Trump rejects last chance to testify at New York civil trial

The jury has also watched lengthy excerpts from an October videotaped deposition in which Trump vehemently denied raping Carroll or ever really knowing her.

Without Trump’s testimony, lawyers were scheduled to make closing arguments Monday, with deliberations likely to begin on Tuesday.

After prosecutors rested their case Thursday, Trump attorney Joe Tacopina immediately rested the defense case as well without calling any witnesses. He did not request additional time for Trump to decide to testify. Tacopina declined in an email to comment after the deadline passed Sunday.

On Thursday, Kaplan had given Trump extra time to change his mind and request to testify, though the judge did not promise he would grant such a request to reopen the defense case so Trump could take the stand.

At the time, Kaplan noted that he’d heard about news reports Thursday in which Trump told reporters while visiting his golf course in Doonbeg, Ireland, that he would “probably attend” the trial. Trump also criticized Kaplan, a Bill Clinton appointee, as an “extremely hostile” and “rough judge” who “doesn’t like me very much.”

CPI(M) in Kerala rejects Congress’ claims of irregularities in AI camera project

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI(M) in Kerala on Sunday rejected all the claims of the Congress party over alleged irregularities in the implementation of the AI camera system to deter traffic violators in the State under “Safe Kerala” project, and termed it as “baseless”.

CPI(M) state secretary, M V Govindan, in a press meet here, asked the Leader of Opposition (LoP), V D Satheesan and former LoP and senior Congress leader, Ramesh Chennithala to “reach an agreement” on the corruption amount they were alleging.

Govindan said the Congress was raising “such baseless” allegations to divert the attention of the public from the achievements of the Left government.

    MS Education Academy

The senior Left leader said that the project was implemented to follow Section 136 A of the Motor Vehicles Act, that directs the State government to ensure electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety.

“Satheesan is saying that there was corruption of Rs 100 crore. Chennithala claims that the corruption amount was Rs 132 crore. While the whole project for AI cameras was worth Rs 232 crore. They should get their numbers right. The Congress leaders should first reach an agreement on what to allege,” Govindan said.

He said the allegations raised by both the leaders were baseless.

“The total cost of the project comes around Rs 142 crore. There is a functioning expense of Rs 56.24 crore for five years. This includes a control room in all 14 districts, annual maintenance, staff, their salaries, internet and everything. Then there is a GST of Rs 35.76 crore and it all totals to Rs 232.25 crore. But the Congress leaders will not give you the whole numbers,” Govindan alleged.

The senior Left leader also claimed that the Congress was using the “BJP’s trick” to spread fake news.

“The Prime Minister, the Congress and the BJP are trying to weaken the Left government by creating fake news to tarnish the image of the State,” he said.

Govindan said the Left government was implementing a scientific method to reduce traffic violations and accidents.

“On the first day of its implementation, the AI cameras detected 4.5 lakh traffic violations. According to the Motor Vehicle Department, the violations have come down to 1.25 lakh now after people became aware of the presence of the cameras and fines being imposed,” Govindan claimed.

Meanwhile, the BJP asked the Chief Minister and the government to “answer” to the people over the corruption charges.

BJP state chief K Surendran said Govindan was ridiculing himself by justifying the Chief Minister over the allegations.

The Congress has been raising corruption charges against the “Safe Kerala” project, which aims to reduce road accidents and traffic violations in the State, since its inauguration in April.

House majority whip rejects idea that GOP debt bill is doomed

The measure, which passed the House by a vote of 217-215, is widely perceived as having no chance of passing the Senate, where Democrats have a slim majority.

Emmer didn’t explain why he thought Senate Democrats other than Manchin might come to embrace the legislation.

If no agreement is reached, the nation would bump up against its debt ceiling, which is now projected to happen in July, and default on its debts. President Joe Biden has said he is willing to negotiate over the nation’s budget, but wants the debt limit raised independently of those talks, without any conditions, as occurred during the Trump administration. Most Capitol Hill Democrats have said the same thing.

Emmer said no negotiations are needed: The Senate could simply approve the House GOP bill and Biden could sign it.

“Our recommendation is: We passed it through the House; take it up in the Senate and pass it,” Emmer said.

