Discovered in the deep: the superbuilder sea anemones that make verandahs

    [ad_1]

Deep in the Kumano Sea off the south-eastern coast of Japan, hermit crabs crawl around sporting what look like pearly pink flowers on their shells. But these are not floral arrangements – they are members of a newly discovered species of sea anemone, Stylobates calcifer, which live on the hermit crabs’ shells.

This kind of sea anemone and hermit crab cohabitation is not unique: dozens of anemone species live exclusively with hermit crabs. It’s a win-win situation – the anemones’ petal-like stinging tentacles protect the crabs from predators, while they hitch rides to new feeding grounds and get leftover scraps of the crab’s food.

But this new anemone species goes one step further – it extends the hermit crab’s home. The anemone secretes a covering over the snail shell in which the crab lives and, when it reaches the edges, it just keeps going – rather like building the crab a veranda on the front of its house.

An anemone on a hermit crab’s shell
A hermit crab was filmed in an aquarium spending almost two days pushing its anemone into letting go of the old shell and moving to a new shell. Photograph: Akihiro Yoshikawa

And they will not just build extensions for anyone. “This sea anemone is home for only one hermit crab species,” says Akihiro Yoshikawa, from Kagoshima University, who discovered the anemone when several were brought up in trawlers’ nets from 100 to 400 metres (330-1,300ft) down.

So it is perhaps no surprise that hermit crabs are keen to keep hold of their petally pals and, when the time comes for a crab to move into a new snail shell, it takes its anemone with it.

Yoshikawa named the sea anemone calcifer after a character in one of his favourite childhood films, the 2004 animation Howl’s Moving Castle. The film is an adaptation of the fantasy novel of the same name in which Calcifer, a fire demon, is bound by a magical pact to the wizard Howl’s castle, which moves about from place to place – much like a hermit crab.

But moving one’s sea anemone is no easy task. Yoshikawa was lucky enough to film a crab-calcifer anemone duo in an aquarium in his laboratory as they moved shells – something nobody had ever seen before. The crab took almost two days to painstakingly pinch, prod and cajole the anemone until it eventually let go of the old shell and fixed on to the new one.

Yoshikawa found plenty of crabs without stinging companions, which suggests calcifer sea anemones are in short supply in the deep sea. This is probably another reason why the crabs go to such trouble to keep their anemones. But it does not explain why hermit crabs risk moving shells when their anemones could so easily be stolen mid-transfer – especially when these handy shell friends can build extensions for growing crabs.

Some of the answer may be that the anemone’s expanded shell is not an ideal home for the hermit crabs. “I think the crabs consider the anemone’s shell as a temporary home,” says Yoshikawa, noting that the extended structure “is very thin and not strong compared with the snail shell”.

Plus, moving house is a good way to get rid of unwanted visitors. Hundreds of other species live on and inside hermit crab shells, but not all of them are welcome. Scale worms take up residence, stealing the hermit crabs’ food and gorging themselves on their eggs. Yoshikawa thinks the hermit crabs may swap shells to escape.

Curious to know what calcifer sea anemones eat, Yoshikawa offered his captive specimen a selection of delicacies – including skipjack tuna and live shrimp – which it mostly ignored. He thinks the anemones swallow small particles of organic matter that fall down into the deep sea, known as “marine snow”. The anemones fix on to the backs of hermit crabs, hoisting themselves off the seabed with their mouths upturned in an ideal snow-catching position.

South Korea repels North Korean patrol boat after sea intrusion

    [ad_1]

    koreas tensions 54604

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the South Korean military is closely monitoring North Korean military activities while preparing for various possibilities of provocations.

South Korea’s navy has often fired warning shots to repel North Korean vessels crossing the countries’ poorly marked sea border, but there also have been some deadly clashes over the years. South Korea blamed North Korea for an attack on a South Korean warship that killed 46 sailors in 2010, but the North has denied responsibility.

Saturday’s intrusion came amid heightened tensions in the region as the pace of both North Korea’s weapons demonstrations and the U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises aimed at countering the North Korean threat have intensified in a cycle of tit-for-tat.

