Cloudy weather and light rain may provide some relief from the heat in the city on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The IMD said a western disturbance active over the western Himalayan region is predicted to bring light rain in the northwestern plains starting Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the MeT office predicted above-normal maximum temperatures for most parts of the country from April to June, except parts of the northwest and the peninsular regions.

Above-normal heatwave days are expected in most parts of central, east, and northwest India during this period.

The meteorological department has issued an ‘orange’ alert with a warning of severe heatwave conditions for two days from Tuesday in Patna, Banka, Jamui, Nawada, Aurangabad, Supaul and several other districts of Bihar.

Besides, a yellow’ warning has also been sounded in Begusarai, Nalanda, Gaya, Arwal, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Buxar, Khagaria and Munger regions of the state.

The meteorological department uses four colour codes – green (no action needed), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action) – for weather warning.

“People are advised to avoid heat exposure and dehydration,” a senior official of the Bihar Disaster Management Department said.

In West Bengal, Bankura recorded the highest temperature at 43.7 degrees Celsius, while capital city Kolkata’s maximum was 40 degrees Celsius.

Hot weather conditions continued to prevail in Haryana and Punjab with the maximum temperature settling above the 40 degree-mark in most parts of the two states.

Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, recorded a high of 39.4 degrees Celsius.

Prayagraj and Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh were the hottest at 44.2 degrees Celsius, with the weather department predicting rain/thundershower at isolated places over
    western parts of the state.

Lucknow recorded the maximum temperature of 41.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.5 degree Celsius.

However, the MeT has predicted light rain and thunderstorm in Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions and in Jaipur, Ajmer and Bharatpur divisions on April 19 and 20.

It has also predicted a fall in temperatures by 2-3 degrees in the next two days.

Reeling under the scorching sun, people in lower hills of Himachal had some relief as maximum temperatures dropped by few notches following light rains at several places.

Una recorded a high of 37.4 degrees, while Dhaulakuan was hottest in the region with a maximum temperature of 38.7 degrees.

The popular tourist destinations of Shimla, Manali, Dharamsala and Narkanda posted a high of 25.4 degrees, 21 degrees, 28.2 degrees and 19.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) forecast severe heat wave conditions in one mandal and heat wave conditions in 117 more across the state on Tuesday.

Around three inches of snowfall was recorded in Machil near the Line of Control (LoC).

The plain areas, including Srinagar city, were lashed by overnight rains, bringing down the temperature, they said.

The weather office said intermittent rain is likely to continue till Tuesday evening.

Intermittent light to moderate rain or snowfall over higher reaches is very likely at many places on Wednesday.

During this wet spell, thunderstorm with strong gusty wind reaching 20-30 kmph and hailstorm is also possible at some places in Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the death toll due to sunstroke at the ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’ award event in Navi Mumbai rose to 14 after the death of a 34-year-old woman while seven patients are undergoing treatment, a civic official said on Tuesday.

  • JK Unemployment Rate Soars Above 23% In March

JK Unemployment Rate Soars Above 23% In March

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In a shocking turn of events, Jammu and Kashmir has now secured the third spot on the list of highest unemployment rates in India, with an alarming 23.1 percent rate. This marks a significant jump of 6 percent from the previous month’s rate of 17.1, as per the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

The figures are a cause for concern, as they reveal a substantial increase in unemployment rates in the UT in the month of March alone. In January the unemployment rate in J&K was at 21.8

The state of Haryana tops the list with the highest rate of 26.8 percent, followed closely by Rajasthan with 26.4 percent, and Jammu and Kashmir at 23.1 percent. Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand also feature in the list with high unemployment rates of 20.7 percent, 17.6 percent, and 17.5 percent, respectively. These statistics paint a bleak picture of the current state of employment in the region and call for urgent action to address this pressing issue.

The latest figures reveal that India’s unemployment rate is currently ranging between 7.5% to 8.5% in urban areas and 7.0% in rural areas. But the real shocker is Haryana, who’s taking the lead with a whopping 2.4% unemployment rate! Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand are with only 0.8% unemployment each.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently announced that over 30,000 government positions have been filled in the last three years in Jammu and Kashmir, with recruitment for an additional 20,000 positions in the administration to be advertised in the next 3-4 months. The Union Territory administration aims to increase self-employment opportunities in the region.

It is important to note that several recruitment exams conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) have been postponed following complaints of irregularities and illegalities. The government had to cancel the JKSSB recruitment exams for the posts of Junior Engineer and Sub Inspector after a court ruling.

