Excise policy scam a deep-rooted conspiracy, CBI tells Delhi HC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the Delhi High Court on Wednesday that the excise policy scam it is probing is a “deep-rooted conspiracy” and that it is not as simple as depicted.

As Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma heard submissions in the bail plea filed by AAP leader and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, appearing for the CBI, said: “Yesterday (April 25), we filed the charge sheet in the case. Cognizance is yet to be taken.”

Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) D. P. Singh also appeared for the CBI.

    MS Education Academy

Raju said: “The main players being, the accused (Manish Sisodia), Vijay Nair who was closely related to the Aam Aadmi Party and was in fact occupying a Ministers Bungalow, one Kailash Gehlot’s, side by side to the CM (Arvind Kejriwal). Nair was the communication in charge of AAP, and had access to party meetings.

“Our case is that at the behest of the ‘South Group’, the 5 percent interest was increased to 12 per cent, right after a meeting that happened with the members of the South group.”

While the “South group” was residing in the Oberoi Hotel in the national capital from March 14 to 17, 2021, they had prepared a note and taken the printout from Sisodia’s computer, according to the ASG.

He added that Sisodia is capable of pressurising persons and the day the CBI arrested him, he destroyed his phone.

After hearing the matter at length, Justice Sharma said: “At the stage of bail, we cannot go into much details. Please show me evidence on which you (CBI) are relying in the present case.”

Accordingly, the court adjourned the matter and scheduled it for next hearing on April 27.

During the last hearing, Sisodia had told the High Court that the CBI has no evidence to show his involvement in the alleged Delhi excise policy case, and that he is being singled out so that he could be kept in jail.

On April 5, Sisodia had moved the high court challenging the March 31 order of CBI Judge M.K. Nagpal (Rouse Avenue Court) dismissing his bail plea.

Senior advocate Dayan Krishnan, appearing for the AAP leader, had submitted before the bench of Justice Sharma that all the other accused in the CBI case have been released on bail except Sisodia.

He had also said that the probe agency has no proof to show that the AAP leader has tampered with evidence.

“They say that I do not cooperate. This can never be the ground to deny me bail. I am not required to cooperate, confess, or answer questions in the way they want. I am required to answer in the way I want, that is the Constitutional guarantee,” Krishnan had argued.

Another counsel for Sisodia, senior advocate Mohit Mathur, had said that CBI’s figures are just on paper and no money trail has been found.

“They have made me the chief architect of this alleged conspiracy through Vijay Nair. But Vijay Nair was arrested in September 2022 and was released in November, even before the charge sheet was filed. I was only called for questioning for the second time in February 2023. So, all these allegations about me being capable of influencing the witnesses is totally wrong,” Mathur contended on behalf of Sisodia.

  • BJP-backed goons from Bihar behind Kaliyaganj violence: Mamata

BJP-backed goons from Bihar behind Kaliyaganj violence: Mamata

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged on Wednesday that the violence in Kaliyaganj in North Dinajpur district on Tuesday was triggered by BJP-backed goons who came from Bihar.

Parts of Kaliyaganj turned into a virtual battlefield on Tuesday following violent protests by the locals against the death of a 17-year-old girl in the area last week. A local police station was set on fire by the angry mob, while a couple of police vehicles were also torched by the protesters, who claimed that the girl was raped and murdered.

On April 21, the body of the 17-year-old girl was found in a canal in Kaliyaganj. Alleging that she was raped and killed, the locals had blocked roads besides setting some shops on fire. Four ASIs were suspended in connection with the minor girl’s death case, who were seen dragging the body of the teenage victim.

    MS Education Academy

Speaking to mediapersons at the state secretariat Nabanna on Wednesday, the Chief Minister admitted that some police personnel did not do the right thing by dragging the body of the victim, for which four ASIs have been suspended.

