Nitish reaches Delhi to meet opposition leaders, starts with Lalu Prasad

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who reached New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the current political situation with opposition leaders, met RJD national President Lalu Prasad Yadav at the official residence of his daughter and Rajya Sabha member Misa Bharti.

JD-U national President Lalan Singh and Bihar Minister Sanjay Jha were also present at the meeting.

Nitish Kumar is on a three-day tour to New Delhi to meet opposition leaders of the country including Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, party President Mallikarjun Kharge and other leaders and prepare a plan for the Lok Sabha election.

After the formation of Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar, he had urged Congress top leadership to take initiative in this matter as quickly as possible.

Nitish Kumar himself claimed last week that he had a telephonic conversation with Kharge, who had reportedly invited Nitish Kumar for a meeting to discuss the future plan of action in Bihar.

Bihar is crucial for the Narendra Modi government as it has 40 Lok Sabha seats. As the BJP is not ruling in the state, it would not be easy for it to succeed here.

The Bihar Chief Minister had also said that he will go to Delhi after the state Assembly’s Budget session, which concluded last week.

Nitish Kumar has been advocating opposition unity ever since he formed the government in Bihar with the Mahagathbandhan. During his visit to the national capital in September last year, he had met Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Arvind Kejriwal, D. Raja, Sitaram Yechuri and Akhilesh Yadav, a majority of whom he is likely to meet this time as well.

Rahul trying to become ‘martyr’: Ravi Shankar Prasad

    [ad_1]

Patna: After Rahul Gandhi said that he will not apologise to anyone, BJP leader and former Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Congress leader is trying to become a “martyr”.

Speaking to media persons in Patna, Prasad said: “Congress party could have obtained a stay on the decision of Surat court. They have deliberately not obtained the stay order to utilise the issue during the Karnataka assembly election. He is trying to become a martyr…”

“Rahul Gandhi did the press conference in Delhi in a well planned manner. He wants to present himself sacrificial and take benefit in the Karnataka assembly election,” the BJP leader asserted.

“The Congress party has a number of prominent lawyers. Why they did not obtain the stay. Today, Rahul Gandhi has again told a lie that he had not said anything in London… When his party wins election, Rahul Gandhi thinks the Election Commission is genuine and when he loses, the Election Commission becomes bad,” Prasad said.

  • Rahul case not linked to Adani issue, stay not sought to encash issue in polls: Prasad

Rahul case not linked to Adani issue, stay not sought to encash issue in polls: Prasad

    [ad_1]

Patna: Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday rebutted the charge that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha because Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “scared” of his questions on the Adani issue.

Talking to reporters here soon after Gandhi addressed the press in Delhi, Prasad also alleged that the Congress did not seek a stay on the conviction by a Gujarat court so that it could “encash” the episode in Karnataka, where assembly elections are expected in about a month.

He said, “Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s statement confirms that the Congress did not press into service its famed battery of legal experts with the Karnataka polls in mind. What else can explain their failure to show the alacrity which was for all to see in Pawan Khera’s case?”

“We are not here to hold brief for Adani. But Gandhi sought to mislead the people to link his disqualification with Adani. He has been disqualified because of conviction in a case that relates to defamatory remarks he made in 2019,” added the BJP leader.

The Lok Sabha member from Patna Sahib asserted that Adani Group used to win contracts even when the UPA was in power at the Centre and was doing business in Congress-ruled states such as Rajasthan.

Rejecting Gandhi’s charge that his speech on Adani inside Parliament had left the Modi government tizzy, Prasad asserted that the Congress leader’s address was baseless and incoherent.

Taunting the Congress leader for the averment that he chose his words carefully, Prasad said, “It only proves that he made the defamatory remarks with due deliberation. This has been his habit. He is facing at least seven other cases of defamation, including the one lodged here by (former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister) Sushil Kumar Modi”.

Rejecting the charge of political vendetta, the BJP leader pointed out that “several political leaders have, so far, been disqualified upon their conviction by a court of law. Some of them belong to the BJP”.

A practicing lawyer, Prasad also dismissed the argument against a Gujarat court holding the Congress leader guilty for comments made outside the state, saying “Purnesh Modi (the BJP MLA who filed the petition) would have naturally felt offended by Gandhi’s remark about Modi surname. I would have felt the same had he said something similar about my surname”.

“As an opposition leader, Gandhi was entitled to criticize, but not abuse anybody. His remarks, indeed, were abusive and not critical. It denigrated the OBCs, a social group to which Prime Minister Narendra Modi belongs. The BJP is going to take up this humiliation of OBCs very seriously and launch a nationwide stir,” Prasad declared.

Prasad also remarked, tongue in cheek, that the Congress’ failure to immediately move for a stay against conviction “might indicate that there is internal politics in that party. Many are of the view that in this manner, let’s get rid of Rahul Gandhi”.

