SRINAGAR: Union Minister for Roads, Highways and Transport, Nitin Gadkari Tuesday said that on the 45 km stretch of Srinagar-Jammu highway, five tunnels will come up of which one has been inaugurated while work on other four is going on. He said once all the tunnels will be completed, the travel distance on Srinagarr-Jammu  highway, the life-life between J&K and the rest of the country will reduce to just three hours.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar, Gadkari, who was accompanied by MoS PMO Dr Jitendera Singh, said that of the total 245 km stretch of Srinagar-Jammu highway, there will be five tunnels coming up on 45 km stretch. “Today, we have achieved a breakthrough on one tunnel and next three will be completed by March next year. The fifth tunnel is a bit difficult and that may take a bit of time,” the Union Minister said.

He said that a resort will also come up on the highway where Kashmiri handicrafts will be showcased. He said once the highway and tunnels will be ready, the road will get connected with the Katra and then to Delhi. “This way, J&K will get connected with the rest of the country,” he said.

On Monday, Gadkari had stated that in the next ten years, JK roads will match with the United States. “We aim that the Srinagar to Jammu distance will be covered in three hours, Katra to Delhi in six hours and Delhi to Srinagar in 8 hours,” he said, adding that better roads will help socio-economic growth of the J&K UT and generate lots of employment through tourism. “Tourism is set to increase four times once we have quality roads and highways,” he said. SRINAGAR: The commuters are all set to have a safe journey along Srinagar-Jammu highway by the end of March month as the authorities here have said that the two important tunnels and a bridge in Ramban district of Jammu region will be made functional this month.

Jammu-Srinagar national highway is the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country.

Quoting officials, news agency KNO reported that work on several projects in Ramban district is in progress.

“800-metre-long T5 tunnel on Panthyal stretch of the highway is set to be thrown open by March 15 while Jaiswal bridge on Udhampur-Ramban section to be made operational by March 20 and Kunfer tunnel is also expected to be completed by March 31, besides double lane of Ramban flyover and Banihal bypass to be completed by April 15 this year,” they said.

Two tunnels, having a total length of 1,680 meters, would put an end to the ‘phantom of shooting stones’ and traffic disruptions along the stretch, officials said.

The twin tunnels will not only reduce the travel time of commuters, but will also completely bypass the difficult landslides and shooting stone prone areas along the stretch, officials said.

Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, Mussarat Islam said all the projects on Jammu Srinagar national highway will be completed by stipulated time frame. “Work on the 800-meter T-5 Tunnel to bypass Panthyal stretch, which is vulnerable to shooting stones on highway, has been accelerated so that it becomes operational by March 15, 2023”, he said.

Mussarat said work is also in progress for double laning of Ramban flyover and Banihal bypass which will be completed by April 15 this year. After the competition of these projects, people travelling on Jammu-Srinagar highway would be able have a safe journey, he added.

  • Excavation of Khellani tunnel’s 1st tube in Doda completed before deadline

Excavation of Khellani tunnel’s 1st tube in Doda completed before deadline

DODA/JAMMU: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) has completed the excavation of the first tube of the strategic Khellani tunnel along NH 244, an alternative road connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country.

The work on the 1.574 km tunnel, which is crucial for the Sudhmahadev- Goha–Khalleni – Chhatroo–Khanabal highway project, started on March 25, 2021, to provide alternative all-weather connectivity and shorten the distance between Doda and Kishtwar districts by 30 km, an official said.

“The breakthrough on the Khellani project was achieved on February 24 but because of the loose strata, we are in the process of stabilising it. Within another 10 days, the work will be completed and in the next 7 to 8 months, this tunnel will be made motorable,” senior site engineer, NHIDCL, Harjeet Singh told PTI.

He said the work on the second tube is also going on at a brisk pace and if everything goes as planned, the breakthrough is expected by April-end.

The Khellani tunnel, constructed at a cost of Rs 431.28 crore, will bypass the slide-prone Batote-Pul Doda which has already been declared “unsafe” due to the reservoir of Baglihar hydroelectric project.

In 2008, around half a-kilometre patch of the highway between Batote and Pul Doda washed away due to capillary action caused by Baglihar pondage, the officials said.

The management staff of APCO Infra-Tech Private Limited, which is the contractor of the Khellani tunnel project, are also positive to complete the construction of the tunnel in time after the breakthrough of one of the twin tubes of the tunnel.

“We started the work on this tunnel in March 2021 and we have completed above 85 per cent of the work and have already successfully made the breakthrough of the 1st tube. There are maximum chances that we will complete the work within time,” Assistant General Manager, Khellani Tunnel Project, Vinay Kumar Singh said.

He said the road has been planned to reduce the travelling time for the inhabitants of the Doda and Kishtwar districts and boost the economy of the area besides providing an alternate all-weather road between Jammu and Srinagar.

Doda district Vice President of BJP, Sanjay Saraf credited the local member parliament and Union Minister Jitendra Singh for his efforts in sanctioning and fast-tracking the work on the project.

“This road will change the fortunes of the people of Doda and Kishtwar as the tourism industry emerging as the mainstay of the economy of the region will surely get a major boost because visitors no longer will be compelled to ply on a dangerous and treacherous road, instead they can enjoy the shorter and safer journey,” Saraf said.–(PTI)
