Later in the day, Gen Ahmed is expected to hold wide-ranging talks with Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande.

Gen Ahmed is also likely to meet Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.

Gen Pande visited Bangladesh in July last year during which both sides vowed to expand their military cooperation. It was his first trip abroad after taking the reins of the 1.2 million strong force.

‘A Waste Project’ to clean up Nerella lake in Hyderabad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A Waste Project is organising a clean-up drive on Thursday at the Nerella lake walkway, Kondapur with the help of volunteers from across the city.

The dried-up Nerella Lake, which is situated at a 10 minute walk from the Sarath City Mall, is strewn with plastic bottles, empty liquor bottles and plastic bags. Volunteers from across Hyderabad will be tidying up the space with some help from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Speaking about the initiative, Avinash told Siasat.com, “Our aim is to use social media as a tool to raise awareness and inculcate personal responsibility against littering. Of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, 22 are in India. We want to reach out to youth through social media and sensitise them about throwing garbage on roads and littering in their surroundings”.

    MS Education Academy

A Waste Project was born out of a Reddit post made by Avinash, a Hyderabad based IT professional, informing people of his intentions to clean up garbage and asking them to join him.

He was joined by 2 more IT professionals, Nooman and Arjun, and a student, Eashwar. The four of them together organised upto 9 clean-up drives in the city. It has quickly turned into a volunteer backed organised effort to clean up public spaces in the city.

A Waste Project is inviting citizens to share images of litter and garbage in their surroundings on their social media platforms to organise the clean-up drives and also to join them at the Nerella Lake walkway clean up on Thursday.

The team provides gloves, masks and garbage collection bags to all the volunteers to keep them safe. Post the clean-up the before and after pictures are posted on social media to encourage netizens to keep their surroundings clean.

In the past, A Waste Project organised various clean up drives at Madhapur 100ft road, BHEL stadium, Malkam cheruvu, Raidurgam and Lanco hills lake, Manikonda.

Though the cleaned spaces may be littered again, the team believes that the change created in the mindset of people would eventually bring about a lifestyle change.

The clean up drive at the Nerella Lake will begin at 7 AM and will go on for three hours.

  • Chinese President Xi speaks to Ukrainian counterpart

Chinese President Xi speaks to Ukrainian counterpart

    [ad_1]

Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping in his first phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday offered to mediate to bring about a ceasefire and political settlement to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying Kyiv must “seize the opportunity” as he warned that there are no winners in a nuclear war.

Xi, who toyed with the idea of mediating to end the over-year-long conflict after his last month’s highly publicised visit to Moscow during which he referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as “dear friend”, told Zelenskyy that “dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way forward” and offered to send a special envoy to negotiate a ceasefire.

“There is no winner in a nuclear war. On the nuclear issue, all relevant parties must stay calm and exercise restraint, truly act in the interests of their own future and that of humanity, and jointly manage the crisis,” he said, apparently cautioning against a prolonged conflict.

    MS Education Academy

“With rational thinking and voices now on the rise, it is important to seize the opportunity and build up favourable conditions for the political settlement of the crisis,” Xi said.

This is the first contact between Xi and Zelenskyy since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February last year.

Xi is trying to enlarge China’s diplomatic outreach after Beijing successfully negotiated a peace deal between arch-rivals in the Middle East – Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Avoiding any direct reference to Russia, Xi told Zelenskyy that “it is hoped that all parties would seriously reflect on the Ukraine crisis and jointly explore ways to bring lasting peace and security to Europe through dialogue”.

“China will continue to facilitate talks for peace and make its efforts for an early ceasefire and restoration of peace. China will send the Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs to Ukraine and other countries to have in-depth communication with all parties on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis,” an official statement here quoted Xi as saying.

The official statement made no mention of Russia. China has not condemned Russia after it started the war against Ukraine over disputed territories but did not recognise Moscow’s claims but firmed up political, trade and military ties.

In his careful reaction, Zelenskyy tweeted saying that he “had a long and meaningful phone call with President Xi Jinping. I believe that this call, as well as the appointment of Ukraine’s ambassador to China, will give a powerful impetus to the development of our bilateral relations”.

Putin has already welcomed China’s mediation.

Observers say that Zelenskyy, who is closely coordinating with the US and EU and received abundant support in Ukraine’s fight against Russia, has little room to accept a settlement without Russia forgoing its claims over the areas claimed by both countries.

