Indian community in Riyadh narrate woes, minister listens patiently

Jeddah: In a mark of engagement with the diaspora, minister of state for external affairs V. Muralidharan has been hectically busy in constantly meeting with Indian community members from various segments in Riyadh. The minister is focusing on day-to-day issues experienced by blue collar workers who constitute a major segment of the Indian community in the oil rich Kingdom.
The community members narrated a wide range of woes starting from exorbitant school fees back home in India for NRI children to delay in clearing the Huroob cases. They also aired their views on family dependent fees, higher education to visit visas, and death cases. The minister listened patiently to the problems, grievances, and suggestions put forth by the community members.
“We are determined to address every single issue that affects any Indian in abroad”, the minister told the Indian community delegation that met him on Monday at the embassy.

Muralidharan reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen on the Indian community living in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries and the government has ushered in a new era by engaging with the vast class of its diaspora.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is always trying to reach out to common masses and has been working constantly for welfare of Indians abroad and announcing slew of measures to ensure safety and welfare of Indians working in Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries, Muralidharan told the community members.
He also emphasized that not only diplomatic missions but every Indian living in the country to act as an ambassador and extend help to his compatriot.
Commenting upon women trafficking and house maid issues, the minister added that its victims themselves are falling into trap by avoiding legal migration and opting for visit visas for a third country.
Muralidharan also highlighted that state governments also ought to play a constructive role in curbing unsafe recruitment of Indian workers. He urged the community to bring notice of the problem into state governments where police, which is a state subject, act.

The Indian Steering Committee that comprises veteran NRIs from various states met with the minister under leadership of Zaigham Khan. The steering committee members urged the minister to have a community hall for Indian community functions in the Saudi capital.
Prominent community leader Shihab Kottukad explained the core issues that need to be addressed by the government level. Shihab highlighted the expansion of insurance ambit and establishing more labour welfare personnel.
Telangana NRI Forum President Mohammed Abdul Jabbar drew attention towards delay in forwarding end of service benefits and other financial settlements of deceased workers. Jabbar said that bereaved families back home in India are facing difficulties in claiming their legitimate amount.
AP NRT coordinator Muzammil Shaikh urged the minister to curb the menace of maid flow out of the country. He also hailed the ongoing mission Kaveri, the evacuation of Indians from Sudan.
TKK President Abel Antony told the minister about inadequate counters operated by Saudi ministry of labour and passport department officials to sort out Huroob cases.
Gulam Khan, Sulltan Mazhar, Ahmed Imtiyaz, Deepak Satish, Santosh Shetty, Anwar Qurhid, Prominent Malayali community workers Raafi Pangodu, Sidik Turvooru and Telugu community members Ananda Raju, Sucharita; Saleem Maie, Saleem Mohammed, Ahad Siddique, Saroj, and Munir among others who aired their views to the minister.
Muralidharan in Saudi Arabia to oversee evacuation of Indian nationals from Sudan under Operation Kaveri. He also interacted with the Indian entrepreneur community in Riyadh on Monday.
He was scheduled to visit Riyadh and Dammam some time ago, however, it was canceled.
Muralidharan, a native of Kerala and who was elected as MP in the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra is looking after the Gulf region in MEA.
Known for mass contact from his college days through ABVP, the minister maintains rapport with the NRI community in the Gulf region.

Iranian delegation arrives in Saudi Arabia to reopen embassy in Riyadh

Riyadh: An Iranian delegation arrived on Wednesday, in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, as part of a plan to reopen Tehran’s embassy and diplomatic missions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani took to Twitter and wrote,” An Iranian technical team arrived in Riyadh on Wednesday noon in a new move & in line with implementing the agreement between the IR of Iran & Saudi Arabia to resume diplomatic ties and political and consular activities in the two countries.”
He said the Iranian delegation will take necessary action in two working groups in Riyadh and Jeddah to launch the Embassy and Consulate General of Iran as well as the permanent diplomatic mission of the country at the headquarters of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman noted that Iran will try to reopen and launch its diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia before this year’s Hajj season.

It is the first official visit by Iranian officials to Saudi Arabia since the visit of officials of the Iranian Haj Agency to the Kingdom in December 2019.
On Saturday, April 8, a Saudi delegation arrived in Tehran to discuss the implementation of reopening the Kingdom’s embassy and consulate in Iran.
The visit of the two delegations comes days after the second round hosted by Beijing in March between the Saudi and Iranian sides to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries, which were severed since 2016.
On March 10, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced the resumption of their diplomatic relations and the reopening of embassies within two months, following Chinese-sponsored talks in Beijing, according to a joint statement by the three countries.

