More untimely rain adds to Telangana farmers’ woes

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: While a fresh spell of untimely rain across Telangana is causing more damage to agricultural crops, the state government has assured farmers that it will stand by them.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and state minister K.T. Rama Rao on Wednesday told farmers not to panic over the losses and assured them that the government will render all possible assistance.

KTR, as the Minister is popularly known, voiced concern over the losses incurred by farmers due to untimely rains and hailstorms in various districts.

    MS Education Academy

He asked party MLAs and other public representatives to undertake field visits in their respective constituencies and review the situation in coordination with local officials.

Advising farmers not to worry, he told them that the state government will come to their rescue.

He recalled that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao himself personally visited the affected areas, reviewed the situation and gave assurance to farmers.

With more rain expected in the next couple of days, KTR requested the officials to be available at the field level.

Agricultural crops in some districts were damaged due to unseasonal rains and hailstorms during the last 3-4 days.

KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, on Sunday directed Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari to take up the assessment of crop damages.

He asked the Chief Secretary to speak to District Collectors and get detailed reports on crop damages.

Minister for Civil Supplies Gangula Kamalar has assured farmers that the KCR government will provide 100 per cent compensation.

Unseasonal rains and hailstorms had damaged crops over 2.28 lakh acres in various parts of the state last month as well.

KCR had then visited a few affected areas and announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre.

However, after a survey the agriculture department decided to pay compensation only in respect of 1.51 lakh acres.

Officials said the money will be deposited in the bank accounts of 1,30,988 farmers.

IIT Kharagpur ‘suicide’: Calcutta HC orders second autopsy of body buried 6 months ago

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered exhumation and a second post-mortem examination of IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed’s body, which was buried in his home state Assam six months ago, saying that it is necessary to bring out the truth behind his death.

The father of the third-year student had moved the court seeking formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the death of Ahmed. His body was found in his hostel room at IIT Kharagpur in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district on October 14, 2022.

“The body of the victim Faizan Ahmed is ordered to be exhumed,” Justice Rajasekhar Mantha directed, holding that a second post-mortem examination is “vital and necessary for arriving at the truth behind his death.”

    MS Education Academy

He directed that the second post-mortem of the body of Ahmed, a mechanical engineering student who hailed from Tinsukia in Assam, be conducted at the state-run Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, after exhumation.

Noting that an affidavit of Ahmed’s parents consenting to the exhumation and a second post-mortem has been filed in court, Justice Mantha directed the investigating officer to coordinate with Assam Police for the exhumation and ordered that the West Bengal police will bring the body to Kolkata.

Justice Mantha directed that Dr Ajoy Kumar Gupta, a forensic expert appointed by the court for his opinion on the likely cause of death of Ahmed, will conduct the post-mortem examination in the presence of doctors who conducted the previous autopsy.

Adjourning the hearing in the matter till June 13, the court directed that the exercise be completed within one month from the date of order.

Gupta, a retired forensic expert of the state CID, stated in a preliminary report filed before the court that two injury marks on the back of the head of the victim were not mentioned in the first post-mortem examination report.

It said that some cut marks on the arms of the body were inflicted after the student’s death.

The police had mentioned seizure of a chemical called Emplura (sodium nitrate) in a bottle from the student’s hostel room.

Court-appointed amicus curiae Sandip Bhattacharya submitted that sodium nitrate, a yellowish powder, is normally used to preserve meat.

There was some yellowish residue in a bucket found by Gupta and Bhattacharya during their visit to the room, the report stated.

It was stated before the court that when a body decomposes, it is impossible that the fellow inmates of the hostel would not be able to detect it, but there was mysteriously no smell from the body for three days.

“The presence of this chemical Emplura opens up serious questions as regards the time of death and whether it may have been used to preserve the body after the death of the victim,” Justice Mantha observed.

  • EU environmental watchdog criticises calls to stall pesticides cut

EU environmental watchdog criticises calls to stall pesticides cut

    [ad_1]

The EU’s environmental watchdog has hit back at calls to stall a 50% cut in the use and risks of synthetic pesticides and a 20% cut in fertiliser use by 2030, arguing that the Ukraine crisis provides scant justification for delay.