Ahead of Xi’s visit to Russia, China released a 12-point paper calling for a ceasefire followed by peace talks to end the Ukraine war. It, however, struck a nuanced stand of respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty and legitimate security concerns of Moscow and expressed its firm opposition to the use of nuclear weapons.

Significant points of China’s stand in its position paper were a call for ceasing hostilities and global support for the resumption of direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the war, respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and Moscow’s legitimate security concerns and Beijing’s opposition to threat or use of nuclear and biological weapons.

In his meeting with Xi, Putin said Chinese proposals could be used as the basis of a peace settlement in Ukraine, but that the Western countries and Kyiv were not yet ready.

In a joint statement, both Xi and Putin cautioned against any steps that might push the Ukraine conflict into an “uncontrollable phase,” adding that there could be no winners in a nuclear war.

Xi commended Zelenskyy for stating, on multiple occasions, the importance he attaches to developing the bilateral relationship and advancing cooperation with China.

“Mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is the political foundation of China-Ukraine relations. The two sides need to look to the future, view and handle the bilateral relations from a long-term perspective, carry forward the tradition of mutual respect and sincerity, and take the China-Ukraine strategic partnership forward,” he said.

“China’s readiness to develop relations with Ukraine is consistent and clear-cut. No matter how the international situation evolves, China will work with Ukraine to advance mutually beneficial cooperation,” Xi said.

  • U.S. planning to send a consular team to Sudan to assist fleeing Americans

U.S. planning to send a consular team to Sudan to assist fleeing Americans

    [ad_1]

    sudan evacuations 81969

The Biden administration has repeatedly vowed it would not organize a large-scale evacuation operation like in Kabul. But President Joe Biden’s team has authorized the use of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets to assure the safety of evacuating convoys and placed assets in the region for contingencies.

Vedant Patel, a State Department spokesperson, did not confirm the fly away team planning. There has been “no current change in our posture when it comes to our personnel in Sudan,” he said.

The State Department has asked the military for logistical support to move the fly away team, which is currently in Djibouti working to complete the necessary paperwork, to the Port of Sudan, according to a Defense Department official. Another person, a former U.S. official, said the fly away team was assembled and making the necessary preparations for the Port of Sudan deployment. Both were granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive operation.

The Pentagon is looking at options to move the team by ship or by air, the DoD official said. This could include making the 800-mile trip on MV-22 Ospreys stationed in Djibouti, or traveling on one of the nearby U.S. Navy ships.

The U.S. government is currently looking at “what’s the fastest, safest way” to get the consular team to the port, the official said. At the moment, the military “has not been tasked to do anything other than position ships in case they are needed.”

One option to move the team by sea is the destroyer USS Truxtun, which is already on standby off the Port of Sudan. A number of other ships are en route to the region, including the expeditionary sea base USS Lewis B. Puller, which can act as a floating base or transfer station, and the expeditionary fast transport USNS Brunswick, operated by the Military Sealift Command and designed to rapidly move troops or equipment, according to the DoD official.

There is also an additional supply ship en route to sustain the ships in the region, the DoD official said.

The news that the U.S. is planning to send a consular team to Sudan comes days after a U.S. special forces team conducted a daring mission into the country to evacuate U.S. embassy personnel from Khartoum. About 100 troops made the trip from Djibouti to the capital in three MH-47 twin-rotor transport aircraft, a heavily armed version of the CH-47 Chinook piloted by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment known as the “Night Stalkers.”

  • Vivekananda Reddy not murdered over property, says Sharmila

Vivekananda Reddy not murdered over property, says Sharmila

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) leader Y.S. Sharmila said on Wednesday that her uncle Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy was not murdered for his property as he had already bequeathed his entire property to his daughter Suneetha.

Sharmila told reporters here that Vivekananda Reddy’s property was in the name of his daughter for a long time.

Her remarks assumed significance in view of the allegations by some of the accused in the case and the alleged second wife of Vivekananda Reddy that he was killed as he wanted to give his property to his son from the second wife.

    MS Education Academy

Sharmila, sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, also said that if Suneetha’s husband Rajasekhar Reddy wanted property he would have killed Suneetha and not Vivekananda Reddy as all the assets were already in her name.

She also found fault with the allegations being made against the slain former minister and former MP. “Vivekananda Reddy was a people’s man. People of Pulivendula and Kadapa district know him. He lived a simple life,” she said.

She said it was unfortunate that some media houses were indulging in character assassination by airing baseless stories about his personal life. “Nobody has a right to speak about the personal life of my uncle,” she said.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was murdered in his house in Pulivendula on March 15, 2019, few weeks before the elections.

