Excise policy scam: Delhi court extends Sisodia’s judicial custody by 2 weeks

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A court here on Monday extended former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody by two weeks in connection with the excise policy case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Before the bench of special judge M.K. Nagpal of the Rouse Avenue Court, the ED had earlier submitted that Sisodia had planted fabricated e-mails to show that there was a public approval for the policy.

“We have evidence that Sisodia had e-mails planted. These have been received not only in the official e-mail account of the Excise Department but even in his personal e-mail account. The content of the e-mails was given by Sisodia which suited his agenda,” the counsel for the ED had told while opposing the bail plea.

    MS Education Academy

“Fabricated e-mails were sent to show that there was a public approval of the policy. This is a sham approvala Illegal ecosystem was created to give benefits to the liquor cartels in lieu of kickbacks.”

The ED’s special public prosecutor Zoheb Hossain had then told the judge that the agency wanted to show him the case diary.

To this, Sisodia’s counsel had said that it should not be done so in secrecy.

“Sealed cover business should go. If something is used against me to deny me my libertya If they are relying on something behind my backa It should be put to me as well,” the counsel said.

However, the probe agency said that the 60 days to complete the investigation against him are not over yet.

The ED said: “We will put it to you after 60 days.”

The court then adjourned the hearing in bail matter for Tuesday.

On April 5, the ED had informed Judge Nagpal that it has found fresh evidence indicating Sisodia’s involvement in the alleged excise scam, and the investigation is at a crucial stage.

The court had extended AAP leader’s custody till April 17 in this case.

On March 21, Sisodia had moved a plea seeking bail plea in ED’s case.

After the CBI arrested the AAP leader on February 26, the ED also arrested him in the same case on March 9.

The probe agency had earlier claimed that within a span of one year, 14 phones have been destroyed and changed, and that Sisodia has been evasive from the start.

2 weeks before killing, Atiq moved SC for protection in UP police custody

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Two weeks before gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad was shot dead while under police escort in Prayagraj, the Supreme Court had dismissed his plea seeking protection during his custody with the Uttar Pradesh Police in the Umesh Pal murder case.

Ahmad (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college for a checkup.

On March 28, the apex court had dismissed Ahmad’s plea for protection and observed that the Uttar Pradesh state machinery would take care of his protection in case of a threat to his life.

    MS Education Academy

When Atiq’s plea had come up for hearing before the top court, a bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela M Trivedi granted him liberty to approach the Allahabad High Court for protection after he had claimed that his life was under threat while being in the custody of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

“Since he is in judicial custody, the Uttar Pradesh state machinery will take care of his protection in case of threat to his life,” the court had said, refusing to record the former Samajwadi Party MP’s counsel’s vehement requests that his life is under threat.

“It is not a case where this court is going to interfere. Liberty granted to move appropriate application before the high court. Whatever is the process prescribed under law will be followed,” the bench had said.

Atiq had sought protection claiming that he and his family have been falsely “roped in” as accused in the Umesh Pal murder case in Prayagraj.

Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 killing of then BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two security guards were killed in a shooting on February 24.

In his plea, Ahmad, who was earlier lodged at the Ahmedabad central jail in Gujarat pursuant to the apex court’s direction, had referred to the statement made by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the floor of the assembly to “completely ruin and destroy” him and claimed there is a “genuine and perceptible threat” to his and his family members’ lives.

UP: “I’ll be killed in 2 weeks…” says Atiq Ahmed’s brother

    [ad_1]

Bareilly: Uttar Pradesh’s mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s brother Ashraf Ahmed a convict in the Umesh Pal murder case on Tuesday claimed that an officer revealed that he will be killed in two weeks.

“I have been threatened by an officer that I’ll be taken out of jail in 2 weeks and will be killed,” said Ashraf when he was brought to Bareilly jail on Tuesday.

He further said that UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath understands his pain as fake cases were also filed against him.

“Allegations levelled against me are fake. CM understands my pain as fake cases were also filed against him,” he added.

He further claimed that the threat was given by a senior official whose name would be divulged to the Chief Minister, Chief Justice of India and also to the Chief Justice of Allahabad.

“This threat was given by a senior officer. I cannot tell his name, but if I am killed, then the closed envelope will reach the Chief Minister and Supreme Court Chief Justice and Allahabad Chief Justice, it will contain his name,” Ashraf said.

Ashraf along with Atiq Ahmed was held guilty in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case by Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj MP-MLA Court on Tuesday which also sentenced Atiq to rigorous life imprisonment in the abduction case of now-deceased Umesh Pal.