EU states with the backing of powerful farm unions and centre-right parties have blocked the proposed pesticide reform unless the European Commission completes a second impact study by 28 June to assuage food security fears.

Among campaigners and scientists, anxieties are rife that the bloc’s flagship green farming pledge could be unceremoniously buried.

Dario Piselli, a European Environment Agency (EEA) expert and author of a new analysis published on Wednesday, said there were “compelling” reasons not to hesitate further with the draft law.

“There’s limited justification to use the war as a reason for postponing action,” he told the Guardian. “Food security as an issue is not only to do with immediate food supply – and a lot of the concerns there have subsided a bit compared to the beginning of the war – but with medium-long term security which is influenced by other things [like] climate change and the impact of a loss of biodiversity on food production.”

Since 1990, farmland bird and grassland butterfly populations have plunged by more than 30% in Europe, while almost one in 10 of the continent’s bees face extinction, mainly because of habitat loss caused by intensified agriculture.

In 2020, pesticide thresholds for human safety were breached at more than one in five rivers and lakes across Europe, the EEA paper says and 83% of agricultural soils tested in 2019 were also found to contain pesticide residues.

Almost the same percentage – 84% – of people tested across five European countries in 2021 were found to contain at least two pesticides in their bloodstreams, according to a large human biomonitoring study cited by the paper.

Environmentalists say this is partly down to increased pesticide sales volumes in the EU, which remained stable between 2011 and 2020 at about 350,000 tonnes a year, compared with annual averages closer to 220,000 tonnes between 1992 and 2003.

One EU country, Denmark, has cut sales by using pesticide taxes linked to product toxicity, but the commission does not expect the present modest rises in pesticide prices to affect demand.

By contrast, fertiliser sales in countries such as Germany have fallen by up to 40% after prices doubled between May 2020 and the end of 2022, owing to high gas costs and war-related supply disruptions.

One EU diplomat said this had caused “mixed feelings” in Europe’s capitals about the commission’s green farming reform. “Last year the Germans were desperate to push the proposal forward but how this will end up I don’t know,” the official said.

Another EU diplomat added: “If the pesticides regulation is dead, there is no one to blame but the commission itself. The moment it stepped away from a scientific and evidence-based approach in favour of ideology and dogmatic solutions, it condemned its flagship legal proposal.”

The commission’s targets for EU nations, which take into account actions already taken, would force Italy to cut its pesticide use and risks by 62%, Germany by 55% and France and Spain by 54%, according to a report in Politico.

Hostility to the measures is strong among Europe’s agricultural business class and in several governments, where the EU’s green deal commissioner, Frans Timmermans, is viewed darkly.

“Unless EU citizens suffer from hunger and protest in the streets, he does not care,” the first diplomat said.

In a concession to such sentiments, Brussels last year shelved a proposed ban on pesticide use in ecologically sensitive areas – so long as low-risk pesticides were used instead. But it will not abandon the goal of a less chemically drenched countryside, despite the “complex” impacts of the Ukraine conflict on food security, said Stefan De Keersmaecker, a commission spokesperson.

“We must continue making progress in the discussions so that the proposal can become a reality to protect farmers, pesticide users, citizens, vulnerable populations, and the environment,” he said. “European citizens have a clear desire to reduce the use and risk of pesticides.”

56 Andhra expatriates stranded in Sudan

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: A total of 56 expatriates from Andhra Pradesh are stranded in strife-torn Sudan and efforts are on to bring them back safely, officials said.

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed the officials to take steps to bring the stranded Telugus.

The chief minister told the officials to coordinate with the Central government officials and make travel arrangements to bring back stranded Telugus safely.

    MS Education Academy

Jagan Mohan Reddy also wanted them to ensure that they are sent to their native places on their return to India

He asked the officials to extend all possible support to the stranded Telugus as was done during the Ukraine crisis.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu Society (APNRTS) said 34 of those stranded have been found to be safe.

These expatriates have already reached Port Sudan by the coast of Red Sea and are expected to proceed further to a safe place.

According to APNRTS president Medapati Venkat, the remaining 20 people are 30 kms from the conflict zone and efforts are underway to reach out to them.

APNRTS has set up a special helpline desk to identify natives of Andhra Pradesh in Sudan.

More than 400 people have died due to the fierce fighting between Sudan’s Army and paramilitary forces during the last two weeks. The conflict has left over 3,700 people wounded.