The South Korean and U.S. militaries will conduct another large-scale joint exercise from next week involving some 110 warplanes, including advanced F-35 fighter jets. Seoul’s Defense Ministry said the aerial drills, which will be begin Monday and continue through April 28, are aimed at sharpening combined operational abilities and demonstrating the allies’ joint defense posture in the face of North Korean threats.

North Korea last week staged one of its most provocative military displays in years by test-launching what it described as a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile, which if perfected could potentially give the North a more powerful and harder-to-detect weapon targeting the mainland United States.

South Korean officials also say North Korea has not been responding to South Korean calls on a set of cross-border inter-Korean hotlines for more than a week, which raises concerns about potential kinetic provocations as communications on those channels are meant to prevent accidental clashes along the rivals’ sea borders.

The U.S. and South Korean militaries conducted their biggest field exercises in years last month and separately held joint naval and air force drills involving a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group and nuclear-capable U.S. bombers. The exercises prompted fierce protests from the North, which describes those drills as invasion rehearsals while continuously using them as a pretext to push forward its own weapons development.

Since the start of 2022, North Korea has test-fired more than 100 missiles into the sea, including three different types of ICBMs and various shorter-range missiles it describes as battlefield nuclear weapons, as it tries to display a dual ability to conduct nuclear strikes on both the U.S. mainland and South Korea.

South Korea has patrolled waters around the Northern Limit Line for decades after it was drawn up by the U.N. command at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. North Korea does not recognize the line and insists upon a boundary that encroaches deeply into waters currently controlled by the South.

  • North fires ballistic missile into sea between Koreas, Japan

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters he planned a National Security Council meeting to discuss the launch. Asked over the accuracy of Japan’s information dissemination about future North Korean launches, Kishida said the government is checking related information including alerts.

North Korea commonly test-launches missiles toward the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. All its past ICBM launches were made in the area, but on elevated trajectories to avoid neighboring countries.

South Korea and Japan typically don’t issue evacuation orders for North Korean launches unless they determine weapons flew in the direction of their territories.

But after Thursday’s launch, the Japanese government urged people on the northernmost island of Hokkaido to seek shelter. The government then corrected and retracted its missile alert, saying its analysis showed there was no possibility of a missile landing near Hokkaido.

It was unclear why Japan issued the order for a missile that didn’t fall near the island, but the incident suggested it was being cautious about North Korea’s evolving missile threats.

Last October, Japanese authorities issued a similar evacuation order when a North Korean intermediate-range missile flew over Japan in a launch that demonstrated the potential to reach the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam. At the time, Japanese authorities alerted residents in its northeastern regions to seek shelter and halted trains, although no damages were reported before the weapon landed in the Pacific.

Thursday’s launch came days after its leader Kim Jong Un vowed to enhance his nuclear arsenal in more “practical and offensive” ways.

North Korea has launched about 100 missiles this year and in 2022, many of them nuclear-capable weapons that place the U.S. mainland, South Korea and Japan within striking distance.

  • Illegal ‘dargah’ in Mahim sea razed post Raj Thackeray’s threat; AIMIM reacts

Illegal ‘dargah’ in Mahim sea razed post Raj Thackeray’s threat; AIMIM reacts

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Barely 12 hours after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray’s dramatic revelations of an unauthorised ‘dargah’ coming up in the Arabian Sea off Mahim, the BMC rushed a team there and demolished it, here on Thursday.

A team of BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) along with a heavy police bandobast, a JCB and other equipment, swooped onto the so-called ‘mazaar’ (grave) of an unknown person that had quietly manifested on a tiny rocky islet a few metres away from the Mahim sea-shore.

The BMC-police teams examined it thoroughly, removed the flagpoles with green and white flags, other paraphernalia on and around the ‘mazaar’ and then rolled a bulldozer which reduced it to dust.

Earlier, they also discussed the matter with the trustees of the 600-year-old Hazrat Makhdum Shah Baba Radiallahuahhu, Mahim, which offered their full support to curb any illegalities on the islet nearby.