As he tried to redirect the narrative on the legislation, Emmer also rejected the idea that the bill was built on spending cuts, referring instead to “spending reforms.”

“I take a little issue, Dana, with the cuts language that the media likes to use all the time,” the Minnesota Republican told host Dana Bash. “This is a transformational bill. It would limit spending.”

Speaking later on the same CNN program, former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said he didn’t see much hope that the debt crisis would be resolved quickly or easily.

“I’m really concerned about the debt limit when we approach it,” Kinzinger said.

Bengaluru court rejects transit bail plea of IYC President B V Srinivas

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: A local court here has rejected the transit anticipatory bail to Indian Youth Congress President B V Srinivas.

He has been accused of harassment and gender discrimination by Angkita Dutta, a youth Congress leader from Assam, and has been asked to appear before the Assam Police for questioning on May 2.

In his plea before the Additional City Civil and Sessions Court, Srinivas had sought the transit bail so that he could approach the jurisdictional court for bail.

    MS Education Academy

Judge K S Jyothishree heard the plea on Thursday and announced its rejection on Friday.

Appearing for Dutta, senior counsel Phaneendra submitted that the accused had already approached the Guwahati High Court in the matter but claimed he had not approached any other court in this plea.

The lawyer argued that since Srinivas was influential, he would destroy the evidence if granted bail. He was accused of serious offences and therefore custodial interrogation was necessary, he added.

Srinivas’s counsel, senior advocate Shashikiran Shetty had argued that the complainant was hand-in-glove with political rivals and had made the allegation out of political ill-will. The Assam police was in Karnataka to arrest Srinivas in a complaint filed long after the alleged incident.

Dutta had alleged that Srinivas had harassed her for over six months and had threatened her not to bring it to the notice of Congress leaders. He allegedly assaulted her on February 25 in a hotel in Chhattisgarh, and allegedly harassed her in Guwahati as well, earlier.

She filed the complaint on April 19, 2023 in a police station in Kamrup, Assam. Srinivas has been booked under various Sections of IPC 294, 342, 352, 354, 354(A)(iv), 506 and 509, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.

  • Only in Bengaluru: Landlord rejects tenant over poor marks in class 12

Only in Bengaluru: Landlord rejects tenant over poor marks in class 12

    [ad_1]

The tech boom in Bengaluru has created a surge in demand for rental properties, making life tough for the city’s working-class house hunters. Soaring rents and exorbitant security deposits are only the tip of the iceberg, as landlords add to the stress by asking for all sorts of personal information.

In this era of over-sharing, landlords in Bengaluru are taking it to the next level, requesting LinkedIn profiles, college details, and even mini autobiographies from prospective tenants. As frustrations mount, tenants are turning to social media to air their grievances in the IT capital.

A viral tweet from a user named Shubh recently highlighted the bizarre standards set by some landlords. In this oddball case, the landlord rejected a tenant because his Class 12 marks didn’t meet the arbitrary 90% threshold – despite the fact that marks don’t have much bearing on someone’s ability to rent a home!

    MS Education Academy

Shubh’s tweet, featuring screenshots of the conversation and a cheeky caption, quickly gained traction: “Marks don’t decide your future, but it definitely decides whether you get a flat in Bangalore or not”.

As if dealing with Bengaluru landlords wasn’t challenging enough, the city has now surpassed Mumbai in charging the highest proportion of property value as rent. It’s no wonder that tenants are feeling the pinch, as they juggle ever-increasing costs and the endless personal questions from their potential landlords.

In a nutshell, Bengaluru’s rental market has become quite the circus, with landlords acting as ringmasters, setting the stage for an increasingly tough and goofy house hunting experience.

  • Menendez rejects any substitutes in push for Latino Fed nominee

Menendez rejects any substitutes in push for Latino Fed nominee

    [ad_1]

    2023 0418 senate francis 5

Menendez’s position gives the White House some flexibility as it aims to fill the slot vacated by Lael Brainard, now President Joe Biden’s top economic policy adviser. But the New Jerseyan also said tapping a Hispanic person for another top vacant position, such as the Treasury Department’s chief economist or the open seat on Biden’s Council of Economic Advisers, wouldn’t be enough.