The Government of India has launched ‘Operation Kaveri’ to evacuate Indians from the strife-torn country. There are an estimated 4,000 Indians in Sudan.

  • KCR is more dangerous than Atiq Ahmed, says Telangana BJP chief

KCR is more dangerous than Atiq Ahmed, says Telangana BJP chief

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar has made a controversial statement that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is more dangerous than gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, who was recently gunned down in Uttar Pradesh.

Sanjay Kumar tweeted on Wednesday that Chief Minister KCR is a gangster to all the gangsters. He said while Atiq Ahmed threatened people with guns, KCR is using police to threaten and ‘Dharani’ to harass common man.

‘Dharani’ is a portal launched by KCR government for land transactions.

    MS Education Academy

He reiterated the demand for a probe by a sitting judge into the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) exam paper leak. “We don’t trust the Special Investigation Team set up by the KCR government,” he said.

Sanjay Kumar, who is also a Member of Parliament, stated that SITs constituted to probe Miyapur land scam, Intermediate students’ suicides and drugs case never submitted report their reports.

The BJP leader addressed a protest march in Mahabubnagar last night to highlight the problems of unemployed in the state.

He claimed that the response was tremendous to the march titled ‘Nirudyogula Gosa BJP Bharosa’. He said the BJP would continue to fight for justice for unemployed youth.

The BJP leader said that a person who can’t even properly conduct examinations has no right to remain in power.

This was the second major protest organised by the BJP over the issue. Last week, a protest was organised in Warangal.

The BJP is looking to cash in on the TSPSC paper leak which has affected thousands of unemployed who had appeared in various examinations for recruitment in government departments.

As the Assembly elections in the state are scheduled later this year, the BJP is going all out to target the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government on the paper leak scam.

The saffron party has already demanded the resignation of state minister for information technology and KCR’s son K. T. Rama Rao over the paper leak.

During a public meeting at Chevella on April 23, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also trained guns on BRS over paper leak.

“The future of lakhs of youth was destroyed by the KCR government. Youth will hold you accountable in coming elections,” Shah said.

Stating that there are over 2 lakh vacancies in the state, the BJP leader said the KCR government did not fill them even in two terms and was now trying to fill up 80,000 posts and even in this it leaked question papers.

Delhi HC orders social media platforms to take down leaked clips of SRK’s ‘Jawan’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: After clips of the upcoming Shah Rukh Khan-starrer movie ‘Jawan’ got leaked, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed social media platforms, ‘shady’ websites, cable TV outlets, direct-to-home services, and various other platforms to remove the leaked clips and stop their circulation as well.

Red Chillies Entertainment Private Limited, a production house owned by Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan, had filed a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court on this count.

A Delhi High Court bench headed by Justice C. Hari Shankar on Tuesday directed social media sites like YouTube, Google, Twitter, and Reddit to take action to halt the circulation of the movie’s copyrighted content and ordered a number of internet service providers to prohibit access to websites that were showing or making the movie’s footage available for viewing or downloading.

    MS Education Academy

Two movie-related video snippets, according to the petitioner, were leaked on social media, one showing Shah Rukh Khan in a fight sequence, and the second showing a dance sequence.

“It is the plaintiff’s (Red Chillies) case that these leaked video clips are nothing but clear violation of copyright/intellectual property rights of the plaintiff which are are causing damage and loss to the plaintiff. The leaked video clips together give away the look of the actors in the said film, as well as the music, both of which are typically disclosed at strategic points in time as part of the carefully-curated marketing strategy of a film,” the court was told.

The lawsuit also claimed that specific images from the film’s set, which were shot behind closed doors in a studio, had been leaked by the defendants.

An apprehension was expressed that the rogue social media handles would further copy, reproduce and distribute the copyright-protected materials and other proprietary information on various platforms, the plea said.

“The plaintiff reasonably apprehends that such publication and unauthorised circulation of the leaked video clips will jeopardise the promotion and exploitation rights of the plaintiff in the said film, and as and when the said film is released in theatres, similar acts of piracy relating to the entire film would also commence and intermediaries/websites as described would again be utilised to illegally copy, record, download, reproduce, transmit and communicate the said copyright protected work to the general public,” the plea said.
