MLA Abbas Ansari’s wife sent to police custody for ‘illegally’ meeting husband in jail

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: A court here on Thursday remanded Nikhat Bano, the wife of Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari, in police custody for three days.

Nikhat Bano was arrested on February 10 for illegally meeting her jailed husband in the deputy jailer’s room in Chitrakoot district.

The jail superintendent and seven other staff members were suspended for laxity and departmental action was initiated against them.

Lokesh Varun, the special judge of the court hearing cases lodged under the Prevention of Corruption Act, sent Nikhat Bano to police custody for three days. Her driver Niyaj Ahmad, another accused in the case, was remanded in police custody for five days.

Hearing the matter through video-conferencing, the court said the remand period would begin from 10 am on Friday.

Investigating officer Harsh Pandey had moved an application seeking police remand of both the accused.

The court was told that the two were arrested from the jail compound in Chitrakoot.

The court was also told that Nikhat Bano had kept her iPhone locked and it was necessary to unlock it so that relevant information could be collected.

It was also stated that Ahmad had not handed over his mobile phone to police and it was necessary to trace the phone to ascertain the involvement of others.

Abbas Ansari, the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA from Mau and son of jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has been in prison for the last three months in connection with a money-laundering case.

Apart from her mobile phone, many “objectionable” articles were found from Nikhat Bano’s possession, police had said.

On the basis of a complaint from Sub-Inspector in-charge of the Ragauli Jail police station Shyamdev Singh, an FIR was lodged against five people — Nikhat Bano, Ahmad, Jail Superintendent Ashok Sagar, the deputy jailor and a constable.

They were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 222 (intentional omission to apprehend on the part of public servant bound to apprehend person under sentence or lawfully committed), 186 (voluntarily obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his public functions), 506 (criminal intimidation), 201, which deals with tampering with evidence, and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Police had also seized Saudi Arabian currency from Nikhat Bano.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Abbas Ansari (30) in November last year after a long questioning session at the federal agency’s office in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Turkey police arrests 78 people for provocative posts on earthquake

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Turkish police announced on Wednesday the arrest of 78 people accused of spreading fear and panic by sharing provocative posts on social media about two devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6.

Turkish police said that 20 of the detainees who were arrested are being held and are awaiting trial.

In the same context, the General Directorate of Security in Turkey stated that it had identified 613 people accused of publishing provocative publications, and that legal procedures had begun against 293 people, and the Public Prosecution ordered the arrest of 78 of them, Reuters reported.

The directorate added that 46 websites were blocked for their involvement in fraudulent schemes to try to steal donations destined for earthquake victims, and 15 accounts on social networking sites were closed for impersonating official institutions.

On February 6, the earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria with a magnitude of 7.7, followed hours later by another with a magnitude of 7.6 and dozens of aftershocks, which left great losses in lives and property in both countries.

It is worth noting that the death toll from the two devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria has exceeded 41,000, while millions need humanitarian aid.

  • IIT-B student’s death: Mumbai Police quiz kin; candle marches in Guj on Feb 19

IIT-B student’s death: Mumbai Police quiz kin; candle marches in Guj on Feb 19

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A three-member team of Mumbai Police on Thursday met the family members of Darshan Solanki, a student of IIT-Bombay who ended his life on the Powai campus on February 12 – and recorded their statements, a family member said.

The police called on Solanki’s family members at their home in Maninagar on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on Thursday morning and posed various questions pertaining to 18-year-old Solanki’s sudden death.

Simultaneously, several student bodies in Gujarat will hold a peace procession which will culminate with a candle-lit march to pay homage to Solanki, the relative told IANS, but declined to be quoted.

The procession and candle march will be held in Ahmedabad and several other cities of Gujarat between 6.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. on Sunday, he added.

A day before, the distraught family had expressed suspicions of foul play behind the extreme measure taken by Solanki – who hailed from a Dalit family – shocking the educational circles all over the country.

The police had earlier recorded the family’s initial statements and are now questioning other students and hostelites on various aspects, including allegations of caste discrimination, which the IIT-B management has officially denied.

A student body on the campus, Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle-IITB, had issued a detailed statement last Monday pointing at alleged caste discrimination, which the IIT-B has rejected outright.

