Turkish police detain 524 suspects in anti-narcotics operation

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Police in Turkey detained at least 524 suspects in an extensive anti-drug trafficking operation carried out across 52 provinces, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said.

In coordination with the Financial Crimes Investigation Board and Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the police traced the financial operators of the network which composed of 598 suspects, including the managers, salesmen, dealers, and manufacturers for about a year, and nabbed 524 of them, Soylu told reporters here.

The Minister said that the increasing number of anti-narcotics operations in the country yielded results and cut off heroin trafficking routes through Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey, reports Xinhua news agency.

“In other words, its route shifted from Turkey to another point as a result of our detentions,” he explained.

While there were 941 direct drug-related deaths in Turkey in 2016, this figure had dropped to 270 by 2022, Soylu added.

Located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, Turkey has been grappling with international drug smuggling for many years.

There are currently nearly 126,000 drug manufacturers and smugglers imprisoned in the country.

SI Scam: Court denies bail to three suspects in SI recruitment scam case

The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Court turned down the bail requests of three people who were accused of the JK Service Selection Board Police sub-inspector exam scam.

Ashsish Yadav, Sunrender Singh, and Pawan Kumar were in jail because they were suspected of taking part in the well-known SI hire scam. After hearing both sides, Second Additional Sessions Judge Jammu Balbir Lal Jaswal turned down their bail requests.

The court said that they are accused of leaking the paper of the J&K Police Sub Inspector, which hurt the future of young people. The court said that the accused man’s actions can’t be compared to scams that involve millions of Rupees. Instead, they are an example of an organised crime that hurts the public as a whole. After figuring out how bad the situation was, the court said that if the accused had been successful in their plan, unqualified candidates would have been able to get top jobs. This would have hurt the qualified candidates and deprived society of qualified officers.

The court said that the suspects knew what they were doing and did it on purpose to make money for themselves, no matter what effect it had on the students and their parents. The court also said that if bail was given to these criminals while the investigation was still going on, it would hurt the feelings of the people as a whole and slow down the investigation.

The court didn’t say what it thought about the case itself, and it said that its comments were only meant to help with the question of bail. The accused committed a major crime that could get them up to 7 years in prison, and there was no reason to consider their bail at this point.

  • Massive search ops in Hoshiarpur after some suspects abandon car

Massive search ops in Hoshiarpur after some suspects abandon car

    [ad_1]

Hoshiarpur: In the wake of the Punjab Police being on high alert after radical preacher Amritpal Singh escaped its dragnet, a massive search operation was launched in a Hoshiarpur village late on Tuesday night after some suspects abandoned their vehicle following a chase.

A police team was chasing a car from Phagwara after it suspected that fugitive Amritpal and his aide could be travelling in that vehicle, sources said.

The occupants of the vehicle abandoned the car near Gurdwara Bhai Chanchal Singh in Marnaian village here and fled, they said.

A cordon and search operation has been launched in and around the village while checkposts and barricades have been raised on the roads to nab the suspects.

Amritpal Singh remains untraceable since a police crackdown against him and members of his pro-Khalistan ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit on March 18, about three weeks after he and his supporters stormed into the Ajnala police station near Amritsar to secure the release of an arrested man.

The preacher escaped the police dragnet in Jalandhar district on March 18, switching vehicles and changing appearances.

He and his associates have been booked under several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.

A new video of Amritpal Singh with his key aide Papalpreet Singh surfaced on social media on Tuesday, showing the pro-Khalistan preacher without a turban and wearing a mask.

The undated CCTV footage, said to be from a market in Delhi, showed the fugitive walking down a street wearing dark glasses. Behind him, Papalpreet Singh could be seen walking with a bag.

There is no official word from Punjab Police on the fresh footage.

A senior Delhi Police official said they are probing whether the persons seen in the video are Amritpal Singh and his aide.

  • IIT B student death: Family says he faced caste discrimination; suspects ‘murder’

IIT B student death: Family says he faced caste discrimination; suspects ‘murder’

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad/Mumbai: The family of an IIT-Bombay student who allegedly committed suicide has claimed he faced discrimination at the premier institute for belonging to a Scheduled Caste community and suspected foul play in his death, while the Mumbai police on Wednesday said they have started recording statements of his hostel mates as part of their probe into the case.

In Mumbai, the police citing initial probe said the student, Darshan Solanki (18), had spoken to his father in Ahmedabad for around 30 minutes before ending his life on Sunday, but did not mention anything about facing caste discrimination at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

The IIT Bombay administration on Tuesday rejected charges of caste bias in the institute and said initial inputs from the deceased’s friends suggested there was no discrimination.

A senior police official involved in the probe said the student’s parents had not raised any objection on investigation or expressed doubt over their son’s suicide when they came to Mumbai on Monday to take possession of his body.

However, in Ahmedabad the family of the student claimed he faced discrimination at the premier institute for belonging to an SC community and that there was a strong possibility that he was “murdered”.

Darshan Solanki, a first-year student of BTech (chemical), died allegedly after jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the IIT on Sunday (Feb 12).

