One of the nation’s most powerful Democratic bosses is stepping aside

    [ad_1]

Norcross says he was “involuntarily pushed to a different place” and has been “sitting in the backseat” ever since. After thinking through his future, Norcross says he’s ready to dramatically scale back his political activities and shift his focus to other professional and personal interests.

“We had a great run for almost 25 years,” he said in an exclusive interview with POLITICO. “And now it’s time for others to lead the party.”

It is a ground-shifting moment in New Jersey politics — one that could reshape the state’s Democratic Party and change the way things get done in Trenton. His decision also has implications for Democrats nationally because he has been a key behind-the-scenes player in fundraising and recruitment.

There are few people left in American politics quite like Norcross, who often blurred partisan lines and relished his leading role in the state’s ruthless political world. He dealt directly with governors and became a key ally to former Gov. Chris Christie, allowing the Republican to muscle his legislative priorities through a Democratic-led Legislature loaded with Norcross loyalists.

Norcross raised money for his brother from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and drew a visit to Camden from former President Barack Obama — yet he celebrated New Year’s at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, where he was a member.

The legislative defeats in 2021 marked a critical deceleration point for Norcross’ famed South Jersey machine.

After Sweeney lost his perch as the second-most powerful elected official in New Jersey, he was kicked off a redistricting commission that could have strengthened the congressional district of Rep. Donald Norcross, George Norcross’ brother. Earlier this year, George Norcross got into a dispute with Sweeney’s successor, state Sen. Nick Scutari, over campaign spending that ended in insults. And a super PAC linked to Norcross reported raising no money in the first quarter of this year despite legislative elections in November.

A decade earlier, Norcross found a somewhat unlikely ally in Christie. The Republican’s eight years in office were arguably the height of Norcross’ power.

Christie, Norcross and Sweeney effectively ran New Jersey, rolling back pension and health benefits for public employees, passing measures meant to cut taxes, overhauling the Camden police force and shepherding programs focused on revitalizing the city, once one of the poorest and most dangerous in America.

By many measures, those efforts in Camden have paid off.

The new Camden County police force has been held up as a model for other agencies, with lower rates of murder and violent crime in the decade since its realignment and Obama visiting Camden to tout the city’s progress. Cooper University Hospital, where Norcross is chair of the board of trustees, was close to bankruptcy two decades ago but announced plans last year for a $2 billion expansion. The hospital also received an ‘A’ grade this week for safety by The Leapfrog Group.

Though he has come under intense scrutiny over tax breaks paid to Camden businesses with which he has ties, including Cooper, Norcross has defended the use of corporate incentives as critical investments to rejuvenate the area.

“The results have proven themselves,” he said. “So we’re very proud of everything we’ve done.”

But Norcross said he spends about 90 percent of his time outside of New Jersey — he is officially a resident of Florida now — and is consumed by work for Cooper and the insurance firm he leads, Conner Strong & Buckelew. Between that and some leisure activities, such as golf and tennis, he said, “it leaves me not a whole lot of time” to focus on politics.

“When you’ve been doing this for so many years like I have, and you have this kind of devastating loss — there’s no other way to describe it — you find yourself probably a little less enthused,” he said.

Norcross would, however, support Sweeney if he runs for governor in 2025.

Sweeney has made no secret of his desire to run, but his path back to the state capitol looks increasingly limited given the shifting power dynamics within the Democratic Party and the early candidacy of Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a leading Democratic contender.

Norcross acknowledged the reordered landscape, saying state party Chair LeRoy J. Jones Jr. and Middlesex County Chair Kevin McCabe “are the Democratic Party leaders in the state of New Jersey, without a doubt.”

But Sweeney is like family to Norcross, so if he runs for governor, “I will do whatever he asks me to do,” Norcross said.

“It remains to be seen where that goes,” he said. “A lot can play out.”

  • CBI brand of truth, officers should act against corrupt, however powerful, without hesitation: PM

CBI brand of truth, officers should act against corrupt, however powerful, without hesitation: PM

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: There is today no dearth of political will to act against corruption and officers should take action against the corrupt, however powerful, without any hesitation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.

