NIA raids house of suspected Islamic State operative in Srinagar

New Delhi: National Investigation Agency on Monday raided the house of a suspected Islamic State operative in Srinagar as part of an investigation in a case related to activities of some individuals from Kerala linked to the global terror group, an official said.

The house of Uzair Azhar Bhat, who is suspected to have been part of the Kerala module of the Islamic State — also known as ISIS — was raided at the Karfali Mohalla locality in downtown Srinagar, a spokesperson of the federal anti-terror agency said.

The official said digital devices seized from the house during the search are being examined and further investigations are in progress.

In 2021, the NIA had started probe into Mohammed Ameen alias “Abu Yahya” of Kadannamanna, Kerala, who had been running various Islamic State propaganda channels on different social media platforms.

“Through these channels, he was propagating violent Jihadi ideologies of ISIS and was radicalizing and recruiting new members to this ISIS module. He and his associates had even identified certain individuals for targeted killings,” the spokesperson said.

The NIA said they had also made plans to undertake ‘Hijrah’ (migration) to Jammu and Kashmir for engaging in terrorist acts and had raised funds from various sources for this trip.

“During the probe, it was found that Ameen was in touch with Deepthi Marla of Kerala, a converted Muslim, married to Anas Abdul Rahiman of Mangalore. In 2015, she had gone to Dubai to pursue studies where she met Mizha Siddeeque and both women developed an inclination towards ISIS,” the spokesperson said.

In 2019, the official said they tried to do ‘Hijrah’ to Khorasan (Afghanistan) and reached Tehran, Iran. After reaching Tehran, their contact with ISIS operatives based in Khorasan could not be established.

“They both returned to India, and Marla got in touch with Ameen, Obaid Hamid Matta, Madesh Shankar alias Abdullah and others and made plans to undertake Hijrah to ISIS administered territory.

“In January 2020, she went to Srinagar to meet Matta to plan the Hijrah and stayed in Srinagar for one week,” the spokesperson said, adding that one of the common contacts between Marla and Matta was Bhat, who is suspected to have been part of the conspiracy.

  • Minor siblings killed in suspected dog attacks in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj

Minor siblings killed in suspected dog attacks in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In suspected cases of stray dog attack, two minor brothers were found dead in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area, police said on Sunday.

The deceased, identified as Anand (7) and Aditya (5), lived with their parents in a slum cluster in Sindhi Basti, they said.

On March 10, Anand was reported missing around 3 pm following which SHO Vasant Kunj (South) along with a police team and the boy’s family started searching for him, police said.

After a two-hour-long search in the jungle adjacent to the slum cluster, the minor’s body was found near a wall at a secluded place, a senior police officer said.

The child’s body bore multiple injury marks which seemed to have been caused by an animal bite, the officer said.

“On enquiry from the neighbours and the locals, it was revealed that there are many stray dogs inside the jungle area that often attack goats and pigs in the area,” he said.

Following this, a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Vasant Kunj South police station and the body was sent to Safdarjung Hospital for post-mortem, police said.

Two days later, on March 12, Anand’s younger brother Aditya went to the same jungle area along with his cousin Chandan (24) to attend to a nature’s call, police said.

Chandan left the minor for some time and he returned to find Aditya injured, surrounded by stray dogs, they said.

“SI Mahender of Vasant Kunj South police station who was also present in the same area for the investigation of the March 10 incident heard the noise and rushed to the spot,” the senior police officer said.

The officer took the child to a hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors, the officer said.

The post-mortem of both the children has been done and further action will be taken based on the autopsy report, police said, adding further investigation is under progress.

Recalling the incident, Sucharita, a relative of the two boys, said Aditya was attacked while the family was busy with Anand’s last rites.

“This is very unfortunate and now after this tragedy, all of us are scared and angry. Why didn’t the authorities do something to help us? We lost our young children in stray dog attacks. Had timely action been taken, they would not have met this fate…”

“We want all the dogs in the area to be removed,” she added.

Expressing his anguish over the incident, Chandan, the boys’ cousin and an eyewitness in the case, said that nobody listens to their problems despite seeking action against stray dogs.

“It can happen to anyone. At least now the authorities should wake up,” he said.

The victims’ father is mentally challenged while their mother works at a beauty parlour in Mahipalpur. Now, they are left with only one child Ansh who is nine years old.

Following the incident, police said that a letter has been sent to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) seeking immediate action in the matter.