Ashraf was shifted to Bareilly jail while Atiq is being brought to Gujarat’s Sabarmati jail.

This is the first time that Atiq Ahmed, who has over 100 cases against him over the last 43 years, has been convicted in a case.

The court also gave life sentences to Dinesh Pasi and Khan Saulat Hanif and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of the three convicts. Seven other accused in the case, including Ashraf, brother of Atiq Ahmed, have been acquitted.

Ahmed’s conviction comes after Umesh Pal, an advocate and a prime witness in the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal, was shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24 this year.

Ahmed is also the main accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. Apart from Umesh Pal, his two security personnel were also shot dead.

Ahmed, a former MP and MLA, was brought by Uttar Pradesh Police from Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Jail to Prayagraj’s Naini jail on Monday after an over 24-hour long drive.

Shanti Devi, the mother of Umesh Pal, said after the court’s verdict that Ahmed should have been given a death sentence for “killing” her son.

“He (Atiq Ahmed) was sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping my son but he should be given a death sentence for killing my son. I have faith in UP CM Yogi Adityanath and the judicial system,” she told reporters.

BSP MLA Raju Pal was murdered on January 25, 2005. Two others Devilal Pal and Sandeep Yadav were also killed.

Umesh Pal was abducted on February 28, 2006. He was allegedly abducted by Atiq Ahmed from a Land Cruiser vehicle near Phansi Imli of the Dhumanganj police station area.

He was “beaten up and electrocuted” and Atiq had “forced Umesh Pal to give a written statement in his favour on March 1, 2006, that he was not present at the scene and did not want to testify”.

Umesh Pal filed a case of kidnapping at Dhumanganj police station in July 2007 after the formation of the BSP government in Uttar Pradesh that year.

Delhi HC grants six weeks to RBI to respond to PIL on Uniform Banking Code

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday granted six weeks’ time to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for filing response in a plea seeking directions to implement Uniform Banking Code.

Filed as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by Advocate and BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, the plea brings up the need for a Uniform Banking Code for foreign exchange transfers to regulate benami transactions and the creation of black money.

A division bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad granted time to RBI for filing a response.

In the previous hearing, the bench had given notice to RBI and directed that the entire set of documents be given to its standing counsel while taking into account the significance of the matter.

Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma appearing for Centre submitted that the plea raised a serious issue which required detailed examination.

The plea stated that the “immigration rules for Visa are same whether a foreigner comes in Business Class or Economy Class, uses Air India or British Airways and comes from USA or Uganda. Likewise, deposit details in Indian banks, including foreign bank branches for Foreign Exchange Transaction must be in the same format whether it is export payment in a current account or salary, in a savings account or donation, in a charity’s current account or service charges payable in YouTuber’s accounts.”

“Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate (FIRC) must be issued and all international and Indian banks must send the link through SMS to get FIRC automatically in case the foreign exchange is being deposited in the account as converted INR (Indian rupee),” it stated.

“Moreover, only a person or company should be permitted to send Indian rupees from one bank account to another bank account inside the territory of India through RTGS, NEFT and IMPS and international banks should not be allowed to use these domestic banking transactions tools,” the plea further said.

  • CD Hospital To Be Shifted To GB Panth Hospital In Next Two Weeks: Official

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Authorities on Tuesday said that the Chest Diseases (CD) Hospital will be shifted to GB Panth Sonwar in next two weeks.

Dr Saleem Tak, Medical Superintendent said that in around next two weeks, CD hospital will be shifted to Sonwar, which was earlier a children hospital.

Oxygen supply wasn’t available to every bed at Sonwar, however, for chest disease patients there is need for oxygen for every bed on which work is going on, he said.

Work would be completed in the next two weeks and soon after that hospital will start functioning there, Dr Tak said.

Notably last year, H&ME Department ordered the shifting of the Children’s Hospital from Sonwar to Bemina, it had also directed the Principal, GMC Srinagar to chalk out an action plan for the shifting of the CD Hospital to GB Panth.

The officials said that the CD Hospital building at Dalgate will be used as an infectious disease hospital while the Tuberculosis division of the pulmonary and respiratory medicine department will also remain functional there.

In October last year, Medical Superintendent CD hospital had written to executive engineer MH&CH Srinagar to inspect support systems and carry out rectifications whatever needed on emergency basis at GB Panth hospital before shifting CD hospital there.

