  • World Tuberculosis Day: Over 18,000 TB Cases Reported In Kashmir In Last Five Years

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: With the efforts of the Health Department, the tuberculosis cases in Kashmir are on decline with authorities claiming that every effort is being taken to make JK TB free by 2025.

Quoting a top health official, KNO reported that TB cases are on decline and more and more districts are showing improvement with each passing day.

The official said that 18,506 cases of tuberculosis have been reported in Kashmir in the last five years.

In 2018, 4,774 TB cases were recorded in JK. In 2019, it was down to 4,080 TB cases, he said, adding that due to less screening because of Covid-19 Kashmir reported 2,840 cases.

Kashmir has recorded over 3376 Tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2022, with Srinagar on the top of the list with 1465 cases.

As per the data, there has been a sharp decline in TB cases in Kashmir division as compared to 2021.

In 2021, Kashmir division reported 3442 TB cases and 3,376 TB cases were reported in 2022, he said.

Out of 3376 TB cases in 2022, Srinagar district reported 1465 cases, followed by Anantnag district with 665 cases, Baramulla registered 599 TB cases, Kupwara district reported 361 cases, Pulwama 172 cases and Budgam district reported 114 TB cases in 2022.

State Tuberculosis officer, Dr Adfar Qadri said that J&K becomes a trendsetter in healthcare as two more districts-Anantnag and Pulwama have been declared TB free.

She said Srinagar has got a gold medal while the UT has got bronze and most of the other districts have maintained the status-quo.

She added last year Kashmir had got 3 gold medals and now they have got upgraded and Pulwama and Anantnag have been declared TB free.

“TB cases are declining in Kashmir. We will achieve TB elimination by 2025 as we are doing intensified and active case finding and case screening,” she said.

She said they had taken several measures over the years to develop infrastructure and employ manpower for the early detection and effective treatment of the disease.

Another official said that TB cases are more prevalent in rural pockets for many reasons. “First, this disease is known as poor man’s disease, though that scenario is changing now. But due to more population and lack of proper nutrition in rural areas, TB is more prevalent there,” he said

People do not seek medical consultation at the initial stage of TB. They usually think they will be fine within some days. But when their situation deteriorates, they consult a doctor,” he said.

He said that TB can be fully treated with an antitubercular drug with appropriate dosage at appropriate time.

Notably as per norms, districts or States/UTs which reported a decline of 20 per cent could have filed the claim under the ‘Bronze’ category which comes with a monetary award of Rs 2 lakh, those with a decline of 40 per cent could have filed the claim under ‘Silver’, and those with 60 per cent could have filed their claim for ‘Gold’. Those with 80 per cent reduction are conferred with ‘TB Free’ status with a monetary award of Rs 10 lakh as part of sub-national certification for TB Free districts and States.

Budgam was the first district to be declared TB free. Sub-national certification is an initiative to mark the progress of districts, states and UTs towards TB free status, which was initiated in 2020 to achieve the target of TB free India by 2025.

The sub-national certification is a process introduced by the Union Health Ministry in 2021 to reward well-performing States/districts when they achieve specific milestones in TB elimination.

The Health Ministry has set a target of reducing incidence of new TB cases by 80% to end TB by 2025 while efforts towards TB elimination vary across States/Districts.

In India, the Revised National TB Control Program (RNTCP) provides free TB treatment to all Government Medical facilities through the Directly Observed Treatment Short course Strategy (DOTS) system, recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Under this system, a patient is given an identification card that tracks their site of infection, severity and treatment course and adding them to a national database. (KNO)

US citizen sentenced to 19 years in Saudi over tweets criticizing govt released

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have released a Saudi-United States (US) citizen sentenced to 19 years in prison for tweets criticizing the Saudi government.

72-year-old Saad Ibrahim Almadi, a retired project manager living in Florida, was arrested in November 2021, while visiting family in the kingdom and was sentenced in October 2022 to 16 years.

In February 2023, his prison sentence had risen to 19 years.

The Saudi court convicted him of attempting to destabilize the kingdom and supporting terrorism.

As per media reports, Saad Almadi had been detained over 14 tweets posted on Twitter over the past seven years, mostly criticizing government policies and accusing them of corruption. He was also banned from travelling for 16 years.

His son, Ibrahim, confirmed the news and said that Saad Ibrahim Almadi was released at 2 am local time on Tuesday and is currently in Riyadh under a travel ban. However, he noted that the family now needs to fight the travel ban.

“All charges have been dropped but we have to fight the travel ban now,” Ibrahim was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters.

It is not yet clear why Mohammed bin Salman’s government decided to release Almadi or whether it was part of a deal with the United States (US).

