    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 11 (GNS): After morning hiccups due to snowfall and reduced visibility, flight operations to and fro resumed at Srinagar International airport. While there were no cancellations, the morning delays caused some congestion in the afternoon, officials said.

“Our peak hour passenger capacity is 950. That is 450 arriving and 500 departing passengers,” Director airport Srinagar Kuldeep Singh Rishi said in a tweet, adding, “A slight weather disruption with a few delays results in bunching of several flights and consequent congestion.”

Earlier, he said, visibility at the airport increased from 500M to 1000 M, allowing resumption of the air traffic at the airport.

The operations resumed with the arrival of Vistara (UK643) and SpiceJet (SEJ8963) at the airport, he added.

In the morning, as per GNS, the authorities had to divert a few flights due to reduced visibility amid light snowfall this morning.  (GNS)

He observed that the task of cleanliness is basic and understood by all. He emphasised on conducting the cleanliness activities in a dedicated manner with clear objective to remove all the dirt around us. He remarked that this task is easy if  everyone considers it as basic  necessity; just as food, shelter, water, electricity and clothes.

Emphasising on active involvement of people and PRI members in such activities the Chief Secretary asked officers to motivate and convince the rural population by sensitizing them about the significance of the cleanliness. He emphasized that it is vital for sustenance of good health and prosperity of the people. He stated that no human likes to reside in a dirty place. He directed all to make it a mission and make a resolve that we have to make our rural areas clean and hygienic by this year’s Independence Day without any fail.

The Commissioner Secretary, RDD, Mandeep Kaur in her address revealed that the progress of UT from last few years is although good but much has to be achieved yet. She made out that around 4400 of our villages are in the aspiring category of becoming ODF+ villages.

She set out that the model is lying with us and the process is underway to make whole of the UT as ODF+ within the  given timeframe. She made out that much of the work like door to door collection of waste and clearing of legacy waste has been started in all of our villages.

While highlighted the importance of capacity building she said that it helps us in implementation of our policies in a smooth manner. She remarked that the trainings are going to be imparted in every panchayat in order to take the mission to its conclusion.

In his Welcome address, the Director Rural Sanitation, Charandeep Singh made out that the mission is the outcome of the priority nation gives to sanitation of villages. He revealed that more than 140 villages have already been declared ODF+ in the UT. He said that this capacity building would enhance our ability to perform the task in an efficient manner. He emphasized bringing about  behavioural change rather  than just creating the physical infrastructure.

He said that we have been successful in preparation of DPRs to create the Soak pits, Composit pits, Leach pits, Twin pits besides the plans for solid, liquid and plastic waste management. He acknowledged that today we have district plans available for each component of cleanliness and the necessary infrastructure and manpower is in place everywhere to make our villages clean.

During the ceremony it was revealed that after this Divisional level workshop the trainings are to be held at district level to train master trainers. These Master Trainers would thereby impart trainings at panchayat level. It was given out that at least two trainers would be trained in each block. A pool of around 600-650 field trainers would be created to give trainings in all the 4280 GPs in 285 blocks across the 20 districts of the UT.

The objectives of this programme was to undertake capacity building activities in Gram Panchayats to ensure open defecation free behaviours among all, to ensure proper solid and liquid waste management and to encourage cost effective and appropriate technologies for ecologically safe and sustainable sanitation.

These also include strengthening of grass root democracy of Jammu and Kashmir through Capacity building & training and Exposure visits, besides  developing  governance capabilities of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRls) to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs).

Pertinent to mention here that all the Deputy Commissioners and concerned officers of the RDD present in the training program like ACDs and BDOs committed to put in their best efforts for achieving ‘ODF Plus Model’ villages by the deadline of 15th of August this year as directed by the Chief Secretary.

GNS has learnt that bodies of four persons namely Shabir Ahmad Khawaja son of Abdul Rasheed, resident of Dildar Karnah, who passed on February 8 at Bemina Srinagar; Sahib Jan wife of Ali Shan Bhadana, resident of Amrohi, who passed at SMHS Hospital Srinagar February 9; Mohammad Saeed son of Mohammad Yaqoob Qureshi, resident of Nawagabra who passed at SKIMS Soura, are currently kept in the mortuary at District Hospital Handwara.

