(Reuters) – Europe’s benchmark stock index rose on Monday, supported by gains in all major sectors, rebounding from its worst weekly performance this year.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 1.11% to 462.79 points at 7:52 am (Brasília time). The Index fell 1.4% last week after higher-than-expected US inflation data fueled bets the Federal Reserve will continue to raise borrowing costs.

All of the euro zone’s major sectoral indexes advanced in early trade, with gains of 1.2% to 1.6% in riskier parts of the market, including oil and gas, technology and autos and auto parts.

Miners, among the biggest losers last week, jumped 0.8%. Defensive sectors such as healthcare and telecommunications posted the smallest gains.

In LONDON, the Financial Times index advanced 0.81%, to 7,942.85 points.

In FRANKFURT, the DAX index rose 1.51% to 15,440.04 points.

In PARIS, the CAC-40 index gained 1.58%, at 7,300.89 points.

In MILAN, the Ftse/Mib index appreciated by 1.78%, at 27,466.36 points.

In MADRID, the Ibex-35 index registered an increase of 1.28%, to 9,319.40 points.

In LISBON, the PSI20 index appreciated by 0.54%, to 6,016.70 points.

Three years after the start of the pandemic, a lot has changed for young people: ‘I wouldn’t have been here without

The negotiations to reduce the workload of youth protectors, last week, do not provide a quick intervention. This is what the trade union FNV says. Painful, because an inspection report was released yesterday, which once again emphasized: youth care has really sunk to the bottom, hundreds of children are waiting in vain for help.

Arbaaz Khan reveals why he chose to start career as villain in debut film ‘Daraar’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bollywood actor-producer Arbaaz Khan, who was recently seen in the streaming series ‘Tanaav’, started his career with a negative role in ‘Daraar’.

One would wonder as to why the son of a legendary screenwriter (Salim Khan of Salim-Javed) and the brother of one of the biggest superstars of India — Salman Khan, would make such an unconventional choice.

Well, it was because the opportunities for Arbaaz, as he admitted, were very few and he was looking to dive into showbiz as early as possible.

The actor told IANS: “The opportunities were very less and there were only a few directors with whom an actor would have wanted to work then. Honestly, I was just waiting to start work.”

Arbaaz, who hosts the long-format talk show, ‘The Invincibles with Arbaaz Khan’ on Bollywood Bubble, further mentioned: “At the end of the day, I too had responsibilities, my father had such a terrific body of work, my brother (Salman Khan) was already a big star by then.”

He added, “So, it was important for me to take the plunge. In showbiz, you expect your break at the age of 21 or 22 but, once you’re in your mid 20s and you haven’t started working, there’s pressure on you to work, earn and deliver. So, I thought the film was good and the negative shade of my character did not matter to me.”

“So, it was more of a work call, I got the award in my very first film. I agree that for a long time I was typecast as an actor after that film but that also gave me work. Kaam karna important hai na (To work is all that matters, right?) And, I changed that particular image over a period of time”, he concluded.

  • UP: Wait for mosque construction work to start in Ayodhya to end soon

UP: Wait for mosque construction work to start in Ayodhya to end soon

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Entangled first in obtaining no-objection certificates (NOCs), followed by a delay in the change of land use, the wait for the construction of the Dhannipur mosque in Ayodhya district of Uttar Pradesh is finally set to end soon.

A mosque, a hospital, a research institute, a community kitchen and a library are to be constructed by the Indo-Islamic Cultural Foundation (IICF) trust on five acres of land given by the state government. The matter of change of land use has been pending with the Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA) for the last four months. It is expected to be resolved by this week.

ADA Chairman and Ayodhya Divisional Commissioner Gaurav Dayal told PTI that the decision on the issue of change in land use will be taken up this week.

“We have received instructions from the government. The issue will be taken up on Monday and a decision will be taken this week,” he said.

Arshad Khan, the local trustee of the IICF trust, said an application was given in July 2020, seeking approval for the construction of the mosque, the hospital, the research institute, the community kitchen and the library on the land allocated in Dhannipur village of Ayodhya.

The construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya was approved a few days before that, even though the application was submitted offline, he added.

“When we applied for change of land use, the ADA said the application should be made online. On conveying the trust’s inability to do so, people from the authority filed the application online. As the application was submitted online, the portal demanded 15-16 NOCs,” Khan said, adding that it took the trust more than a year to acquire the documents.

“When the matter was brought to the the then district magistrate’s notice, he helped us get an NOC. After the NOC arrived, the issue of land use change came up in October last year,” he said.