His family members, who live in the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad city, claimed though Darshan Solanki faced “discrimination for being a Dalit”, he could not have taken his own life.

“I strongly believe that my son was murdered. Hours before his death, he had called us but he talked normally and gave no indication that he was under any tension. However, when he came home during Makar Sankranti (in mid-January), he informed his aunt that other students were keeping distance from him. They were upset because Darshan made such progress (in academics),” said his mother Tarlikaben Solanki.

The deceased student’s father Rameshbhai Solanki alleged the institute as well as hospital authorities had tried to cover up the matter and performed a post-mortem on the body even before he reached Mumbai.

“I do not think it was a case of suicide. If you fall from the seventh floor, you will sustain many injuries. But, when I saw my son’s face after the post-mortem, I did not see any injuries. How is that possible? Moreover, the PM (post-mortem) was done in a haste and that too without our permission. I was allowed to see only his face after the PM,” claimed Rameshbhai Solanki.

Darshan Solanki’s sister Jahnvi said the IIT-B management kept changing its stand about the reasons behind her brother’s death.

“His body was not shown to my parents, neither before nor after the PM. Earlier, the institute told us that he fell down the stairs. Then, the principal told us that my brother jumped from the building. Do they think we are fools? It seems that my brother was murdered,” said Jahnvi Solanki.

The late student’s aunt Divyaben said Darshan Solanki once told her other pupils had started maintaining distance from him upon learning he belonged to an SC community.

“In January, he told me that other students were jealous of him. They used to ask Darshan how come you are studying for free while we have to spend a lot of money?’. They used to taunt him and ask him how he secured admission. Darshan was harassed there. But, he could not have taken his life due to such tension. It seems he was first murdered and then thrown off the building,” she claimed.

However, the Mumbai police said Darshan Solanki’s parents, who visited the IIT campus in suburban Powai after the incident, in their initial statements had not raised any objection on probe or expressed doubt over their son’s suicide.

Darshan Solanki had spoken for half an hour with his father before ending his life, but during the conversation he had not said anything about facing discrimination in the institute, said the police official.

He said statements of more than a dozen persons have been recorded so far as part of probe to ascertain what led the student to take the extreme step.

Darshan Solanki had told his father he will be visiting home on February 15, said the official.

“The police are thoroughly investigating the case and each and every aspect will be examined to know the exact cause of the suicide,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale visited the IIT B campus and demanded a thorough probe into Darshan Solanki’s death.

Athawale said Darshan Solanki had called his father on Sunday and informed him that except for one paper, all his other first semester exams went well.

Meanwhile, a student collective at the IIT Bombay demanded the resignation of the institute’s director in the backdrop of the alleged suicide and allegations he was facing caste discrimination.

The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) also sought that a report of the SC/ST Cell of the IIT Bombay, which it claimed talks about lack of institutional support for Dalit and tribal students in the campus, be made public.

In a statement, the APPSC, said, “We demand resignation of the institute director in the light of these new facts and hope the administration will start the much needed learning process, at least now. Data prepared by the SC/ST Cell points towards the lack of institutional support for SC/ST students at the IIT B.”

The student body alleged the IIT-B administration has not appointed any SC/ST counsellors even after its complaints and said this shows blatant disregards towards the pupils.

However, the institute on Tuesday said it takes utmost precautions to make the campus as inclusive as possible and it has a zero tolerance for any discrimination by faculty.

Caste identity is never disclosed to any one (whether students or faculty) once the admission is done and the institute sensitises students to not seek proxy information such as ranks in entrance exams, it said in a statement.

The institute gives strong warnings against discrimination right from the time students enter the IIT campus. While no steps can be 100 per cent effective, discrimination by students, if at all it occurs, is an exception, the statement said.

  • U.S. detains 4 suspects in slain Haitian president probe

U.S. detains 4 suspects in slain Haitian president probe

    [ad_1]

    ap23045749202982

“It is extremely important to bring [them] to justice,” said Markenzy Lapointe, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. “We will deliver justice in the courtroom.”

A squad of former Colombian soldiers hired by CTU are among suspects who carried out the July 2021 attack, which authorities say originally was envisioned to be a coup rather than an assassination. The motives and ultimate masterminds of the attack remain unclear.

Tama Kudman, Veintemilla’s attorney, told The Associated Press that he would plead not guilty to both charges.

Claude Joseph, who was serving as prime minister when Moïse was killed, cheered the announcement. “Justice must prevail,” he tweeted, along with a picture of a U.S. government news release on Tuesday’s announcement.

Earlier this month, the president’s widow, Martine Moïse, who was shot during the attack but survived, called for the creation of a special U.N. tribunal to investigate the assassination, saying the case has faced obstacles for 19 months.

“The killers are out there,” she said.

A total of 11 suspects are now in U.S. custody, including key players like James Solages and Joseph Vincent, two Haitian-Americans who were among the first arrested after Moïse was shot 12 times at his private home in July 2021. Other suspects include Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a pastor and failed businessman whose associates have suggested he was duped by the real masterminds who have yet to be arrested.