“We have sent a letter to the MCD. This is a matter of serious concern and immediate action should be taken to curb the stray dog menace in the area to further prevent any loss of life…,” the senior police officer said.

An inspection was also carried out by the MCD officials. They caught some 15-20 stray dogs in the area who will be sterilised, the officer said.

  • Iran arrest over 100 for suspected poisonings of schoolgirls

Iran arrest over 100 for suspected poisonings of schoolgirls

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iran’s Interior Ministry has said that more than 100 people in 11 provinces have been arrested on charges of involvement in the recent incidents of student poisoning at the country’s schools.

The Ministry announced the arrests in a statement on Saturday published on its website, listing the provinces as Tehran, Qom, Zanjan, Khuzestan, Hamedan, Fars, Gilan, West Azarbaijan, East Azarbaijan, Kurdestan and Khorasan Razavi.

The statement noted for some of the arrestees who used poisonous substances as a “mischievous” way to escape classes, and the authorities have given them necessary warnings and instructions, Xinhua news agency reported.

Some other arrestees are individuals with “hostile motivations,” the statement added, noting they sought to cause fear and anxiety among people and students. The authorities are investigating them to find out if they are connected to terrorist groups.

More than 700 students in over 30 schools across Iran have fallen victim to mysterious poisoning cases since November 30, 2022, when the first case was reported in the Qom province. Most of them were soon released from the hospital after receiving treatment, according to the official news agency IRNA.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Monday urged law enforcement to pursue anyone responsible, vowing to give maximum punishment to the perpetrators.

The Iranian Interior Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that its investigation revealed that the diffusion of certain “stimulant substances” among students led to their poisoning symptoms in some schools over the past weeks.

Suspected spy pigeon with devices fitted on leg caught in Odisha

    [ad_1]

Paradip: A pigeon fitted with devices, which appear to be a camera and a microchip, was caught from a fishing boat off the Paradip coast of Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, with the police suspecting that the bird was being used for spying.

Some fishermen found the pigeon perched on their trawler a few days ago. The bird was captured and handed over to the marine police here on Wednesday.

“Our veterinarians will examine the bird. We will seek help of the State Forensic Science Laboratory for examining the devices attached to its legs. It appears that the devices are a camera and a microchip,” Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police Rahul PR told PTI.

It also seems like something has been scribbled on the wings of the bird in a language unknown to the local police.

“Experts’ help will also be sought to find out what is written,” the SP said.

Pitambar Behera, an employee of the fishing trawler ‘Sarathi’, said he saw the pigeon perched on the boat.

“Suddenly I noticed that some instruments were attached to the bird’s legs. I also found that something is written on its wings. I could not understand it as it was not in Odia,” Behera said.

He caught the bird as it came closer.

The pigeon was found on the trawler when it was anchored around 35 kilometres off the coast of Konark around 10 days back.

Behera said he fed the bird broken rice for the past several days.

  • Iranian parents protests over suspected poisoning of hundreds of schoolgirls

Iranian parents protests over suspected poisoning of hundreds of schoolgirls

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Amid a wave of suspected poison attacks affecting girl students in several schools in Iran, parents protested across the country on Saturday.

According to Reuters, they gathered outside an Education Ministry building in western Tehran to protest against the diseases turned into an anti-government demonstration.

“Parents of the school girls who were poisoned took to the streets and blamed the regime for a series of chemical attacks on school girls in Iran: “Revolutionary Guards! you are our ISIS “ this is the slogan heard in Tehran today,” Iranian journalist and human rights activist Masih Alinejad, tweeted.

The first incident of mass poisoning was reported on November 30, 2022. The illness which is so-far unexplained has affected hundreds of female students in dozens of schools in recent months.

The Iranian authorities believe that these girls may have been poisoned and blame it on Tehran’s enemies.

Although there have been no casualties yet, the children have complained of headaches, heart palpitations and a feeling of lethargy.

Some described the symptoms as being unable to move, others smelled of tangerines, chlorine or cleaning products.

According to a report by Reuters, the sickness affected more than 30 schools in at least 10 of Iran’s 31 provinces on Saturday.

“Iranian authorities must take urgent action to stop these attacks and bring perpetrators to justice in fair trials. Education is a human right,” Amnesty International tweeted.

The poisoning incidents in Iranian schools come shortly after widespread protests have taken place in Iran since September 2022, against the backdrop of the death of the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, days after she was detained by the morality police on charges of not adhering to the standards of compulsory headscarf.