He said, “Rahul Gandhi needs to realize that it is not the BJP’s fault that the people are not ready to vote for him. He must give up the sense of entitlement that he is born to rule, being the son of Rajiv Gandhi and grandson of Indira Gandhi, both former Prime Ministers”.

He also lambasted Gandhi for having accused, at his press conference, a section of the media of partisanship towards the BJP and said, “Had we behaved in a similar fashion towards the press, all hell would have broken loose and threat to democracy would have been announced”.

  • Hyderabad’s L V Prasad Eye Institute wins Global Recognition; it has served 34.14 million people so far

Hyderabad’s L V Prasad Eye Institute wins Global Recognition; it has served 34.14 million people so far

    [ad_1]

In the din of politics, cricket and films a unique achievement of an Indian eye care Institution at the global level got swept into the background or virtually went unnoticed in the country.

The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad has been ranked 8th globally in the area of Ophthalmology for 2023 by Scimago agency, a Spanish global ranking organisation. The ranking is based on research, technology innovation and social impact of the research output.

It’s significant to find LVPEI in the company of reputed Institutions like Johns Hopkins, Harvard University, Moorfields of London in the top 10 list. The LVPEI is the first Indian medical institute to find place in the top rankings in the field of research productivity.

Scimago Agency analysed data for the past 5 years of the best medical institutions to arrive at the 2023 rankings. The list is headed by Moorfields Eye Hospitals NHS Trust (UK), Johns Hopkins Medicine (US),   Singapore National Eye Centre, University of Miami Health System (US), Singapore Eye Research Institute, UCLA Health System, (US) and National Institutes of Health (US) and LVPEI (India). The next two are: US Dept of Health & Human Services and Institute National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicare (France).

    A snapshot of achievements

In the last 35 years, since it’s starting in 1987 by Dr Gullapalli N Rao, the LVPEI has been making steady progress in both-providing top class eye care with social impact and undertaking research and introducing latest technology to stay among the best eye care institutions in India and worldwide.

A quick look at some of the key achievements of the Institute: approximately 34.14 million patients served so far. Of them 16 million were served free of cost. About 56,759 personnel trained. The Institute scientists/researchers have 4099 publications; 57 PhDs; 5 Bhatnagar Award winners and 3 Padma Sri awardees.

To expand its reach the LVPEI has set up a few satellite centres. Through them, it has been able to reach 12,193 villages. Overall, it has performed 1.93 million surgeries, 2029 stem cell based procedures, reached 4.92 million children and established a Cornea Bank with 1.19 lakh corneas of which 69, 964 transplants have been done, according to the Institute.

Asked about the significance of the ranking by the Spanish Agency, Dr Prashant Garg, the Executive Chair of the LVPEI said, “The announcement came as a pleasant surprise to us. It was heartening because we were told that the ranking was based on our consistent performance and impact that our research was making on society.”

The global recognition also corroborates the vision of the founder, Dr G N Rao on placing the highest importance to research right from the beginning along with eye care. Annually, the Institute has been publishing an average of 400 research papers.  Consequently, the LVPEI has been intensely focused on world class eye care with research, innovation and social impact as the driving forces, he said.

The institute has also been active in inter-disciplinary collaboration with global institutes. In this context it is pertinent to note that the LVPEI has been helping the Government of Liberia, Africa, in establishing eye care facilities, training Ophthalmologists and skilled technicians and guiding in the creation of both resources and manpower to run a good network to meet the country’s needs in the long term. The African continent has the lowest capabilities in eye care at present.

The LVPEI has established the entire range of eye care facilities in Hyderabad. It tries to be always ahead of the curve in bringing the best technology to its patients in myopia or stem cell therapy. Along with the Arvind Eye Hospital, Shankara Netralaya and the Rajendra Prasad Ophthalmology Institute, it is amongst the top few in the country.

Referring to the future areas of research work with an eye on social impact, Dr Garg said, “We have studied the new opportunities and needs of the region and identified 3-4 broad areas. These include: elderly eye care, inherited eye diseases, eye and the brain linked issues, applications of machine learning.” In addition, a major project is on in Odisha to study the unique eye problems of the tribals, he explained.

  • Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi to appear before Delhi court in land-for-job scam case on Wednesday

Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi to appear before Delhi court in land-for-job scam case on Wednesday

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former railway minister Lalu Prasad, his wife and former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi and 14 others are likely to appear before a Delhi court on Wednesday in connection with a case related to the alleged land-for-job scam.

The case relates to alleged appointments made in the railways in return for land parcels gifted or sold to Prasad’s family when he was the minister of railways between 2004 and 2009.

The CBI in its charge sheet alleged that irregular appointments were made in the railways, violating the laid down norms and procedures of Indian Railways for recruitment.

