Capitol Police officers to attend sentencing of man who maced Sicknick on Jan. 6

The family wrote a series of pained and impassioned letters to the court urging a harsh sentence for Khater. It wasn’t immediately clear whether members of Sicknick’s family would also attend the sentencing hearing.

Prosecutors echoed their sentiment, agreeing that Khater bore responsibility for Sicknick’s death and urging Hogan to impose a 90-month sentence.

“While Julian Khater’s spray assault on Officer Sicknick ultimately was not determined to be the direct cause of his death,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Gilead Light wrote in a 30-page sentencing memo, “Officer Sicknick’s tragic demise, so close in time to the traumatic events of that day, underscores the seriousness of the offense committed by Khater and his fellow rioters.”

Khater’s attack became a significant flashpoint in the Jan. 6 riot. In addition to spraying Sicknick, he sprayed Caroline Edwards, a Capitol Police officer who had already been injured during the initial breach of police lines that afternoon. Edwards was a witness at the Jan. 6 select committee’s first public hearing and described the horrors she witnessed as a mob of then-President Donald Trump’s supporters surged past police lines and into the Capitol.

The sentencing hearing is sure to be wrenching, a stark reminder of the real-world pain caused by the Jan. 6 attack. While many Capitol Police officers have taken the trek to the courthouse to testify in Jan. 6 trials or make victim impact statements in cases in which they were personally scarred by the actions of a particular defendant, Friday’s hearing appears to be the first organized, collective action by a large swath of the department in support of a fallen officer.

Other Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department officers died subsequent to the events of Jan. 6, including at least two by suicide. One member of the mob, Ashli Babbitt, was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer as she tried to breach the House chamber. Several others in the crowd that day died amid the chaos.

Khater’s family has pleaded with Hogan for leniency.

“I am not excusing his actions, your Honor, only pleading for a second chance for Julian to truly live a life of service and repentance,” his mother, Eleanor Khater, wrote in a letter to the judge. “I place my son in your hands, in the desperate hope that you will show him compassion and leniency.”

In a sentencing memo urging Hogan to give Khater a sentence of time-served — his 22 months of post-arrest detention — his attorneys Joseph Tacopina and Chad Seigel cited Khater’s anxiety disorder and a pervasive mob mentality as the root causes of his behavior.

“A climate of mass hysteria, fueled by the dissemination of misinformation about the 2020 election, originating at the highest level, gave rise to a visceral powder keg waiting to ignite,” Tacopina and Seigel wrote. “And that is precisely what occurred.”

The attorneys also described Khater’s pretrial detention as “extraordinarily harsh,” particularly amid restrictions imposed as a result of the Covid pandemic.

Khater was born in New Jersey, but his father moved the family to war-torn Lebanon when he was 5, until 2006, when his family fled and returned to the United States. He agreed to attend Trump’s Jan. 6 rally when asked by a friend, George Tanios, to join him. Tanios has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor offenses stemming from the attack.

Andhra student dies after being struck by a police vehicle in US

    [ad_1]

New York: A 23-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh died after being struck by a police patrol vehicle in Seattle, a media report said.

Jaahnavi Kandula, a student of Northeastern University campus in South Lake Union, was walking near Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street when she was hit by a Seattle Police vehicle on Monday, The Seattle Times reported.

Police arrived at the scene just after 8 p.m. and immediately started with CPR after they found Kandula with life threatening injuries. She was later transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries.

The officer driving the patrol SUV was responding to a priority one call at the request of the Seattle Fire Department just after 8 p.m., according to the Seattle Police Department. The police did not name the officer but said in a statement that he has been with the department since November 2019.

“At this point in the investigation, we have no reason to believe the officer intended to hit that woman,” Seattle Police Department spokesperson Detective Valerie Carson told Seattle Times.

Carson further said that Kandula’s death will not be investigated as a use of force case, and the officer has not been placed on leave.

“I was in shock,” Ashok Mandula, victim’s uncle, told Seattle Times after he was informed of the tragedy.

He said Kandula first travelled to the United States in 2021 from Adoni in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, and spent a month with his family.

Daughter of a single mother who teaches in an elementary school in Adoni, Kandula was to receive a master’s in information systems this December, Mandula told Times.

He added that Kandula’s mother had taken a loan for her education. Detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad will lead the investigation, Seattle Police said.

  • Bihar: Police register case against protesters tearing ‘Pathaan’ posters in Bhagalpur

Bihar: Police register case against protesters tearing ‘Pathaan’ posters in Bhagalpur

    [ad_1]

Bhagalpur: Officials of Bihar Police on Thursday booked 25 persons, accused of agitating in front of a cinema hall against Pathaan movie in State’s Bhagalpur.

“Legal action is being taken against 10 people and 15 unknown people by registering a case in Jogsar police station on the charge of protesting against the film Pathan,” police said.

Earlier on Tuesday, some miscreants, believed to be from Hindu organisations, burnt and tear the Pathaan movie’s poster outside the Deepprabha cinema hall in Bihar’s Bhagalpur, a day before the movie’s release.

The youth of Hindu organizations tore the posters in the cinema hall and set it on fire, raising slogans of ‘Film Chalega Hall Jalega’.

