Suspended BJP MLA Raja Singh alleges terror plot to target him

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Suspended BJP MLA T. Raja Singh has claimed that a terrorist outfit planned to target him during the Ram Navami procession in Hyderabad on Thursday.

He posted on social media a letter from a resident of the old city of Hyderabad to the commissioner of police claiming that a terrorist planned to hurl bombs at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, state BJP office and Ram Navami procession on March 31.

The letter, written by Uma Maheswari, alleged that the main target of the terrorist working for Bahrain-based Mukhtar Brigades is Raja Singh, a member of Telangana Legislative Assembly from Goshamahal constituency.

Raja Singh, who is scheduled to lead the procession, asked state home Minister Mahmood Ali, Director General of Police and Police Commissioner if they verified the claims made in the letter. “Update us abt this as Lakhs of Ram Bhakts joins this procession,” tweeted Raja Singh.

The controversial MLA had last month lodged a complaint with the police stating that he was receiving threatening calls from Pakistan-based phone numbers.

“I have been receiving threatening calls every day. I have given written complaints many times to the police department when the callers are aggressive and abusive but no action has been taken. Not even one person has been arrested who threatened me as of now,” he had said.

Following the MLA’s claims, police had assigned him a new bullet-resistant vehicle.

The MLA was arrested by the police in August last year for making certain comments hurting religious sentiments of Muslims. He was sent to jail on August 25 after the Hyderabad police commissioner had invoked PD Act. BJP had also suspended him from the party.

Raja Singh was released from jail on November 9, after spending two months in jail following his arrest under the Preventive Detention Act.

The Telangana High Court had set aside the police commissioner’s order and released the MLA on bail but directed him not to make any speech or comment which created hatred among communities.

  • Pakistan: SHO suspended for assaulting Hindus for eating during Ramadan

Pakistan: SHO suspended for assaulting Hindus for eating during Ramadan

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A police officer in Pakistan’s Sindh was suspended after he tortured, harassed, manhandled and arrested Hindu shopkeepers for allegedly “violating the Ramadan Ordinance” by eating, Pakistan media reported.

In a video that went viral on social media, Kabil Bhayo, the SHO of Khanpur police station, was seen roaming the Ghotki district with a stick in his hand, using it to hit shopkeepers, including Hindu men, who were reportedly preparing biryani for delivery orders in the local market, Express Tribune reported.

“I swear that I belong to the Hindu community, and he is taking away food. We do not run the dining service indoors during Ramadan,” a man who was arrested by the police said.

However, the SHO publicly forced the Hindu restaurant owner to take an oath on his sacred book. The officer arrested more than one dozen people after physically assaulting them, Express Tribune reported.

After the video went viral, the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) took notice of it and wrote to the DIG of Sukkur and SSP of Ghotki to take action against the police officer.

“The act is a violation of fundamental rights of citizens regardless of their religion and beliefs and goes against Article 20 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which guarantees the freedom to profess and manage religious institutions,” a letter issued by the SHRC stated.

It added that the SHO’s behaviour was against the landmark judgment by former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani on minority rights, issued on June 19, 2014.

It is pertinent to note that the Ramadan Ordinance states that only people who are obligated to fast under the tenants of Islam are barred from eating, drinking and smoking in public places during fasting hours in the month of Ramadan, Express Tribune reported.

  • Cops involved in resisting Islamabad’s Aurat March suspended: Pak Minister

Cops involved in resisting Islamabad’s Aurat March suspended: Pak Minister

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Police in Islamabad on Wednesday apologised and suspended its personnel involved in baton-charging a women’s rally held here in the Pakistani capital to mark the International Women’s Day.

The Aurat March (Women Day March) rally was organised at the National Press Club in Islamabad as part of an event held across the country to celebrate with the rest of the world the International Women’s Day to recognise the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Video clips circulating on social media showed police using force against women participants of the protest march in capital Islamabad, sparking anger.

The police personnel involved in baton-charging the participants of the Women’s March have been suspended, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said.

“Moreover, other persons responsible for misbehaviour are also being identified, and proper action will be taken against them too,” he tweeted.

Inspector General Islamabad Akbar Nasir Khan took notice of the incident and sought a report to identify those involved in the violence.

“Islamabad police apologises for this incident,” the force’s official Twitter handle said. “The Islamabad police stands with the participants of the march for the struggle and protection of women’s rights,” the statement said.

Earlier, Interior Minister Sanaullah said he has noted the behaviour of the police personnel and summoned Islamabad police chief. He said “strict legal action” would be taken against those responsible for “this mistreatment”.

“I have taken strict notice of the behaviour meted out to the participants of the women’s march in Islamabad. The IG Police Islamabad has been summoned, and strict legal action will be taken against those responsible for this mistreatment,” he tweeted.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), which is an independent body, also condemned the use of force by the Islamabad police. “Women have as much right to peaceful assembly as any citizen. The police are supposed to provide security to the marchers, not to resort to violence against peaceful demonstrators,” the commission said.

Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman also condemned the Islamabad police’s action against the Aurat March. “The Islamabad police had no business baton-charging a small peaceful procession,” she tweeted and added that an inquiry would be held to punish those responsible for it.

Talking about the use of force, Punjrush, one of the organisers of the march, explained that transgender persons were performing when police charged at the protesters, causing some of them to get “crushed”.

“Then they started pushing us so we started to push back and then they started fighting and we started fighting and it just got confusing,” she said.

Rallies are held every year on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, upsetting the conservative elements in the country.

Earlier today, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected a petition filed by Amun Taraqqi Party (ATP) chief Muhammad Faiq Shah who had challenged the permission given to organisers to hold a women rally.
