    Qazighund, May 08: At least 10 people including 8 tourists have got stuck near old tunnel in Qazigund area of Kulgam district when they were on their to Kashmir, officials said on Monday.

    An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the tourists got stuck near the tunnel due to unexpected snowfall.

    “Among the people who have got stuck include 8 tourists from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, driver of the vehicle and its helper,” he said.

    Meanwhile, Tehsildar Qazigund Khursheed Ahmad Tantray told KNO that they are stuck on B-Top, which is around 20 km above Jawahar Tunnel.

    He said a team has been rushed to the spot to rescue them

    Meanwhile, authorities have closed Sinthan Pass road for all sorts of traffic in view of the bad weather predictions, while traffic in plying normally on Srinagar-Jammu highway—(KNO)

    Srinagar, May 8: District administration Ramban has ordered for closure of all schools, upto Class 8, for the day, amid ongoing heavy rains across the district.

    Deputy Commissioner Ramban Mussarat Islam, as per GNS, ordered for the closure of the schools albeit asking for scheduled conduct of exams, if any, in the district.

    “All Schools (Government & Private) up to middle level (Class 8) in Ramban District shall remain closed today in view of heavy rains. However, exams if any, shall be held as per schedule”, Deputy Commissioner Ramban said.

    In the meantime, the administration has also urged people to ensure their children do not go anywhere near rivers and nallahs due to risen water levels.

    “People are advised to ensure their children do not go anywhere near rivers and nallahs as water level has risen due to incessant rains”, the DC office wrote on its Twitter handle. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: The residents of Mir Mohallah of Soura here have alleged that a local inhabitant, who was on oxygen concentrator support has lost his life after the Power Development Department (PDD) snapped electricity in the locality for opposing the installation of smart meters.

    Blaming PDD department for the death of a patient, the residents said that the deceased was on the oxygen concentrator support, which functions on electricity only, but due to the snapping of electricity for many days, the person has lost his life.

    “We demand justice as just for the reason of not installing the smart meters, the PDD has snapped the electricity in our area. There are so many people who are on oxygen support,” said a group of locals.

    The locals said that even to make the arrangement for the funeral, they need electricity, which has been snapped days ago.

    Meanwhile, a senior official from the PDD said that the electricity in the area has been snapped as the residents didn’t allow the installation of smart meters, adding that the concerned Tehsildar and SHO are also aware about it.

    “My sympathies are with the family, if there was any such medical emergency, there should have been necessary alternatives or arrangements made. Yes, the electricity is snapped in the area as the people did not allow the installation of smart meters,” he said.

    The official said that even today they had sent a team to the area for the installation of smart meters but were again stopped by locals of the area. (KNO)

    SRINAGAR: A court in Uri has sentenced an accused to four months of simple imprisonment after convicting him in a cheque bounce case.

    A case was filed by Mohammad Dawood Lone, son of Abdul Karim Lone, resident of Ramgie Uri, against Abdul Rasheed Bhat, son of Anaytullah Bhat, a resident of Ihtishampora Boniyar under Section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act before Sub-judge Uri.

    In a 22-page long order, of which the gist is produced here, the learned judge, Altaf Hussain Khan, observed that the accused is sentenced to simple imprisonment for a period of four months and a fine of Rs 12,00,000 (Rupees Twelve Lakhs only) since the accused has paid an amount of Rs 1,94,0000 (Rs One Lakh and Ninety-Four Thousand Rupees) during the pendency of the proceedings in terms of the order passed by this court under section 143-A of N.I act, and the same is set off from the fine imposed. The rest of the fine amount of Rs 10,06,000 (Rupees Ten Lakhs and Six Thousand) shall be paid by the accused to the complainant as compensation within the period of 30 days from the date of this judgment.

    “With these observations, the accused is convicted of the offense U/S 138 of N.I Act. However, keeping in view the object of Negotiable Instrument Act, the financial gains which the cheque amount in question could have fetched had the payment of the amount mentioned in the cheques been made to the complainant by the accused on the due date, as the complaint in hand has been filed on 21/02/2022. The trial of the case has reached a conclusion within a span of one year and two months. Furthermore, the accused is apparently of old age and is suffering from illness. His conduct during the trial has also remained satisfactory. He has also paid the interim compensation of Rs 1,94,000 to the complainant pursuant to the order passed by this court on 06/05/2022, in the application for interim relief submitted under section 143-A of Negotiable Instruments Act and other facts and circumstances. The accused is sentenced to simple imprisonment for the period of four months and a fine of Rs 12,00,000 (Rupees Twelve Lakhs only) since the accused has paid an amount of Rs 1,94,0000 (Rs One Lakh and Ninety-Four Thousand Rupees) during the pendency of the proceedings in terms of the order passed by this court under section 143-A of N.I act, and the same is set off from the fine imposed.   • Four Grenades, 90 Bullets Among Other Ammo Recovered In JK

    SRINAGAR: On Sunday, Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested two Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and seized a large cache of ammunition, including four hand grenades and 90 AK bullets, from their hideout and residences in Mendhar sub division of Poonch.

