords or OTPs) to their Google Account.

“With this update we’re rolling out a solution to this problem, making one-time codes more durable by storing them safely in users’ Google Account. This change means users are better protected from the lockout and that services can rely on users retaining access, increasing both convenience and security,” Google said in a blogpost on Monday.

In 2010, the tech giant released Google Authenticator as a free and easy way for sites to add “something you have” two-factor authentication (2FA) that bolsters user security when signing in.

    MS Education Academy

Moreover, to enhance the security of online authentication, Google has been promoting a variety of options in addition to one-time codes from Authenticator.

“Google Password Manager securely saves your passwords and helps you sign in faster with Android and Chrome, while Sign in with Google allows users to sign in to a site or app using their Google Account,” the company said.

To use the new sync feature, simply update the Authenticator app.

If you use Google Authenticator while signing in to a Google Account, your codes will be automatically backed up and restored on any new device you use.

You can also manually transfer your codes to another device even if you don’t have a Google Account by following the instructions on its support page.

  • Sheikh Mohammed shares clearest image of Mars’ moon Deimos

Sheikh Mohammed shares clearest image of Mars’ moon Deimos

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has shared the clearest image ever taken of Mars moon Deimos.

On Monday, Sheikh Mohammed took to Twitter to share the detailed photographs taken by UAE’s Hope Probe, which was launched as part of the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM).

The spacecraft, which spent more than two years orbiting Mars for the first time in the Arab world, flew as close as 100 kilometers to the lunar surface to capture important data on its composition that challenges long-standing theories that the Martian moons are captured asteroids – space rocks trapped in a planet’s orbit.

    MS Education Academy

Sheikh Mohammed praised the new results, expressing his pride in the young scientists who participated in the mission and the contribution they made to the march of human knowledge.

“The Emirates Mars Mission’s “Hope Probe” has captured the clearest image of Martian moon Deimos, which is 100km away, marking a global first,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.

“Previously, theories suggested that Deimos was an outer asteroid captured in Martian orbit. However, the Hope Probe’s instruments and team have shown that the moon was once a part of Mars and separated from it millions of years ago, much like Earth’s moon,” he adds.

“We are proud of our young scientists, our knowledge and our contribution to the pursuit of human knowledge,” he added.

The UAE achieved its goal on February 9, 2021, when it became the first Arab country to enter the orbit of the Red Planet and the fifth space agency to accomplish this mission.

Since then, the Hope Probe has been broadcasting amazing pictures of the planet, revealing its geographical features and weather conditions.

  • Coinbase sues US SEC over crypto rule-making petition

Coinbase sues US SEC over crypto rule-making petition

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Leading Blockchain and cryptocurrency platform Coinbase has sued the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to compel the commission to respond yes or no to its July 2022 rule-making petition.

The petition had asked the SEC to use its formal rule-making process to provide guidance for the crypto industry.

To date, more than 1,700 entities and individuals have submitted comments to Coinbase’s petition echoing the request for clarity.

    MS Education Academy

Coinbase chief legal officer Paul Grewal said that the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) requires the SEC to respond to Coinbase’s rulemaking petition “within a reasonable time”.

“If the SEC says no to our rule-making petition, which it has the right to do, then Coinbase would be allowed to challenge that decision in court and explain in that formal setting why rulemaking is required,” Grewal said in a blog post.

He said that from the SEC’s public statements and enforcement activity in the crypto industry, it seems like the SEC has already made up its mind to deny Coinbase’s petition.

“But they haven’t told the public yet. So the action Coinbase filed today simply asks the court to ask the SEC to share its decision. This step may feel unusual, and it is, because this step is usually not needed. But it is also unusual for an agency to bring enforcement actions based on a view of the law that it has not yet shared formally with the public,” Grewal argued.

Coinbase said it is simply requesting that the Court order the SEC to respond at all, which they are legally obligated to do.

In March, the crypto exchange was put on notice by the US SEC for allegedly breaking securities laws.

The SEC gave Coinbase a “Wells notice” regarding an undefined portion of its listed digital assets, staking service Coinbase Earn, Coinbase Prime, and Coinbase Wallet after a cursory investigation.

Coinbase had said it was prepared for “this disappointing development”.