US President Joe Biden raised the issue of Almadi’s arrest when he visited Saudi Arabia in July 2022.

In this series of animal puzzles, young learners will be amazed to discover the different kinds of animals that exist around the world and the ones that were there in pre-historic times. It is interesting to note that the existence of animals in a specific region largely depends on the weather and the natural vegetation of that area. While assisting in assembling the pieces, grown-ups can discuss with the children the facts regarding the animals on the basis of the information sheet included in the box. The Dinosaurs Set of 4 Puzzles has been designed creatively, made with good quality cardboard and printed using non-toxic inks. Each puzzle is 17.5 x 17.5 cm in size and focuses on one dinosaur – Brachiosaurus (12 pieces), Ankylosaurus (16 pieces), Stegosaurus (20 pieces), and Triceratops (24 pieces). Meant for children of 4 years and above, these puzzles will keep your child engaged while improving their hand-eye coordination, visual skills, logical thinking, concentration and level of patience.
The child has to fix the puzzle pieces together in the correct manner to form the complete picture. Starting from 12 pieces and going up to 24 pieces, the child can begin with the easier puzzle before attempting the more difficult ones.
Assembling the puzzle will improve the child’s fine motor skills, concentration, visual skills, hand-eye coordination, and logical thinking.
Parents may be required initially to guide their child into this new creative activity so as to get them into the flow of arranging all the pieces correctly.

  • How has Iraq changed 20 years after the American invasion?

How has Iraq changed 20 years after the American invasion?

    [ad_1]

Baghdad: Twenty years after the American invasion of Iraq, the Arab country is still suffering the consequences of the invasion, which it claimed came under the pretext of establishing a democratic system that could be generalized to all countries in the region and rid the country of the rule of the late President Saddam Hussein (1979-2003).

On March 20, 2003, an international coalition led by the United States (US) launched a military operation to overthrow Saddam’s regime, and despite its overthrow on April 9, 2003, the American presence continued for two decades, with multiple declarations of withdrawal and then return.

On May 1, 2003, President Bush declared “mission accomplished” aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and ended major combat operations in Iraq.

Before the end of 2003, Saddam was caught by US forces hiding in a ditch near his childhood home in Tikrit. He was later tried by an Iraqi court and executed for his role in the mass killings and crimes against humanity.

The date chosen for his execution, December 30, 2006, which happened to be the first day of Eid al-Adha, has been controversial ever since.

Every year on March 20, millions of Iraqis, along with millions of others around the world, remember the invasion of Iraq, the most significant event that shook the Gulf region, the Middle East, and the world at large in the first decade of the 21st century.

Human Rights Watch in a report published on Sunday, considered that “the Iraqi people paid the highest price for the invasion.” The organization urged “the parties to the conflict to compensate the victims and hold the perpetrators accountable,” but “impunity still exists.”

According to the Iraq Body Count, from 2003 to 2011, the date of the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians were killed and the United States lost nearly 4,500 of its personnel in Iraq.

Iraq is still suffering from the consequences of the decision of the Civil Coalition Authority, led by US Ambassador Paul Bremer, to form the nucleus of the Ministries of Defense and Interior from militia elements, whether those founded in Iran or those formed immediately after the invasion.

After 20 years, the specter of service shortages and corruption looms, leading Iraqis to look pessimistically towards the future, while the threat of climate change, water scarcity, and desertification looms large on the horizon.

    From bad to worse

Although Iraq is an oil-rich country, a third of its 42 million people still live in poverty, with unemployment high among the youth.

Iraqis believe that conditions in Iraq in general have not improved enough, whether at the level of the economy, infrastructure, services, community unity, or state sovereignty.

An Iraqi academic told the Anadolu News Agency that after the fall of Saddam, Iraqis hoped that changing his authoritarian, dictatorial regime would build a new state for them, based on democracy and the fair distribution of wealth.

He added, “After two decades, the change produced a lame political process, tainted by financial and administrative corruption, sectarian quotas, and the sharing of resources between the influential powers.”

This is while the vast majority in Iraq live under the burden of deteriorating services, the prevalence of uncontrolled weapons, corruption gangs, and organized crime gangs, according to the Iraqi academic.

The basic rights that have been partially achieved in Iraq, such as freedom of opinion and expression, are among the fundamental rights established by the United Nations and international treaties, which are included in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In October 2019, a large public demonstration called the “October Revolution” took place in the capital Baghdad and other central and southern Iraqi provinces. Every year the protesters continue to demand their rights.

Protesters called for an end to corruption, improved living conditions and public services, job opportunities, a quota system between Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds, and an end to political power’s dependence on foreign powers, particularly Iran and the US.