Khan said whenever the ADA is asked about the delay in the change of land use, it says the matter will be resolved at the next board meeting.

In a historic judgment on November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court ordered the construction of a Ram temple at a disputed site in Ayodhya and asked the government to allocate five acres of land for the construction of a mosque at a prominent place in the district.

The IICF trust, constituted for the construction of the mosque, announced its plans to build a hospital, a community kitchen, a library and a research institute, along with the mosque.

Trust secretary Athar Hussain had hoped that the formalities related to land-use change would be completed by the end of November last year. It was expected that the construction work of the mosque and other facilities would start in December and the structure would be built in a year’s time.

US, Russia should resume implementation of New START treaty: UN chief

    [ad_1]

United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the US and Russia to resume the full implementation of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START).

Asked about Guterres’ reaction to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement that his country will suspend its participation in the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty, Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday that the Secretary-General’s position is that the US and Russia should resume the full implementation of the treaty without delay, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The New START and successive bilateral treaties on strategic nuclear arms reduction between the two countries have provided security not only for Russia and the US, but (also) for the entire international community,” Dujarric added.

A world without nuclear arms control is a far more dangerous and unstable one with potentially catastrophic consequences. Every effort should be taken to avoid this outcome, including through an immediate return to dialogue, he told a daily press briefing.

Asked whether Guterres has plans to talk to Putin on the issue of the New START or the conflict in Ukraine, Dujarric said he had nothing to share with reporters at this point.

  • Hayley Raso at the double as Matildas overcome sluggish start at Cup of Nations

Hayley Raso at the double as Matildas overcome sluggish start at Cup of Nations

    [ad_1]

The Czech Republic have a habit of holding highly ranked sides to 0-0 draws. Last year they did it to the United States and England, the world’s No 1 and 4 respectively. What do Australia have that they – arguably two of the World Cup favourites – do not? Nothing at all before half-time, and after that quite a bit of Hayley Raso, a little bit of Sam Kerr and a record-breaking Clare Polkinghorne, with the help of some well-used substitutes.

What a 4-0 win means for the Matildas in the next six months is completely open to interpretation, so difficult is it to glean meaningful takeaways from friendly tournaments such as the Cup of Nations. This one, being in a World Cup year, has been dressed up as a practice run for the real thing in July. Tony Gustavsson will not stop saying “rehearsal” and “tournament mode” – he may well have been muttering these words into his ever-present headset on the sideline.

The Czech Republic, Spain and Jamaica were all strategically picked for these home matches because their playing styles are similar to those of Australia’s World Cup group-stage opponents the Republic of Ireland, Canada and Nigeria. The defensive-minded, structurally organised Czechs in this scenario are supposed to be Canada. The same Canada to whom Australia lost two friendlies last year.

On the evidence of Thursday night, it is unclear how they will fare against them when it counts. Glass-half-full observers will reference figurative cobwebs being blown out after a few months apart followed by a confidence-boosting second half. The less optimistic will attempt to place this performance into a wider context, in which the Matildas are ranked 12th in the world and face a tricky knockout-stage draw, and point out that some of the Czech Republic’s strongest players did not travel. Others will remember the Socceroos did what nobody believed they could.

The truth is that nobody knows, because recent results have been so capricious. Just when you think Gustavsson will rue the day he threw on a second-string side and copped seven goals against Spain, he oversees convincing wins over Sweden and Denmark. The same occurred at Central Coast Stadium; one begins to analyse an opening 45 minutes during which Australia spent the first half with a hell of a lot of ball but nothing to show for it, and then they go and score four after the break.

    Sam Kerr nets Australia’s third.

What can be written, and then underlined and highlighted, is that Raso is a gun. The winger, quietly spoken off the field, has a brilliant “what do you think you’re looking at?” quality while on it. She threw herself into everything, as part of an interchanging role with Cortnee Vine, in the manner of a player with a point to prove to Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor, who has played her only sparingly off the bench these past few months.

It was apparent when, 20 minutes in, she made a dart for the box and went down under Gabriela Šlajsová’s stuck-out foot, ensuring a yellow card for the latter. Also three minutes into the second half when, with Kerr’s final pass behind her, she managed to contort her body into a shooting position and score the opener – partly thanks to a fortuitous deflection. And again seven minutes later when her header, from one of Steph Catley’s characteristically reliable set pieces, confirmed her brace.

