  • Mercury Drops After Snowfall, Rains In J&K; Minus 10.4°C In Gulmarg

    Srinagar, Jan 26: Amid forecast for isolated to scattered light rain and snow in the next 24 hours, most parts of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a drop in minimum temperature on Thursday.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 1.2°C against last night’s 0.0°C. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 2.2°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against minus 0.2°C on the previous night and it was 3.7°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 2.4°C against minus 2.6°C on the previous night and it was 3.7°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.6°C against minus 0.7°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 10.4°C against minus 4.6°C on the previous night and it was 2.9°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at minus 1.7°C against minus 0.6°C on the previous night and it was above 0.8°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 6.3°C against 10.1°C on the previous night. It was 2.4°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
    Banihal recorded a low of 1.2°C (above normal by 1.4°C), Batote minus 0.5°C (below normal by 2.2°C), Katra 5.6°C (1.3°C below normal) and Bhadarwah 0.6°C (1.4°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 9.0°C and minus 8.1°C respectively, the official said.

    While isolated to scattered light rain and snow are forecast, the MeT said that mainly dry weather (80%) was expected on January 27-28 and light to moderate snow and rain likely from January 29th night -30 ( 60%).

    He said in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours, Qazigund received 20.0cm of snow, Pahalgam 40.7cm, Kokernag 35.0cm and Gulmarg 33.5cm. In the last few days, Gulmarg has received over 3ft of snowfall, he said.

    Kashmir is under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21. It does not mean an end to the winter either. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.(GNS)

    SRINAGAR: After experiencing rain and snow during the last 24 hours, Jammu and Kashmir is expecting a generally dry weather on Thursday, as per the MeT office.

    The 40-day king period of harsh winter cold known locally as the ‘Chillai Kalan’ which started in December 21 will end on January 30.

    Meanwhile, Srinagar registered 1.2 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam minus 2.4 degree and Gulmarg minus 10.4 degree as the minimum temperature.

    Ladakh recorded a low of minus 8.1 degree, while Leh was at minus 9.

    Jammu clocked 6.3 degrees, Katra 5.6, Batote minus 0.5, Banihal 1.2 and Bhaderwah 0.6 as the minimum temperature

    Mostly dry weather is expected at most places in Jammu and Kashmir today.

    In the afternoon/evening, rain/snow showers of light intensity can occur at a few places in Udhampur, Kishtwar, Doda, Ramban, Kulgam, Shopian and Anantnag districts. A light to moderate spell of snowfall can occur in higher reaches of Anantnag and Ganderbal districts (areas adjacent to Pahalgam, Tral and Sonamarg). A light-intensity spell is also possible in higher reaches of Bandipora.

    Developments have taken place a few hours earlier than expected.
    Places mentioned in the forecast can receive rain/snow showers today. Overall no major spell is expected

    AH = Most places started getting rains/snow from evening onwards. Its intensity varied from area to area. Higher reaches in Ramban, Kishtwar and Doda districts received moderate to heavy snowfall. Plains usually saw rains and light to moderate snowfall was too recorded in some areas.

    F = “The intensity of the system is likely to be more over Jammu areas (75% chances) and south Kashmir (60% chances). It is anticipated that precipitation distribution will differ greatly, which means snow accumulation will also differ widely.”

    AH = Intensity of this weather system was maximum over parts of Jammu, followed by south Kashmir. Central and north Kashmir parts witnessed only light rains/snow — Gulmarg and a few other places recorded heavy snowfall.
    Many places in south Kashmir recorded moderate to heavy snowfall.

    F = “Overall most precipitation is expected to fall between Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening. Mostly dry weather is expected on Thursday and Friday.”

    AH = Most of the precipitation was recorded between Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening. Mostly dry weather is expected today and tomorrow across Jammu and Kashmir. A separate forecast was issued in the morning today in which different areas are mentioned where precipitation is possible today.

These awards are conferred each year on the eve of Republic Day in recognition of contributions made by outstanding achievers in different fields viz; Achievements in the field of Literature, performing Art, excellence in Art & Crafts, Social Reforms and Empowerment, Meritorious Public Service, Lifetime Achievement in any other field, Award for Outstanding Sports Persons, Outstanding Media Persons and Outstanding Industrial Entrepreneurship.

    This year, the government has conferred the award in the category of bravery to Deepak Kumar (Posthumously) S/o Rajinder Kumar R/o Dangri, Rajouri, Saroj Bala W/o Late Rajinder Kumar R/o  Dangri, Rajouri.

    In the field of Literature, the Jammu and Kashmir Government Award, 2022 for Literature have been conferred on Dhian Singh (Writer), Dr. Neelam Sarin (Hindi/Dogri Writer), Rajeshwar Singh Raju (Hindi/Dogri Writer), Ghulam Nabi Haleem (Kashmiri Author), Nisar Rahi (Pahari Writer).

    The award in the category of Performing Arts have been conferred to Vidyut Jamwal (Film Actor), Aditya Dhar (Director), Mir Sarwar (Film Actor), Iqbal Khan (Film Actor), Noor Mohammad (Kashmiri Folk Singer).

    49 Million Fruit and Lemon Trees Will Be Planted In Saudi Arabia’s First Phase – Kashmir News

    The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) has started implementing the first phase of two initiatives to plant 49 million fruit and lemon trees in various regions of the Kingdom as part of the ambitious Saudi Green Initiative.

    These include 45 million fruit trees in agricultural terraces, and four million lemon trees with renewable water by the year 2030.

    The initiatives, with the slogan of “From Ambition to Action”, will be implemented in cooperation with the Agricultural Development Fund and the private sector establishments.

    These initiatives are expected to provide more than half of the Kingdom’s imports of fruits, amounting to around SR4.5 billion, so as to achieve the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

    This was revealed during a workshop organized by the Ministry on Tuesday at its headquarters in Riyadh.

  • Govt Creates 20 Posts For TMG

    SRINAGAR: The Government on Wednesday created 20 posts in different categories for establishment of Terror Monitoring Group (TMG) in Jammu and Kashmir.

    According to a government order, they include one post of Senior Superintendent of Police, six posts each of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Inspectors and Head Constables besides one post of follower.

    The TMC was ordered to be constituted by the Ministry Of Home Affairs, Government of India, in early 2019.

    The group, comprising of eight members, has Additional DGPCID of J&K Police as its Chairman. It also has IGP of J&K Police,representatives from Intelligence Bureau (IB), National Investigation Agency (NIA),Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Central Board of Indirect taxes and Customs (CBIC), Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), as its members.

    The terms of reference of the TMG include, “taking action against hardcore sympathisers among government employees including teachers etc providing overt or covert support to such activities”.

    The MHA also charges the TMG with action against all registered cases related to militancy, militant financing and militancy-related activities and bring them to a logical conclusion.

    It is also tasked with the work of “identify all key persons including leaders of the organisations who are involved in supporting (militancy) in any form and take concerted action against them.( GNS)

    Srinagar, Jan 25: Two Jammu and Kashmir residents are among 91 Padma Shri Awardees, whose names were announced on Wednesday after the approval from the President of India on the occasion of Republic Day 2023.

    According to a handout of Ministry of Home Affairs, a copy of which lies with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) Mohan Singh and Ghulam Muhammad Zaz have been conferred with the Padma Shri Awards this year.