Five Indians including two from Hyderabad die en route to Umrah near Riyadh

Jeddah: In a tragic road mishap, five persons including two from Hyderabad lost their lives on way to perform Umrah in the wee hours of Thursday.
Riyadh-based families of Ahmed Abdul Rasheed (27) and Mohammed Shahid Khatri (24) who were neigbours in Suwaidi area in Riyadh were traveling together to perform Umrah when their vehicle was hit by another car from opposite direction around 3:00 am on Thursday, according to primary information that revealed by relatives of deceased.
Ahmed Abdul Rasheed who is a native of Hyderabad along with his pregnant wife Khansa, his three-years-old daughter Mariam, accompanied by Mohammed Shahid Khatri, who was a native of Sikar district in Rajasthan, and his wife Sumayya and their four-year-old son Ammar Ahmed were traveling in a car to Makkah when their car met with a fatal accident.

Ahmed Abdul Rasheed received severe injuries and currently battling for his life in a hospital. His wife and daughter were killed on the spot. In the accident, Shahid Khatri and his four-year-old son were killed on the spot while his wife Sumayya succumbed later in the evening at the hospital.
The required legal formalities were completed by the family friends and the bodies are expected to be laid to rest in Riyadh on Friday.
At the beginning of Ramzan, 21 expatriates living in the Khamis Mushait area were killed in a bus accident on the way to perform Umrah.

Saudi Arabia’s King invites Iranian President to visit Riyadh

Tehran: Just over a week after Tehran and Riyadh agreed to restore diplomatic relations, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has invited Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to visit Riyadh, a senior official here has confirmed.
Mohammad Jamshidi, deputy chief of staff for political affairs to Raisi, confirmed the development in a tweet on Sunday, saying the invitation was extended to the President from the Saudi monarch in a letter, reports Xinhua news agency.
Jamshidi added the Saudi king said in the letter that he welcomed the recent deal between the two “brotherly countries” on the normalisation of bilateral ties and called for strong economic and regional cooperation between Riyadh and Tehran.
Raisi welcomed the invitation and stressed Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation, the official noted.
China, Saudi Arabia and Iran on March 10 announced that Riyadh and Tehran had reached a deal that included the agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and missions within two months.
Also on Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told reporters that the two countries had agreed to hold a meeting at the Foreign Ministers level, and that three possible locations had been proposed.
He did not name the locations, nor say when the meeting might take place.
The two nations have also announced they will reopen embassies within two months and re-establish trade and security relations.

Saudi Arabia cut ties in January 2016 after demonstrators stormed its embassy in Tehran after Riyadh had executed the prominent Shia Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, who was convicted of terror-related offences.
Since then, tensions between the Sunni- and Shia-led neighbours have often been high, with each regarding the other as a threatening power seeking regional dominance.
They have been on opposing sides of several regional conflicts, including the civil wars in Syria and Yemen.

Saudi announces new national airline ‘Riyadh Air’; know more here

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced on Sunday, the establishment of a new national airline, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
The new carrier will be called “Riyadh Air” and it aims to improve connectivity between the Kingdom and the three continents in which it operates— Asia, Europe and Africa.
Riyadh Air also works to raise the competitiveness of national companies in accordance with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
Riyadh Air will be based in the capital and will be supported by the Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Riyadh Air will be led by an elite group of local and international experts, and its board of directors will be chaired by the Governor of the Public Investment Fund, Yasser bin Othman Al-Rumayyan.
Former Etihad CEO Tony Douglas has been appointed CEO of Riyadh Air, who has more than 40 years of experience in the transport, aviation and logistics sectors.
To enrich the passengers’ experience, Riyadh Air aims to launch flights to more than 100 destinations around the world by 2030 and will provide exceptional levels of integrated services, mixed with authentic Saudi hospitality.
Riyadh Air is set to be a “global airline”, expected to add 20 billion dollars to non-oil GDP growth and create more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Riyadh Air and King Salman International Airport are among the latest investments of the Public Investment Fund in the aviation sector, which aim to raise the financial sustainability of the aviation sector system and enhance its global competitiveness in order to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

US rapper Travis Scott set to perform live in Riyadh on March 17

Riyadh: For the first time ever, Grammy-nominated United States (US) rapper Travis Scott is set to perform live in concert in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh on Friday, March 17, 2023.
The rapper will be performing at the Benban Festival (the venue for the MDL Beast concerts) in Riyadh at 8:30 pm KSA time.
The American star from Houston, Texas, his songs streamed more than 40 billion times.
His 2018 single “Psycho Mode” was deemed by Billboard as one of the “decade-defining songs” and also set a record as “the first hip-hop song to spend at least 30 weeks in the top 10 of the Hot 100” and received a Grammy Award nomination.
Scott is not only a successful figure in the music field, but also in fashion, culture and acting.
He also starred in his own Netflix documentary, Look Mom I Can Fly, and scored a spot on President Barack Obama’s Playlist.

