BJP, RSS have ‘dangerous intention’ of bringing one-party rule to country: Gehlot

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday said the BJP and the RSS have the “dangerous intention” of bringing one-party rule to the country, and cited Russia and China as examples.

Addressing farmers at a Kisan Sabha in Bikaner’s Jasrasar, he said BJP leaders keep talking about a “Congress-free” India.

“What is the meaning of BJP leaders talking about Congress-free India. What it means — a one-party rule. It is very dangerous intention of the RSS as well of the BJP. If the country does not understand this in time the coming generations will suffer and elections will be held like in Russia and China,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

Under the one-party rule, elections will be fake and only one party will come to power again and again, he said.

It will also mean an end to the practice of politicians going to the poorest of the poor, to the Dalits, farmers and elders to seek their votes to become MLAs, MPs and Sarpanches, the Congress leader said.

China is a one-party system. Russia is not, but one party now dominates its parliament.

Gehlot said the agenda of the central government is taking a “dangerous turn” and the country needs to understand that.

The meeting was also addressed by AICC in-charge for Rajasthan Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, PCC president Govind Singh Dotasra, former leader of opposition Rameshwar Dudi and others.

Gehlot said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should break his silence over the issues related to the Adani group being raised by the Congress party.

He said PM Modi should also clarify his relationship with industrialist Gautam Adani.

Earlier, Gehlot inspected a ‘Mahangai Rahat Shivir’ being run by his government and interacted with the beneficiaries of various schemes of the state government.

Dubai ruler announces new moon mission called ‘Rashid Rover 2’

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced on Wednesday the second attempt to land on the moon, the rover would be called Rashid 2.

This came after the Japan’s Hakuto-R Mission 1 spacecraft, carrying the Rashid Rover, got lost moments before it landed on the moon on Tuesday.

“The mission of the vehicle carrying the explorer Rashid did not succeed in landing on the surface of the moon… but we succeeded in raising the ceiling of our ambitions to reach the moon… and we succeeded in making a team of our young men and women capable of managing advanced space projects… and we succeeded in building a space sector from zero within 10 years,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted on Wednesday.

    MS Education Academy

Sheikh Mohammed continued, “Today, explorer Rashid 1 is on the surface of the moon, carrying the flag of the Emirates… to constitute the greatest evidence of our courage… and our thinking outside the box… and our attempt to reach the moon… From today, work will begin on Rashid 2… a new explorer… for a new attempt to reach for the moon.”

Sheikh Mohammed added, “We are a country founded on ambition. We are a country that has not stopped since December 2, 1971. It will not stop. It will not turn around. It will not set small goals for itself. The coming is more beautiful, greater and bolder, God willing.”

Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, tweeted, “The biggest risk is not to take risks,” says the one whose name bears the space center, ‘Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid.’ The nature of the space sector is a high risk rate, and we accept that.”

Sheikh Hamdan also said, “We have had the honor of trying to reach a new point in the history of the UAE… and we have had the honor of raising our ambitions so that space, its planets and stars will be its ceiling.

“And we directed Mohammed bin Rashid to start immediately developing Rashid 2… a new vehicle… for a new attempt to reach the moon, God willing.”

Both rovers are named after the late Sheikh Rashid, founder of modern Dubai and father of Sheikh Mohammed.

The Rashid 1 mission was the first under the UAE’s local lunar exploration program, which took a team of 11 engineers at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center six years. No date has been set for the second attempt.

  • ‘Weaponizing its power’: Disney accuses DeSantis of retaliation in federal lawsuit

‘Weaponizing its power’: Disney accuses DeSantis of retaliation in federal lawsuit

    [ad_1]

“Disney now is forced to defend itself against a State weaponizing its power to inflict political punishment,” the lawsuit states.

The two opposing moves Wednesday represent an escalation in the ongoing battle between the Florida governor and Disney. The fight was sparked last year after Disney publicly criticized Florida’s Republican-controlled Legislature for approving a bill banning teachers from leading classroom lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation, known by opponents as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

DeSantis, who supported the legislation and signed it into law, later pushed Florida lawmakers to strip Disney of its self-governing status that the company enjoyed for decades at its central Florida theme parks. Disney remains one of Florida’s biggest employers, with more than 70,000 employees at its theme parks near Orlando.

The governor also previously appointed a new board to oversee Disney’s Florida district. But in a surprise move last February, the Central Florida board that had been controlled by Disney quietly approved a pact that gave Disney authority over its parks. The DeSantis administration only learned about the agreement in March and scrambled to respond.

Some Republicans criticized DeSantis over the Disney flap, claiming that the governor — who is expected to jump into the 2024 presidential race — was outmaneuvered by the corporation. Former President Donald Trump, who already announced his presidential bid and is known for fighting with rivals, called DeSantis’ feud with Disney a “political stunt” and lamented that the entire episode is unnecessary.

