Congress won’t raise Savarkar issue due to MVA allies’ differing views: Prithviraj

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Veteran Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has said that his party has agreed not to raise the issue of V D Savarkar since the three Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners hold different views on the late Hindutva ideologue.

He made the statement in an interview to PTI days after former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray gave a warning to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a public meeting last month, saying that the “insult” of Savarkar will not be tolerated. In his speech, Thackeray said he considered Savarkar as his “idol” and hence Gandhi should refrain from insulting him.

Gandhi has often accused Savarkar of “apologising” to the British to get out of jail, and has routinely shot back at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demands for an apology by claiming he was a Gandhi and not Savarkar to seek mercy.

Replying to a query on the issue, Chavan said the Congress has agreed not to raise the issue of Savarkar as there were divergent views on him among the MVA allies. The MVA comprises the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena.

“Let the people decide about the truth of the freedom struggle. There is nothing to be apologetic about. We agreed to disagree and agreed not to raise the issue since our partners hold different views on Savarkar,” the former chief minister said.

On being asked if the Savarkar issue had been put to rest by the Congress after it was given on platter to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Chavan said his party did not provide any issue on platter to the saffron party.

The BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which are currently in power in Maharashtra, on Sunday started taking out Savarkar Gaurav Yatras in each district of the state to honour Savarkar’s contribution to the country and to counter Rahul Gandhi’s criticism against him.

Maha CM Shinde slams Rahul, jibes at Uddhav, hails Modi at Savarkar Gaurav Yatra

    [ad_1]

Thane: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday led the ‘Savarkar Gaurav Yatra’ in his hometown Thane in which hundreds of people took part to honour late Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar.

The Bharatiya Janata Party and Shinde-led Shiv Sena had last month announced that Savarkar Gaurav Yatras would be taken out in each district of Maharashtra to honour Savarkar’s contribution to the country and to counter Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s criticism against him.

On Sunday, the yatra participants, wearing saffron caps with ‘Mi Savarkar’ (I am Savarkar) and other messages were written on them, paid floral tributes to Savarkar at the Ram Ganesh Gadkari Rangayatan auditorium in Thane city from where the yatra commenced.

On the culmination of the rally, addressing a gathering, Shinde slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his repeated attacks on Savarkar and said insults to freedom fighters were akin to insulting the nation.

People are angry to see some forces trying to malign Hindutva by attacking Savarkar, Shinde said.

“We have noticed citizens expressing disappointment over some people consistently insulting Savarkar. An insult of Savarkar is the insult of every Indian. I openly condemn people like Rahul Gandhi for his tirade against Savarkar. I dare anyone to live a day in the Cellular Jail the way Savarkar was jailed,” Shinde said.

Without taking names, he also swiped at Shiv Sena (UBT) Uddhav Thackeray. “Balasaheb Thackeray had hit the effigy of Mani Shankar Aiyar once (for such remarks). Unfortunately, some people who claim Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy are now sitting with those (Congress’ Rahul Gandhi) who have consistently attacked Savarkar,” Shinde said.

Praising Narendra Modi, the chief minister said Hindutva was seen as an aggression against minorities, but the prime minister had brought back its glory post 2014.

“Hindutva is not against any religion. But some people deliberately keep misinterpreting it,” Shinde remarked. A tableau displaying information related to Savarkar was also part of the yatra.

Shinde and some other leaders of the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP coalition participated in the yatra on a makeshift ‘chariot’ with a large photograph of Savarkar in the background. The vehicle was decorated with flowers and followed by supporters riding motorbikes with saffron flags on them.

The CM waved to citizens as the yatra moved to cover four Assembly segments in the city. Flowers were showered on the participants as several of them moved around Thane city using more than 200 motorbikes and around 100 auto-rickshaws raising slogans in praise of Savarkar and the country.

BJP leader Dr Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Thane MLA Sanjay Kelkar, Thane BJP chief and MLC Niranjan Davkhare, former mayor Naresh Mhaske, Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik and many other local leaders of the ruling coalition participated in the yatra.
Huge hoardings with pictures of Savarkar were put up in the city, patriotic songs were played during the yatra and rangolis (colourful patterns) were made at various places.

Rahul Gandhi’s “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone” remark has drawn fire from the BJP.

The former Congress chief had made the remark while addressing a press conference after being disqualified from the Lok Sabha and amid BJP’s demands for his apology for allegedly insulting Other Backward Classes (OBCs) with his “Modi surname remark” that got him convicted for criminal defamation.

Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule last month said his party will take out Savarkar Gaurav Yatras’ in all 288 Assembly segments of the state from March 30 to April 6, and apart from senior BJP leaders including Devendra Fadnavis, CM Shinde and 40 MLAs of Shiv Sena will also participate.

“We will reach out to people with the history of Savarkar and how he is being insulted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and MPCC chief Nana Patole,” Bawankule had said.

Aurangabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Gaurav Yatra’ in support of late Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district will start from April 2, BJP’s local leadership announced on Wednesday.

This came a day after the BJP announced that Savarkar Gaurav Yatras would be taken out in each district to honour Savarkar’s contribution to the country and to counter Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s criticism against him.

The Savarkar Gaurav Yatra in Aurangabad will commence on April 2 from Nirala Bazar where the statue of Savarkar is located, said BJP’s city president Shirish Boralkar. The Yatra will go on in one constituency for two days, he said.

In a press meet, BJP leader and state Co-operative Minister Atul Save said, “For the past few days, leaders of opposition parties are using insulting words against V D Savarkar. The people of Maharashtra cannot tolerate this for long. Therefore, BJP has decided to take out Savarkar Gaurav Yatra in every constituency,” he said.

The first rally of Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders is also scheduled in Aurangabad on April 2 on Marathwada Sanskrutik Mandal ground. Former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, NCP leader Ajit Pawar and Congress state unit president Nana Patole will address the rally here.

Pawar steps in amid row over Rahul’s Savarkar remark, asks Cong to tone down attack

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid strains in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi alliance over Rahul Gandhi’s strident criticism of V D Savarkar, NCP chief Sharad Pawar has stepped in to play the peacemaker by conveying the Shiv Sena’s concerns on the issue to the Congress leadership.

Opposition leaders said Congress has agreed to tone down its criticism of Savarkar, which has led to unease among the NCP and Shiv Sena, its alliance partners in Maharashtra.

Pawar raised the issue during a meeting of opposition leaders convened by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday evening and made it clear that targeting Savarkar, a revered figure in Maharashtra, would not help the opposition alliance in the state, two leaders who attended the meeting told PTI.

Former Congress Presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were present at the meeting along with leaders of opposition parties.

Pawar also told Rahul Gandhi that Savarkar was never a member of the RSS and underscored that the real fight of the opposition parties was with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.

As the BJP stepped up attack on Rahul Gandhi and sought his apology for “maligning” India on his recent tour to the UK, the former Lok Sabha member from Wayanad had said that he was not Savarkar and would not apologise.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray had slammed Gandhi for his attack on Savarkar and said his outfit will not tolerate any insult of the freedom fighter.

The Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena had skipped the meeting convened by Kharge as a mark of protest against Gandhi’s remarks targeting Savarkar.

Prove Savarkar apologised: Hindutva ideologue’s grandson to Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The grandson of late Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar has sought action against Rahul Gandhi for his comments and also challenged the Congress leader to show documents that prove he had apologised to the British.

Gandhi’s “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone” remark has drawn fire from BJP.

The former Congress chief made this remark while addressing a press conference after being disqualified from Lok Sabha.

Calling such comments childish, Savarkar’s grandson Ranjit Savarkar on Monday said, “Rahul Gandhi is saying he won’t apologise as he isn’t Savarkar. I challenge him to show documents that prove Savarkar apologised”.

“Using the names of patriots to promote politics is wrong and deplorable. Action must be taken,” Savarkar said.

Uddhav Thackeray to skip Congress meet over Rahul’s ‘Savarkar’ remark

    [ad_1]

In a protest against Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Savarkar remark’, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief and former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday announced the party’s decision to skip Congress’ dinner meet in Delhi.

Uddhav on Sunday had warned Gandhi stating that he considers Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar as his “idol”, and asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to refrain from “insulting” him.

He said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance of three parties – Sena (UBT), Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – was formed to protect democracy and it was necessary to work unitedly for it.

Addressing a rally in the Muslim-dominated textile town of Malegaon in Nashik district of north Maharashtra, Thackeray also said that deliberate attempts were on to provoke Rahul Gandhi.

“Savarkar is our idol and his insult will not be tolerated if we have to fight together to protect our democracy. Savarkar suffered unimaginable torture in the Andaman cellular jail for 14 years. We can only read the sufferings. It is a form of sacrifice,” he said.

”I want to tell Rahul Gandhi that we have come together to save our country’s democracy and its Constitution. But you are deliberately being provoked. If we allow this time to get wasted, then democracy will cease to exist. 2024 will be the last election,” he added.

Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. Addressing a press conference in Delhi over his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said, “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone”.