The support systems to be inspected include oxygen plant and piping system to each and every bed of GB Panth hospital to be ensured, generators for backup of electricity need to be serviced and kept ready, Central heating system may be inspected, fire fighting system also needs to be kept ready, Laundry section also needs to be inspected and whatever rectification is needed may be done and Water pumping facility may be checked and kept ready, MS had written

The government is also planning for setting up a drug de-addiction center at the CD’s Dalgate building which will be handled by the concerned department of the GMC, Srinagar, they said.

They said that the GB Pant Hospital has good facilities in terms of space, bed capacity, rooms for doctors, and proper machinery and there are around 250 beds in GB Pant Hospital while CD Hospital has only a 150-bedded capacity.

Notably, on September 16 last year, the pediatric services of GB Pant Hospital, Srinagar were shifted to the newly-constructed 500-bedded Children Hospital at Bemina—(KNO)

  • Florida Republicans seek ban on abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy

Florida Republicans seek ban on abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy

    [ad_1]

    abortion florida 33937

He told reporters after his address that he would sign the abortion bill into law.

Republicans have supermajorities in the House and Senate, so Democrats have no ability to stop the legislation from going forward.

The abortion proposal is a clear signal that DeSantis will support hard-right conservative priorities ahead of his likely 2024 election bid. Florida, once a perennial swing state, has shifted Republican in recent years and the governor has capitalized on the GOP electoral successes by supporting legislation that cracks down on illegal immigration, bans Florida Medicaid from paying for gender-affirming care and limits how race and gender identity can be taught in schools.

The governor last year also supported the state’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy and, after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, said that Florida would expand “pro-life protections.”

The proposal drew widespread criticism from Democrats, including from White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre who said the proposal would affect millions of women, both in Florida and its neighboring states that have stricter limits but whose residents rely on Florida to access abortions.

“We know that these bands are already having a devastating impact on women’s health,” she said. “Politicians like Governor DeSantis … espouse quote, freedom for all, unquote, while directly attacking the freedom to make one’s own health care decisions. Their rhetoric doesn’t come without consequences here.”

Senate President Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) unsuccessfully convinced House leaders last year to add exemptions for rape and incest victims to the 15-week ban. Florida Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book (D-Plantation), who worked with Passidomo last year on the exemptions, said on Tuesday that incest victims are already fleeing the state for treatment and the 6-week bill will only make things worse for them.

“If it’s a war they want, it’s a war they will get,” Book wrote in a statement. “This issue bridges the partisan divide, and we will not go down as easily as they believe.”

State Rep. Jenna Persons-Mulicka (R-Fort Myers) and state Sen. Erin Grall (R-Vero Beach), who filed legislation in their respective chambers, stated in their bills that the exemptions would apply to victims who have been pregnant for less than 15 weeks. They will require anyone seeking the exemptions to provide documentation, such as a court restraining order or police report, to prove they were victimized.

The lawmakers filed the bills on the first day of this year’s Legislative session after months of speculation that legislators would seek to further restrict abortion access. The 15-week ban that took effect in July is enforced but the state Supreme Court is currently weighing a legal challenge to it. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit argue the 15 week ban violates a state privacy clause that the Florida high court had previously cited to strike down abortion bans.

Republican legislative leaders had initially said any future bans would have to wait until the high court decides on the case.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Paul Renner (R-Palm Coast) said the current proposal includes a trigger provision that will enact the 6-week ban if the high court strikes down the privacy clause. Renner brought up the state’s argument in the Supreme Court case that the privacy clause relates to informational and data privacy rights.

“This is going ahead and having the conversation on where we want to land in Florida,” Renner said. “That’s where we’ve landed.”

The proposed measure would place Florida with six other states that have already approved 6-week bans, including Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Dakota and Oklahoma.

The bill also provides up to $30 million for the Florida Department of Health to create a statewide parenting support network. The network would beef-up state-funded services already offered to pregnant people by expanding resources to those who gave birth within one year. The measure also prohibits doctors from using telehealth services to consult with patients about treatment with abortion medications.

The head the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates criticized the 6-week ban proposal, saying it would worsen the lives of parents statewide.

“This near total abortion ban has nothing to do with what is best for Floridians and everything to do with Ron DeSantis’ ambition to be president and what he thinks Republican primary voters want,” Alliance Director Laura Goodhue wrote in a statement.

Kelly Garrity contributed to this report.