Addressing a gathering at the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the prime minister said the agency has developed as a brand of “truth and justice” over the last 60 years. Terming corruption the biggest roadblock to democracy and justice, he said the agency’s key responsibility is to free India from it.

Stressing that the CBI should not be distracted by those trying to tarnish its image, Modi said a developed India is not possible without professional and efficient institutions and this puts a huge responsibility on the agency.

    MS Education Academy

The CBI’s chief responsibility, he said, is to rid the country of corruption.

Corruption is not an ordinary crime, it snatches the rights of the poor, it begets many other crimes, corruption is the biggest obstacle in the path of justice and democracy, he said.

He asked the CBI to devise ways to fast-track its investigations against the corrupt because a languishing probe gives a sense of safety to the corrupt while innocent people keep suffering.

Those who benefitted from corruption for decades have created an ecosystem that attacks probe agencies. But the agencies should not be deterred by stories about the power of the corrupt and their ecosystem to tarnish them, Modi said.

“I am aware that the people you are acting against are very powerful…. These people will keep distracting you, but you have to focus on your work. No corrupt person should be spared. There should be no laxity in our efforts. This is the wish of the country, this is the wish of the people of the country. The country, law and constitution are with you,” the prime minister said.

“Today there is no dearth of political will to take action against corruption in the country. You should not hesitate to take action (against the corrupt, however powerful)…,” he told the gathering of CBI officers and personnel.

The CBI was established by a resolution of the Ministry of Home Affairs on April 1, 1963.

Referring to international transactions and the movement of people, goods and services on a large scale, even outside geographical boundaries, Modi said India’s economic power is growing while those who create obstacles are also rising.

He warned that attacks on India’s social fabric, its unity and brotherhood, and its economic interests and institutions would also increase.

“Corruption money will be spent on this,” the prime minister said, stressing the need to understand and study the multinational nature of crime and corruption.

Modi said India got a legacy of corruption at the time of Independence and lamented the fact that some people kept nourishing this malady instead of removing it.

While a discussion on trillion dollars refers to a strong economy these days, a decade ago, when the CBI celebrated its golden jubilee, such figures were used to describe scams in the country, he said.

“There was a competition underway on who will set a new record of corruption,” he said. The scams and the prevailing sense of impunity led to the destruction of the system, and an atmosphere of policy paralysis brought development to a standstill.

He said Internet banking and UPI stand in stark contrast to the earlier “phone banking” malaise, where loans worth thousands of crores of rupees were sanctioned on the basis of phone calls from influential people.

The beneficiaries scooted away with the public money, the prime minister said. He said the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act has so far enabled the confiscation of Rs 20,000 crore worth of properties of fugitive offenders.

Modi said the corrupt would even go to the extent of looting the aid given to beneficiaries of government schemes, be it rations, homes, scholarships or pensions, and the original beneficiary would feel conned every time.

Modi said the beneficiaries of government schemes are now getting their full entitlement due to the trinity of Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and mobile, and more than eight crore fake beneficiaries have been removed from the system.

“Due to DBT (direct benefit transfer), about Rs 2.25 lakh crore has been saved from falling into wrong hands,” he said.

The prime minister said it was the resolve of his government after assuming office in 2014 to launch a crackdown on corruption and benami properties, and it started to act against these evils on mission mode.

The prime minister said even today when a case remains unsolved, there are demands for it to be handed over to the CBI.

The CBI has earned people’s faith through its work and techniques, he said.

“CBI’s name is on everyone’s lips. It is like a brand for truth and justice. Even at the panchayat level, if some major crime happens, people want it to be referred to the CBI,” he said.

Modi said wherever there is corruption, the youth don’t get equal opportunities, and just one special eco-system gets emboldened.

Terming corruption the biggest enemy of merit, he said corruption gives encouragement to nepotism and dynastic rule.

When nepotism and dynastic rule increase, the country’s strength gets affected, and when the country’s strength gets weakened, it hampers development, he said.

