    115 civilians, 135 forces personnel killed in J&K since 2020: Centre

    Srinagar, Feb 07: Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that from 2020 to January 2023, 115 civilians and 135 security forces have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir.

    The minister, in a written reply, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said 37 civilian were killed and 61 were injured, while 62 security forces personnel were als killed and 106 injured in 2020.

    “Similarly, year 2021 witnessed 41 civilian killing and 75 injuries while 42 security forces personnel lost their lives and 117 were injured. Year 2022 witnessed 30 civilian casualties and subsequently 134 were injured while 31 security forces personnel were killed and 87 injured.”

    Till January 31 2023, he said 7 civilian were killed and 23 sustained injuries while no casualty or injury was reported from the security forces side.

    He further said that the government has a policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and the security situation has improved significantly in Jammu and Kashmir.

    “Various measures have been taken by the Government to protect the lives of the civilians in Jammu and Kashmir which include the round-the-clock nakas at strategic points. Group security in the form of static guards. Intensified Cordon and Search Operations (CASO) to effectively deal with the challenges posed by terrorist organizations,” he said

    “Sharing of intelligence inputs on a real-time basis, amongst all security forces, operating in Jammu and Kashmir. Day & night area domination, security arrangements through appropriate deployment.”

    He said the measures also preventive operations involve identifying the strategic supporters of terrorism and initiating investigations to expose their mechanisms of aiding and abetting terrorism.

    “Identifications of vulnerable spots to prevent terrorist attacks on civilians. Besides, sensitizing men on the ground about the issue and initiation of measures to defeat the machination of terrorists or their mentors,” he added.

    He also said CRPF has imparted necessary training to 948 Village Defence Guard members in collaboration with District Police Rajouri from Jan 01 to Jan 25 this year—(KNO)

    Gold, Silver Prices Today: On Tuesday, February 7, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) witnessed increases in the prices of gold and silver for the second straight day.

     

    Despite unfavourable global  conditions, gold prices increases to Rs 57,106  per 10g on Tuesday, in accordance with international rates. According to the most recent market  price list, the 10g of 22-carat gold  costs Rs 52,750, whereas 10g of 24-carat gold  costs Rs 57,550, In India.

     

    Meanwhile, the price of  silver per 100g is approximately Rs 7,130. The price of gold and silver is  determined by global markets.

    On the other hand, silver will cost more if the values rupee declines  in relation to  the dollar.

    SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested an extortionist who was masquerading as a militant with toy weapons in Pulwama.

    Details revealed that JKP in Rajpora received a written complaint stating that at about 19:30 hours, while on the way home from his clinic, some unknown person intercepted him, threatened him with weapons, and asked for money. They took away Rs 3300 from him, the only amount that he was carrying.

    Upon this report, an FIR vide number 8/2023 under relevant sections of law was registered and an investigation was set into motion.

    During the course of the investigation, several persons were rounded up, one among them identified as Adil Yousuf Dar of Bellow village was interrogated, who revealed that he has committed the said crime using toy pistols.

    Upon his disclosure two toy pistols, 3 valets, one Redmi mobile phone, Rs 3330, 2ATM cards, Adhar Card, a driving license, Pan Card, Election Card, and Jio Sim belonging to the complainant were recovered from his possession.

    Police said further investigation is underway.

    SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have put the services of two cops under suspension even though it asserted that a youth, who died in mysterious circumstances, has committed suicide. The incident was reported from Kathua.

    Details revealed that Sonu Kumar, 42, died in mysterious conditions in the custody of police Post (PP) Nagri in Kathua on February 6, evening. Son of

    Jagdish Chander of Sakta Chak, Kathua, he was arrested by Nagri cops on February 4, during Naka checking in Goond area (FIR No. 40/2023 U/S 8/21/22 NDPS Act). Police said he was arrested when during frisking they recovered approximately seven grams of heroin (Chitta) like narcotics from his possession.

    After he was reported dead, he was shifted to GMC Kathua for post-mortem.

    The family has claimed that their ward was killed in custody. They said he was hail and hearty and the soul bread winner for his wife and three minors. The family seeks investigations in the case.

    However, police said Kumar committed suicide using his blanket. SSP Kathua

    Shivdeep Singh Jamwal termed Kumar as drug-peddler. He said there was an FIR under NDPS Act registered against him in 2017. In 2018 he was involved in a ransom case.

    Since the police have started investigations in the case, they have suspended two cops till the outcome of the investigations, reports added.

    SRINAGAR: Reports said that a resident was charred to death in an early morning fire incident in Srinagar’s Qamarwari area.

    Local news gatherer KDC identified the person as Bashir Ahmad Baba, son of Abdul Gani.

    Though the details are yet to emerge, initial reports said the death occurred due to a fire that started with a Kangri, Kashmir’s traditional fire pot.

    Baba was rushed to SMHS Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

    The news gatherer quoted a police officer confirming the incident, insisting the cause of the fire is being investigated. FSL has been associated with the investigations process, the report added.

    During the course of investigation, several persons were rounded up, one among them identified as Adil Ah Dar s/o M Yousuf Dar r/o Bellow was interrogated professionally, who revealed that he has committed the said crime using toy pistols.
    Upon his disclosure following articles were recovered:

    • 1. Toy pistols= 2 nos
    • 2. valets = 3 nos,
    • 3. Redmi Mobile phone 1
    • 4. Cash of Rs 3330.
    • 5. JKBank ATM =1 no

    6. Adhar card, 7. SBI ATM Card, 8. Driving Liscence, 9. Pan Card , 10.Election Card , 11. Jio Sim card.belonging to complainant.

    12. Voucher bearing no 678 of Altaf Electric works Shopain. Further investigation into the matter is in progress.

    General public are requested not to fall in any such trap and to inform concerned Police Station about any such incident.

    Srinagar, Feb 7: Barring Srinagar and Qazigund, the minimum temperature recorded a fall in Jammu and Kashmir with Gulmarg being the coldest place in the J&K at 7.0°C on Tuesday.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 2.7°C against 1.8°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 3.1°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 0.4°C against minus 1.6°C °C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 5.9°C against minus 0.2°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.7°C against 1.1°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 7.0°C against minus 3.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury recorded a drop and settled at minus 1.0°C against minus 0.3°C on the previous night and it was 1.0°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 8.4°C against 11.9°C on the previous night. It was 1.1°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a drop by 4.0°C, recording a low of 0.2°C than previous night (overall below normal by 0.8°C). Batote, he said, recorded a low of 2.0°C (below normal by 0.2°C), Katra 8.8°C (1.4°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 0.2°C (0.5°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 11.4°C and minus 10.0°C respectively, the official said. While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.

    Regarding the forecast, the MeT official said that the weather will be mainly dry during the next 24 hours.

    For subsequent two days, he said, there is a possibility of “isolated to widespread light to moderate rain, snow and thunders. (GNS)
