No-Confidence Motion: Unraveling the Dynamics of Political Accountability

Exploring the Essence of No-Confidence Motions

Motions of no confidence highlight the values of democratic accountability and openness. Governments are required to discuss issues in an open forum, explain justifications, and respond to inquiries. This improves the government’s responsiveness to the legislative and promotes a transparent culture that is popular with the populace.

    Historical Significance and Political Implications

No-confidence resolutions have an influence that goes beyond the walls of parliament in the digital era. Social media platforms increase public participation by easing the dissemination of facts, arguments, and viewpoints about such moves. Governments now need to negotiate this online environment and make sure that their communication plans complement both conventional and contemporary forms of public dialogue.

Assessing the Impact and Future of No-Confidence Motions

The risk of no-confidence resolutions keeps governments alert in coalition-based political systems. Smaller coalition partners’ participation can have a big impact because of their power to put out or support such measures. This dynamic acts as a continual reminder of the precarious equilibrium coalition governments must preserve in order to remain in power.

Hyderabad: Terming Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi as a political tourist, Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s (BRS) working president and minister KT Rama Rao said that politicians who are unemployed are provoking the youth of Telangana.

He said that the parties which did not work for the welfare of people while in power are now “preaching the state governments like Telangana which consistently ranked high in performance”.

Responding to Priyanka Gandhi’s Telangana visit for a political rally on youth issues, the BRS working president reminded her of the ‘decades-long history of failures of Congress Party’.

KTR criticized Congress for ‘exploiting’ youth, and employment issues solely for its politics. He said that the country would not have experienced an ‘unemployment crisis’ if Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced employment policy and worked like BRS. The Minister said that the Telangana government under the leadership of chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao provided employment to 2.2 lakh youth in the government and 22 lakh youth in the private sector.

The Minister said that Congress was at the ‘end of its wits’ as it was away from power for the past 10 years. He cited this as the reason for the ‘political unemployees’ of Congress trying to provoke the youth of Telangana.

Asserting that they will not be successful in the ‘vicious’ attempts, he asked them to compare the number of posts filled by Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh and by the Telangana government after formation of the state. He reminded about the ‘bitter experiences and injustice’ done to Telangana youth in interviews even after clearing written exams with merit.

He demanded Priyanka Gandhi apologize on behalf of the Congress party for taking the lives of hundreds of Telangana youth during the separate Telangana movement, by delaying the formation of the state for their political gains. KTR said that even the current Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee’s (TPCC) president Revanth Reddy termed Sonia Gandhi as the culprit (balidevatha) behind all the suicides.

The Minister said that Hyderabad is a global city that welcomes lakhs of tourists every day and it also welcomes ‘political tourists’ like Priyanka Gandhi.

He termed the Congress as a ‘sinking ship’ and suggested Priyanka Gandhi turn her political tour into an ‘educational tour’. He asked her to witness the growth of Telangana and learn by seeing the world class roads, flyovers, cable bridge and offices of the top MNCs in Hyderabad. KTR suggested that she ask fellow congressmen what people like superstar Rajinikanth spoke about Hyderabad. He invited her to understand local conditions and learn from what she sees there.

KTR highlighted the ‘failures’ during Congress rule like lack of drinking and irrigation water, issues with electricity, and lack of support for agriculture.

The Minister said that in stark contrast to the Congress rule, BRS led Telangana government provided 24*7 power, Rythu Bandhu, Aasaea pensions for the needy, Mission Bhagiratha etc. He suggested Priyanka learn from the inclusive and holistic developmental activities, and policies of Telangana, and implement them in Congress-ruled states.

He said that the people of Telangana who are ‘astute’ will secure their future by electing KCR who achieved formation of the state and that the ‘political tourist’ Priyanka Gandhi will realize this in the tour.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary will lead a rally and address a public meeting at Saroornagar stadium on Monday.

This is her maiden political visit to Telangana since the state’s formation in 2014.

