Lucknow building collapse: Around 12 rescued, search operations underway, say officials

Lucknow: Around a dozen people who were trapped after a four-storey residential building collapsed in Lucknow’s Hazratganj on Tuesday have been rescued and a search is on for others, officials said here.
An Army team has also arrived at the spot, they said.
Uttar Pradesh DGP D S Chauhan, who was at the site, said, “Around 12 people have been rescued. This is the hour of patience, not the time to rush because when you are cutting a building, it should not create any other problem. Rescue work is being carried out in a very scientific way, and I am confident that those who are trapped inside (under the debris) will be saved.” Asked what may have caused the collapse, Chauhan said, “The reasons will be known when the experts and the police carry out their investigations. As of now, as per our assumption, which is based on feedback from family members, around five-seven people are still inside (the debris).” The DGP added that the rescue operations will continue for another 12 hours.
District Magistrate Suryapal Gangwar said NDRF and SDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations. “So far, 11 people have been rescued, and five more are possibly trapped. As per the clues obtained from the site of the collapse, the NDRF and SDRF teams are cutting the walls, and after cutting the walls, (trapped) people will be rescued.” “Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is keeping a watch on the rescue operations. The defence minister has also given instructions. An Army team has arrived here for rescue work,” he added.
Asked if the building collapse may have been caused by an earthquake earlier in the day, he said, “This is not the right time to deliberate on the reasons. At present, the rescue operation is going on.” He added that contact has been established with two people who are trapped under the debris and oxygen supply has been arranged for them.
“All the people who have been rescued are safe and under stable treatment. Seven rescued people were sent to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Civil Hospital,” a police official said at the spot of the incident.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who earlier talked about the death of three people in the incident, retracted his comment.
Talking to PTI, he said there were initial reports of three people in an unconscious condition and were feared dead.

“But now information is coming that nobody is dead. Those rescued from the building have been moved to hospitals,” Pathak said.
“The rescue operation is going on. NDRF-SDRF personnel have arrived at the spot. Police jawans and fire brigade personnel have also arrived,” he said.
The Lucknow DM said local people informed the authorities that some work was going on in the basement of the building.
A 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted the remote mountainous districts in western Nepal on Tuesday, killing one person and damaging dozens of houses in the region, Nepalese officials had said.
Meteorological department sources here, when contacted, said that the depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometres, and its distance was 294 kilometres NNE (North North-East) from Lucknow.
Meanwhile, Adityanath directed officials to provide adequate treatment to the injured.
Directions have also been issued to hospitals to stay alert.
Pathak further said that the four-storey building had around 12 flats, out of which nine had occupants.
Many senior civil and police officials, including Principal Secretary to the chief minister Sanjay Prasad and DGP D S Chauhan are on the spot.

Secunderabad fire: Building to be demolished amid search for remains of 2 men

Hyderabad: Municipal authorities in Hyderabad have decided to demolish the six storeyed building which was gutted in a huge fire three days ago while the search continued on Sunday for remains of two missing persons.
For the fourth day rescue workers continued their operation to trace the remains of two men in the rubble at the commercial building at Nallagutta on Ministers Road in Secunderabad.
Skeletal remains of one person were found on Saturday and the same were preserved at Gandhi Hospital for DNA analysis.
Three workers Waseem, Zaheer and Junaid were reported missing after the huge fire broke out in the building. Some survivors said the three persons had gone to collect their belongings but were trapped.
Two fire service officers were injured while trying to douse the fire on Thursday. It took eight hours for the fire to be brought under control. As many as 23 fire tenders from various fire stations in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad were pressed into service.
With smoke still emanating from some parts of the building and small fires getting reignited due to inflammable material, the personnel of Disaster Response Force (DRF) and fire services were moving cautiously.
The rescue teams were using drone cameras to collect the footage from different floors and accordingly plan their operation.
The massive fire, which broke out on January 19 and raged for over eight hours, has weakened the structure and experts have warned that it may collapse any time.

The officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have decided to demolish the structure. However, they made it clear that they will wait till the remains of two missing workers are traced.
Massive debris and huge amounts of inflammable material has made the task of rescue workers difficult.
Officials said the latest technology will be used to demolish the building and all precautions will be taken to ensure that the adjoining buildings are not damaged.
GHMC Town Planning wing has placed caution notice outside the building warning people not to come closer to it.
The notice states that the building is in dangerous and hazardous condition. The owners and inmates of the building have already been asked to vacate immediately as it is likely to collapse at any moment.
The adjoining buildings have also been vacated as a precautionary measure.

DOJ search of Biden’s Delaware home results in more seized documents

Bauer said the paperwork was from Biden’s time in the Senate and as vice president. Justice Department officials also took handwritten notes from the vice presidential years, he said.
“DOJ had full access to the president’s home, including personally handwritten notes, files, papers, binders, memorabilia, to-do lists, schedules, and reminders going back decades,” he said.
Bauer added that Justice Department officials requested that the search not be made public in advance, in accordance with its standard procedures, and that the president’s legal team agreed to cooperate.
“The President’s lawyers and White House Counsel’s Office will continue to cooperate with DOJ and the Special Counsel to help ensure this process is conducted swiftly and efficiently,” Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, said in a separate statement Saturday evening.
Joseph Fitzpatrick, a spokesperson for the U.S attorney originally tapped to oversee matters connected to the records, said “the FBI executed a planned, consensual search of the President’s residence in Wilmington, Delaware.”
In an interview on MSNBC Saturday evening, Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House counsel’s office, confirmed the search was “consensual and cooperative” and said no warrant was involved.
Sams said Biden told aides to “offer up DOJ access to the house,” leading to Friday’s search. “He [has] proactively offered access to these homes to the Department of Justice to conduct a thorough search,” he said.
Sams said he could not speak “to the underlying content” of any of the documents taken from Biden’s home.