On Wednesday, the DeSantis-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board of Supervisors, during a meeting in Lake Buena Vista, voted to invalidate the February pact in an attempt to wrestle back control of Disney. But that move may be on hold as the lawsuit winds its way through the courts.

Former Florida Supreme Court Justice Alan Lawson, an attorney hired by the district, said that the old board attempted to act without the legal authority to act.

“Everyone must play by the same rules,” Lawson said. “Disney was openly and legally granted unique and special privilege, that privilege of running its own local government for a time. That era has ended.”

Jeremy T. Redfern, deputy press secretary for DeSantis, responded to questions in an email stating: “We are unaware of any legal right that a company has to operate its own government or maintain special privileges not held by other businesses in the state. This lawsuit is yet another unfortunate example of their hope to undermine the will of the Florida voters and operate outside the bounds of the law.”

Representatives of Disney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In its lawsuit, Disney stated that it regretted that the ongoing fight has led to a federal lawsuit.

“Governor DeSantis and his allies paid no mind to the governing structure that facilitated Reedy Creek’s successful development until one year ago, when the Governor decided to target Disney,” the lawsuit states. “There is no room for disagreement about what happened here: Disney expressed its opinion on state legislation and was then punished by the State for doing so.”

The lawsuit repeatedly claims that DeSantis targeted Disney and is punishing the company for speaking out against the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. It adds that DeSantis and the new board are violating Disney’s constitutional and the First Amendment rights, adding that once the “political story” was set, the retaliation only became worse, the lawsuit read.

“Indeed, Governor DeSantis has reaffirmed, again and again, that the State campaign to punish Disney for its speech about House Bill 1557 has been a coordinated and deliberate one from the start,” according to the lawsuit. “Disney’s commentary on House Bill 1557 was, he claimed, a ‘declaration of war’ and ‘a textbook example of when a corporation should stay out of politics.’”

  • Senate still not a savior in debt crisis

Senate still not a savior in debt crisis

    [ad_1]

Tillis and his 48 Senate GOP colleagues are nonetheless praying that Speaker Kevin McCarthy can muscle through his opening pitch to give their party a modicum of leverage over the coming weeks. A McCarthy failure would make it much harder for 10 or more Republican senators to extract any concessions at all from the president as a condition for raising the borrowing limit.

Yet basically every Senate Democrat, save West Virginia centrist Joe Manchin, says there’s no negotiation to be had no matter what transpires in the lower chamber this week. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer declared the House’s proposal the “DOA Act” for its grim prospects of becoming law and reiterated that he would only accept a “clean” debt ceiling hike.

The yawning gap between the parties in the Senate highlights the high degree of uncertainty over just how Congress and the White House are going to get out of this particular jam. It’s undoubtedly the most consequential topic of 2023 and perhaps the entire two-year session, with massive economic and political stakes for both parties heading into a presidential election year.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) pointedly argued that the House’s GOP’s eleventh-hour horse-trading alone invalidates their negotiating position: “This very public display of dysfunction is a clear indication of how disastrous a negotiation would be. I mean, these guys can’t negotiate amongst themselves.”

Murphy advised House Republicans to pick a fiscal austerity fight, if they want one, during talks over funding the government in the fall: “They’ll lose that fight with the American public, but at least it’ll do a lot less damage,” he said. “My sense is a lot of Senate Republicans think the House strategy is super dumb and politically toxic.”

A growing number of House Democrats want Biden and McCarthy to sit down and negotiate, but that will likely depend on what can pass the House this week. On the other side of the aisle, moderate Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) advised Biden to “take a good look at” what the speaker can pass, then start haggling.

Whenever that phase starts — if it does at all — all eyes will be on the Senate and its track record of getting Washington out of jams with bipartisan solutions. Yet right now there’s very little cooking in the chamber’s dealmaking kitchen.

“We should be able to sit down and talk like grown-ups,” said Manchin, who has met with McCarthy and faces a difficult reelection campaign. “Everybody should be involved.”

The current standoff is inextricably linked to the precedent its resolution might set for the next debt limit fight. Republicans think they can’t fold on this debt crisis without inciting a rebellion by their base, while Democrats believe opening the door to negotiation creates an endless loop of face-offs with the GOP.

Senate GOP leaders bent twice in 2021 to avoid a debt limit breach, and Democrats envision that ultimately that will happen once again. But the Republican-controlled House’s actions thus far have made even that result hard to imagine, as McCarthy digs in on a matter that could determine the future of his speakership.

This explains why Senate Republican leaders are continuing to squash any possibility that Minority Leader Mitch McConnell might be ready to step in and cut a deal amid the staring contest between McCarthy and Biden, who have not met on the topic in nearly three months.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) said her party is “gonna continue to support what the House has done,” adding that Schumer might step in after the House votes “but I think it’s still going to be McCarthy and Biden” agreeing on a debt solution.