Other states in alphabetical order have the following unemployment rates: Andhra Pradesh 7.5, Bihar 17.6, Chhattisgarh 0.8, Delhi 9.7, Goa 15.9, Gujarat 1.8, Haryana 26.8, Himachal Pradesh 11.7, Jharkhand 17.7, Karnataka 2.3, Kerala 6.7, Madhya Pradesh 3.7, Maharashtra 5.5, Meghalaya 2.6, Odisha 2.6, Puducherry 1.5, Punjab 6.9, Rajasthan 26.4, Sikkim 20.7, Tamil Nadu 3.4, Telangana 5.2, Uttar Pradesh 5.5, Uttarakhand 0.8, and West Bengal 4.8.

From Tragedy To Triumph: Insha Bashir Soars On Wheels

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Around 15 years ago, a tragic accident not only shattered the dreams of a Budgam woman of becoming a doctor but also confined her to a wheelchair. But nothing stopped her from working hard and becoming the first wheelchair-bound basketball player of Kashmir.

Insha Bashir (29), a resident of Beerwah area of Budgam, despite her disability, is climbing the ladder of success, not only for herself but also helping other specially-abled children to make their dreams come true. Insha said, “I was not disabled from birth. I had a regular life like every other girl. When I was in 12th grade, I had been diagnosed with gastric ulcers and suffered oral bleeding. In the same year, one day, I was at the terrace with dizziness and nausea and started vomiting blood from where I fell down and hit the ground underneath, resulting in grievous injuries to my spine.”

“It wasn’t just a spinal cord injury, but this incident shattered my dream of becoming a doctor and made me wholly and solely dependent on my family. I started suffering from depression, facing taunts from relatives and other issues. My health started deteriorating despite full support from my family,” she said.

“Despite facing the entire trauma, though I had to change my subjects, I continued my studies and passed the 12th grade. Then I pursued a bachelor’s degree and B.Ed as well, and currently, I am pursuing a master’s in social work,” Insha said.

“My dad’s deteriorating health pushed me to take charge of my life. And so, I began researching my condition and what I could do about it. I came across the Shafqat Rehabilitation Center in Srinagar that gave six months of physiotherapy,” she recalls. Her father, her steadfast cornerstone, had been diagnosed with Parkinsonism, and this proved to be the final nail in the coffin, ensuring that she finally mustered enough strength to stand up on her own feet.

After repeated attempts by her father, Bashir Ahmad Wani, and constant counselling sessions by Dr. Saleem Wani- the valley’s famous urologist, Insha was able to overcome this difficult phase of her life.

“Though it took me a long time to accept this reality, when I realized it, I started taking everything positively and saw my disability as a challenge that had become a hurdle. At the center, when I saw more people with more complex problems than me, it gave me the courage that I am not the only person who is facing this problem in the world. When I saw specially-abled boys playing basketball and other games in a very happy mood, it reignited my childhood inclination towards it as well,” she added.

“Once I overcame my initial hesitation, I found the game to be enjoyable, convenient, and suitable to partake in, from a wheelchair. I found the game very interesting, and it got me impelled by the enthusiasm of representing Jammu & Kashmir,” she said.

“I was the first wheelchair-bound woman from Kashmir to play basketball. I started training others, and in some time, a team was ready following which I played at the national and international levels and won many medals,” Insha said.

She represented India in the US in 2019 and participated in the National Championship as the captain of the J&K Wheelchair Basketball Women’s team in 2019. Besides that, she was invited by the US consulate to be a part of the prestigious Sports Visitor Program.

She now motivates and inspires others in the valley to overcome their inhibitions and impediments and take up sporting pursuits.

“Besides playing and training my team, my major area of focus is to encourage differently-abled girls in sports, not just in Kashmir but across the country, and ensure that they have a say in their own lives,” she said.

She practices on a daily basis following a professional schedule. After practice, she returns to the hostel and mentors, counsels, and instructs young girls who wish to rise beyond their struggles and play like her.

“My message to other specially-abled persons will be that your disability isn’t the end of life. Rather, you need to be courageous to fight all odds and overcome challenges,” she said. “If one of your organs isn’t functioning, your brain is working and that is enough to dream and work on your dreams to make them come true.” (KNO)

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: As spring sets in, migratory birds have begun their departure from Kashmir valley, having welcomed over 1.3 million of them this winter.

According to officials, these birds have been visiting Kashmir annually due to their centuries-old relationship with the region, as they find solace in the temperate climate of the valley.

“During the month of October, these birds start migration from Siberia, China, Philippines, Eastern Europe and Japan to the valley and stay here for about five to six months”, they said, adding that around 13 lakh migratory birds visited Kashmir from October last year.

“The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has taken up restoration of wetlands on priority. Various departments of the Government are working for restoration of wetlands under their respective jurisdictions”, officials said.

Ifshan Dewan, Kashmir’s wildlife warden (wetlands), said the birds start migration to Kashmir from the end of October and leave the valley in mid-March.

“Some birds are still present in wetlands and departure of birds remain usual as of previous years”, she said. (KNO)