Meanwhile, Dalit leader and Congress MLA from Vadgam, Jignesh Mevani, on Thursday demanded an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the death of Solanki.

Mevani told the media in Ahmedabad that the tragic incident involved a Dalit student who got into IIT Bombay after clearing the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) with flying colours.

The Maharashtra government should set up an SIT to probe the incident because the family suspects foul play, Mevani said. The Dalit leader also demanded that the government should pay Rs 50 lakh compensation to the deceased student’s family.

Solanki’s father, Ramesh Solanki, has alleged that his son was harassed by the other students because “we are Dalits”.

“When he visited us during Makar Sankranti, he had complained to his aunt that the other students were harassing him, taunting him that ‘because you are a Dalit, you got an opportunity to study free of cost’,” Ramesh Solanki said.

In a related development, the students of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalay in Wardha have sent a memorandum to President Draupadi Murmu urging the Centre to enact a ‘Rohith Vemula Act’ to safeguard students from marginalised communities in nationally important institutions of higher learning and end the suicides that are being reported from there, citing the two cases – one each at IIT-B and IIT-Madras this week – and an attempted suicide case in IIT-Madras.

  • D.C. police lieutenant delivered pre-Jan. 6 tips from Tarrio to Capitol Police, Proud Boy’s lawyer says

D.C. police lieutenant delivered pre-Jan. 6 tips from Tarrio to Capitol Police, Proud Boy’s lawyer says

    [ad_1]

The messages were the latest twist in the trial on charges that Tarrio and four other Proud Boys leaders conspired to violently prevent the transfer of power from then-President Donald Trump to Joe Biden, who won the 2020 election. Tarrio, because of his arrest, was not in Washington during the riot, but he remained in contact with other leaders, who marched on the Capitol and were present at some of the most significant breaches as the mob approached the building.

Prosecutors say the Proud Boys played a leading role in pushing the crowd toward weak points in the Capitol’s defenses and that their own “hand-selected” allies were responsible for breaching police lines — and ultimately the building itself — at multiple points.

The details of Tarrio’s relationship with Lamond had largely remained shrouded in mystery until Wednesday, when prosecutors unveiled dozens of messages between the two.

Over several months, including the crucial weeks before the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Lamond appeared to provide Tarrio with inside tips about investigations pertaining to the far-right group.

Lamond, who defense attorneys have lamented is unable to testify in Tarrio’s defense because of the threat of potential prosecution he faces, repeatedly sent messages on encrypted platforms to Tarrio in the weeks before Jan. 6, even tipping off Tarrio to his impending arrest for burning a Black Lives Matter flag at a pro-Trump rally in Washington in December 2020.

Prosecutors emphasized that this wasn’t a typical relationship between an investigator and an informant or cooperating source. Typically, it was Lamond who appeared to volunteer sensitive information about investigations connected to Tarrio, even when Lamond had learned that information from other agencies, like the FBI or Secret Service.

And Tarrio, in turn, shared that information with Proud Boys allies, informing the group on Jan. 4, 2021, that the warrant for his arrest “was just signed.” He would be arrested the next day when he arrived in Washington ahead of Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally, which would later morph into a riot that led to the storming of the U.S. Capitol.

“That info stays here,” Tarrio told allies in one private chat.

The relationship between Tarrio and Lamond has been an enigma. Defense attorneys have pointed to it as proof of Tarrio’s close relationship with law enforcement and his willingness to give police departments a heads-up about Proud Boys activities.

During his own testimony to the Jan. 6 select committee, Tarrio alluded to his contacts with the police, indicating that he coordinated his group’s movements in December 2020, during a large pro-Trump rally.

“I coordinated with Metropolitan Police Department to keep my guys away — on these marches, to keep them away from counter-protesters completely,” Tarrio said. “I would say, ‘Hey, I want to march to the monument,’ and they’d tell me, ‘Hey, there’s counter-protesters between where you are and the monument is.’ And I’d be like, ‘Okay, I’m not going to march 4 over there. We’ll march in the opposite direction.’”

But he didn’t specifically identify Lamond. In their own Jan. 6 committee interviews, Donohue and his deputy, Julie Farnam, described coordinating with Lamond — a top intelligence official with the D.C. police — about potential threats. Neither Donohue nor Farnam, referenced getting Proud Boys-related tips or any information derived from Tarrio.

