Petition accusing Amit Shah of spreading communal tension filed

Darbhanga: A Congress leader in Bihar on Tuesday filed a petition before a court accusing Union Home Minister Amit Shah of spreading communal tensions and tarnishing the party’s reputation.
The petition was filed before Chief Judicial Magistrate, Darbhanga, by Pratibha Singh, who is the Congress’ in charge of Hayaghat assembly seat.
The petitioner has assailed an election speech of Shah, delivered on April 25 in Karnataka where assembly polls will be held on May 10.

The petitioner has taken exception to Shah’s statement that the state will be “afflicted with riots” if the Congress, shown as having the upper hand in poll surveys, formed the next government in Karnataka, which is currently ruled by the BJP.
The petitioner has contended that the statement has cast aspersions on the Congress and triggered communal tension.
The court has fixed May 4 as the next date of hearing in the matter.

Mamata Banerjee calls for unity of all anti-BJP forces ahead of Lok Sabha polls

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday gave a call to all non-BJP forces in the country to unite in order to bring about a change in the central regime in the Lok Sabha polls scheduled next year.
On competition of the second year of her third term as Chief Minister, Banerjee released a video message in which she said that there is an urgent necessity for unity of all opposition forces in order to make the 2024 polls an “election for change”.
“The next Lok Sabha polls will be for change. If all the opposition parties unite, the defeat of BJP will be inevitable. The country needs a change. Let the 2024 polls bring that change,” she said in the video message.

However, she did not make it clear whether Congress features in the blueprint of Trinamool Congress’ united opposition alliance.
In the video message, she also launched a scathing attack against the Centre on the twin issues of demonetisation and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
“Does such a government deserve any further support? No power is absolute and bigger than the common people who will have the final word. This time we will not lose. We will win,” the Chief Minister said.
However, both the Congress and the CPI(M) ridiculed Banerjee over her call for unity of opposition forces against BJP for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

According to state Congress President and veteran Lok Sabha member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, such comments are meaningless especially when Trinamool was responsible for consolidating the strength of the BJP in West Bengal.

“I doubt whether Trinamool Congress at all enjoys any credibility in national politics. It has already lost its national party status. Probably, the Chief Minister has realised that she will lose her grip in West Bengal in the coming days and hence she is calling for opposition unity now,” Chowdhury said.
CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty almost echoed Chowdhury’s views when he said that such call for opposition unity does not suit the Chief Minister after she indirectly helped the BJP in the polls to elect the Vice President of India as well in the Assembly polls in Goa and Meghalaya.
“Trinamool Congress lacks credibility,” he said.

Saudi Arabia extends deadline for Makkah Haj housing

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Haj Pilgrims Housing Committee in Makkah has extended the deadline for issuing housing permits until May 20.
The committee said that the relevant requests will continue until the end of the current month of Shawwal, which is expected to end on May 20.
The committee urged real estate owners interested in renting their homes for this purpose to review approved engineering offices to finalize the permits, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Applications are submitted by engineering offices accredited by Makkah Municipality and Civil Defence, who will examine those buildings to ensure they meet the required safety and health conditions.
As part of this process, the committee asked the owners who are interested in renting out their houses to accommodate pilgrims to comply with all safety requirements and apply for permits as soon as possible.
In December 2022, the committee began receiving applications for permits for buildings to be approved to house pilgrims for the upcoming Haj season and has since extended the deadline several times.
Haj pilgrimage to Makkah is a mandatory religious duty that must be performed by those Muslims who are physically and financially able to perform it at least once in a lifetime.

Saudi Arabia has announced that the minimum age for this year’s Haj is 12-year-old as the number of pilgrims returns to pre-pandemic levels.

Hyderabad: 3 IPS officers promoted to IGP rank

Hyderabad: The state government promoted three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers of the 2005 batch of Telangana cadre to the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Tuesday.
In a government press release, Avinash Mohanty as Additional Commissioner of Police (Addl. CP) Cyberabad, P Vishwa Prasad as Additional Commissioner of Police (Addl. CP) Hyderabad and M Ramesh as IGP Provisioning and Logistics, Hyderabad have retained their existing posts.
The announcement was made by Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari.

Chess tournament for the blind underway at Hyderabad’s Denvar School

Hyderabad: Devnar School for the Blind is turning heads by organising a five-day ‘chess tournament’ for visually impaired students for the tenth year in a row.
Supported by VST Industries in Association with the All India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB), the astonishing tournament had a well-organised sitting arrangement where the blind people were seen quietly indulging in the game while they played against each other and also with normal people.
Denvar School is situated at Mayur Marg in Begumpet, catering to nearly 400 students, making it one of the biggest schools for the blind in India.

