Rodeo review – badass female racer stars in full throttle death-wish biker movie

    [ad_1]

First-time feature director Lola Quivoron opens up the throttle with this biker movie set in the outskirts of Bordeaux in France, which gives us some fierce bursts of speed, real-life stunts, and quite a bit of storytelling content. It reminded me of Rachel Kushner’s 2013 novel The Flamethrowers, which also showed how very, very angry some men get when women are good at riding motorbikes.

Real-life racer Julie Ledru makes her movie acting debut as Julia – street name “Inconnu” or “Unknown” – a badass that we first see storming out of some kind of hostel and then stealing a motorbike. She has a cunning method of making an online offer for one on sale on eBay, showing up at the seller’s house and asking if she can do a solo test drive, reassuringly giving him her heavy bag to hold, supposedly full of valuable stuff like her phone and money (but actually just soil she’s scooped into it) and then taking off. Julia desperately wants to be accepted by a crowd of sexist male dirt-bike riders who do breathtakingly dangerous moves and suicidal wheelies at their illegal meets on deserted stretches of road.

But on her first day she is haunted by a catastrophe involving the only biker there who was nice to her, and the chill of this persists as she hangs out with the gang at their garage where they are theoretically employed restoring old bikes and selling them on at a profit. In fact, they are selling stolen machines, and Julie’s skills in theft and her hunger for thrills impress the gang leader Domino, who runs things from prison; Julia, meanwhile, befriends Domino’s abused partner Ophélie (played by co-writer Antonia Buresi) as well as entertaining the romantic attentions of fellow biker Kaïs (Yannis Lafki).

It’s a movie made dense and vehement with Julie’s passion for bikes and her angry sense of a death wish which is going to strike her, ahead of anyone else.

A battle they faced together, Henry Winkler and his wife Stacey love each other today like the first day: “She’s beautiful”

Henry Winkler is a very famous actor, remembered by the whole world, in particular, for his role as Arthur Fonzarelli in Happy Days. Hardly anyone, however, knows what he was forced to face in his private life. Actors often manage to hide behind a camera. However, even they, in their own homes, are very normal human beings.

Henry Winkler has been married for 44 years to the wife Stacey. Two children were born from their relationship.

Their first meeting happened inside a clothing storewhere the woman worked. The actor wanted to buy a jacket and so he turned to that beautiful employee. It was a blow to the heart.

He was wearing purple pants and had red hair. Before she spoke, I thought to myself, “This woman standing in front of me is beautiful.” I went back to the shop the following week and there she was.

    Henry Winkler's Wife Drama

In 1978, the two met married in the Manhattan synagogue and in 1980 welcomed their daughter Zoey. Little Max instead arrived in 1983. His wife already had a son, Jed, born from her previous marriage to a lawyer.

In the late 1990s, life for husband and wife changed. Stacey found out she has a breast cancer. A difficult battle, which she finally managed to win. Almost everything seemed to be back to normal, until 2007, when that monster came back again. The woman was forced to undergo one double mastectomy and today it can be defined as one survived.

Henry Winkler doesn’t have them never let go of the handaccompanied her step by step and today seeks to raise the world’s awareness of breast cancer.

Thanks to this mutual respect and support, husband and wife were able to stay together for 44 long years, living a real and healthy relationship. The actor has never missed an opportunity to tell the whole world who Stacey is still as beautiful as it was on the first day.

  • B-town stars slam media for Alia Bhatt’s ‘invasion of privacy’

B-town stars slam media for Alia Bhatt’s ‘invasion of privacy’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Karan Johar, Anushka Sharma, Neetu Kapoor and Janhvi Kapoor extended their solidarity to Alia Bhatt, who accused the paparazzi and the media of ‘invasion of privacy’ on her Instagram handle on Tuesday.

Alia posted a collage of pictures of herself, taken inside the house without her consent. She wrote in the long note, “Are you kidding me? I was at my house having a perfectly normal afternoon sitting in my living room when I felt something watching me…. I looked up and saw two men on the terrace of my neighbouring building with a camera right at me! In what world is this okay and allowed?”

Tagging the Mumbai police, she added, “This is a gross invasion of someone’s privacy and it’s safe to say all lines were crossed today! @mumbaipolice.”