The CBI, which is probing the case, recently arrested Vivekananda Reddy’s cousin Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy and grilled the latter’s son and Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy. The agency suspects that they hatched a conspiracy to kill Vivekananda Reddy as he was not in favour of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) fielding Avinash Reddy as the candidate from Kadapa Lok Sabha seat.

Vivekananda Reddy reportedly wanted Jagan Mohan Reddy to field the latter’s sister Sharmila or mother Y.S. Vijayamma as the party candidate.

Avinash Reddy, who has approached the Telangana High Court for anticipatory bail, alleged that the CBI was trying to implicate them in the case. He claimed that the CBI ignored key facts in the case, including that Vivekananda Reddy’s family members were unhappy with him for marrying another woman. He also claimed that Vivekananda Reddy wanted to give his property to his second wife and son.

  • Congress cools on post-SVB banking overhaul

Congress cools on post-SVB banking overhaul

    [ad_1]

    20230109 steering 3 francis 22

It’s a void that’s left lawmakers all over the place, with at least one key leader — House Financial Services Chair Patrick McHenry — signaling that he’s wary about making changes to the cap.

“We’ve gone from the overreaction to a period of time where we’re thinking it through,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said in an interview.

The fading urgency around expanding government deposit insurance — one of the first potential policy prescriptions that emerged from the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank — is evidence that Congress may let the latest episode of banking turmoil pass without revamping rules for the industry.

“There’s not been consensus,” Senate Banking Chair Sherrod Brown said in an interview.

Lawmakers turned to the issue immediately after SVB’s collapse, which was precipitated by a $42 billion run by depositors. SVB, which catered to tech startups and investors, at the end of last year reported that 88 percent of its deposits were uninsured, with Signature Bank — which failed shortly afterward — reporting that 90 percent of its deposits were above the limit.

The Treasury Department and financial regulators responded to the meltdown by backstopping all depositors at SVB and Signature. With fears of a broader bank run looming, a coalition of mid-size lenders urged the government to temporarily guarantee deposits at all banks — a step that administration and agency officials declined to take. The turmoil appeared to encourage some depositors to move their money from regional lenders to the largest banks.

Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have since floated competing ideas about temporary and permanent expansions of deposit insurance. The limit hasn’t been raised since the 2008 financial crisis, which also triggered a sweeping overhaul of bank regulations.

Deposit insurance policy “is not one that has simply divided Republicans versus Democrats,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said in an interview.

Warren has floated a potential expansion of coverage, in particular for payroll accounts, but is against an unlimited backstop. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said he’s working with Republicans on a bill that would temporarily insure all deposits used for payroll, regardless of size.

Warren argues Congress should step in now that bank customers may expect the government to guarantee their uninsured deposits in future bank failures.

“Every depositor now anticipates that they will also be covered even for deposits greater than $250,000,” she said. “That means we need to confront that directly in Congress and authorize the FDIC both to increase the insured level and to make sure those who are taking advantage of it pay for that insurance.”

Republicans appear to be split on the issue.

Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.) was one of the first lawmakers to call for a temporary universal guarantee to fend off runs — an idea that the House Freedom Caucus has since come out against. Luetkemeyer said in an interview that he is mulling a bill that would give the FDIC “up to 60 days to be able to guarantee deposits all the way across the board.”

Other Republicans, like Reps. Ann Wagner of Missouri and Warren Davidson of Ohio, have suggested instead finding ways to incorporate more private-sector options into the banking safety net, including through tax credits.

But McHenry, whose committee would be responsible for crafting an expansion of deposit insurance on the House side, has shown no indication that he’s embracing it and downplayed the prospects for post-SVB legislation.

In a late March appearance at an American Bankers Association conference, McHenry said lawmakers needed to better understand the trade-offs involved when it comes to moral hazard and bank consolidation before acting.

Another key Republican, FDIC Vice Chair Travis Hill, warned earlier this month that raising the cap could lead to more regulations on lenders.

“People should think about how these things actually work in the real world as they think about potential reforms,” he said.

Now, conservatives and progressive advocates are arguing that policymakers are best off steering clear of the issue. A separate, bipartisan push to restrict bank executive compensation and increase penalties for failures — a policy sought by President Joe Biden — is also on the table.

“Lawmakers should focus their attention elsewhere,” said Alex Thornton, senior director of financial regulation at the Center for American Progress. “It’s a complicated discussion, and it’s not a discussion policymakers should be focusing on right now, because it’s not going to address the root problem.”
