New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central government of threatening the fourth pillar of democracy by raiding the BBC.

Lashing out at the government over its actions, AAP leader Atishi said: “The BJP wants to suppress every word spoken or shown against the government. The Income Tax Raid on the BBC is an attack on the democracy of India. Media is the most important pillar of democracy, today the BJP Central government is trying to break the fourth pillar of democracy.”

Addressing the media, she said that this is a message to the entire media fraternity that if they show anything against the BJP and the PM, they will meet the same fate. Raising questions about the Centre’s intentions behind the action, she said: “BJP banned the documentary made by BBC to prevent the country from seeing these allegations unfold. India is at number 150 out of 180 countries in the Global Index of Press Freedom, today the whole world is questioning India’s democratic status.”

“Why has the BBC been raided? Because today, not only India but the entire world is discussing the BBC documentary. First of all, the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Central government got that documentary banned and removed from websites and social media so that no one in India is able to watch it. This was the first act of censorship by the BJP-ruled central government after the BBC’s documentary on Narendra Modi.”

And with today’s income tax raid, she alleged, that the BJP-led central government “is threatening all of us and asserting that no one, not even a globally famous organisation like the BBC can say, write, or show anything that is critical of their administration”.

Atishi asked the BJP to explain what image of India does it want to present to the whole world.

“History is witness that you can suppress the voice of the people for some time but you cannot suppress the voice of every person forever,” she said, appealing to the BJP to not intimidate the media like this, and stop tarnishing India’s image in front of the world.

Bengaluru: The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday ordered issuing of notices to Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and others in a public interest litigation taken on its own over the death of two persons due to the collapse of an under-construction metro pillar here.

The BMRCL was given two weeks’ time to respond to the court.

The state government, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the BMRCL chief engineer and Nagarjuna Construction Company Limited are the other respondents in the case.

The High Court had initiated the suo-moto (on its own) PIL on January 13 following the death of software engineer Tejaswini and her two-year-old son when the pillar pier collapsed on the two-wheeler they were travelling in, near Hennur main road in the city on January 10.

The division bench of Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice S Vishwajith Shetty heard the petition that the court had itself directed the Registrar General to initiate.

While initiating the PIL earlier this month, the High Court had said it was taking cognisance of news reports about the incident. “These news items prompted us to take cognisance of the incident referred to wherein there is an unfortunate death of a lady and toddler son at the condition of roads, the issue raises concern and question for the public at large.”

Meanwhile, the BMRCL had suspended three engineers and issued notices to its contractor Nagarjuna Construction Company. The police had booked nine persons including officials of BMRCL.

The Govindapura police had served notice to Anjum Parvez regarding the case. He appeared before the DCP (East) Bhimashankar Guled and attended the inquiry.

“I attended the inquiry as I was summoned by the police. A report has been sought by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) regarding the incident and precautions that need to be taken in future to prevent such incidents,” said Parvez.

“The reports have to be submitted. The engineers are being trained to take up security measures. Action will be initiated against the construction company as per the contract agreement,” he said, adding: “We will see to it that in future such incidents don’t take place.”

Following the incident, the “negligence” of BMRCL” was criticised by the deceased’s family as well as the general public.

The victim’s family had lodged a complaint in this regard against the contractor and the Nagarjuna Construction Company.