The prime minister conferred medals on the recipients of the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Gold Medal for Best Investigating Officers of the CBI during the programme.

He also virtually inaugurated the newly constructed office complexes of CBI in Shillong, Pune and Nagpur, released a postage stamp and commemorative coin, and launched the Twitter handle of the agency.

Among those present were Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal.

In his welcome address, Jaiswal said the CBI has evolved from an agency combating corruption to a multidisciplinary investigative and prosecuting organisation of international repute.

“No wonder, the bureau enjoys the confidence of the judiciary as well as the common people and victims of crime who invariably demand its services to undo wrongs,” he said.

  • Sinema can’t quit the powerful online Democratic fundraising machine

Sinema can’t quit the powerful online Democratic fundraising machine

    [ad_1]

    20230207 sotu biden 25 francis 10

Sinema’s continued presence on the platforms shows the limits of her disdain for the Democratic Party: She might dislike sitting next to the party’s senators during lunch, but she’s still willing to take money from its small-dollar donors. Access to ActBlue could be hugely beneficial if Sinema runs for reelection — and in a three-way race in a state with a large independent vote share, Arizona’s seat could well tip control of a closely divided Senate.

An ActBlue spokesperson confirmed this week that the Arizona senator is still eligible to use the site as an independent with a record of caucusing with Democrats. Sinema was a substantial fundraiser on ActBlue during her 2018 Senate campaign, bringing in more than $11.7 million via the platform that cycle, according to FEC data, although her small-dollar support has largely dried up in the past few years. Between her Dec. 9 announcement that she was leaving the Democratic Party and the end of the year, she had raised a bit shy of $25,000 via the platform.

ActBlue — which has long served candidates facing each other in primaries — has looked to position itself as a neutral actor within the party’s broader fundraising ecosystem. The Arizona senator, who has yet to formally declare a 2024 run, puts that to a new test.

“At the end of the day, ActBlue is an incredibly important technology platform inside an incredibly formidable big tent,” ActBlue CEO Regina Wallace-Jones said in an interview with POLITICO last month. A longtime tech executive and former city councilor from East Palo Alto, Calif., Wallace-Jones was named ActBlue’s new leader in January.

She added: “It would be inappropriate in any way for us to be first movers bearing who is on the platform versus not. And we do have partners inside that tent that we will be taking cues from. So I do not imagine that we will be making that kind of a statement, and I do know that we’re in deep communications with others who have decision-making authority.”

Adding a new fundraising platform is a sign that Sinema is preparing for the possibility of running for reelection, likely as an independent. A spokesperson confirmed Sinema’s campaign is currently using both Anedot and ActBlue, but declined to address what that could mean for her 2024 plans.

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) announced his own Senate campaign in January, and is widely viewed as the likely Democratic nominee. No major Republicans have declared they are running, although former gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake has expressed interest.

ActBlue’s policies, which pre-date Wallace-Jones’ time at the head of the organization, say that independent or third-party incumbents can remain on the platform provided they have a “proven record” of caucusing with Democrats. Sinema no longer attends weekly caucus meetings, although she accepted Democrats’ committee assignments.

Sen. Angus King, another independent who caucuses with the Democrats, is permitted to use ActBlue under the organization’s policies. His campaign website links to the platform NationBuilder, although he also has an active ActBlue page. Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent though also a former Democratic presidential candidate, is among ActBlue’s most prolific fundraisers.

Compared to other fundraising platforms, ActBlue is a unique tool in part because so many candidates use it, which allows campaigns to split donations with ease. For repeat donors, who make up a large share of the Democratic donor base, it saves credit card information, making transactions easier.

“So many times where we would test using one processor or another, and just every time ActBlue would raise more for a variety of reasons,” said Taryn Rosenkranz, a longtime Democratic fundraising professional and founder of New Blue Interactive. “We never found anything that could net more for folks.”

ActBlue also currently hosts Marianne Williamson in her longshot bid against incumbent President Joe Biden. In rare cases, the platform has kicked off candidates, such as Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) who switched to the Republican party in 2019.