Under BJP, ‘era of political patronage’ to criminals converted into ‘era of prison’: Naqvi

    [ad_1]

Moradabad: Former Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Sunday said under the BJP governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh the era of “political patronage” to criminals has been converted into an “era of prison” for such people.

Addressing public meetings here while campaigning for the urban civic bodies elections, the BJP leader said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts towards “political purification” have yielded results on the ground and the country is successfully moving forward on the path of development with dignity.

“Prime Minister Modi’s ‘mahayagya’ for political purification is the perfect solution for political pollution,” he was quoted as saying in a statement released by his office.

    MS Education Academy

The BJP’s good governance has demolished the “deceit of appeasement and communal politics” with determination of development without discrimination, Naqvi said.

“Phony political vendors of votes have been isolated and people’s participation in progress has created an atmosphere of trust with development,” he said.

The BJP leader said that the Modi-Yogi governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh have crushed the “curse of curfew, corruption and crime”.

The era of “political patronage” to corrupt and criminals has now been converted into an era of “prison” for such people, he said.

Naqvi also urged people to demolish barriers of caste, community, region and religion and move forward on the path of inclusive empowerment.

He also listened to the 100th episode of PM’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ with people in Moradabad.

  • National Security Leaks as Political Rorschach Tests

National Security Leaks as Political Rorschach Tests

    [ad_1]

    leaked documents investigation 61067

That anyone tried to paint Teixeira as a whistleblower hints at the degree to which national security leaks can become political Rorschach tests — inevitably interpreted through one’s partisan or ideological lens.

A decade ago, it was Republicans who blasted Edward Snowden while some on the left defended his actions. After those leaks, GOP House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon said, “Mr. Snowden was no whistleblower, but a spy and a traitor [who] put his personal politics and ambitions over the safety and well-being of his fellow citizens.” Democratic members of Congress, including Rep. John Conyers and Sen. Chris Coons, pushed back, arguing that Snowden’s revelations triggered a useful debate about the tradeoffs between liberty and security.

Still, even in today’s polarized atmosphere, partisanship alone does not explain the reaction to every leak. National security is one area where the ideological extremes of both parties often meet, with the far-left and far-right valorizing leakers because they view them as victims of a system they do not trust. A further complication is that by their very nature, whistleblowers are often contrarian, cantankerous and self-righteous — and that automatically makes them polarizing figures.

The Teixeira episode underscores the limits of seeing partisanship as the key factor in explaining the political response to leaks: Most Republicans were quick to distance themselves from Greene’s comments, including some who wholeheartedly share Greene’s skepticism about the war in Ukraine. And while some Democrats defended Snowden, many others signed on to bipartisan letters condemning the national security leaks. The Obama administration did its darnedest to prosecute Snowden.

The partisan politics of national security whistleblowing are also muddied by the fact that whatever is being leaked often implicates both parties. In the case of Snowden, for example, the NSA programs and surveillance he disclosed had their origins in the Bush administration but continued under Barack Obama. Chelsea Manning’s document dump covered multiple administrations. Daniel Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers when Richard Nixon was president but the documents he provided to the New York Times and Washington Post implicated the Kennedy and Johnson administration’s policies in Vietnam.

In some cases, whistleblowers reveal conduct that has nothing to do with the party in power and everything to do with the flawed standard operating procedures of the national security bureaucracies — in Teixeira’s case, how in the hell he got a security clearance in the first place. In such circumstances, the opposition party always has an incentive to attack the current administration for lax national security safeguards, making it more difficult for those politicians to simultaneously express sympathy with the intent of the leaker.

Another reason the partisan framing does not explain everything is that there are legitimate debates within each party about the power vested in the national security establishment. Progressives on the left and libertarians on the right fundamentally disagree on the state’s role in regulating the market. When it comes to national security, however, they are in lockstep opposition to an expansive national security state. That holds with particular force in the case of whistleblowers. Ellsberg and Snowden acted as they did because they believed the government was either lying to the American people or engaging in activities that stretched federal authority beyond what was publicly known. Progressives and libertarians also share a belief in the overclassification of information. Even though Teixeira revealed sources and methods in his postings, it may be awkward for Republicans to criticize his actions while defending Donald Trump’s post-presidential possession of classified documents.