The missing piece of that goal’s puzzle is the player who nodded the ball to Raso from the far post. Clare Hunt was a bolter in this squad, a reward for consistent form for Western Sydney Wanderers, and made herself known from the off. The same can be said for Alex Chidiac, who announced her arrival soon after with two involvements in the build-up to Kerr’s goal. Before the match Gustavsson referenced this, saying: “It’s not just about the starting XI, it’s about the finishing XI as well. What you will see in this tournament is similar to what we’ve seen in the last couple of camps, that hopefully we score a lot of goals when game changes come in.”

This was a night to celebrate for Polkinghorne, too, even though she had been on the field from the start with the armband. The 34-year-old appears very much a defender en route to her fifth World Cup, and scored one of her own just as she became Australia’s most-capped international with 152 appearances, surpassing Cheryl Salisbury.

The Czech Republic did not qualify for the World Cup but they scared Australia’s defence in the first half despite having less than 30% possession. Mackenzie Arnold was called into action to stop a long-range strike from Anna Dlasková, and again after some serious route-one football when the Wanderers’ Jitka Chlastáková ran onto Miroslava Mrázová’s headed flick-on which came straight from a goal kick. In all their defence was stubborn, and in the end the Matildas broke it down. Maybe that is all we need to know.

  • JK first to start GPS based attendance of Teachers & seeks feedback from students

JK first to start GPS based attendance of Teachers & seeks feedback from students

    [ad_1]

Jammu, Feb 07: With the launch of two applications today by Chief Secretary, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta, J&K became first in the country to take online monthly feedback from students of class 6th and above about the performance of their teachers and carry out the GPS based attendance of teachers on daily basis.

The ceremony was attended by Principal Secretary Education; MD, Samagra Shiksha; Director School Education Kashmir/Jammu, Director Estates, Secretary JKBOSE and many other concerned officers.

Dr Mehta complimented the department for developing these applications and called them the powerful tools to take the education sector towards much higher efficiency and accountability. He remarked that these applications would ensure that an authentic feedback comes from the grassroots level from the ones who are directly involved in the learning process.

He enjoined upon the officers to monitor the progress at highest levels so that the results improve substantially. He maintained that the teachers in government sector are best in terms of qualifications and trainings and they just needs to focus more on academic activities to ensure improved results.

The Chief Secretary advised the department to make this feedback a benchmark while analysing the annual performance reports of the teachers. He said that the teachers who perform well, and are punctual and who also receive good feedback from students should be duly recognized and rewarded by the department. He observed that such teachers should be preferred in career progression and other recommendations.

The system named as “SAMIKSHA” as it will be reflecting the true performance of the Teachers with respect to their inputs in the actual classroom, leaving no space for subjectivity.

It was given out that the student feedback forms are designed to get feedback from students on different teaching-learning techniques in the institution. Besides the teachers are given unique usernames and passwords to verify their input and outcomes. The comprehensive report will be visible to all levels viz-Teachers, HOIs, ZEO, CEO, DSEK/J, and at UT level in the hierarchy.

The department has worked out some 25 parameters (questions) regarding teachers and school ambience, out of which 02 are optional. The school and teacher based questionnaire needs to be filled by the students once on monthly basis grading them on 5-point scale with Excellent, Very Good, Good, Average and Below Average results, as informed during the launch ceremony.

Another app launched today was ‘JK Attendance-SED’ available for downloading on both Android and iOS. The application will give a peek into the daily attendance of teachers to even Directors and CEOs. The application will capture live location of the employee with Geo Coordinates and even allow his/her time specific tracking.

The attendance system would reduce paperwork and save time and resources. It would eliminate the duplicate data entries and improve management of attendance across all schools.

The same application would enable employees to make leave requests online. It would automatically send it for necessary approval and keep his/her leave account safe for viewing by the higher authorities.

Later on the Chief Secretary also released ‘Whole School Safety’ manual. He called it a very important document prepared by the department. He observed that the safety of our children is all important and should be given priority over every other concern. He declared that this document is important and provides holistic approach for keeping children safe against hazards.

The Principal Secretary, School Education, Alok Kumar revealed that all of the digital applications besides the safety manual has been prepared in-house by the department employing its own personnel and resources. He gave out that he feels immensely pleased that Directorate of Samagra Shiksha has trained Key Resource Persons in this regard.

He stated that the necessary orientation of all CEOs/DIET principals and teachers as per the guidelines has also been done, which explicitly elaborate various kinds of vulnerabilities our children are exposed to and their remedies. The SOPs on current pandemic viz-a-viz the role and responsibilities of every individual concerned makes the document a comprehensive reference document.

The same is also an initiative of Samagra Shiksha which has been designed for creating a safe environment for children, starting from their homes to their schools and back, says the manual.(GNS)