While Republicans worry about allowing another clean debt ceiling increase and sparking another internal fight, Democrats fear a damaging redux of 2011 — when the tea party-influenced House GOP played hardball with then-President Barack Obama and Vice President Biden. The two parties eventually cut a deal to extend the debt ceiling which culminated in significant spending caps.

In retrospect, Democrats view that episode as a mistake that cannot be repeated. Rather than entertaining dealmaking with McCarthy, centrist Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) said simply: “The solution is to not default on the debt.” Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) was just as succinct: “I don’t think there’ll be negotiations on a budget.”

“It’s difficult to understand what the House is going to do. They can’t pass a signable bill unless they bring Democrats into the process. So I think on our side, we’ll try to work with Republicans to see what we can do,” Cardin said, adding that McConnell “understands the seriousness of this.”

McConnell, however, once again aligned with McCarthy this week and suggested Biden join the speaker at “the grown-ups table.” The Senate GOP leader has taken great pains to show little daylight with the California Republican after a number of splits last year raised questions about how the two men would govern their party together.

So despite Democrats’ hopes, there’s little sign McConnell or his lieutenants are ready to lift a finger at this point.

The House bill “forces the administration to come to the table,” Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) said. “The pressure really ought to be on the White House.”

Maha: Court grants bail to 111 people held during protest against refinery

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A court in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri has granted bail to 111 people, most of them women, who were arrested for holding an agitation against a proposed oil refinery at Barsu village in the coastal district.

More than 100 women were among the protesters who tried to block a road in Barsu and Solgaon areas of Ratnagiri, around 400km from Mumbai, on Tuesday by lying on the ground to stop government vehicles from entering the proposed site of the refinery.

“The Ratnagiri police arrested the 111 protesters. After their arrest, they were produced in a court later that evening, which then granted bail to them,” an official said.

    MS Education Academy

Since a large number of police personnel were deployed in the area on Wednesday, peace prevailed in the area and no agitation was held during the day, he said.

The protesters were booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to unlawful assembly, rioting, disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant, wrongful restraint and relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act, he added.

Local residents fear that the mega project will adversely affect the fragile biodiversity of the coastal Konkan region and also hit their livelihood. The opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) came out in their support and demanded an immediate end to “atrocities” against protesters.

World is recognising capabilities and contributions of ‘New India’, EAM Jaishankar

    [ad_1]

Bogota: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that the world is recognising the capabilities and contributions of a ‘New India’ as he underscored that there is a feeling that today’s India has the ability to bridge the difficult issues.

During an interaction with the Indian community members in Bogota on Tuesday, Jaishankar also said that the world today is acknowledging the changes in India and getting more ready for India.

Jaishankar also shared with the community members India’s transformation into ‘New India’ and its global implications. “Underlined how the world is recognising the capabilities and contributions of a New India,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

Citing the Ukraine conflict or problems which deal with the developed world and the developing world, he told the Indian diaspora that “in all of this from all quarters, there is today that feeling that India is a country which in some way or the other can serve as a bridge as a someone who brings differing opinions together (and) helps to find a solution”.

“In the last decade, we have built up a reputation as what we call a first responder. When something happens we are quick to move because we’ve developed our own capability within the country. And now we feel we are good enough, experienced enough and responsible enough to do that outside…” he said, citing the example of the recent earthquake in Turkey where India sent its disaster rescue team within 24 hours.

Noting that there are some issues which trouble all countries in the world, the minister said that climate is one and here too there’s been a big change in India’s positioning, in India’s image.

“We are seeing today as a climate leader, a country which has done a lot on solar energy, on renewables, which is actually coming up with a whole series of ideas and practices and institutions,” he said.

He added that today a much more united global position on terrorism is at least partly due to the efforts that India has made in the last 10 years. “There is a feeling that today’s India has the ability to bridge the difficult issues. And frankly, sometimes the difficult arguments of the day,” he added.

He said that there is a much greater inclination on the part of the world to make an effort to understand India, that an India which is stronger, more powerful, more impactful. “There is a much greater willingness on the part of the world to make an effort to understand us and what we are,” he said.

Jaishankar also talked about the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for the welfare of Indians abroad.

He lauded the Indian diaspora’s contributions, saying the image of India in foreign countries is significantly shaped by the community. “In this era of globalisation, of technology, of mobility, Indians are making their presence felt everywhere,” he added.

While responding to a question on dual citizenship, Jaishankar said that the issue involves security implications and not many big countries allow it.

During his stay in Colombia, Jaishankar would meet several top leaders of the country and review bilateral ties with his Colombian counterpart Alvaro Leyva Duran.