Perhaps the most important complicating factor is that when one individual is responsible for the leaks, that person defines the narrative — for good or ill. Whistleblowers can be a difficult group to like; many Americans will find it wrong when someone with top secret information turns on the organization that trusted them. As one scholarly analysis of the phenomenon acknowledged, “Even when the actions of whistleblowers are subjectively motivated by moral concerns, they may be perceived by others as ill-considered and as having immoral (or at least problematic) side effects.”

Furthermore, an awful lot of the people who leak wind up being something less than the heroic martyr that some imagine them to be. Mark Felt, the high-ranking FBI official dubbed “Deep Throat” during Watergate, did not leak information to Bob Woodward out of the goodness of his heart — it was part of a self-serving (and unsuccessful) plan to become the next FBI director. As one biographer put it: “Felt didn’t help the media for the good of the country, he used the media in service of his own ambition.” Edward Snowden, now a Russian citizen, has been mostly silent about that country’s brutal invasion of Ukraine even as he criticized the Biden administration for wanting to regulate cryptocurrencies. Teixeira leaked information to multiple Discord groups to gain attention from others, not for any ideological or policy reason. He also trafficked in racial and antisemitic slurs on those channels.

It is also the case that sometimes the content of the leaks is interpreted differently from what the leaker intended or outside observers expected. Wikileaks’ Cablegate was supposed to be an exposé of perfidious U.S. foreign policy behavior; mostly it revealed that U.S. diplomats were saying the same things in private that they were saying in public. Similarly, Teixeira’s leaks have publicized diplomatic initiatives and security assessments that the Biden administration wanted kept secret. Contrary to the claims of Carlson and Greene, however, there is little that is new in these leaks about the war in Ukraine.

If there is a pattern, it might be that more conservative leakers act out of a sense of personal ambition and more liberal leakers do so out of a sense of indignation. But the political reaction to any leak is a combination of partisanship, ideology and the inherent fact that not all leakers are selfless whistleblowers.

  • Risky political vacuum by Aug 2019 decision cannot be filled airdropped leaders: Farooq

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Apr 29 (GNS): National Conference President & MP from Srinagar Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Saturday cautioned people against the forces working to weaken J&K from within.

This he said while addressing party functionaries here at the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subha, Srinagar.

Cautioning the functionaries against the forces working against the interests of the people of J&K, Dr Farooq said, “It’s for us to understand what the division of our voices would entail or what its results would be. Any misstep at this juncture would have far reaching consequences. They don’t want the real representative voices of J & K to take center stage and be heard. Having real and representative voices in place makes their pursuit of reckless experimentation in the region more difficult.”

Calling for stepping up the party’s outreach to people, he said, “Our workers should knock every door and inform people about the challenges ahead of the region. Party’s vision & mission has to reach every home. Today, we see mushrooming of political parties and leaders in every nook and corner of Kashmir. The risky political vacuum created by the decisions of August 2019 cannot be filled by such airdropped leaders. It is only a representative government that will meet the challenge of instilling faith in the hearts of people.”

Among others General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, Addl General Secretary Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, State Women’s wing President Shameema Firdous, Zone Presidents Ali Muhammad Dar, Javed Ahmed Dar, Provincial Secretary Showkat Ahmed Mir, YNC Provincial President Salman Ali Sagar, Provincial women’s wing President Er. Political visibility of Indian-Americans far bigger than 1% population share

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: With a likely Joe Biden vs Donald Trump redux in the impending 2024 US presidential elections, the Indian-Americans — comprising slightly more than 1 per cent of the total US population and less than a per cent of all registered voters — will be in the spotlight once again, courtesy their growing political, social and economic clout.