The purported ‘mazaar’, covered with a green cloth, garlands and flower-chadars, used to attract a few devotees who would wade through knee-deep sea-water for a few metres to visit the site and offer prayers there.

The development came the morning after Raj Thackeray pulled the ears of the state government, Mumbai Police and civic administration, and drew their attention to the potential security threat lurking there.

MNS Spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande welcomed the BMC action while state Bharatiya Janata Party President Chandrashekhar Bawankule congratulated Raj Thackeray for highlighting the matter which opened the eyes of the government.

He served an MNS-style ultimatum that unless the ‘dargah’ is demolished within a month, the MNS would go and erect a Ganpati Temple at the same spot.

Hinting at security implications, Thackeray had roared: “The Mahim Police Station is close by, the BMC officials keep moving around there… Yet, since the past two years this ‘dargah’ is blatantly coming up in the sea… Another ‘Haji Ali Dargah’… And there’s nobody to talk about it?”

Returning with his old style of addressing rallies with a visual component — ‘Laav re te video’ (Play that video) after five years — Raj ordered playing a clip, apparently shot with a drone, hovering around and over the tiny islet, clearly showing the ‘mazaar’ that has cropped up in the Mahim sea.

The video showed images of some green and white flags, fluttering on a tall pole and on strings around, a handful of men and women ‘devotees’ paying their respects at the makeshift grave of the unknown person reportedly resting there.

AIMIM questions intention behind razing of illegal dargah:

The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) state President and MP Syed Imtiaz Jaleel has fully supported the BMC’s act of razing an illegal “dargah” which was coming up in the Arabian Sea off Mahim, here on Thursday.

However, he questioned the honesty of the intentions behind razing the ‘dargah in the Mahim sea and said it appeared to be an “understanding” between the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), just as the holy month of fasting, Ramzan, starts.

“We have no objections if the structure ‘dargah’ was illegal and it has been demolished… But what about hundreds of other similar unauthorised constructions of various communities that keep cropping up all over the state? They should also be dealt with similarly,” Jaleel told the media.

On the ‘dargah’ demolition issue today, he pointed accusing fingers at Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and their “puppet” MNS President Raj Thackeray of acting in tandem to build up passions on Ramzan-eve.

He wondered how, if the alleged “mazaar” on a tiny islet was coming up openly since the past two years, the state government, BMC, Police and elected representatives remained silent, doing nothing to stop it.

“I feel that Fadnavis may have asked Raj to raise the issue in his Gudi Padwa rally, and he would get it (dargah) removed the next morning… This way Raj’s stature would go up before his supporters, and simultaneously the Sena-BJP wouldn’t spoil its image before the Muslim community,” Jaleel claimed.

He raised doubts over “Raj’s real motives” behind raising the issue of mosque loudspeakers just before Ramadan month and keeping quiet the rest of the year, and asking for the Muslim community’s stand on such issues.

“But, what’s his locus standi…? Is he the CM, Deputy CM, a Minister, MP, MLA? Who is he…?” asked Jaleel, who has recently made overtures to the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance of Congress-Nationalist Congress Party-Shiv Sena (UBT).

  • Turkish President announces extension of Black Sea grain deal

Turkish President announces extension of Black Sea grain deal

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday announced an extension of the Black Sea grain deal, CNN reported. However, he did not reveal details regarding the expiration date of the deal.

The deal was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey last July to ensure safe passage for ships carrying grain exports from Ukraine. The deal was set to expire today.

Speaking at an event in Turkey’s Canakkale province, Erdogan said, “As a result of our negotiations with both parties, we extended the agreement period,” as per the CNN report.

Turkish President Erdogan thanked the Russian and Ukrainian parties as well as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for their efforts to extend the agreement.

“This agreement, which has provided the shipment of 25 million tons of grain to the world markets with more than 800 ships to date, is of vital importance for the stability of the global food supply,” Erdogan said as per the CNN report.