An administration official said the White House has floated those options to Menendez.

“Look, I’m not going to work against my own efforts,” Menendez said. “They have raised that there may be other positions as well, and if it’s as well, that’s great. But I don’t want to hear that it’s in place of.”

The vice chair search process is in a holding pattern while the White House figures out how to satisfy the senator, who has gotten support for his push from fellow members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, as well as other lawmakers, such as Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.).

Northwestern University professor Janice Eberly, a former Treasury official under President Barack Obama, has been seen as a frontrunner for the vice chair job.

A Latino person has never had a vote on interest rate policy at the Fed, something that has rankled Menendez for years. He voted against Powell’s confirmation to a second term to protest that multiple regional Fed president jobs have been filled in recent years, and none of them have gone to Hispanic candidates.

The administration official said one option could be to elevate Philip Jefferson, appointed to the Fed last year by Biden, to vice chair and pick a Latino nominee for the open board seat. (This option was previously reported by the Wall Street Journal.)

The vice chair position usually goes to a Ph.D. economist with an extensive background in monetary policy, a relatively limited group of people, whereas the pool of candidates for other board seats has traditionally been much bigger.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said it was important to fill the No. 2 spot soon.

“We need a person who has a demonstrated record for holding banks accountable, and someone who will push back against Chair Powell, reminding him that the Fed does not have one job: inflation,” she told reporters Wednesday. “It has two jobs: inflation and jobs.”

  • Biden rejects McCarthy’s debt-limit plan

    Biden rejects McCarthy’s debt-limit plan

    [ad_1]

    image

The introduction of that plan and Biden’s speech demanding a debt limit hike with no strings attached represented significant steps in a standoff with major financial and political implications. The debt limit clock is ticking, with experts predicting the U.S. could default as early as June.

The House GOP proposal would raise the debt limit by $1.5 trillion, or through March of next year — whichever comes first — ensuring Biden has to relitigate the issue with House Republicans before voters pick the next president. It also cuts federal funding by $130 billion in the upcoming fiscal year, turning back discretionary spending totals by about two years.

Actually passing the bill is likely to prove complicated, however — rank-and-file Republicans aired internal frustration about the path forward during a closed-door conference meeting this week. But already, McCarthy is seeking to put the onus on Biden and top Democrats to make the next move in the debt limit standoff.

“They have no more excuse to refuse to negotiate,” the speaker said on the floor after privately briefing Republican lawmakers. “President Biden has a choice: come to the table and stop playing partisan political games, or cover his ears, refuse to negotiate, and risk bumbling his way into the first default in our nation’s history.”

The president and speaker haven’t communicated on the looming debt crisis since February, prompting McCarthy’s bill proposal and subsequent planned vote next week. The GOP plan aims to repeal a swath of clean energy tax credits, in addition to yanking back tens of billions of dollars that Democrats included for IRS enforcement in their signature tax, climate and health care bill last year. The proposal would also end Biden’s pause on student loan payments and interest, block his student loan forgiveness plan and increase work requirements for “able-bodied adults without dependents” receiving SNAP benefits.

It would also claw back unspent pandemic aid, ease permitting requirements for energy projects and overhaul other welfare requirements, including for Medicaid.

Biden began speaking just minutes after the plan’s introduction. But in his remarks, he still accused McCarthy of advancing a plan that would benefit only the wealthy and major corporations and vowed to reject GOP attempts to roll back his administration’s accomplishments in exchange for averting a financial catastrophe.

“They’re in Congress threatening to undo all the stuff that you helped me get done,” he said. “You and the American people should know about the competing economic visions of the country that are at stake right now.”

The White House has repeatedly dinged McCarthy for delaying a release of a budget proposal that would theoretically outline the Republican goals for slashing the federal deficit. That budget plan now appears indefinitely on ice as the speaker presses ahead toward passage of his debt-limit offer.

The news late last week that McCarthy would issue a debt-limit proposal rather than a budget prompted a flurry of strategizing inside the administration ahead of its unveiling, as officials gamed out options for a response. But McCarthy’s decision to stock the plan with a wish-list of conservative priorities — combined with doubts over whether it could win enough GOP support to pass the House — left Biden officials unconvinced there’s any reason to budge off their current hardline stance.