While they are concentrated in states like New York, New Jersey, California and Texas, Indian-Americans have begun to matter more in the closely-contested states, and their votes might turn out to be decisive in case of swing states like Georgia, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

In general, Indian-Americans have largely sided with the Democrats, but like in the last elections, both Democrats and Republicans will leave no stone unturned to attract a community that can play a pivotal role — from campaigning to endorsing candidates to fundraising for the elections.

    MS Education Academy

According to media reports, for his 2024 campaign, Biden is bringing together a newer generation of diverse leadership along with experienced advisors who helped him win the White House in 2020.

The South Asians for America (SAFA), a grassroots organisation dedicated to education, advocacy, and mobilisation of the South Asian community, recently announced that they will endorse both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 run.

“By re-electing President Biden and Vice President Harris, we hope to continue to strengthen our democracy at home, advance our democratic values, and continue to strengthen our global alliances in an ever-changing global landscape,” said Neha Dewan, National Director of SAFA.

Biden’s major fundraisers, which include Indian-Americans, had helped raise at least $100,000 for his 2020 campaign.

To name a few, a likely list includes prominent Indian-American community organisations and leaders like Ajay Bhutoria, Frank Islam, Raj Shah, Ramesh Kapoor, Indian-American Impact, Indiaspora and AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) Victory Fund.

Trump, meanwhile, had won over Indian supporters with events like ‘Howdy Modi’ and for his open support and friendship for India in the past.

During his re-election campaign in 2020, he had launched four new coalitions — ‘Indian Voices for Trump’, ‘Hindu Voices for Trump’, ‘Sikhs for Trump’ and ‘Muslim Voices for Trump’ — to amass support from these communities.

This year, Shalabh ‘Shalli’ Kumar, a fierce Trump supporter, has been appointed the national chairman of a new Republican Hindu and Indian American coalition, according to a Republican National Committee announcement.

The two coalitions, apart from building and mobilising Hindu and Indian American communities across the US, will assist the indicted leader in his 2024 campaign. An official word is awaited, though.

Apart from Chicago-based industrialist Kumar, who was also the financial backer and chair of the 2016 Indian Americans for Trump Campaign, loyalist Kash Patel, who joined the Trump administration in 2019, continues to serve as a key political advisor to Trump.

Patel’s staunch loyalty towards Trump scored brownie points from former advisor Roger Stone who remarked that the former president named his dog “Kash” as an “homage” to Patel.

Since Trump formally announced his re-election bid in November, Patel has been reportedly mentioned on right-wing media as a potential contender for attorney general or CIA director, according to ABC News.

“If Trump’s back in, I’m back in,” Patel, a former federal prosecutor and senior intelligence official, had said in a December interview.

Other top Trump supporters include, Danny Gaekwad, who has raised funds for all Republican presidential candidates since George W Bush, Sridhar Chityala, who is on the advisory board of Indian voice for Trump Coalition, Rick Desai, Dr Sampat Shivangi, Shridhar Chityala, and Prem Parameswaran to name a few.

Will be grossly misunderstood if I offer coffee to a political rival, says Sitharaman

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Political discourse has deteriorated in the country, and there is a dearth of cordiality, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday.

Simple acts like offering a coffee to a political opponent can be “grossly misunderstood”, the senior minister said.

Sitharaman, who also handles the corporate affairs portfolio, said this was not the case in the past and recalled the bonhomie between Chakravarti Rajagopalachari of the Congress and P Ramamurti of the Communist Party of India in Madras Presidency and Tamil Nadu despite being staunch political rivals.

    MS Education Academy

The minister said Rajaji used to carry coffee from his home in a flask, and interjected Ramamurti mid-speech to offer him the coffee, after which they went back to their respective ideological positions.

“I can’t imagine giving a cup of coffee (now) it can be grossly misunderstood,” Sitharaman said, speaking at the launch of veteran banker N Vaghul’s book ‘Reflections’ here.