The tournament that began on April 30 saw the participation of more than 200 players, coming from Maharashtra, Delhi, Chandigarh, etc and will continue till May 4.
Deputy chief arbiter, Praveen P while speaking to The Siasat Daily said that this is the 10th edition of the tournament and this year it has received a huge response after it was held back for two years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Treasurer of the AICFB, Swapnil Shah said that the competition is one of the biggest and one of its kind in the world to have been conducted exclusively in the country for blind players so far since it saw the participation of players hailing from 18 Indian states.
Expressing gratitude to the Denvar school for organising the event, Shah said, “The number of student participants each year has increased and every year, the federation carries out five to six such tournaments under various categories to get the rating for the blind players.”

AICFB, vice president, Bhagatkar, who is a national chess champion himself, and the first to have won a bronze medal for India in the blind category, said that the visually impaired obtained a boost to play in the well-organised time-tabled atmosphere with food and stay facilities in place for the players.

To add to the spirit of the championship, a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh will be distributed among the top ten players under various categories along with trophies.
A visually impaired player, Prasad from Andhra Pradesh said that he has been playing the game for seven years now and managed to win three out of the five rounds on day 3 of the tournament.

Cop among 2 killed as police vehicle overturns in Telangana

Hyderabad: Two persons including a sub-inspector of police were killed in a road accident in Telangana’s Mulugu district on Tuesday.
A police vehicle overturned near Jeedivagu in Eturnagaram mandal, killing the SI and the driver.
Eturanagaram SI Indraiah and private driver Raju were killed in the accident. A constable, Srinivas, escaped with minor injuries.

The police jeep was on its way to Mangampeta. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and, as a result, it turned turtle. Both the SI and driver died on the spot.
The injured driver was admitted to a hospital. Police shifted the bodies of the deceased to Mulugu for autopsy.

Imran claims third assassination attempt hatched against him

Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan informed the Lahore High Court on Tuesday that a “third assassination attempt” has been hatched against him, as per media reports.
During the proceedings, the PTI chief took to the rostrum and informed the court that he had earlier revealed that there will be an assassination attempt on him and everyone saw what happened in Wazirabad, The Express Tribune reported.
He claimed that a second attack was to be carried out against him in the Islamabad judicial complex, but luckily he remained safe.

He brought to the notice of the court that a fresh assassination plan has been hatched against him.
Khan claimed that while he wanted to appear before the courts, he was not provided adequate security nor was he allowed to appear by police officials – referring to the riots outside Islamabad’s Judicial Complex during an earlier court appearance, The Express Tribune reported.
He alsoc alleged that a top intelligence officer was “behind the whole game”, the report said.
Khan had filed a plea seeking direction to the quarters concerned to declare that the “unprecedented, repeated abuse and misuse of criminal law machinery of the state” to register criminal cases against him amounts to a violation of Section 154 of the CrPC 1898, “causing grave unlawful and illegal violation of the petitioner’s fundamental rights under several articles of the Constitution of Pakistan”.

The former premier appeared before the high court’s larger bench headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi. The court directed Khan to join the investigation in the cases registered against him after deliberating with concerned quarters to decide whether he would appear before the investigating team or if the team would visit his Zaman Park residence.

The high court also rejected Khan’s plea for interim relief and refused to restrain the authorities from registering new FIRs against him, The Express Tribune reported.

Telangana Secretariat conferred with Indian Green Building Council Award

Hyderabad: The freshly launched Telangana Secretariat complex has been conferred with the prestigious Indian Green Building Council Award.
The members of the IGBC called on roads and buildings minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy at the Secretariat on Monday and presented the award to him.
Prashanth Reddy credited the state government for constructing the Secretariat with state of art facilities and being environmentally friendly.

Delighted over receiving the award, Prashanth Reddy said that it was chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s vision that has successfully increased the green cover in Telangana by 7.7 percent since the state formation.
“Telangana government further plans to install solar power panels at the Secretariat in order to save electricity and encourage renewable energy,” said Prashanth Reddy.

Hyderabad: Hookah worth Rs 60,000 seized in Golconda, 2 arrested

Hyderabad: A hookah parlor was raided by Task Force police officials in the Golconda area for operating the place without a valid license. ‘The Pan house N More’ was raided on Tuesday following which two were arrested and 22 Hookahs were seized.
In the raid, 22 hookahs worth Rs. 60,000 were recovered from the accused. Mirza Ibrahim Ahmed (23), Mohd Wajeed (22) were arrested while the third person Mirza Furqan Baig managed to escape.
According to a press release from the Hyderabad police, on enquiry, Mirza Ibrahim Ahmed confessed that he and his friend Mirzaq Furqan Baig had decided to earn easy money by providing hookah to customers at Mirza Garden function in Golconda.

The police said that Mirza Ibrahim Ahmed had dumped a huge quantity of ‘magic charcoal’ and other hookah items which are highly flammable in nature and could result in fire accidents
“Mirza Ibrahim Ahmed and Modh Wajeed had taken no safety precautions while dumping charcoals hence, they violated the guidelines under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and and Hyderabad City Police Act,” the police said.