In an instance of surprise and opposition unity against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification, Trinamool Congress leaders joined the Congress’ strategy meeting in the Parliament, dressed in black as a sign of protest.

Trinamool leaders Prasun Banerjee and Jawahar Sircar came out in protest against Gandhi’s disqualification. “The question of walking together is due symbolism, which we undertook today – a special mark of solidarity against coordinated and undemocratic attacks on everyone,” Sircar had said.

  • Rahul Gandhi cannot be Savarkar even in his wildest dream: Anurag Thakur

Rahul Gandhi cannot be Savarkar even in his wildest dream: Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur, on Sunday launched a scathing attack on former Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for the latter’s remarks that he is not Savarkar.

Thakur, in a series of tweets, reminded Rahul that he could never become “Veer Savarkar even in his wildest dreams” because Veer Savarkar’s name stands for grit, determination, staunch patriotism for Bharat, selflessness and commitment to the motherland.

Savarkar neither spent six months in a year holidaying abroad nor did he seek intervention from foreign powers, the Union Minister said.

When Savarkar went to Britain, he waged a war against the British in order to free mother India from slavery, Thakur added.

He said such was the respect for Veer Savarkar’s patriotism that none other than Shaheed Bhagat Singh had gone to Ratnagiri himself and arranged a Punjabi version of the immortal book ‘India’s First War of Independence’ by Savarkar to have it printed in Punjab.

He said that Savarkar did not earn such immortal respect from his countrymen for nothing. All the well-known leaders and thinkers of those times were in awe of Savarkar’s patriotism and courage.

The BJP leader particularly mentioned the Kakinada session of the Congress in 1923 where a special resolution was also passed in honour of Veer Savarkar.

Thakur also asserted that Rahul Gandhi had not only tried to malign a hero like Veer Savarkar but has also forgotten the legacy of his grandmother, late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

“Had Rahul Gandhi read the letter written by Indira Gandhi extolling the heroism of Veer Savarkar, he would realise his mistake in comparing himself with such a patriot. Indira Gandhi not only recognised Veer Savarkar’s contribution but also released a stamp in his memory,” Thakur added.

The Union Minister also posted the link of a documentary produced during Indira Gandhi’s tenure.

He reiterated that when no patriot of those times said anything negative about Veer Savarkar and instead admired his patriotism and courage, Rahul Gandhi is insulting the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh and his own grandmother by criticising Veer Savarkar mindlessly.

Savarkar our idol, won’t tolerate insult: Uddhav to Rahul

    [ad_1]

Malegaon: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said he considers Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar as his “idol”, and asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to refrain from “insulting” him.

Thackeray said he supported Gandhi for his Bharat Jodo Yatra.

“Rahul Gandhi spoke well at his press conference yesterday. He raised valid questions about whom does Rs 20,000 crore belong. But the government doesn’t want to answer,” he said.

During his press conference on Saturday, Gandhi said the moot questions remain that who invested Rs 20,000 crore in Adani shell firms and what is the businessman’s relationship with the prime minister.

Targeting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Thackeray alleged that those who have no connection with the country’s freedom movement were attempting to finish off democracy.

Thackeray, who was addressing his second rally here after Khed in Ratnagiri district since losing the party name and symbol to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, said he was fighting to save democracy and freedom.

“The fight is not about me becoming the chief minister again,” he said.

Thackeray also said NCP leader Anil Deshmukh’s six-year-old granddaughter was questioned by probe agencies and even Lalu Prasad Yadav’s pregnant daughter-in-law was quizzed till she fainted.

“If you criticise those in power, police will be after you,” he said.

“Modi is not India. Did our freedom fighters lay down their lives for this?” he asked.

The former CM wondered how good and honest people in the BJP were tolerating the corrupt people brought into their fold from other parties.

Hitting out at CM Shinde, Thackeray said he doesn’t regret losing the chief minister’s post, but a government doing good work was shamelessly toppled.

“Farmers are facing a lot of hardships and the Shinde government is doing nothing to ease their problems,” he alleged.

Thackeray said he has been robbed of his party’s name and symbol, but traitors can never rob him of the love and affection of the people.

He said his government has taken several steps for the development of the textile sector in Malegaon and farmers and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During the pandemic, I had spoken to the religious heads in Malegaon and everyone here cooperated with the government initiatives to control the spread of the virus,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi must be punished for insulting V D Savarkar: Maha CM

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday claimed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has insulted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the OBC community and Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar and should be “punished”.

Replying to a debate on the Opposition sponsored “Last Week” resolution in the Legislative Assembly, the chief minister said the law under which Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as an MP was enacted by the Congress-led UPA government and the Modi government has implemented it.