Authorities have said that the original plan was to detain Moïse, force him onto a plane and whisk him to an unidentified location, but that plot crumbled when suspects couldn’t find a plane or sufficient weapons, according to court documents.

Sanon, who envisioned himself as Haiti’s new leader, was supposed to seize power, but the other suspects soon favored a former Haitian Supreme Court judge to take over instead. Police say the judge remains a fugitive.

A day before the killing, Solages falsely told other suspects that it was a CIA operation and that the real mission was to kill the president. Shortly before Moïse was killed, Solages yelled that it was supposedly a DEA operation so that the president’s security detail would comply.

Also detained are former Haitian Sen. John Joël Joseph, who had fled to Jamaica, and former U.S. government informant and Haitian businessman Rodolphe Jaar, who was extradited from the Dominican Republic.

As the U.S. investigation into the July 2021 assassination of Moïse pushes forward, the probe in Haiti is nearly idle. Three judges have stepped down from the case amid fears they will be killed and a fourth one was dismissed. Meanwhile, no court hearings have been held yet for the more than 40 suspects arrested in Haiti, with many of them including 18 Colombian soldiers languishing in a severely overcrowded jail in Port-au-Prince that often lacks food and water.

  • 4 key suspects in Haiti presidential slaying in U.S. custody

4 key suspects in Haiti presidential slaying in U.S. custody

    [ad_1]

    haiti president assassination 02076

The fourth suspect was identified as Colombian citizen Germán Rivera García, 44, who is among nearly two dozen former Colombian soldiers charged in the case.

Rivera, along with Solages and Vincent, face charges including conspiring to commit murder or kidnapping outside the U.S. and providing material support and resources resulting in death, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Sanon is charged with conspiring to smuggle goods from the U.S. and providing unlawful export information. Court documents state that he allegedly shipped 20 ballistic vests to Haiti, but that the items shipped were described as “medical X-ray vests and school supplies.”

It was not immediately known if the four suspects had attorneys who could comment on the development. The men are scheduled to appear in federal court Wednesday in Miami.

A total of seven suspects in the case are now in U.S. custody. Dozens of others still languish in Haiti’s main penitentiary, which is severely overcrowded and often lacks food and water for inmates.

The case has reached a virtual standstill in Haiti, with local officials last year nominating a fifth judge to investigate the killing after four others were dismissed or resigned for personal reasons.

One judge told The Associated Press that his family asked him not to take the case because they feared for his life. Another judge stepped down after one of his assistants died under murky circumstances.

Court documents state that exactly two months before Moïse was killed, Vincent texted Solages a video of a cat “reacting alertly” to the sound of gunfire and that Solages laughed, prompting Vincent to respond: “That’s the way Jovenel will be pretty much, but (sooner) if you guys really up to it!”

The document states that Solages responded that “(this) cat will never come back,” and “trust me brother, we definitely working our final decision.”

Then in June, some 20 former Colombian soldiers were recruited to supposedly help arrest the president and protect Sanon, who envisioned himself as Haiti’s new leader. Rivera was in charge of that group, the documents state.

A day before the killing, Solages falsely told other suspects that it was a CIA operation and that the mission was to kill the president, according to the documents. Shortly before the killing, authorities said, Solages shouted that it was allegedly a DEA operation to ensure compliance from the president’s security detail.

About a year after the killing, U.S. authorities say they interviewed Solages, Vincent and Rivera while they were in Haitian custody and that they agreed to talk.

The other suspects already in U.S. custody are Rodolphe Jaar, a former U.S. government informant and a Haitian businessman who was extradited from the Dominican Republic, where he was detained in January 2022.

That same month, U.S. authorities arrested Mario Antonio Palacios Palacios, a former Colombian soldier who was deported by Jamaica after fleeing there from Haiti. While en route to Colombia, he was deained by U.S. officials in Panama during a layover.

Also in January 2022, authorities arrested former Haitian Sen. John Joël Joseph, who also had fled to Jamaica.

Alfredo Izaguirre, a Miami-based lawyer for Palacios, said Tuesday’s arrival of the four other suspects will postpone the trial because they all have to be tried at the same time. He said Palacios had been prepared for the trial to begin in early March, but now it could be postponed for up to four months.

Haiti police say other high-profile suspects remain at large, including a former Supreme Court judge who authorities say was favored to seize power from Moïse instead of Sanon as originally planned. Another fugitive is Joseph Badio, alleged leader of the plot who previously worked for Haiti’s Ministry of Justice and the government’s anti-corruption unit until he was fired, police say.

Emmanuel Jeanty, an attorney for the president’s widow, Martine Moïse, who was injured in the attack and flown to the U.S. for care, did not return a message for comment.

In December, Martine Moïse tweeted that her husband — who also has been accused of corruption, which he denied — had fought against it, which resulted in his assassination. “Despite the blockages, 17 months later, the people are demanding #Justice,” she wrote.
