    Budgam, Feb 10: An elderly man was crushed under a moving train in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Friday afternoon, officials said here.

    An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the train mowed down the man between Mazhom and Budgam section.

    He said the man died on the spot. “He has been identified as Mohammad Ismail Dar (70) son of Abdul Ahad Dar of Shapora Wadwan, Budgam.”

    Meanwhile, police have taken cognizance of the incident and registered a case in this regard—(KNO)

    SRINAGAR: Amid the ongoing Integrated Management Action Plan (IMAP) for Wetland Conservation Reserves of Kashmir, authorities at J&K Wildlife Department claim that more than 40 lakh migratory birds arrived in the valley wetlands in the last four years, while 2022 recorded the highest arrival with more than 12 lakh guest birds.

    Quoting Wildlife Warden Wetlands, Ifshan Dewan news agency KNO reported that the last four years recorded the arrival of more than 40 lakh migratory birds in the valley wetlands. “2022 recorded the highest numbers with as many as 12 lakh migratory birds visiting Kashmir,” she said.

    Ifshan also said that the census of migratory birds for the year 2023 is likely to start next week.

    According to the statistical figures shared by the Wildlife Department, the year 2019 recorded the arrival of around 9 lakh migratory birds, 8 lakh in 2020, 11 lakh in 2021 and approximately 12 lakh in 2022.

    We have recorded the arrival of around 70 species of migratory birds, Dewan said.

    While the officials last month said that a rare species of migratory duck was sighted at Wullar Lake after 84 years; every year, lakhs of migratory birds from Siberia, Europe, and Central Asia arrive in the Kashmir Valley.

    As per the authorities at the Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Department, interventions are taking place under the Integrated Management Action Plan (IMAP) in various wetlands of Kashmir in order to improve the habitat conditions to make them suitable for migratory waterfowl.

    Notably, the five-year Integrated Management Action Plan (IMAP) 2022-2027 for Kashmir Wetland Conservation Reserves has outlined a number of threats and challenges in conserving the valley’s wetlands.

    According to the document, the risks to the valley wetlands include siltation, weed infestation, pollution, habitat modification, water quality degradation, solid waste, and encroachment.

    SRINAGAR: The traffic movement on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway has been halted for the last 13 hours due to intermittent shooting stones in Ramban district, officials said here on Friday.

    Quoting an official the news agency KNO reported that shooting stones near Mehar, Panthyal and Cafeteria Morh stretch since yesterday evening have disrupted the traffic movement on the highway.

    He said after clearance of debris and halting of shooting stones, traffic will resume.

    Meanwhile, Traffic police advised drivers and commuters to travel with caution and after confirming the road status.

    SRINAGAR: Parts of Kashmir Valley including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall while rains lashed plains in the last 24 hours. The weather has improved and is likely to stay mainly dry for next 24 hours even though there are chances of scattered rains and snow at isolated places.

    Quoting a meteorological department official news agency GNS reported that Srinagar received 0.8mm of rain during the 24 hours till 0830 hours today, Qazigund 27.6mm, Kokernag 22.2mm while Pahalgam had 7.4cms of snow, Kupwara 32cm( over 1-ft) and Gulmarg 33 cms(over 1.1-ft). Rains also lashed Jammu region with Jammu city receiving 1.1mm, Banihal 49.1mm, Batote 27.3mm, Katra 3.1mm, Bhaderwah 31.4mm during the time, he said.

    Meanwhile, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 0.7°C against 0.4°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 0.5°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 1.8°C against minus 0.8°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.3°C against minus 2.4°C on the previous night and it was 4.7°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.6°C, the same as on the previous night and it was 2.1°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.0°C against minus 4.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.2°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at minus 0.5°C against 2.3°C on the previous night and it was 0.7°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 12.8°C against 9.9°C on the previous night. It was 2.7°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 2.0°C (above normal by 0.8°C), Batote 2.2°C (below normal by 0.4°C), Katra 10.6°C (2.5°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 2.1°C (1.9°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 8.0°C and minus 9.2°C respectively, the official said.

    While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.

    JK Board 10th Exam Day Instructions

    SRINAGAR: Three members of a family were injuries after their house caught fire last night in Poonch district, officials said on Friday.

    Quoting officials news agency GNS reported that yesterday around 10:30 p.m., house of Mohammad Akram son of Sadar Din resident of Arai Village caught fire. Subsequently there was also a cylinder blast which amplified the fire. Three members of the family sustained burnt injured and were shifted to district hospital Poonch for further treatment. They have been identified as Imer Din, his wife Zaytoon Akhter and Saleema Akhter wife of Mohammad Akram.

    Soon after the incident a joint team of Police, army and firefighters reached the spot and the fire was brought under control, they said.

    Meanwhile, a police officer said that investigation has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the fire.