“However, the manner in which the police station was attacked and set on fire by some goons coming in from Bihar on Tuesday is unpardonable. Even the women police personnel were not spared by the attackers. I have asked the police to take strong action, arrest the culprits irrespective of their political affiliation, and confiscate their properties,” the Chief Minister said.

Holding the BJP directly responsible for the incident, Banerjee said that the only aim of the opposition party is to create violence and destabilise the law and order situation in the state.

Reacting to Banerjee’s comments, state BJP spokesman Samik Bhattacharya said that such comments from the Chief Minister are meant to hide the incompetence of the police administration.

“Whenever there is any tension in any part of the state, the Chief Minister always floats the theory of outsiders coming in from Bihar. She has no control over her own administration,” Bhattacharya said.

  • Aamir Khan all praise for PM Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat

Aamir Khan all praise for PM Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Terming “Mann Ki Baat” an example of a people’s movement, actor Aamir Khan on Wednesday said the monthly radio programme is an important piece of communication through which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has built a trusted relationship with citizens.

Khan was in the national capital to attend the ‘National Conclave on Mann Ki Baat @100’, a daylong programme inaugurated by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar with Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur as the guest of honour.

“People want to believe in him (Modi) and follow him. They trust him and he has built this relationship with the public. Trust does not come automatically, it has to be earned. And clearly he has earned it,” Khan said at a panel discussion called “Awahan Se Jan Andolan”.

    MS Education Academy

He said Modi is invested in the “Mann Ki Baat” programme at a personal level.

The 100th episode of the prime minister’s monthly radio programme is scheduled to be broadcast on April 30. Modi started the monthly radio programme after becoming prime minister in 2014.

“It’s a very important piece of communication that the leader of the country does with the people, discussing important issues, putting forward thoughts, giving suggestions, leading…

“That is how you lead by communication. You tell your people what you’re looking at, how you’re seeing the future, how you want your support in that. (It’s an) important communication that happens in ‘Mann Ki Baat’,” Khan told PTI on the sidelines of the event.

Asked if Modi only talks about his “mann ki baat” (what he wants to talk about) in the radio programme, the Bollywood star said, “I think it’s his prerogative because he’s doing it… It is his method of hearing what the people have to say connecting with people across the country. I think it’s a very important initiative.”

During the panel discussion, the 58-year-old actor said the programme is “one of the examples of a people’s movement, which has been successfully spearheaded by the prime minister”.

“… he has conducted himself with so much success that he has the support of the people. It is because he has tried to connect with people. I believe this effort is quite significant and important for any society in the world.

“It is very important for a leader to communicate and take people into confidence about what he is planning so that the people also know how they should conduct themselves. They get a vision, they get a direction to follow. And that is something which is a huge concept and is actually the start of a huge people’s movement.”

Being able to communicate and present thoughts in front of the public is a fundamental requirement from any leader, he added.

“If you’re not able to talk with your citizens who have elected you, then how will you understand them and they understand your ‘mann ki baat’ and what you’re thinking,” he said.

The prime minister, Khan said, touched on various topics, be it citizen issues or economics, in the monthly radio programme.

“When we think of an idea for the country, a whole campaign is built around it. Like the polio campaign, it was such a big campaign and it had Amitji (Amitabh Bachchan) in it… But here (‘Mann Ki Baat’), the PM just had to speak about an issue.

“There was no need for a campaign around it. He has such a big reach and plus, he is talking about it himself. He doesn’t need anyone to do it for him,” he added.

He referred to his talk show “Satyamev Jayate”, which ran for three seasons from 2012 to 2014.

“I had the same experience when I was doing ‘Satyamev Jayate’ because it was a similar kind of a programme. We were talking about issues and I was meeting people from all over the country and interacting with them. So, that was a time that I experienced it a little more which is similar to this more than my filmmaking,” he said.

In his message to listeners of “Mann Ki Baat”, Khan said he just wanted to send his love to them.

“We are all on a unique journey and we should all be connected like this,” he said.