Sitharaman said there was some personal regard for one another even in the most bitter of the political rivalries and added that leaders were full of amity and cordiality then.

She also made references to Vaghul’s frequent run-ins with the political executives and added that wielding of power by a person or those around him can make or break a career.

The minister said she had also heard about how bankers had to constantly face interferences by the political executive Vaghul quit from a state-owned bank at 47 and also alluded to a specific instance of a Minister of State trying to assert power in the absence of his senior, a Cabinet Minister.

The minister also said that for forty years, each government competed with the previous one for showing that they are more socialist than the dispensation that preceded it.

She said that for the first time in India’s history, the budget presented by her in 2021 had a mention of the word “privatisation”, courtesy of the backing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Vaghul, a veteran banker, said the degradation of values in the country is “bothering” him, pointing specifically to corruption symbolises not only a person’s greed but also a decline in moral values.

He said the reforms of 1991 were half-baked as they did not fully dismantle the state-run enterprises, and called himself a servant of the free market ever since he heard Rajaji attack communists.

Speaking at the same event, veteran banker KV Kamath called Vaghul, with whom he had a long association, as the builder of a new construct for banking in India.

Industrialist Ajay Piramal, whose company counted on Vaghul as a board member for over 25 years, said apart from building ICICI Bank into a formidable bank, Vaghul also was central in the establishment of the rating agency Crisil and also encouraged diversity.

Michel first met Malaysian financer Low Taek Jho in 2006, when the businessman usually known as Jho Low was dropping huge sums of money and hobnobbing with the likes of Paris Hilton. Low helped finance Hollywood films, including “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

DiCaprio testified Low had appeared to him as a legitimate businessman and had mentioned wanting to donate to Obama’s campaign.

Michel also testified in his own defense. He said Low wanted a picture with Obama in 2012 and was willing to pay millions of dollars to get it. Michel agreed to help and used some of the money he got to pay for friends to attend fundraising events. No one had ever told him that was illegal, he said.

Prosecutors said Michel was donating the money on Low’s behalf, and later tried to lean on the straw donors with texts from burner phones to keep them from talking to investigators.

After the election of Donald Trump, prosecutors say Michel again took millions to halt an investigation into allegations Low masterminded a money laundering and bribery scheme that pilfered billions from the Malaysian state investment fund known as 1MDB. Low is now an international fugitive and has maintained his innocence.

Michel also got paid to try and persuade the U.S. to extradite back to China a government critic suspected of crimes there without registering as a foreign agent, prosecutors said.

On that charge, the defense pointed to testimony from Sessions, who was Trump’s top law enforcement officer until he resigned in 2018. Sessions said he’d been aware the Chinese government wanted the extradition but didn’t know Michel. The rapper’s ultimately futile efforts to arrange a meeting on the topic didn’t seem improper, the former attorney general said.

Political leaders meet people from corporate sector: Raut on Pawar-Adani meeting

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Friday played down NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s meeting with industrialist Gautam Adani, saying that political leaders do meet people from the corporate sector.

The Adani Group chairman met the Nationalist Congress Party chief a day before.

“Sharad Pawar or for that matter every big political leader meets people from the corporate sector,” Raut said in response to a question by reporters here.

    MS Education Academy

The meeting assumed some significance as earlier this month Pawar had said the Supreme Court-appointed panel will be more useful than a Joint Parliamentary Commitee for looking into US-based Hindenburg Research’s allegations against the Adani group.

The NCP chief, thus, appeared to be breaking ranks with opposition leaders who have been demanding a JPC on the Adani issue.

Later Pawar said he will not oppose the demand for a JPC.

Raut, incidentally, also met Pawar after the latter’s meeting with Adani.

“We keep meeting, and Pawar is a key leader of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (the alliance of Sena (UBT), NCP and Congress). What is surprising if we or Congress leaders meet Pawar. We had a discussion on many issues in the country and state,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.
