Difficult to engage with neighbour that practices cross-border terrorism: Jaishankar

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Without naming Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that it is difficult to engage with a neighbour which practices cross-border terrorism against India.

At the same time though, Jaishankar, who is currently in Panama as part of his four-nation tour of North and South America, expressed hope that one day a stage will arrive when Pakistan will deliver on its commitment to not sponsoring cross-border terrorism.

During a joint press briefing with his counterpart from Panama, the Minister said: “It is for us very difficult to engage with a neighbour who practices cross-border terrorism against us. We’ve always said that they have to deliver on the commitment to not sponsor and carry out cross-border terrorism.

“We continue to hope that one day we would reach that stage.”

As part of the visit, Jaishankar first visited Guyana, which was followed by Panama.

He is also scheduled to make stops in Colombia (April 25-27) and the Dominican Republic (April 27-29).

  • Google slapped with $32 mn fine for unfair practices in app market

Google slapped with $32 mn fine for unfair practices in app market

    [ad_1]

Seoul: South Korea’s antitrust regulator on Tuesday slapped a fine of 42.1 billion won (more than $31.8 million) on Google and its regional arms for unfair business practices aimed at solidifying its dominance in the Korean mobile gaming app market.

The punishment came as the U.S.-based global tech giant made shady agreements with South Korean mobile game companies between June 2016 and April 2018, banning them from releasing their content on One Store, according to the Fair Trade Commission (FTC).

One Store is a major homegrown app market launched in January 2016 by South Korea’s three mobile carriers, along with Naver Corp, reports Yonhap news agency.

    MS Education Academy

“Google analysed that the launch of a competitive and comprehensive app market, One Store, will have a major impact on its sales in South Korea,” the FTC said.

Under the agreement, the US behemoth asked game companies to release their content exclusively on its platform Google Play, in return for having the content appear on the market as “featured,” along with providing other marketing benefits.

Being aware of a potential violation of fair trade rules, Google also internally required its employees to delete related emails, and discuss issues offline to avoid leaving traces of such agreements, the FTC said.

The regulator said that the agreement helped Google solidify its dominance in the local app market.

According to the data compiled by the FTC, Google, which accounted for around 80 to 85 percent of the local app market in terms of amount spent in 2016, was able to expand its presence to 90 to 95 per cent in 2018.

On the other hand, One Store fell from 15-20 percent to only 5-10 per cent over the period, the FTC added.

“The availability of the same game in multiple app stores promotes competition, including diversifying content and consumer benefits,” the regulator said.

“By blocking the release of games on One Store, Google has hindered innovation and consumer benefits in the app market and mobile gaming sector.”

The fine, along with a corrective order, will be imposed on Google, Google Korea and Google Asia Pacific.

Google said it does not agree with the Korean FTC’s decision, claiming it has not violated any local competition laws.

“We compete vigorously with other app markets and are proud of the benefits we deliver to developers, including the gaming industry and everyday users, through Google Play,” the U.S. tech giant said in a statement. “Unlike some mobile operating systems, Android gives developers complete control over how they distribute their apps.”

“Google makes substantial investments in the success of developers, and we respectfully disagree with the KFTC’s conclusions,” it said.
It said it will determine its future course of action against the FTC after carefully reviewing the written decision.

The Louisville, Kentucky, city government and police department conducted practices that violated the Constitution, according to a new investigation released Wednesday by the Department of Justice.

The Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government and the Louisville Metro Police Department had patterns of unlawful practices, Attorney General Merrick Garland said during a press conference in Louisville on Wednesday. The DOJ investigation, the results of which Garland announced Wednesday, was launched after Louisville police officers shot and killed Breonna Taylor in 2020. That shooting sparked nationwide protests and calls for police reform.

In its report, the DOJ had “reasonable cause to believe” that the city government and police department engaged in “a pattern or practice of conduct that deprives people of their rights under the Constitution and federal law.”

RBI cancels registration of Rhino Finance due to irregular lending practices

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India on Thursday said it has cancelled the registration of Guwahati-based Rhino Finance Private Ltd for irregular lending practices.

In a release, it said the Certificate of Registration (CoR) of Rhino Finance has been cancelled on account of violation of RBI guidelines on outsourcing and Fair Practices Code in its digital lending operations undertaken through third party apps which was considered detrimental to public interest.

“The company was also not complying with the extant regulations pertaining to charging of excessive interest and had resorted to undue harassment of customers for loan recovery purposes,” the RBI said.

Name of the services provider/mobile app associated with the company include Hello Loan, Credithub, KoKo Cash, Flash Loan, Bridge Loan, Crazy Bee and Rupee Bus.