Meanwhile the bereaved family members have made a fervent appeal to the district administration and other relevant offices to facilitate the return to assist them in ferrying back the bodies to respective native places.

“Now that it already is almost four days that we are stuck here, we humbly urge district administration Kupwara and other authorities to kindly help us”, said one of the bereaved family members.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Dr. Doifode Sagar Dattatray told GNS that the office has sent a chopper requisition to lift the bodies. “The bodies maybe lifted tomorrow as per flying conditions”, he said.

In a somewhat similar case, the district administration alongside DH Handwara, dispatched bodies of two elderly persons to their native places, Karnah and Tangdhar, earlier this month.

  • Nomination of Numberdars Runs Opposite To Govt’s Claims Of Strengthening Democracy In J&K: Farooq

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 11 (GNS): National Conference President and Member of the Parliament Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said the recent move of J&K administration to nominate Numberdars/Chowkidars for villages and towns across J&K runs contrary to the government claims of strengthening democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Echoing the concerns of a delegation of Numberdars that had called on him, Dr. Farooq said that the government is trying to bring in their own people for this important position through backdoor.

Dr Farooq said the association members who called on him resented the manner in which the incumbent Numberdars were being shown the door and the new ones nominated by the incumbent administration ditching all established norms and procedures. “The incumbent numberdars who command public confidence as persons are being shown the doors. It seems the administration, by nominating candidates of their choice, is trying to set a political discourse in the villages and towns that suits their cause,” he said.

“The positions of Numberdar and Chowkidar are very significant in terms of better coordination at the grassroot levels and for that reason the government should have acted more sensibly rather than in this arbitrary way,”Dr Farooq said adding, “The process of selection cannot evade accountability and public scrutiny. The manner in which the process is being carried out raises a number of questions and it’s the government which has to come clean.” (GNS)

  • Haj 2023 To Be Cheaper By 80K, Each Pilgrim To Pay Rs 3.80 Lakh

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Haj Committee chairperson Safeena Baig Saturday said that this year Haj 2023 will be cheaper by almost Rs 80,000 and that each pilgrim is supposed to pay Rs 350,000 to 3,70,000 maximum for performing Haj this  year.

Addressing a press conference here, Baig said after hectic deliberations between Haj Committee of India (HCoI) and the Saudi Government, Haj has been made cheaper this year. “As per our estimates, Haj 2023 will be cheaper by Rs 80,000. Each pilgrim who would otherwise pay Rs 4.50 lakh will have to pay between Rs 3,50,000 to Rs 3,70,000,” news agency KNO quoted Baig as having said.

She said that this year, over 10,000 pilgrims from J&K will perform the holy journey of Haj. “Haj office in Srinagar will facilitate every pilgrim including those who are having issues related to passport,” Baig said, adding that the Haj applications are already up on the official website of Haj Committee of India: www.hajcommittee.gov.in free of cost. “Earlier, every pilgrim had to pay Rs 300 for the form. Now, the form can be downloaded and filled with ease,” she said.

The J&K Haj Committee chairperson said that in case of need of conducting the RTPCR test, the government will bear the expenses and take samples of the pilgrims free of cost. She said that the pilgrims above 70-years of age will be prioritised for the Haj while women aged 45 years, without Mehram, can perform the pilgrimage in the groups. “A group of four women without mahram can perform the Haj 2023,” she said, adding that the Saudi Government has given a relaxation to the women who are not having any mahram but yearn to perform Haj.

She also said that from Azizia to Haram, pilgrims are likely to get direct bus services. “This has been the demand of pilgrims who performed the Haj in 2022,” she said. Asked whether there was any plan to address the issues of pilgrims in Makah and Madina as last year, many pilgrims complained of ill treatment by the hotels there, Baig said: “This year, Haj officers will create different groups on Whatsapp and stay in touch with pilgrims. In case of any issue or grievances, immediate redressal would be done.”

Pertinently, there will be 25 embankment points across the country for the pilgrims this year. HCoI has maintained that the pilgrimage this year will be much smoother than previous pilgrimages.
