Over 10,000 Syrian refugees return to homeland after quake: Turkish defence minister

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Turkey said on Sunday that at least 10,633 Syrian refugees in the country have returned to their homeland voluntarily after the devastating earthquakes that hit southern Turkey earlier this month.

“Our Syrian brothers, who lost their families and places of stay in the earthquake, returned to their lands voluntarily,” Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said during his visit to the military border outposts in the quake-hit southern province of Hatay, Xinhua News Agency reported quoting Anadolu Agency.

The minister refuted the allegations that Syrians were flooding into the Turkish border after the massive earthquakes which also hit northern Syria, the semi-official Anadolu Agency reported.

“These claims are completely untrue. There is no crossing from the border gate or the borderline. We received information from the relevant authorities and conducted on-site investigations. Contrary to the claim that there is an intense crossing to Turkey, they stated that Syrian citizens pass from Turkey to Syria in one direction,” the Anadolu quoted Akar as saying.

Turkey hosts nearly 3.5 million Syrian refugees that fled their country after a civil war erupted in 2011. Nearly half of the refugees have been taking shelter in southern Turkey which was recently hit by devastating quakes that have caused tremendous destruction in the region.

More than 46,000 people have died in Turkey and Syria since twin 7.7- and 7.6-magnitude earthquakes struck the Turkish southern province of Kahramanmaras on February 6.

Heart-wrenching videos have emerged post the two devastating earthquakes that struck Syria and Turkey on Monday, February 6, leaving tens of thousands dead.

In another video clip that emerged rescue teams can be seen pulling a little girl from the arms of her deceased sister under the rubble of their home in the city of Afrin, north of Aleppo, in Syria.

The clip indicated that the child kept holding her sister’s hand and embracing her to protect her from the rubble until she breathed her last.

It is noteworthy that despite the continuation of the search for survivors under the rubble of the devastating earthquake, the hopes of finding survivors eight days after the disaster have begun to diminish.

The number of victims rose to nearly 35,000 on Sunday, amid warnings from the World Health Organization of an imminent danger threatening more than 5 million people due to the earthquake.

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, feared that the death toll in the two countries would exceed 40,000.

Syrian health sector suffers from US sanctions: Minister

    [ad_1]

Damascus: Syria’s Health Minister has said that the Syrian health sector is reeling under pressure from the US sanctions.

Speaking at a press conference, Hassan al-Ghabbash on Thursday stressed that the suffering of the Syrian medical sector is not a result of the recent massive earthquake that hit the country on Monday but rather the Western sanctions imposed on Syria for 12 years.

He also stated that the death toll from the earthquake rose to 1,347 and the injuries to 2,295, Xinhua news agency reported.

Al-Ghabbash stressed that from the first moments of the earthquake, the Syrian Health Ministry’s emergency room was mobilised to coordinate the response and send ambulances, mobile clinics, and supply trucks to the most affected provinces.

The hospitals and health centres are working at their maximum capacity to provide medical services, he said, adding that one of the most important priorities and challenges is to continue to provide health services in shelters and prepare for any emergency.

“We are determined to provide services to Syrian citizens despite all the circumstances and challenges, and the Syrian state has largely succeeded,” he said.

Al-Ghabbash added that the shortfall caused by Western sanctions would be made up through the concerted efforts of private sector institutions, trade unions, non-governmental organisations and civil society.

The Minister called on the UN, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other international organisations to provide assistance to Syria to deal with the disaster.

UN says nearly 70% of Syrian population was in need of humanitarian aid before quake

    [ad_1]

Damascus: A UN joint statement has said that nearly 70 per cent of the population was in need of humanitarian assistance even before the massive 7.8-magnitude quake struck the country devastated by the 12-year prolonged crisis.

The statement was issued on Tuesday by the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator ad interim for Syria, El-Mostafa Benlamlih, and the Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, Muhannad Hadi.

“We express our sincere condolences to the victims’ families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. We stand in solidarity with the people of Syria and Turkey during this time of need. Urgent support is needed to be able to respond to all those who have been affected in this terrible tragedy,” Benlamlih was quoted as saying.

Syria’s ongoing crisis has destroyed much of its public infrastructure and left millions of people in need of humanitarian assistance.

The war-torn nation is also grappling with an economic collapse and a severe water, electricity and fuel shortages, said the statement.

“We appeal to all donor partners to provide the assistance necessary to alleviate suffering,” said Hadi.

“This tragedy will have a devastating impact on many already vulnerable families who struggle to provide for their loved ones on a daily basis,” he added.

The UN and humanitarian partners have said that they are currently focusing on immediate needs, including food, shelter, non-food items and medicine.

In Syria, at least 2,032 people have died and another 3,849 people have been injured as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck on Monday.

Aleppo, Lattakia, Hama, Idlib and Tartus were the most affected.

  • Syrian refugees cost Lebanon over $40bn since 2011: FM

Syrian refugees cost Lebanon over $40bn since 2011: FM

    [ad_1]

Beirut: The displacement of Syrians has cost Lebanon more than $40 billion since the civil war broke out in the Arab nation in 2011, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said.

The minister made the remarks during his meeting with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka in Beirut, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Lebanon’s hosting of a big number of Syrian refugees is beyond the country’s capacity,” Bou Habib said.

The Foreign Minister also called on the international community to recognize and appreciate Lebanon’s contribution to the world by taking in millions of Syrian refugees.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, Lebanon is currently facing its worst socioeconomic crisis in decades and hosts the highest number of refugees per capita and per square kilometer worldwide.

The government estimates 1.5 million Syrian refugees and 13,715 refugees of other nationalities.

Ninety percent of Syrian refugees are living in extreme poverty, with the majority of them settled in the Bekaa region.

While prices are skyrocketing due to a severe economic crisis, almost half of the Lebanese and 2/3 of the 1.5 million Syrian refugees are food insecure.

Some 90 percent of Syrians, 73 percent of Palestinian refugees, and over 50 percent of Lebanese households currently need assistance.

Lebanon has struggled to deal with emergencies like the Beirut port blast, Covid-19, and a recently declared cholera outbreak.
