Bullish on India, Tim Cook to unveil Apple retail stores in Mumbai, Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As Apple firms up its plans to put India on its global manufacturing and retail map, the company’s CEO Tim Cook will be in India next week to inaugurate Apple’s brick-and-mortar stores in Mumbai and Delhi.

Reliable sources told IANS that Cook will inaugurate Apple’s own branded retail stores — at Jio World Drive Mall in Mumbai and at Select CityWalk mall in Saket, Delhi — that will be the first for the tech giant which has doubled down on its India growth plans.

Apple set another all-time revenue record for the India market in the quarter that ended December 31, 2022.

In the analysts’ call after posting its quarterly results, Cook said, “India is a hugely exciting market for us and a major focus.

“We brought the online store there in 2020. We will soon bring Apple Retail there,” Cook had announced.

“I’m very bullish on India,” he added.

According to the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), Apple’s ‘Make in India’ smartphone now constitutes 50 per cent of total exports.

Reports surfaced earlier this year that Cook-led Apple will quickly shift some of its China manufacturing to India and Vietnam in the next 2-3 years.

India is likely to produce 45-50 per cent of Apple’s iPhones by 2027, at par with China, where 80-85 per cent of iPhones were produced in 2022, according to estimates.

India accounted for 10-15 per cent of iPhones’ overall production capacity at the end of 2022.

Apple became the first smartphone player in India to have exported $1 billion worth iPhones in the month of December.

It currently manufactures iPhones 12, 13, 14 and 14 Plus in the country.

As Apple gears up to throw open the gates of its first branded retail store in India this month, its physical stores have left an indelible impression on millions worldwide.

For millions of Indians, visiting an Apple Store in the country will be a delightful experience. Those who have a constant yearning to be ‘delighted’ at Apple Stores at world-famous tourist spots, India will soon be on the Apple’s retail global map.

  • Akhilesh to unveil Kanshi Ram statue; set to strike at BSP’s Dalit base in UP

Akhilesh to unveil Kanshi Ram statue; set to strike at BSP’s Dalit base in UP

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Having given up all hopes of an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) is now going all out to woo the Dalits.

The party will use the upcoming Ambedkar Jayanti to kick off its campaign.

SP president Akhilesh Yadav will unveil a statue of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) founder Kanshi Ram at a function in Rae Bareli on April 3.

    MS Education Academy

According to party sources, in his address, Akhilesh will recall BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s alliance with SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav in 1993 and underline the need for another ‘coming together’ of the forces in the present political scenario.

SP national general secretary Swami Prasad Maurya said, “The BSP today has strayed away from the path shown by its founder Kanshi Ram and Babasaheb Ambedkar. There is an urgent need for the followers of Kanshi Ram and Mulayam Singh Yadav to join hands once again for nation building. It is time to carry forward their idea of social justice that the two leaders had first shared in 1993.”

According to sources, the SP leadership feels that an OBC-Dalit combination, in at least a dozen Lok Sabha constituencies, has the ability to be a game changer on the strength of its numbers.

In the political circles, the move is being seen as SP’s latest strategy to win over non-Jatav Dalits who had sided with the BJP in the 2022 Assembly polls and also make a dent in the BSP’s Jatav vote base.

The party’s broad frame of this strategy was also noticeable in the recently constituted national executive committee of the party. Where 62 members in the committee — around 35 per cent — were from non-Yadav OBC communities particularly from electorally influential communities like Pasi, Kurmi, Rajbhar and Nishad.

A total of six members in the national executive committee list were Dalits.

Besides, of late, Akhilesh has been seen making a conscious effort to promote Ayodhya MLA Avadhesh Prasad as the Dalit face of the party.

The nine-term MLA, who currently represents the Milkipur Assembly constituency of Ayodhya, not only shares a seat next to party president Akhilesh Yadav in the state Assembly but was also seen sharing the dais with Yadav during the two-day party’s national executive meet in Kolkata recently.

Akhilesh even tweeted a selfie with Awadhesh Prasad and Shivpal Yadav on board a flight to Kolkata, to underline the growing stature of the Milkipur MLA in the party.

His rising stature in SP is being seen as Akhilesh’s attempt to send across the message that the party is willing to give a special status to Dalits — who were till now seen as a dedicated and exclusive voter base of the Bahujan Samaj Party.

The SP, which had floated Babasaheb Vahini on Ambedkar Jayanti in 2021, now plans to strengthen the organisation within the party.

The Vahini has been asked to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti in a grand manner in all districts.

  • Treasury, regulators unveil rescue for bank depositors

Treasury, regulators unveil rescue for bank depositors

    [ad_1]

    banks inflation 73637

“The U.S. banking system remains resilient and on a solid foundation, in large part due to reforms that were made after the financial crisis,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Fed Chair Jerome Powell and FDIC Chair Martin Gruenberg said in a statement. “Those reforms combined with today’s actions demonstrate our commitment to take the necessary steps to ensure that depositors’ savings remain safe.”