“The youth said that Hindutva cannot be compromised. Any element that opposes the Sanatan culture will not be tolerated in Bhagalpur including the whole of India,” said the members of the Hindu organisation.

The members of the organisation added that if Pathan is shown in any theatres of Bhagalpur, it will be strongly opposed.

The manager Lalan Singh said that some anti-social elements have burnt the poster opposing the film.

He further added that an application has been given to the local police station and SP, and the administration has assured that security will be given.

Earlier on January 5, members of a Right-Wing organization created a ruckus at Alpha One Mall in Ahmedabad’s Vastrapur during the promotion of the film. The organization’s members during their protest tore down pictures of Shah Rukh Khan as well as his co-stars.

The protesters also threatened the mall authority that if this film is released, then they will start an even fiercer protest.
The protesters were captured in a video damaging property of the mall. In a video shared by the VHP, protesters could be seen shouting slogans and tearing posters and large cut-outs of ‘Pathaan’s star cast.

The controversy started after Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra, aired his objections to one of the songs of the movie, released as ‘Besharam Rang’.

Mishra said, “The costumes in the song at first glance are objectionable. It is clearly visible that the song of the film ‘Pathaan’ has been shot with a dirty mindset.”

  • BBC docu screening: Police receive cross complaints from JNUSU, ABVP

BBC docu screening: Police receive cross complaints from JNUSU, ABVP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Police said on Wednesday that they have received cross complaints from both Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNSU) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) a day after high drama prevailed on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Tuesday night, with JNSU members alleging that they were attacked with stones while watching a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A senior police officer said they have received cross complaints from JNUSU and ABVP, which are being looked into, adding that further action will be taken accordingly.

Two students have alleged that they were harassed and assaulted by the JNU students’ union members. However, the claims were rejected by JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh.

Ghosh claimed that ABVP members threw stones at a gathering watching the BBC documentary, and the two complainant, both ABVP members, were not harassed.

A section of students under the banner of JNUSU had distributed pamphlets for the screening of the documentary at 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Several students had gathered at the JNU students’ union office for the screening of the BBC documentary.

However, the electricity connection at the JNUSU office was snapped on Tuesday and students said that they were watching the documentary on their cellphones when stones were pelted on them.

Gaurav, a second-year post-graduate student and an ABVP member, claimed that he was assaulted by JNUSU members though he did not pelt stone on them.

“Me and my friend were going for tea when we noticed a gathering of several people on the campus. Soon, we were surrounded by some students who grabbed me and even dragged me. I am a heart patient and have anxiety issues. But still they harassed me,” said Gaurav.

Late on Tuesday night, scores of students had also marched to the Vasant Kunj police station to lodge a complaint against the alleged stone pelters while raising slogans against the JNU administration.

The JNU administration was of the view that “such unauthorised activities on the campus may disturb peace and harmony” in the university. However, even after the warning, when the students remained adamant, the university administration decided to disconnect electricity and internet connection.

The varsity had earlier stated that no prior permission was sought from the JNU administration for the screening of the documentary.

Meanwhile, ABVP’s JNU unit president Rohit Kumar said the students’ body “welcomes the instructions to stop the screening of the documentary”.

“The BBC has been working to tarnish the image of India by making documentaries with fake agenda,” he said.

The Central government had earlier termed the BBC documentary as propaganda against the Prime Minister and the country.

BBC docu screening: Delhi Police detains 4 Jamia students

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police Wednesday said they have detained four students after the Left-affiliated Students’ Federation of India (SFI) announced a plan to screen a controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus.

The university administration said the screening will not be allowed and that they are taking all measures to prevent people and organisations with a “vested interest to destroy the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university”.

A Delhi Police official said four SFI members were detained, just hours before the screening planned for 6 pm by the student body. The SFI called for a protest at 4 pm against the detention.

The SFI’s Jamia unit has released a poster informing the documentary will be screened at 6 pm at the MCRC lawn gate no 8.

The SFI issued a statement following the detention.

    “In an atrocious manner, Azeez, a student of Jamia Milia Islamia and SFI Jamia Unit Secretary; Nivedya, a Jamia Student and SFI South Delhi Area Vice President;
Abhiram and Tejas, both Jamia students and SFI Unit members have been detained by the Delhi Police prior to the screening of the documentary,” the SFI said.

“The SFI Jamia Unit had decided to screen the BBC documentary today on the campus,” it added.

The university administration also issued a statement, saying no permission has been sought for the screening of the documentary and it will not be allowed.

“It has come to the knowledge of the university administration that some students belonging to a political organisation have circulated a poster about screening of a controversial documentary film on the university campus today,” the university said in a statement.

The university earlier issued a memorandum/circular reiterating that no meeting/gathering of students or screening of any film shall be allowed on the campus without the permission of the competent authority.

The varsity said strict disciplinary action shall be taken against organisers in case of any violation.

“The university is taking all possible measures to prevent people/organisations having a vested interest to destroy the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university,” it said.

The SFI attempt to screen the documentary at the Jamia campus comes a day after a similar event was organised at the Jawaharlal Nehru University during which students claimed that power and internet were suspended and stones were thrown at them.