The search was part of a special counsel investigation into the president’s handling of classified materials found in November at his office in Washington and in December and January at his home in Wilmington. The sporadic revelations about the documents over the past several weeks have helped keep the story in the headlines.
And that steady drip of additional information that has widened the scope of the probe into Biden’s handling of classified material from his time as vice president has raised fresh frustration among some Democrats.
Specifically, they’ve questioned why the search wasn’t conducted sooner and more thoroughly, especially after Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, became enmeshed in a similar inquiry about documents kept at his private Mar-a-Lago club and residence in Florida. The White House’s communications strategy around the matter has also come under harsh scrutiny.
The president and first lady Jill Biden were not present for the search. Both are spending the weekend at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
Asked Friday whether their travel was related to the probe into classified material, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said she would “continue to be prudent and consistent and respect the Department of Justice process.”
“As it relates to his travel, as you know, he often travels to Delaware on the weekends. I just don’t have anything else to share,” Jean-Pierre said.
Attorney General Merrick Garland recently appointed former federal prosecutor Robert Hur as a special counsel to investigate any potential wrongdoing surrounding the Biden documents. Garland previously assigned John Lausch, the U.S. Attorney for Chicago, to lead the probe.

Julian Sands: helicopter search under way for missing actor

The search for British actor Julian Sands continues nearly a week after he was reported missing while hiking in a treacherous area of California’s San Gabriel Mountains, where at least two other hikers have already perished this winter.
The search for the 65-year-old actor is currently being conducted “via helicopter only”, the San Bernardino county sheriff’s department said Friday afternoon, because the risk of avalanches around Mt Baldy has continued to make on-the-ground rescue efforts too dangerous.
There is currently no timeline for ending the search for Sands, department spokesperson Gloria Huerta said on Friday.
The Mt Baldy bowl area where Sands was hiking has been a deadly one this winter, with at least two hikers killed in the area after falling and injuring themselves in the past month, according to the sheriff’s department.
One of the two hikers who died, identified by local media as Crystal Paula Gonzalez, was an experienced hiker, known to family and friends as “the hiking queen,” CBS News Los Angeles reported. Authorities said that Gonzalez, who had previously summited Mt Whitney, one of the highest peaks in the United States, slipped and fell more than 500ft while hiking on 8 January, and died of her injuries on the mountain.
Search and rescue teams have responded to more than two dozen different incidents of lost or injured hikers in the Mt Baldy area over the past month, with authorities this week warning even experienced hikers to stay away from the mountain during “extremely dangerous” conditions.
Sands, an avid hiker and longtime resident of the Los Angeles area, was reported missing around 7.30pm last Friday. Pings from his cell phone logged in subsequent days only showed his movements on 13 January, the sheriff’s department said late Friday.
Initial ground and helicopter searches of one of his possible locations that day did not locate any evidence of Sands, the department said. Further analysis of Sands’ cell phone location data is ongoing, but, “Thus far, no workable leads have been developed”, the department said.

At this point, there is no data that indicates Sands’ whereabouts after Friday, the day he was reported missing, Huerta said. His vehicle was located in the Mt Baldy area, and has been towed by his family, she said.
“Additional air searches will be conducted,” the department said.

As California has been buffeted by winter storms, weather conditions in the mountain have inhibited attempts to assist missing and injured hikers, including Sands. Rescue crews looking for Sands on the ground had to be pulled off the mountain on Saturday night because of the dangerous weather. Weather conditions also inhibited the efforts to evacuate Gonzalez, the injured hiker, off the mountain to a hospital, a medic told CBS News Los Angeles. She left behind five children, the news outlet reported.
More than 21 people have died across California in the storms of the past few weeks, and others, including a five-year-old boy swept away in flood waters, remain missing.
Sands, who is known for his roles in The Killing Fields, A Room with a View, and Naked Lunch, has lived in the Los Angeles area for years with his wife, the writer Eugenia Citkowitz, with whom he has a son. He also has two daughters with former Evening Standard and BBC Radio 4 Today program editor Sarah Sands, to whom he was married from 1984 to 1987.
Other Hollywood actors, writers and producers, have posted their prayers for Sands and his family on social media, praising him as an inspiration and a friend.
“Keep candles burning for his safe return from the mountain he loves,” actor Matthew Modine wrote on Twitter.

Search Operation Launched In Kulgam Town After Suspicious Movement

SRINAGAR: A search operation was launched by security forces after observing suspicious movement in Damhal Hanjipora village of south Kashmir’a Kulgam district on Friday, police said.
Quoting an official the news agency KNO reported that suspicious movement was reported in the late afternoon in main town of DH Pora.
He said cordon and search operation was launched while some speculative shots were also fired.
The official said searches were going on when reports last came in.