The world champion explained that he first gained weight and then lost weight again in the long off-season phase

On a diet with Verstappen: lost 10 kg in six weeks

    Weight cuts
Red Bull’s weight problems were talked about a lot last season. At the beginning of the year, when Ferrari had by all accounts the best car on the track, there was much concern within the Milton Keynes team about the excessive mass that the RB18 carried, learned during the Grands Prix. Speaking of this at the end of the season, Adrian Newey himself defined “embarassing” the difficulties that the Austrian team had encountered. However, it was difficult to imagine that in view of 2023 it was not only the car that was being put on a diet but also the team’s main driver: Max Verstappen. The two-time world champion, speaking to the site De Telegraphhas in fact revealed that he lost as much as ten kilos of body weight during the off-season. However, the story is more complicated than that and is also linked to the not always very healthy eating habits of the 25-year-old from Hasselt.

    Max’s diet
In fact, the young Red Bull star revealed that he first put on a few extra pounds during the winter and then that he particularly tightened his belt to be in top form at the start of the new season, in which he will go in search of his third consecutive world title. “All year round I feel below what would be my normal weight – explained Verstappen, underlining how usually his weight gain during the winter break is around 5 kg – then I give myself a month to eat and drink what I want and have some fun“. To get back in perfect shape this year, the orange champion lost 10 kg in about six weeks before the tests.

    New motorhome
The #1 of the Milton Keynes stable also explained that he doesn’t have particular difficulties in returning, even drastically, to his ‘race’ weight: “I like to hurt myself a little“, he joked. But the one indicated by the scales is not the only novelty that will accompany Verstappen in his 2023. In fact, the Dutchman has also revealed that this year he will use one of his motorhomes during the European Grands Prix. “So I can stay focused during the race weekends – has explained – and maybe even stay in bed a little longer in the morning. But above all it is a matter of privacy”he concluded.

  • Djokovic in the legend: he surpasses the Graf, 378 weeks as number 1

Djokovic in the legend: he surpasses the Graf, 378 weeks as number 1

    [ad_1]

Seven years as first in the standings for the Serbian who also leaves the German behind: he is the player who has been in the lead for the longest time

And in the end the unbeatable Steffi Graf was beaten. It seemed unimaginable a few years ago that anyone could even come close to the incredible 377 weeks as world number one of “Our Lady of the Straight”, and it took another alien, Novak Djokovic, to break such a record. From today, Monday 27 February, the Serbian is in fact the human being with the most weeks at the top of the ranking, whether it is ATP or WTA, a good 378. Seven years up there, number one of the number ones, where no one had ever reached.

    The new challenge

For those who live on goals like this, for those who feed on this food, like Djokovic, this is a goal that will give further fuel to their inexhaustible tank. This isn’t just the latest record broken, and it won’t be the last either. That of the slams, 22, so far only equaled, in company with Rafael Nadal, the next goal, perhaps the most ambitious one. But the list is already long. Very long. Seven times Nole has finished the season number one in the world, more than Federer and Sampras, and is the oldest to do so (34 years and 7 months), and has been at the top of the rankings for at least one week in 12 years. In Grand Slams, at the age of 20 years and 250 days, he was the youngest tennis player to reach the semifinals of each of the four tournaments. No one has played more slam finals than him, 33. He is the player who has won the most consecutive matches in the big four, 30, and he is the only tennis player in history to have reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for 13 consecutive years. No one has won more slam titles on hard courts (13), the only one to have won a slam seven times (Australia, 10, and Wimbledon, 7), and he is the tennis player who has participated in the most slam tournaments as a No. 1 seed (30). Even in his 1000m his records are monstrous. Djokovic is the only player in history to have won all 9 tournaments in the category, and is in first place all-time by number of successes (38), ahead of Nadal and Federer, with the record for finals played (56).

    How many records

Holds all-time record for most consecutive wins (31) in Masters 1000 tournaments and is the player with the best winning percentage in Masters Series/ATP Tour Masters 1000 tournament history over a year 96.875% (2011) with 31 games won and only one defeat. He has won the ATP Finals 6 times (tied with Roger Federer), but Djokovic is the only tennis player in history to have won the year-end Masters for four consecutive years (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015). He leads the Open Era all-time in winning percentage (83.51 with 1043 wins and 206 losses), ahead of Nadal (82.98). Finally, he is the tennis player who has earned the most in the history of tennis with prize money, ahead of Nadal (second) and Federer (third), with almost 167 million euros earned in his career. A cannibal resume, and few times in history there has been one, in any sport, like Novak Djokovic. And he’s still hungry. Very hungry.