“I would like to thank the Russian and Ukrainian parties and the UN secretary general for their efforts to extend the agreement once again,” he added.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “We remain strongly committed to both agreements and we urge all sides to redouble their efforts to implement them fully,” according to the CNN report.

The agreement comes after Russia on Monday said that it had agreed to a 60-day extension of the deal. The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the move as a “goodwill gesture.” On Thursday, the UN stressed that the agreement stated it would be extended for 120 days rather than 60.

In July last year, Ukraine and Russia signed the agreement following months of negotiations brokered by the UN and Turkey. The agreement allowed the resumption of exports of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea.

According to the statement released by United Nations, the Black Sea grain initiative allowed commercial food and fertilizer (including ammonia) exports from three key Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea – Odesa, Chornomorsk, Yuzhny/Pivdennyi. The Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) was established to monitor the implementation of the initiative.

  • US drone crashes into Black Sea after collision with Russian fighter jet

US drone crashes into Black Sea after collision with Russian fighter jet

    [ad_1]

A US drone has crashed into the Black Sea following a collision with a Russian fighter jet, heightening tensions between the two countries amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

According to the US military, the MQ-9 Reaper drone was on a routine mission in international airspace when it was intercepted by two Russian jets. The unmanned aircraft was hit by one of the Russian aircraft and crashed into the sea, resulting in a complete loss of the drone.

Russia has denied that the two planes made direct contact, instead blaming the incident on the drone’s “sharp manoeuvre”. The country’s defence ministry also claimed that the MQ-9 Reaper was flying with its transponders turned off, preventing it from being tracked by communications devices.

The US has summoned the Russian ambassador to Washington to protest against the incident, which occurred at approximately 07:03 Central European Time (06:03 GMT) on Tuesday. The collision followed several instances of the Su-27 fighter jets dumping fuel on the drone in an “unprofessional and environmentally unsound manner”, according to the US military.

While the US and UK have increased reconnaissance and surveillance flights over the Black Sea in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this incident marks a significant escalation. The key question is whether the collision was a deliberate attempt to bring down the drone or an attempt to disrupt its work.

US military commanders have warned that the incident could lead to miscalculation and unintended escalation, citing a “pattern of dangerous actions by Russian pilots” in the region. If the collision is found to have been a deliberate attack by Russia, it could be viewed as a provocation and test of the US response.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has raised tensions between Russia and the West, with allies working to prevent a direct confrontation. However, this incident highlights the increasing risk of direct confrontation between the two countries. The US will now need to carefully evaluate its response to the incident.

US accuses Russia of downing drone over Black Sea

    [ad_1]

Moscow: A US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone was brought down over the Black Sea, after what its European Command (EUCOM) described as “an unsafe and unprofessional intercept” by two Russian jets, media reports said.

The “Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance” platform was “operating within international airspace” when the airplanes approached, EUCOM said in a statement. One of the Su-27s “struck the propeller of the MQ-9”, so the operators ditched the drone into the sea.

“Several times before the collision, the Su-27s dumped fuel on and flew in front of the MQ-9 in a reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner,” the US military complained, accusing the Russians of “a lack of competence”, RT reported.

General James Hecker, the commander of US Air Forces in Europe and Africa, said the drone was “conducting routine operations in international airspace” and that the crash had resulted in a “complete loss” of the MQ-9.

EUCOM said the US “routinely” operates drone flights in international airspace to “bolster collective European defence and security” and “support Allied, partner, and US national objectives”. Hecker said the flights would continue, calling on the Russians “to conduct themselves professionally and safely”.

The Kremlin and the Russian Defence Ministry have yet to comment on the alleged incident.

The US has admitted to providing Ukraine with intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information in the conflict against Russia, while insisting it is not a party to the hostilities. US and NATO spy aircraft routinely fly over the Black Sea and approach Crimea, sometimes just before Ukrainian forces launch attacks on the Russian peninsula, RT reported.

Last week, a US strategic bomber flew a practice run for a missile attack on St. Petersburg, while staying in international and NATO airspace.