It alleged that as a quid pro quo, the candidates directly or through their immediate relatives and family members sold land to the family members of RJD chief Prasad, then railway minister, at highly discounted rates up to one-fifth of the prevailing market rates.

Special judge Geetanjali Goel had on February 27 issued summons to the accused persons, including Prasad’s daughter Misa Bharti, and directed them to appear before the court on March 15.

“A perusal of the charge sheet and the documents and material on record prima facie shows commission of offences under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), read with sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using forged document as genuine) of the IPC and various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Accordingly, cognizance is taken of the said offences,” the judge had said.

The judge had noted that the charge sheet was filed without arrest in respect of the accused persons except one who is on bail at present.

In July 2022, the CBI arrested Bhola Yadav, who used to be the officer on special duty (OSD) to Lalu Prasad when he was the railway minister, in the case.

The charge sheet was filed on October 10 last year for offences of criminal conspiracy and corruption against 16 accused persons.

The final report also named former general manager of Central Railway Sowmya Raghavan, former CPO Railways Kamal Deep Mainrai, seven aspirants appointed as substitutes and four private individuals.

According to the charge sheet, the case was registered pursuant to the outcome of a preliminary inquiry against Lalu Prasad and others.

It was alleged in the FIR that some persons, although residents of Patna in Bihar, were appointed as substitutes in Group-D posts during the period 2004-2009 in different zones of the railways located in Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur and Hajipur and in lieu thereof, the individuals themselves or their family members transferred their land in the name of family members of Prasad and a company, AK Infosystems Private Limited, which was subsequently taken over by the family members of Prasad.

It was further alleged that about 1,05,292 square feet land situated in Patna was acquired by the family members of Prasad from those persons through five sale deeds and two gift deeds and in most of the sale deeds, payment to the sellers was mentioned to be paid in cash.

The value of the land as per existing circle rate was about Rs 4.39 crore, the CBI alleged.

The land was directly purchased by the family members of Prasad from the sellers at a rate lower than the prevalent circle rate, the CBI said, adding that the prevalent market value of the land was much higher than the circle rate.

It was alleged that the due procedure and guidelines issued by the railway authority for the appointment of substitutes were not followed and later on, their services had also been regularised.

‘BJP-RSS against reservation’, says Lalu Prasad

    [ad_1]

Patna: RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, who virtually joined the mega rally of the Mahagathbandhan in Purnia on Saturday, said that the BJP and RSS are against reservation.

“The BJP and RSS are hatching a conspiracy to revoke reservation in the country. We have to put up a united fight against them,” Lalu Prasad said.

Addressing the rally virtually from Delhi, the RJD chief said: “It is good to see that all the seven grand alliance partners are sharing the same dais. Such unity will give an idea as to how the Mahagathbandhan is fully prepared for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.”

“Due to the wrong policies of the BJP, the country is on the verge of a split. The BJP is not a political party, it is the mask of the RSS. The Centre functions as per the plans of the RSS.

“We have to fight together to save the country. No one would dare to break the country if we are united. But if we become weak, the country will get destroyed. We had stopped the ‘rath’ of RSS in Bihar. Whenever Bihar takes the initiative, its impact is seen in the country,” he said.

UP Minister calls Swami Prasad Maurya ‘Ravan’ over remark on Hindu epic

    [ad_1]

Budaun: Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Minister Gulab Devi on Thursday compared Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya, who demanded a ban on a portion of Shri Ramcharitmanas, to ‘Ravan’.

The minister made the remark in a press conference here during her visit to the centres for the UP Board Examination.

“Even Ravan did not believe in Ramcharitmanas,” she said.

“But Ravan had Ram in his heart. He went to heaven but what was his condition before that? Ramcharitmanas is a scripture full of qualities of humanity. It is a question of our faith,” the minister said.

“There is an emptiness in the hearts of those who do not believe this. They are criticising Manas to make their politics shine,” she said.

Maurya, a Legislative Council member, had in a statement last month demanded a ban on a couplet from Shri Ramcharitmanas, terming it derogatory towards Dalits and women.

On the Kanpur Dehat incident where a woman and her daughter immolated themselves during an anti-encroachment drive, the minister said, “it was heart-wrenching.”

“There should be no politics on this. One should sympathise with the survivors of the victim’s family. The government should compensate them. Action is being taken against the culprits,” she said.

On the UP board exams, she said anyone found involved in cheating will be booked under the National Security Act.

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya and Mahant Raju Das of Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya came to blows in the lobby of a five-star hotel here on Wednesday.

The two were there to attend a news conclave organised by a TV channel during which they got into a heated argument which turned physical. The security personnel rushed in to separate the two.

Das had recently announced a reward of Maurya’s head after the latter made some objectionable remarks on Ramcharitmanas.

The Mahant later claimed that he was attacked by the SP leader’s supporters and said that he would lodge a complaint against Maurya.

Maurya was not available for comment.
