  • Fiancé Stabber Sent to Six Day Police Remand

    [ad_1]

    by Syed Shadab Ali Gillani

SRINAGAR: A Srinagar Court has sent a young lady to six days police remand. She was arrested after she stabbed and injured her fiancé on Tuesday.

“Asifa Bashir, who stabbed her fiancé, Adil Ahmad Kaloo of Bemina, in the Chattabal area of Srinagar yesterday and is presently lodged in women’s police station, Rambagh under IPC 307 and 323 with FIR No 57/2023 in Safakadal PS, has been put on six-day remand by the court for further investigations,” said a police officer.

The stabbing shocked Kashmir as this is perhaps the first case in which a young lady stabbed her fiancé.

The family of the victim claimed their son received a call from Asifa Bashir who is his fiancé and he went to meet her. “She sought lift from him and he went to drop her. Asifa got a call and he inquired about the caller. The argument between them turned ugly when the woman stabbed him in his abdomen,” said family

Family sources said the nikkah of the two was outcome of the love affair. The nikkah has already taken place.

There was also a viral video on social media showing an injured Adil seeking help after the attack with blood seeping from his lower abdomen. Passers-by assisted him in transporting the man to the SMHS hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

The lady, who is being projected as ‘social media influencer’ has been running a social media page. Her page indicates that she has interviewed a number of Kashmir politicians and bureaucrats. She also claims to have earned the Maharashtra National Women Achievers Award. A photograph in circulation shows she being honoured.

One of the relatives of the victim told local news gatherer KNT that the accused was always carrying a ‘mike-logo’ with her and was running a FB page named: ‘Kashmir Dastan News Network’.

Last month, Asifa Bashir made headlines when she claimed that the proprietor of a pet store was responsible for the death of her pet.

The proprietor of the pet store, Abrar Baba, has filed a defamation case against her. “I have filed a defamation lawsuit against her. Later, few people pestered me to drop this case, but I was steadfast in my decision. My store has been closed for more than a month now,” Abrar said.

Bengal Ram Navami clashes: NIA seeks details from state police

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: National Investigation Agency (NIA) probing the Ram Navami violence in Howrah and Hooghly districts of West Bengal, on Wednesday, sought from the state police all the documents, including copies of the FIRs, related to the case.

A communique on this count has reached the offices of the commissioners of Chandernagore Police Commiserate and Howrah City Police, sources said.

A copy of the same has also been forwarded to the office of the additional director general in charge of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police.

    MS Education Academy

Although initially CID-West Bengal took over the investigation, on April 27, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered an NIA probe into it.

It is learnt that NIA has sought a quick response from the state police authorities so that their sleuths can start the investigation at the earliest.

Meanwhile, state government sources said that the administration is mulling the possibility of approaching the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the division bench of the Calcutta High Court directing NIA probe into the matter.

On April 27, while directing the NIA to take over the probe in the matter, Calcutta High Court’s division bench of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya also directed the state police to handover all case-related documents to the NIA within the next two weeks.

While passing the order, the bench observed that it is beyond the ability of the state police to find those who were responsible for the clashes or who instigated it and hence a probe by a central agency was necessary.

Earlier, the division bench questioned the efficiency of the intelligence wing of the state police regarding the pelting of stones from the roofs of residences in the troubled belts.

The bench questioned the failure of the intelligence in getting information about stones being accumulated on the rooftops.

  • Police Distributing Census Forms, Seeking Details Across Srinagar

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Police have been distributing “census” forms across Srinagar, seeking personal details of people including their phone numbers and occupation, reported Hindustan Times

Police acknowledged the conduct of the exercise, but refused to cite the reasons for it. Notably, the economics and statistics department said the Government of India has not started any census exercise in Kashmir.

“Officially the government of India has not yet notified the start of the census,” Srinagar district statistics and evaluation officer Anika Mushtaq said, adding that she went through the forms and they were not part of any census exercise, reported Hindustan Times

The forms titled “Census Format 2023” with name of respective police station of the area has a blank space where name of the ‘mohalla’ has to be jotted down. Each family has to fill the form with details like house number, name of the family head with cell number, family members, and their relation with family head. There are separate columns for age and occupation, along with two other “lat” and “long” columns.

The residents of Old City said that police officials have been visiting mohallas and handing over forms to the elderly people and mosque management heads to forward them to residents.

“Last month, three policemen visited me and handed over the forms. They want people to fill in the details which are there in ration cards besides phone numbers and Aadhar numbers. A few days back, they called again and wanted the forms submitted as soon as possible. We have no idea why they are seeking such details,” he said.

Another Srinagar resident said the police were dropping such forms in mosques to be handed over to people for submission. “Earlier they asked residents to submit details of tenants which were alright owing to some criminal cases. But this latest form is seeking personal details of everyone and is very disturbing,” he said.

When questioned about the issue in a message, additional director general of police, Vijay Kumar refused to comment saying he “explained it during a recent Iftar dinner and won’t repeat”. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Srinagar, meanwhile, Rakesh Balwal remained unavailable for comments despite multiple attempts.

Such data collection exercises by police are not new in Kashmir. Police had in 2012 issued similar “census” forms, which had elicited harsh reactions from civil society terming it “political and racial profiling”. Police had defended such actions on the pretext of “modern policing”. By 2016, such forms had become more intrusive like residents had to file details like their affiliations to religious sects or ‘maslak’, reported Hindustan Times

  • Traffic Police Cracks Down On Minor Driving With Intensified Two Wheeler Document Checks

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Traffic police authorities are conducting random document checks of two-wheelers here “to curb driving by minors”.

A senior traffic official said that the drive is an ongoing process of enforcement, but this time its primary purpose is to curb minor driving. “Many two-wheelers were seized for various traffic violations as they were found riding without full documents, while many were without a driving license,” the official said.

He said they have directions from higher-ups to make frequent random document checks for two-wheelers and other vehicles.

The official also said that they are identifying more two-wheeler riders involved in stunt biking and are calling them, along with their parents, for counseling. “The main purpose of the drive is to curb negligent and rash driving by minors; on a daily basis, many two-wheelers and other vehicles are seized for driving by either minors or other traffic rule violations,” he said.

Recently, Srinagar city witnessed an upsurge in stunt biking, after which the city traffic police authorities started identifying them through social media handles.

According to the traffic police authorities, primarily youths from other districts of the valley were found involved in stunt biking, with some youths coming to Srinagar from as far as the extreme north of Kashmir to do bike stunts. (KNO)