“They say they’re going to default unless I agree to all these wacko notions they have,” Biden said, singling out McCarthy for risking a default that would leave the nation “devastated.”

McCarthy said he would use passage of his proposal, which includes deregulatory and energy moves beyond spending cuts, to keep pushing for a sit down with Biden. The 320-page debt-limit package was strategically sponsored by House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington (R-Texas), who would naturally be the lead sponsor of the traditional budget resolution Democrats have been pressuring House Republicans to unveil and approve.

The White House, however, insists there is nothing Republicans can offer that will convince them to compromise over the debt limit. Biden officials in recent days have worked to maintain a united front among Democrats on Capitol Hill, warning that a debt ceiling negotiation would set a dangerous precedent.

Biden personally called Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and top House Democrat Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday to stress that there would be no negotiation, a Democratic aide said.

The White House also distributed two memos to congressional Democrats this week detailing support from economists and business leaders for a clean increase, as well as polling showing broad opposition to the cuts included in the GOP bill.

Democratic senators quickly made clear that Republicans’ opening offer is doomed if it reaches the upper chamber.

“There are no policy concessions that should ever be attached to avoiding default — it doesn’t matter which policy concessions they are,” said Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii, adding that Senate Democrats remain “100 percent” behind that stance.

Still, Democrats’ universal panning of the GOP proposal masked growing urgency among lawmakers to make progress toward a resolution. Budget forecasters now predict the nation could hit its borrowing limit earlier than expected. The approaching deadline has motivated a bipartisan group of House moderates to try to craft a potential fallback compromise, while sparking broader speculation across the Hill over the potential for a short-term extension that might buy Congress more time.

McCarthy has vowed to push through his legislation, blasting the upper chamber on Wednesday for what he portrayed as legislative laziness.

The Senate “named March maple syrup month and then yesterday they congratulated UConn on winning the national championship. It’d be interesting if the Senate ever does anything,” the speaker said.

But on Wednesday, Biden indicated that the proposal would have no effect on the White House’s own set of demands.

“Take default off the table, and let’s have a real, serious, detailed conversation about how to grow the economy, lower costs and reduce the deficit,” he said.

Olivia Beavers and Caitlin Emma contributed to this report.

Judge in Proud Boys trial rejects claims of government misconduct

    [ad_1]

    capitol breach extremist plots 20085

“Pezzola has not shown how any of this relates to an element of an offense with which he is charged — or how it relates to him at all,” Kelly wrote, adding, “Nor has the evidence been suppressed. As the Court has already explained to Pezzola, he cannot base a [suppression] claim on information he has long possessed.”

As the trial of five Proud Boys — including former national chairman Enrique Tarrio — inches toward a conclusion this week, Kelly sidelined several of the most sensational allegations that Pezzola’s attorneys had lodged. Among them: that prosecutors had destroyed evidence related to the case, that they coerced false guilty pleas from other Proud Boys and that they doctored at least one report from an informant to obscure an FBI agent’s involvement.

Kelly summed up his response to these claims in a section of his order headlined: “There Is No Evidence of Government Misconduct, Let Alone Misconduct Warranting Dismissal, a Mistrial, or Other Sanctions,”

Kelly described Pezzola’s theories as “bizarre,” based on “conjecture” and other times not based on anything at all.

“At bottom, not one of Pezzola’s contentions withstands scrutiny,” Kelly wrote. “His factual premises lack support, and his legal premises cannot be squared with case law.”

In his order, Kelly also rejected claims that prosecutors had improperly withheld key evidence in the case by claiming it was classified. The Justice Department worked frantically to reclaim 80 lines of internal FBI messages that it had inadvertently provided to the defense lawyers in the case, saying they were never meant to be turned over and were likely classified. The effort prompted defense lawyers to raise questions about whether prosecutors were seeking to seal away significant exculpatory evidence under the guise of a classification issue.

Kelly rejected this speculation in his order, contending that they had no bearing on the defense’s case at all.

“The Court has reviewed the 80 messages produced to it in camera and finds — regardless of whether they were properly classified or even properly categorized as law-enforcement sensitive — that the Government had no duty to produce them to the defendants in the first place,” he wrote.