The dramatic moves marked an attempt by the Biden administration and regulators to contain possible financial contagion triggered by Silicon Valley Bank’s sudden collapse on Friday.

Over the weekend, the FDIC collected bids on the assets of Silicon Valley Bank in a race to offer a path forward for businesses whose funds are stuck at the failed lender, according to three industry sources familiar with the matter.

It could provide a mechanism for thousands of venture-backed startups and health care businesses, which had been customers of the defunct Northern California bank, to recover their money.

A bank run sparked by uncertainty over SVB’s finances wiped out more than $42 billion of deposits from its balance sheet last week, prompting California regulators and the FDIC to intervene.

The collapse of the bank, which was seized by FDIC last week, has heightened fears of instability at small and mid-sized financial institutions.

Lawmakers and industry groups have been pressing the FDIC — as well as Treasury, the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency — to produce a plan as soon as possible that might offer guidance to depositors on how to proceed.

Prominent venture capitalists and startup executives have warned that they’ll be unable to make payroll if the federal government doesn’t offer a dividend to the bank’s uninsured depositors — whose accounts total more than $150 billion. FDIC insurance only backstops individual deposits up to $250,000.

  • Microsoft to unveil GPT-4 next week with AI videos

Microsoft to unveil GPT-4 next week with AI videos

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Microsoft plans to release GPT-4 as early as next week, with the ability to create AI-generated videos from simple text prompts.

Andreas Braun, Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft Germany, recently confirmed that GPT-4 will be unveiled next week at an event called — AI in Focus — Digital Kickoff, reports Windows Central.

“We will introduce GPT-4 next week, where we have multimodal models that will offer completely different possibilities – for example, videos,” Braun was quoted as saying.

The report said that GPT-4 is the next iteration of OpenAI’s Large Language Model (LLM), and it should be significantly more powerful than GPT-3.5, which powers the current version of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT and other GPT-3.5-powered technologies are currently limited to text-based responses.

However, Braun’s comments imply that this may change with the release of GPT-4.

The multimodal models of the LLM could pave the way for video production and other types of content, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the AI-powered Bing search engine has surpassed 100 million daily active users, as ChatGPT’s integration into Bing has helped the company grow its usage within a month like never before.

Its rival Google Search engine has more than 1 billion daily active users.

Roughly one-third of daily Bing preview users are using AI chat daily.

  • Biden to unveil tax hikes on wealthy Americans, corporations

Biden to unveil tax hikes on wealthy Americans, corporations

    [ad_1]

Washington: US President Joe Biden will make a renewed push to overhaul the nation’s tax code and dramatically raise the rates paid by corporations and wealthy Americans, the media reported.

The President is expected to lay out the tax hikes on Thursday as part of his budget blueprint for federal spending in fiscal 2024, which begins in October. The higher taxes would likely be borne by Wall Street and the top sliver of US households, Fox Business reported.

Biden previewed some proposals during his State of the Union address in February, when he called for steeper taxes on billionaires and floated quadrupling the current 1per cent levy on corporate stock buybacks.

“I’m a capitalist. But just pay your fair share,” he said in the speech. “And I think a lot of you at home agree with me that our present tax system is simply unfair.”

The so-called billionaire’s tax would impose a 20 percent rate on both income and unrealized capital gains, including stock and property of US households worth more than $100 million, or about 0.01 percent of Americans, Fox Business reported.

Households that were already paying 20 percent will not be required to pay an additional tax.

The rate may ultimately be even higher at 25 percent, according to a report from Bloomberg News, citing a White House official familiar with the plan.

On top of that, the White House introduced a plan this week to raise payroll taxes from 3.8 percent to 5 percent on Americans earning more than $400,000 in a bid to keep Medicare solvent for at least another quarter-century, Fox Business reported.

Another aspect of the plan would apply to business income, in addition to investment, wages and self-employment income, representing a change from the initial surtax levied when applied under the Affordable Care Act.

India, France, UAE unveil plan for cooperation under trilateral framework

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India, France and the UAE on Saturday unveiled an ambitious roadmap for cooperation in areas of defence, nuclear energy and technology under a trilateral framework.

After a phone conversation among their foreign ministers, a joint statement said the three sides agreed that the trilateral initiative will serve as a forum to promote the design and execution of cooperation projects in the fields of energy, with a focus on solar and nuclear energy.

“It was acknowledged that defence is an area of close cooperation between the three countries. Therefore, efforts will be undertaken to further promote compatibility, and joint development and co-production, whilst seeking out avenues for further collaboration and training between the three countries’ defence forces,” it said.

The foreign ministers noted that the trilateral initiative will serve as a platform to expand cooperation between their countries’ development agencies on sustainable projects.

The three foreign ministers met on September 19 last year for the first time in a trilateral format on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In the meeting, they agreed to establish a formal trilateral cooperation initiative to expand cooperation in various fields of mutual interest.

“It is in this context that a phone call between the three ministers was held today to adopt a roadmap for the implementation of this initiative,” the statement said.