    According to an official, the arrested OGWs have been identified as Mushtaq Ahmed and Nisar Ahmed, who were detained in connection with the ambush attack on an army vehicle in Bhata Dhurian that occurred on April 20, 2022. The case was registered under FIR number 42/2022 of Police Station Gursai, and five army personnel lost their lives in the attack.

    After sustained questioning of the accused, an operation was launched by the police based on the disclosure statement of Nisar Ahmed, son of Mohd Shareef, and Mushtaq Ahmed, son of Mir Mohd, both residents of Gursai Moori. The duo has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Explosive Substance Act, the Indian Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

    During the search of Mushtaq Ahmed’s house, two Chinese grenades, 30 AK bullets, and one AK magazine, among other things, were seized. Similarly, two Chinese grenades, 60 AK bullets, two AK magazines, and Rs 19,000 cash were recovered from Nisar Ahmed’s house. Additionally, the police found several items from the hideout used by militants.

    The police stated that further investigation is underway in the case.(KNO)

    A boy name Aijaz Rashid Malik “B. Pharmacy” student from Handwara area. He left this temporary world on April 7/2023 Friday due to massive heart attack. After his death ,his friend published a book titled (Golden Glorious souL) and dedicated that book to him as a tribute.
    While talking to reporter his friend said :- Aijaz rashid malik is my beloved true souL friend and he will be ever I feel one of the main reasons why I formed such a bond with him was because of the qualities and kindness he possesses , I have never evevr seen a person like aijaz how kind how honest he was and He had been courageous enough to defend me against all odds; compassionate enough to help me and patient enough to listen to what I have to say.
    There are several reasons behind this bonding of ours. One is honestly and affection towards me, My life has improved in many ways by having a soul friend like aijaz and aijaz is one of those people in my life who has always there for me, especially emotionally. If I am feeling down, he will be there to comfort me. And if I need someone to talk to, he will always be there to listen. He is my shoulder to cry on, and a friend who will never judge me.We have been through so many highs and lows together but unfortunately his sudden death has caged me in pain agony and misery but i strongly believe where so ever he is right now he is happy there his souL is in peace and he will be in jannat inshaallah tala as I know where he is now, there are no postmen to deliver letters, but I still write, I hope he is happy and content in heaven, but i miss him down here so terribly.
    I hope he is happy and content in heaven. And he is always ever in my mind ,heart and connected with my souL untill we meet again in jannat…. As i dedicated a beautiful book to him title (Golden Glorious souL) An Eternal Memory untill we meet again, this book is a tribute and glory to him.. I can’t believe I’m writing this.     Anantnag: The Wheel Chair Cricket Association of Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with Shah Bakers Nagum (Shah Iqbal) organised a cricket match for persons with disabilities at Cricket Stadium Palpora Dialgam of Anantnag District.

    The match was held as a mark of respect to the contributions made by the persons with disabilities to the society and to keep them motivated to perform their best in life.

    Played under the theme “know me for my abilities, not my disability”, the idea was to bring these persons as much closer to the society as possible and break the stigma if any associated with the disability.

    The match was Mohammad Iqbal Shah who welcomed and honoured both teams for their participation.

    The match was played between Srinagar Cricket Team and Budgam Team.

    Srinagar Team won the toss and was elected to bat first. They scored 245 runs in the allotted 15 overs.

    In reply, chasing a target of 245 runs to win, Budgam Team secured only 230 in 15 overs and lost match with 15 runs.

    Roomsar Wani was the highest scorer for them who Secured 165 not out declared as Man of the Match while the Budgam Team side, Mohammad Shafi Secured 58 and Naseer ul Gafar secured 98 Runs.

    The winner and runner up teams were awarded with momentos and trophy besides a large number of locals were present on the occasion.

  • Man Injured In Lightning Strike

    SRINAGAR: A man was injured due to a lightning strike in the Aloosa Dal area of Handwara, located in the North Kashmir Kupwara district.

    According to an official, the injured person has been identified as Ab Rashid Mir, son of Gh Ahmad Mir, a resident of Dardsun Reshigund.

    The incident occurred during the evening due to a thunderstorm, and the injured person received immediate first aid at the SDH Kralpora. He was later shifted to the district hospital in Handwara, where his condition is reported to be stable.

  • BSF Soldier Killed, Seven Injured In JK Road Accident

    SRINAGAR: A BSF personnel lost his life and six others were injured in a tragic road accident in Mankote sector of Poonch district on Sunday.

    According to official sources, the Tata-407 (HR39 A 8662) vehicle carrying seven personnel skidded off the road and fell into a 250-feet deep gorge, causing injuries to all of them. The injured personnel were immediately rushed to the hospital, but Constable Ram Chandran from the 158 battalion BSF succumbed to his serious head injury, said a police official.

    The other injured personnel, all constables, were identified as Feroz Ahmed, Sanjay Sarkar, Karamjeet Singh, Ajay Singh, Devender Singh, and the driver Emdadul Haque. The police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the accident. (GNS)