“Rahul Gandhi has been convicted and stands automatically disqualified as a member of Lok Sabha. But he continues to insult V D Savarkar by saying that he is not Savarkar to apologise. Who does he think he is? He must be punished,” Shinde said.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP after a Surat court on Thursday sentenced him to two years in jail for criminal defamation over his 2019 “Modi surname” remark. The sentence is suspended for 30 days to allow Rahul to appeal in a higher court.

Shinde said Rahul Gandhi had insulted the OBC (Other Backward Classes) community by targeting the prime minister.

“Savarkar is a patriot. Why insult a patriotic person? Maharashtra will not tolerate the insult of PM Modi and Savarkar. People will not let him (Rahul Gandhi) move on the streets of Maharashtra,” he said.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi over his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi said that “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone”.

Shinde took a dig at the Opposition, which comprises Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP, and Congress, for demanding the suspension of some legislators of the ruling alliance who had hit a poster of Rahul Gandhi with slippers on the stairs of the Maharashtra Legislature complex some days ago.

“As the Opposition doesn’t want to listen to the development work of our government, their members fled from the House,” the chief minister said referring to members of the Opposition staging a walkout earlier in the day.

‘Because he refuses to do a Savarkar..’: Rahul Gandhi gets Oppn solidarity

    [ad_1]

Leaders of several opposition parties on Friday spoke up in support of Rahul Gandhi post his disqualification as a Lok Sabha MP due to his conviction in a criminal defamation case from 2019.

TMC supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee called Rahul’s disqualification a ‘new low’ to India’s constitutional democracy.

“In PM Modi’s New India, Opposition leaders have become the prime target of BJP! While BJP leaders with criminal antecedents are inducted into the cabinet, Opposition leaders are disqualified for their speeches. Today, we have witnessed a new low for our constitutional democracy,” she tweeted.

PDP chief and Former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti remarked that the Government of India is ‘clearly rattled’ by the Wayanad MP for emerging as a ‘powerful challenger’ pre-2024 elections.

“GOI is clearly rattled by RG for emerging as a powerful challenger pre-2024 elections. Since BJP can’t fight him politically, they are now subverting institutions because he refuses to do a Savarkar. The apprehensions he voiced in London are tragically being proven right,” she remarked.

Uddhav Thackeray, who heads the Shiv Sena (UBT) party, on Friday, dubbed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as “murder” of democracy and said this is the beginning of the end of “dictatorship”.

In a statement, Thackeray said it has become a crime to call a thief a thief, while those “looting” the country are out.

“This is the murder of democracy. All agencies are under pressure. This is the beginning of the end of the dictatorship…the battle only needs a direction (now),” Thackeray said.

RJD MP Manoj Jha said that the BJP-led centre by doing this, has made Rahul Gandhi’s ‘democracy in danger’ remarks in the United Kingdom ‘true’.

CPIML general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya highlighted the speed with which action was taken against Gandhi.

“The sentence against @RahulGandhi in the alleged Modi defamation case was announced yesterday and within a day he is now disqualified from the Lok Sabha! Nothing short of a surgical strike on democracy! Time for the entire opposition to rally against this unbridled emergency!” he said.

CPI leader Binoy Viswam asked where India was going as a democracy.

“Where is our democracy heading to? For a speech made in Kolar, case in Surat, that too after how many years? Anybody of their dislike can be booked for whatever reason they decide! Today it is Rahul Gandhi, tomorrow it can be you or me. Time to unite in defence of democracy,” he said.

BSP MP Danish MP termed Gandhi’s disqualification unfortunate, and said if MPs were to lose their membership on such matters of defamation, then 70 per cent of parliamentarians will lose their membership, most of them being from the BJP, he claimed.

He alleged that many BJP leaders have linked Muslims to terrorism, while criticising the disqualification.

“If such an issue becomes a yardstick to disqualify an MP, then filing defamation cases will become a means to strip lawmakers of their membership,” he said.

A court in Surat sentenced Rahul Gandhi to 2 years in jail in a defamation case on Thursday, filed on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

“Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 23 March, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,” the Lok Sabha secretariat said in a notification issued on Friday.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said that the party will not be ‘intimidated’ or ‘silenced’ by the decision to disqualify the Wayanad MP.

“We will fight this battle both legally and politically. We will not be intimidated or silenced. Instead of a JPC into the PM-linked Adani MahaMegaScam, @RahulGandhi stands disqualified. Indian Democracy Om Shanti,” Jairam Ramesh tweeted.