ActBlue has grown exponentially since its launch in 2004. The platform, which hosts federal, state and local candidates as well as progressive-aligned committees and nonprofits, reported processing donations from more than 7.4 million distinct donors last cycle.

In the 2022 calendar year, ActBlue processed more than $1.4 billion for federal campaigns and causes. That’s more than twice the roughly $620 million raised at the federal level through WinRed, the Republican counterpart that launched in 2019, according to the groups’ filings with the FEC.

Powerful blast creates crater in ground near India-Pak border in J-K’s Kathua

    [ad_1]

Hiranagar: A powerful blast has occurred at a hamlet near the India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, creating a huge crater in the ground and triggering fear among the locals, officials said on Thursday.

Sources said it appears to be an IED blast. they said.

Information about the explosion was received around 9.30 pm on Wednesday, SSP Kathua Shivdeep Singh Jamwal told PTI.

“We have also launched a search operation Thursday morning. The bomb squad has collected the samples from the site and sent them for tests,” the SSP said.

Block Development Committee (BDC) chairman Ram Lal Kaliya, a resident of Saniyal village which is just 300 metres from the border post, said, “Around 9.30 pm on Wednesday we heard an explosion. I informed the post incharge who also confirmed the sound of the blast.”

The blast site was located after one-and-half hours, he said, adding that a big crater was found in an agriculture field.

‘It’s a powerful effect’: Austin fires back at GOP senator’s blockade of military promotions

    [ad_1]

    us russia ukraine war 33376

“There are a number of things happening globally that indicate that we could be in a contest on any one given day,” Austin said. “Not approving the recommendations for promotions actually creates a ripple effect through the force that makes us far less ready than we need to be.”

“The effects are cumulative and it will affect families. It will affect kids going to schools because they won’t be able to change their duty station,” he added. “It’s a powerful effect and will impact on our readiness.”

On the other side is Tuberville, a member of the Armed Services Committee, who is following through on a threat to object to quick confirmations of Pentagon civilian nominees and senior military officer promotions after Austin rolled out policies that cover expenses and permit leave for troops who have to travel to obtain abortions.

President Joe Biden’s civilian nominees have been mired in Senate gridlock for much of his term. But senior military promotions typically cruise to Senate approval with little opposition, with the chamber sometimes approving hundreds of moves at once.

The volume of senior military promotions makes it harder for Senate Democrats to get around Tuberville’s objections than it is for civilian nominees. And Tuberville has indicated he won’t stop his obstruction of nominees unless the abortion policy is reversed or suspended.

Tuberville and Austin spoke last week, but the Alabama Republican hasn’t budged. Tuberville’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Senate Armed Services Chair Jack Reed (D-R.I.), who teed up the question at Tuesday’s hearing, agreed with Austin. He warned of senior military positions that would come open in the coming months, including the next Joint Chiefs chair.

“As I look forward, I have never in my almost three decades here seen so many key military positions coming up for replacement,” Reed said.

“If we cannot resolve the situation, we will be, in many respects, leaderless at a time of great conflict,” the chair warned. “So, I would hope we would expedite and move quickly on this front.”

A Defense Department official said the Pentagon projects that, between now and the end of the year, 650 general and flag officers will require Senate confirmation. Eighty of those are three and four-star generals or admirals, the official noted.

A plethora of senior military leaders are set to retire in the coming months, including top officers in the Marine Corps, Navy and Army. Multiple combatant commanders, including the heads of U.S. Northern Command, Space Command and Cyber Command, are also set to rotate out of their posts.

Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Mark Milley, who testified alongside Austin, is also set to retire in the fall when his four-year term as the military’s top officer expires.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has noted that the list includes officers tapped to command naval forces in the Pacific and Middle East, as well as a military representative to the NATO Military Committee.

In a speech Monday criticizing Tuberville, Schumer said the impasse risks “permanently politicizing the confirmation of military personnel.”

“If every single one of us objected to the promotion of military personnel whenever we feel passionately or strongly about an issue, our military would simply grind to a halt,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.

Paul McLeary and Lara Seligman contributed to this report.