Jaishankar is on a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic, his first visit as the external affairs minister to these Latin American countries and the Caribbean.

Kochi Water Metro commences commercial operations; over 6,500 people ride on first day

    [ad_1]

Kochi: The Kerala government’s ambitious Kochi Water Metro service, a first in the country and launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a day ago, commenced its commercial operations on Wednesday on a single route which witnessed an “overwhelming” response with a ridership of over 6,500.

On the first day of its commercial operations, Kochi Water Metro ran boats between the Kerala High Court and Vypin terminals from 7 AM onwards and saw a ridership of 6,559 passengers, Kochi Water Metro Ltd (KWML) said in a statement.

KWML said the public response on the first day was “overwhelming”.

    MS Education Academy

“Boats were operated every 15 minutes from 7 AM to 8 PM in the High Court -Vypin route from both the terminals,” it said.

On Thursday, commercial operations would commence on the second route from Vytilla to Kakkanad.

“It is expected that this route will be beneficial to the people of Kakkanad and for those working in Infopark. In the initial days, the Kochi Water Metro would be operating in this route during peak hours.

“The boats will operate from 8 AM to 11 AM and from 4 PM to 7 PM. There will be 3 trips each in the morning and evening hours. The ticket rate for this route would be Rs 30,” KWLML said in the statement.

The estimated travel time from Vyttila water metro terminal to Kakkanad terminal is around 25 minutes and to ensure last mile connectivity, feeder buses and autos have been arranged from Kakkanad Water Metro Terminal to Infopark.

The flagship water metro project of the Left front government, set up at a cost of Rs 1,136.83 crore in the port city, will connect 10 islands using 78 electric boats and 38 terminals, once fully operational.

Initially, 15 electric air-conditioned catamaran boats will ferry city residents across eight water routes. There are 15 proposed water routes.

A group of differently-abled children enjoyed the inaugural trip of the water metro on the first day. The vessels and the terminals are disabled-friendly.

The ticket rate for the High Court-Vypin route is Rs 20.

During peak hours, there will be boat service every 15 minutes on this route and services will continue till 8 PM, the KWML statement said.

It said the country’s first Water Metro service will provide safe, affordable and pocket-friendly travel for people in and around Kochi and also the tourists from across the world.

The eco-friendly vessels can ferry up to 100 people each across the proposed 76-km-long routes at a speed of eight to ten knots.

The boat had also won Gussies International Electric Boat awards, 2022.

Metro officials said the vessels are fitted with the most advanced and safest battery technology, which is capable of supercharging in 15 to 20 minutes.

The vessels are also equipped with life-saving equipment and technology to prevent overcrowding.

Apart from having an automatic boat location tracking system and a night navigation equipment, the panoramic windows of the vessels provide a visual treat of the scenic backwaters of Kochi.

The solar-powered electric vessels with zero emissions have recyclable aluminum alloy hull bodies and the engines produce near to zero sound and vibration while running.

The Kochi Water Metro service is fully funded by the Kerala government and KfW, a German funding agency.

The terminals are built with state-of-the-art facilities and the jetties have floating pontoons with automatic docking system technology. The Water Metro is expected to ferry 34,000 passengers everyday when fully operational.

The integrated ticketing system allows passengers seamless travel on water metro and metro rail using the Kochi One card.

For the future, KMRL plans to make the smart card usable for travel on feeder buses and auto-rickshaws.

HC directs UP govt to amend rules to fill Class-III vacancies via UPSSSC

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court has directed the state government to ensure the selection of Class-lll posts in the legislative assembly and the legislative council is made through the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC).

The court’s Lucknow bench also asked the government to amend in rules within three months for this.

Justice DK Singh passed the order recently while dismissing a writ petition by Sushil Kumar and others. The bench said the petitioners, who were appointed on contractual basis, should be allowed to work and be paid remuneration accordingly till regular selected candidates join through UPSSSC.

    MS Education Academy

The petitioners had challenged the selection of candidates in the legislative council in accordance with the advertisement issued in September 2020 for 99 posts of 11 cadres. They had alleged nepotism and favouritism in the selection process.

Opposing their plea, the respondents’ counsel Gaurav Mehrotra argued that the court had dismissed a similar petition earlier and the petitioners were not able to establish any fault in the selection process.

Mehrotra also said the petition was not maintainable on their behalf as they are unsuccessful candidates.

Dismissing the petition, the bench observed, “It is required to note that appointments for a post in a public body must be fair and reasonable. Fairness and reasonableness must be ensured in entire process of selection.”

“In view to maintain the public confidence in the recruitment process in the legislative assembly and legislative council in respect of Class-III posts, the recruitment should be in the hands of the specialised statutory recruitment body and not in the hands of a selection committee or a private agency,” the bench said.