With cancellation of the CoR, Rhino Finance shall not transact the business of a non-banking financial institution, the central bank said.

“He has denied meeting and document requests, skirted congressional oversight attempts, and refused to answer any of the serious questions we have asked,” Sanders said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Mr. Schultz has given us no choice, but to subpoena him.”

The Senate HELP Committee, which Sanders leads, will vote on the subpoena March 8.

It will also vote on whether to authorize an investigation into “major corporations’ labor law violations,” according to the statement from Sanders’ office.

The votes will be followed by a hearing on union organizing that will include testimony from several labor leaders, among them AFL-CIO President Liz Schuler.

Starbucks last month declined to have Schultz testify for a hearing scheduled March 9. Sanders and committee Democrats asked him to speak about the company’s compliance with federal labor law and its treatment of pro-union workers.

Starbucks offered its chief public affairs officer and executive vice president, AJ Jones, in lieu of Schultz, citing the CEO’s planned departure from the helm of the coffee chain.

  • Dominic Perrottet backs NSW ban on gay conversion practices as Sydney WorldPride begins

Dominic Perrottet backs NSW ban on gay conversion practices as Sydney WorldPride begins

    [ad_1]

A ban on gay conversion practices has secured the support of both major parties in New South Wales after Dominic Perrottet gave the reform “in-principle” backing on the first day of Sydney WorldPride.

“There is no room for any harmful practices in NSW, particularly if they affect our young and vulnerable,” the premier said. “When the parliament returns, my government will provide in-principle support for legislation that brings an end to any harmful practices.

“This is a complex matter and in working through it with parliamentary colleagues we will carefully consider the legal expression and effect of such laws.”

So-called gay conversion “therapy”, which has been outlawed in other east coast states, tries to change or suppress a person’s sexuality.

The Coalition’s support marks a major win for the independent Sydney MP, Alex Greenwich, who this month revealed he would introduce legislation to ban the practices.

At the time he said the major parties’ position on the bill would be key in a decision on who he would support in the case of a hung parliament after the 25 March state election.

“I’m grateful for the premier’s support to end LGBT conversion practices in NSW,” Greenwich said on Friday. “We start Sydney WorldPride with both Dominic Perrottet and Chris Minns backing legislation to support and protect the LGBTQ community in NSW. This is a good day for our state.”

Ghassan Kassisieh, the legal director of the national LGBTQ+ group Equality Australia, said the premier’s commitment was “a welcome first step”.

“Any scheme to end conversion practices will only be effective if it is inclusive of practices that seek to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity occurring in either health and religious settings, and include a civil scheme focused on stopping conversion practices before they cause harm,” he said.

Minns last week confirmed that a Labor government would ban the “dangerous and damaging” practices.

    skip past newsletter promotion

“We should not have a situation where children are being told something is wrong with them and that they need to be fixed,” he said.

Labor would set up a working group with survivors, advocates and government departments including NSW Health and justice to draft the laws, he said.

Key figures organising parts of Sydney WorldPride and Mardi Gras on Thursday issued a warning to the NSW government that the “world is watching”.

The 17-day festival celebrating LGBTQ+ pride kicks off on Friday and includes parties, a human rights conference and a march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on 5 March that is tipped to attract half a million people.

  • YouTube Music contract employees on strike over unfair labour practices

YouTube Music contract employees on strike over unfair labour practices

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Dozens of third-party employees at YouTube Music, hired by Alphabet sub-contractor tech company Cognizant, have gone on strike over alleged unfair labour practices.

According to a report in The Verge, 40 striking workers alleged that both companies’ management have “leveraged unfair labour practices to get in the way of their union drive”.

They alleged that the vast majority of them are ready to vote yes in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election.

“In an act of retaliation, our employer is forcing an end to remote work before the vote, which would dramatically interfere with the fair voting conditions mandated by federal law,” said YouTube Music generalist Sam Regan at a strike in Austin, Texas.

YouTube Music’s content operations team is expected to return to the Austin office early next week.

However, Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) said the majority of workers were hired remotely.

“Workers are paid as little as $19 dollars an hour and thus, cannot afford the relocation, travel or childcare costs associated with in person work,” the AWU said in a statement.

The AWU had filed an unfair labour practice charge with the NLRB.

Alphabet recently laid off 12,000 employees, or 6 per cent of its global workforce.

Google employees also staged protests in the US this week to call attention to labour conditions for sub-contracted workers and to support thousands of their recently laid-off co-workers.

Nearly 50 Google employees also protested outside a Ninth Avenue store in New York shortly after parent company Alphabet announced fourth-quarter profits of $13.6 billion.