Robert Glover, commander of the Metropolitan Police Department on Jan. 6, told the House select committee that the Proud Boys had had interactions with the department throughout 2020 and “always want to make it look like they’re law enforcement’s friends.” Robert Contee III, chief of the D.C. police, told the committee that Tarrio had been on the department leaders’ radar ahead of Jan. 6, including in a security briefing with Mayor Muriel Bowser a week before the riot.

“I forget the date that the warrant was actually signed for his arrest,” Contee told the committee, describing a Dec. 30, 2020, briefing with the mayor. “But that was kind of lingering out there, MPD world, something that we were following up on.”

The Jan. 6 select committee also indicated that Lamond forwarded other intelligence to the Capitol Police, including a tip from a “civilian” who lives near Washington who warned of stumbling upon a pro-Trump website that featured “detailed plans to storm Federal buildings, dress incognito, and commit crimes against public officials.”

Prosecutors repeatedly suggested Lamond’s contacts with Tarrio appeared to be a one-way street, with Lamond repeatedly providing sensitive nonpublic information to Tarrio, which he’d characterize as a “heads up.” For example, Lamond appeared to give Tarrio advance notice that an arrest warrant for Tarrio was imminent.

The department’s criminal division “had me ID you from a photo you posted on Parler,” Lamond indicated on Dec. 25, 2020. “They may be submitting an arrest warrant to U.S. attorney’s office.”

To emphasize that point, prosecutors elicited testimony from FBI Agent Peter Dubrowski, one of the agents handling the post-Jan. 6 investigation of Proud Boys leaders, describing how unusual it is for law enforcement officials to share investigative information with someone who may be the subject or target of a probe.

“I see no benefit [to law enforcement],” Dubrowski said on the witness stand in response to questions from Assistant U.S. Attorney Conor Mulroe.

With the jury out of the room, Tarrio’s attorney, Sabino Jauregui, indicated that many of Lamond’s private communications would also show that he made use of information Tarrio provided him to inform superiors — and even other police agencies like the Capitol Police — about the group’s plans and activities.

“We have example after example,” Jauregui said, noting that Lamond would often tell superiors that “my contact” — Tarrio — had informed him about the timing and locations of Proud Boys activities. He said Tarrio even told Lamond about when he would be arriving in D.C. to help facilitate his planned arrest. Some of Tarrio’s information was directed from Lamond to Donohue in the weeks before Jan. 6, Jauregui said.

The trial featured some of the first discussion, with jurors present, of confidential human sources that the FBI relied on to investigate the Proud Boys. Prosecutors suggested that defense counsel had confused the matter by equating those sources — members of the public who voluntarily share information with law enforcement — with undercover FBI agents.

Dubrowski said there were no undercover FBI agents monitoring the chats of the Proud Boys. However, prosecutors emphasized that there were sources within the group who grew alarmed and provided information to law enforcement.

Twenty tourist police stations launched in Andhra Pradesh

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: In a move aimed at ensuring safety of tourists, the Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday launched 20 tourist police stations.

Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy inaugurated the police stations at 20 important religious and tourist places in various districts.

Launching the police stations virtually from his official residence here, he said the security kiosks would work as additional police stations and attend to complaints from tourists.

The newly launched tourist police stations would now start functioning at the RK Beach at Visakhapatnam, Sri Kodanda Rama Swamy temple at Vontimitta in YSR district, Kukkuteswara Swamy temple at Pithapuram in Kakinada district, Pushkar Ghat at Rajahmundry, Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple at Dwaraka Tirumala in Eluru district, Manginapudi Beach and Mopidevi Temple in Krishna district, Indrakeeladri Temple and Bhavani Island in NTR district, Mypadu Beach and Sri Penusila Lakshmi Narasimha Swami temple at Penchalakona in SPSR Nellore district, Mahanandi and Ahobilam temples in Nandyal district, Raghavendra Swamy temple at Mantralayam in Kurnool district, Horsley Hills in Annamayya district and Lepakshi temple in Satya Sai district.

The chief minister revealed that the tourist police stations would be run by specially trained police personnel and headed by a Sub-Inspector or Assistant Sub-Inspector rank officer. Linked with local police stations, each tourist police station would have six police personnel including women constables.