In support of Alia, Anushka Sharma wrote on her Instagram story, “This is not the first time they are doing this. About two years ago we called them out for the same reason! You’d think it would have made them more respectful of people’s space and privacy. Absolutely shameful! They were also the only guys posting photos of our daughter despite repeated requests!”

    ANI 20230221192044

Karan Johar was also furious at the incident. He took to Instagram to post, “There is no justification to this absolutely disgusting invasion of privacy!!!! Everyone from the entertainment industry is always for the media and the paparazzi and are accommodating… but there HAS to be a LIMIT… This is about anyone’s right to feel safe in their own homes! This is not about actors or celebrities it’s a basic human right!!!”

    ANI 20230221192115

Re-sharing the post on social media, Alia’s mother-in-law Neetu Kapoor wrote, “This is not right!!!”

    ANI 20230221192126

Sridevi’s daughter Janhvi Kapoor was too annoyed with the incident. In a long post, she wrote, “This is disgustingly intrusive. This publication has repeatedly done things like this. Including despite my continuous requests, photographed me unaware; inside the gym, I go to while working out through the glass door. In a space that is supposed to be private, where one does not anticipate to get photographed. I understand showing up to places, and in plain sight and doing your job.”

She further added, ”Where there is a mutual understanding of the job of the photographers, and the job and requirements of being a public figure. This stealthiness, zooming into someone’s private space without their consent or even awareness and calling it exclusive as if it’s a journalistic accomplishment is far from it.”

    ANI 20230221192229

After Alia posted about her resentment in the evening, Arjun Kapoor and her sister Shaheen Bhatt were the first ones who showed support for the ‘Raazi’ actor.

This is an ongoing tussle between the celebs and the paparazzi about the intrusion of private space, which has hit the headlines in recent time.

  • ‘Perfect explosion’: merger of neutron stars creates spherical cosmic blast

‘Perfect explosion’: merger of neutron stars creates spherical cosmic blast

    [ad_1]

Astronomers have observed what might be the “perfect explosion”, a colossal and utterly spherical blast triggered by the merger of two very dense stellar remnants called neutron stars shortly before the combined entity collapsed to form a black hole.

Researchers on Wednesday described for the first time the contours of the type of explosion, called a kilonova, that occurs when neutron stars merge. The rapidly expanding fireball of luminous matter they detailed defied their expectations.

The two neutron stars, with a combined mass about 2.7 times that of our sun, had orbited each other for billions of years before colliding at high speeds and exploding. This unfolded in a galaxy called NGC 4993, about 140-150m light years away from Earth in the direction of the constellation Hydra. A light year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9tn miles (9.5tn km).

The existence of kilonova explosions was proposed in 1974 and confirmed in 2013, but what they looked like was unknown until this one was detected in 2017 and studied intensively.

“It is a perfect explosion in several ways. It is beautiful, both aesthetically, in the simplicity of the shape, and in its physical significance,” said astrophysicist Albert Sneppen of the Cosmic Dawn Center in Copenhagen, lead author of the research published in the journal Nature.

“Aesthetically, the colors the kilonova emits quite literally look like a sun – except, of course, being a few hundred million times larger in surface area. Physically, this spherical explosion contains the extraordinary physics at the heart of this merger,” Sneppen added.

The researchers had expected the explosion to perhaps look like a flattened disk – a colossal luminous cosmic pancake, possibly with a jet of material streaming out of it.

“To be honest, we are really going back to the drawing board with this,” Cosmic Dawn Center astrophysicist and study co-author Darach Watson said.

“Given the extreme nature of the physical conditions – far more extreme than a nuclear explosion, for example, with densities greater than an atomic nucleus, temperatures of billions of degrees and magnetic fields strong enough to distort the shapes of atoms – there may well be fundamental physics here that we don’t understand yet,” Watson added.

The kilonova was studied using the European Southern Observatory’s Chile-based Very Large Telescope.

The two neutron stars began their lives as massive normal stars in a two-star system called a binary. Each exploded and collapsed after running out of fuel, leaving behind a small and dense core about 12 miles (20km) in diameter but packing more mass than the sun.