Karnataka beats Meghalaya to win Santosh Trophy after 54 years in Riyadh

Riyadh: Karnataka ended a 54-year-old title drought in the 76th National Football Championships for the Santosh Trophy when they defeated first-timers Meghalaya 3-2 in a well-fought final at the King Fahd International Stadium, here on Saturday.
The young Karnataka team comprising reserve players from Bengaluru FC and some talented players from clubs from the Bengaluru District Football Association’s Super Division League made history when it won the first Santosh Trophy final to be played on foreign soil.
Karnataka had last won their fourth title as Mysore way back in 1968-69 at Banglore and had since then reached the final only in 1974-75. They have finished runners-up on five occasions.
However, the team coached by Ravi Babu Raju exceeded all expectations and quelled a strong challenge by Meghalaya to claim a memorable victory and a historic title.
M Sunil Kumar (2nd min), Bekey Oram (19th min) and Robin Yadav (44th min) scored the goals for Karnataka while Brolington Warlarpih (7th min) and Sheen Stevenson (60th min) scored for Meghalaya in the game of two halves.
Karnataka played a tactically superior game and caught Meghalaya on the wrong foot off counterattacks. They dominated the midfield and though Meghalaya fought back well in the second half, their forwards missed some crucial chances as they fell short.
Karnataka took the lead in the second minute of a frantic first half when Sunil M’s shot went in off defender Bankhemi Mawlong’s leg after defender Robin Yadav set him up with a superb long throw.
But Meghalaya came back within a few minutes when they were awarded a penalty when forward Sheen Stevenson was brought down by defender Nikhil G with a body block as the Meghalaya star made a fine run into the box from the left side. Defender Brolington Warlarpih converted from the spot comfortably to make it 1-1.

Karnataka took control of the midfield and made some superb attacks as they took a 3-1 lead just before the breather.
Forward Jacob John Kaitooaren floated a ball into the far corner to M Sunil Kumar, who centred it and Bekey Oram tapped the high ball into the net past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 for Karnataka in the 19th minute.
Karnataka had a couple of more chances to add to their tally but their forwards either shot wide or were thwarted by the defenders. Meghalaya had one chance to reduce the margin but Donlad Diengdoh’s shot off a superb attack was deflected out by a defender.
Karnataka made it 3-1 when Robin Yadav planted a superb free-kick into the top left corner for his sixth goal (four freekicks, one penalty, one field goal) of the tournament. Robin, who is part of the Bengaluru FC reserves, thus became the third-highest scorer in the tournament behind joint leaders Naro Hari Shrestha of West Bengal and Nijo Gilbert of Kerala, who have nine goals each.
Just when it looked like Karnataka were cruising towards victory, Meghalaya reduced the margin when Sheen Stevenson struck in the 60th minute after Donlad Diengdoh played a dummy off a pass by Banskheml Mawlong to distract the defenders.
Meghalaya created a lot of pressure in the last half hour of the match in search of the equaliser but the Karnataka defense stood strong and thwarted them. They were also denied in second-half added time when an attempt by Ronaldkydo Lyngdoh went off the top of the crosspiece.
Rajat Paul Lyngdoh (Meghalaya) with 6 clean sheets in 12 matches was adjudged as the Best Goalkeeper of the Championship while Robin Yadav (Karnataka), who scored six goals in the tournament including one in the final, got the Player of the Championship award.

Passenger’s face to become boarding pass at Riyadh Airport

Riyadh: Riyadh Airports company has announced the implementation of the ‘Smart Travel Journey’ experiment at Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which will recognize passengers through their digital faceprint, without boarding passes.
Riyadh Airports is implementing this smart service in cooperation with the international company SITA.
SITA Smart Path solution enables efficient biometric registration, whereby passengers will become their own boarding passes just by looking at the SITA FacePod camera. The passenger’s face becomes his boarding pass.
Riyadh Airports posted a video on Twitter showing the new system and the benefits of the trial.
“In an important step to transform the capital’s airport into a smart airport in which we seek to reach customer satisfaction, #Riyadh_Airports, in cooperation with the international company SITA @SITAonline, succeeded in implementing the “Smart Travel Journey” experience at #King_Khalid_International Airport to identify the digital face print of passengers without the need to travel documents,” Riyadh Airports tweeted.

Thus, Riyadh Airports aims to take advantage of the digital face print technology at the capital’s airport to raise the quality and speed of travel procedures, which helps to improve the passenger experience and raise the level of customer service.
The Kingdom continues to facilitate travel procedures, as it was recently announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched a free transit visa for visitors coming by air, and a study visa was also launched for students from all over the world to study, in addition to the Kingdom’s plans to build the largest airport in the world, the King Salman International Airport.