Interacting with the police officials virtually on the occasion, he suggested that the contact phone number of the responsible police officials should be prominently displayed at all tourist police Stations. He hoped that the enhanced tourism security would help boost up the traffic of tourists in the state.

He said several reforms were introduced in the police department after YSRCP came to power and the downloading of Disha App by about 1.20 crore women indicates the extent of support being extended to womenfolk in the state by the police.

Unlike in the TDP rule, police services are now available to people through village and ward secretariats and the government has also introduced zero-FIR system in police stations where receptionists would talk to the complainants first.

Home Minister Taneti Vanita, DGP K.V. Rajendranath Reddy, Special CS (Tourism) Rajat Bhargava and senior police officials were present.

  • Hyderabad police arrest drug peddlers, find big Mumbai networks

Hyderabad police arrest drug peddlers, find big Mumbai networks

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Three interstate gangs that were supplying Ganja or marijuana and peddling other drugs were arrested by the city police in a major bust. The cops seized 204 grams of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), 110 kgs of Marijuana, a few cell phones, cash and cars, all worth Rs 60 lakhs. The cops managed to get a big lead on the drug supply to the state by tracking down a drug consumer from the city’s HITEC City area.

City police commissioner CV Anand said that the cops investigated and found one Sana Khan, a resident of Kondapur, who is an IT employee. She reportedly used to consume and sell MDMA in Hyderabad, and the user is what helped the police track the drug network in Hyderabad.

“She used to travel to Mumbai frequently in the last two to three years, and bought drugs from a supplier in Mumbai named Jathin Balachandra Balerao. She bought 1 gram of MDMA for about 3 thousand rupees in Mumbai and sold it for about 7 thousand in Hyderabad,” said Anand during a press conference on Tuesday. The police investigated Sana Khan and found 40 to 50 consumers in Hyderabad and 70 consumers in Mumbai.

According to Anand, Jathin procures Cocaine from one Emmanuel Osondu, a Nigerian who was arrested by the Bahadurpura police station earlier. H-NEW and Gopalapuram police officials seized 204 grams of MDMA, 4 smartphones, a Toyota corolla car and things worth Rs 20 lakhs in that case.

The Hyderabad police commissioner also said information regarding the drug racket obtained during investigations has been shared with the Mumbai Police.

“We have investigated for about 2 months and caught 3 modules, this is just the tip of the iceberg but we have discovered crucial information regarding the Narcotics situation in Hyderabad during our investigation. There is an increase in the flow of narcotics from Mumbai and we will conduct joint operations with the Mumbai Police to prevent the supply of drugs to Hyderabad and Telangana,” said commissioner Anand.

110 Kgs Ganja seized in separate case

In a case of organised procurement, possession and interstate transportation of ganja from Araku in Andhra Pradesh to Mumbai, the Hyderabad police also intercepted an Innova vehicle and seized about 110 Kgs Ganja, Rs 1.5 lakh cash, 4 cell phones all worth 36 lakhs.

One Bilkis Suleiman Sheik and her husband Ali Asghar, residents of Mumbai, contacted Murtuza Shaikh, a Zaheerabad resident and ganja seller. Murtuza led them to one Srinivas, a ganja cultivator in Araku. The couple then sent some other persons to purchase dry ganja of about 110 Kg from the cultivator.

As soon as they reached Hyderabad, Murtuza Shaikh decided to take 20 KG of dry Ganja to Zaheerabad on an RTC bus from Mahatma Gandhi Bus Stand (MGBS). Acting on tipoff, the Commissioner’s Task Force’s east zone team along with the Afzalgunj police station proceeded to MGBS and apprehended Murtuza.

Anand also said that Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) and the Charminar police caught one Mehraj Kazi, a resident of Andheri West, Mumbai, and seized 40 grams MDMA, a phone and other things worth Rs 4 lakhs, in one of the drug busts. “All three cases had connections to Mumbai and there is an increase in the supply of narcotics from Mumbai to Telangana,” he added

Speaking about H-NEW, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), G Chakravarthy, said that 104 narcotics related cases were registered, and that 212 peddlers were arrested. In total, the Hyderabad police seized 12 types of drugs worth Rs 6.3 crores. 1,076 consumers were caught by the cops.