Very gradually, they drew nearer to each other, orbiting at a speedy clip. Each were stretched out and pulled apart in the final seconds before the merger because of the power of the other’s gravitational field. Their inner parts collided at about 25% of the speed of light, creating the most intense magnetic fields in the universe. The explosion unleashed the luminosity of about a billion suns for a few days.

The two briefly formed a single massive neutron star that then collapsed to form a black hole, an even denser object with gravity so fierce that not even light can escape.

The outer parts of the neutron stars, meanwhile, were stretched into long streamers, with some material flung into space. During the process, the densities and temperatures were so intense that heavy elements were forged, including gold, platinum, arsenic, uranium and iodine.

The researchers offered some hypotheses to explain the spherical shape of the explosion, including energy released from the short-lived single neutron star’s enormous magnetic field or the role of enigmatic particles called neutrinos.

“This is fundamentally astonishing, and an exciting challenge for any theoreticians and numerical simulations,” Sneppen said. “The game is on.”

  • ‘Ritual humiliations’: African music stars struggle to get visas to Europe

‘Ritual humiliations’: African music stars struggle to get visas to Europe

    [ad_1]

Emma Nzioka, a Kenyan performer and DJ known as Coco Em, was looking forward to the Terra Sagrada festival in Cape Verde for nearly a year. Some of her favourite African artists, such as Boddhi Satva, would be playing.

But Nzioka did not make it to the festival last month, or out of the country, for that matter. At the check-in counter in Kenya, she was told she could not board her flight unless she bought a return ticket with the same airline (she had one with another airline) to “prove” she would return home. Although Nzioka was going to Cape Verde, she was transiting through Amsterdam.

“The airline staff say many people have gone to ‘cause problems’ in Europe, they have torn their documents, refused to leave and have had to be deported,” Nzioka tweeted, adding that the airline officials had openly expressed scepticism over her “relationship” with her country of transit.

Her post went viral and generated a flood of similar stories that suggest Africans often face unfair travel restrictions and “ritual humiliations” when travelling abroad.

Earlier this year, Nigerian Afropop star Yemi Alade’s requests for a Schengen visa reportedly went unanswered. The artist, who has several world tours under her belt, was also denied a Canadian visa for the International Africa Nights festival. The co-founder of the festival, Suzanne Rousseau, told CTV news in Canada she understood that the refusal was due to “financial reasons” and fears that the artist would “not want to leave Canada”.

Travel to, and transit through, Europe is difficult for Africans. The top three countries with the highest Schengen visa rejection rates are from the continent: Guinea-Bissau had 53% of its applications rejected, Senegal 52% and Nigeria 51%. Most African countries are in the bottom half of the global passports ranking, and with few exceptions, people from African countries need to obtain visas for more than 100 countries.

To get a Schengen visa, a host of documents is required, and can include bank statements, return flights, addresses while abroad and travel insurance policies. “The threshold gets higher and higher and changes so dramatically,” says Nanjala Nyabola, author of Travelling While Black.

Stories of Africans being subjected to travel indignities, or being required to meet opaque requirements are common, and travellers like Nzioka know their ability to travel rests on more than just their documents. The artist, who travels often for tours and performances, had previously met similar barriers to those she faced last month. When traveling to Tunisia through Italy for another festival in 2019, her passport was seized. She claims she was questioned for three hours by five different people about her visa, and why she did not take a direct route.

She believes that the officials stereotyped her, a dark-skinned woman with long braids. “We know what kind of things girls like you go to do there,” she recalls them saying, as they recounted instances where women had eloped with foreign men, or settled illegally in Europe.

“The perception is that certain travellers with different racial backgrounds are inherently more risky because of who they are,” says Nyabola

African nationals looking to visit the UK for professional or business reasons experience more than twice the refusal rate of other nationalities. Nzioka has missed shows in the UK because of stringent visa requirements, which include proof of property ownership in one’s home country.

“It’s not enough to say I live here. I’m married here. I have kids here,” says Nzioka. “They’re like: ‘Do you have assets back at home’?”

Such requirements can limit the visibility of African artists, Nzioka said. “You can count the African female DJs who are touring in Europe on one hand.”