  • Kuwait considers granting expat wife citizenship after 18 years

Kuwait considers granting expat wife citizenship after 18 years

    [ad_1]

Kuwait: Kuwait is considering granting the citizenship to expat wife of a Kuwaiti after 18 years of marriage, local media reported.

In this regard, the government of Kuwait submitted a draft law amending Article 8 of Amiri Decree No. 15/1959.

Under the proposed amendments, an ex-pat woman who married a Kuwaiti man will not automatically become a Kuwaiti citizen unless she declares her desire to do so to the minister of the interior and maintains legal residency in Kuwait for a period of 18 years from the date of marriage.

The minister of interior may also prevent her from obtaining Kuwaiti nationality if he deems it necessary.

As per a report by Arab Times, if a woman’s marriage ends due to death or divorce and she has a son or children, she can declare her desire to acquire Kuwaiti nationality, provided she has maintained her legal and normal residence in Kuwait and takes care of her children until one of them reaches the age of 10.

The amendments also state that the minister of interior can grant a expat woman, the wife of a Kuwaiti, the treatment of a Kuwaiti individual after she has announced her desire and the marriage for a period of three years maintained.

According to the Arabic daily Al Rai, the draft law aims to address concerns that the current provision allows expat women married to Kuwaiti nationals to acquire Kuwaiti citizenship only after five years of marriage without having children.

This led to expat women obtaining Kuwaiti nationality and then divorcing them from their Kuwaiti husbands without any ties to Kuwait.

The proposed amendments aim to address this issue by extending the period to 18 years and requiring proof of loyalty and integration into Kuwaiti society.

  • Telangana: March ‘wettest’ in 10 years owing to rainstorm

Telangana: March ‘wettest’ in 10 years owing to rainstorm

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Unseasoned heavy rains, coupled with hailstorms across the state for the past few days mark this year’s March as the wettest in ten years.

After Hyderabad experienced the second hottest February in a decade, March brought in a winter and rainy combination of weather.

Kapra, in the neighbourhood of the city, recorded the highest rainfall of 6.28 cm, while most areas in north Hyderabad witnessed heavy rains coupled with hailstones in several places including Gajularamaram and Kukatapally recording 5.6 cm and 5.05 cm of rainfall respectively.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD-Hyderabad) officials, the phenomenon is abnormal for the month of March when the temperature should have gradually increased as winter subsides completely.

“It was not a normal thunderstorm and hailstorm event that covered almost the entire Telangana. This was because of the presence of two troughs or depressions – east to west and north to south – occurring simultaneously,” the IMD-Hyderabad chief told TOI.

According to statistics collated by Telangana State Development and Planning Society, Telangana received 4.35 cm of rainfall in March 10 years ago.

A decade later, the monthly cumulative until March 19 in the state stands at 3.81 cm while the highest March rainfall of 10.74 cm was recorded in 2008.

Surprisingly, the month of March has witnessed average rainfall exceeding 3 cm only six times in 25 years since 1988.

Another water held that such events are witnessed owing to western disturbances or the winds from the west of India.

However, this year the western disturbances came as a jet stream towards Telangana which instead of being 10 km to 15 km above sea level were extremely low, bringing in massive rainfall and hailstorms.

The experts further claimed that strong unseasonal rain in March might suggest the El Nino effect, which is known to make monsoons weaker and non-monsoon unseasonal showers stronger.

“However, the arrival of the monsoons cannot be predicated until May,” said experts.

    Red alert for rains issued

Many areas in Hyderabad were also issued a red alert on March 18 while the unseasons rain videos trended on social media.

Rains cause heavy losses to crop cultivation sector

Crops cultivated on more than 20,000 acres of land were damaged following unseasonal rains.

Maize, green gram, papaya and mango and other crops, most of which were in flowering and ripening stages were destroyed by the hailstorm that lashed Telangana on Thursday and Friday.

Horticultural crops like mango, rose, onion, and papaya and agricultural crop like maize were damaged by the hailstorm.

According to Agriculture department officials, over 18,826 acres of maize, farmed by around 1,930 farmers, was damaged in the erstwhile Khammam district alone.

Mangoes prices likely to hike over unseasonal rain

Unseasonal rains and pest attacks have affected many mango crops in different districts of the state, resulting in a double blow to their yield.

unseasonal rains and pest attacks have affected many mango crops in different districts of the state, resulting in a double blow to their yield.

Out of the total production of mangoes in the neighbouring districts of Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana, a significant portion is exported to foreign countries like Gulf countries, China, Australia, and others which is also going to be affected subsequently.
