Andhra police invokes SC-ST Act against hotel for serving food on plates with Ambedkar’s picture: NCSC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh Police has invoked the SC-ST Act against a hotel that served food on paper plates with the pictures of B R Ambedkar on those, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) said on Tuesday.

The NCSC received a complaint on July 8 last year through Twitter, alleging that food was served on paper plates with the picture of Ambedkar in a hotel in Konaseema district.

When a protest was staged against this by the members of Scheduled Caste (SC) communities, the hotel owner got an FIR lodged against 18 men.

The police arrested the 18 SC men and sent them to jail. Police investigated under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and after finding the allegations against the hotel owner and the paper plate seller to be true, they were arrested.

NCSC Chairman Vijay Sampla said during a hearing, police informed the commission that the SC-ST Act and section 295A of the IPC have been added in the matter in accordance with the commission’s instructions.

The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 was enacted by Parliament to prevent atrocities and hate crimes against the members of the SC and ST communities. The Act is popularly known as the SC/ST Act, PoA or simply, the “Atrocities Act”.

The FIR against the 18 SC men was also cancelled at the hearing, Sampla said.

Row over deity picture on UP DM’s son’s birthday cake

    [ad_1]

Kanpur: Kanpur Dehat district magistrate Neha Jain is in the midst of another controversy — this time for her son’s birthday cake.

According to reports, Jain’s son’s birthday cake had a picture of a deity and a trident.

The pictures of the cake in question — which was cut during the birthday celebration on April 1 — have gone viral on social media platforms over the last two days, with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal staging a protest for ‘hurting religious sentiments’.

    MS Education Academy

The district magistrate has issued a statement saying that the image on the cake was of a super hero from the film ‘Brahmastra’ who embodies the victory of good over evil.

“Its use was not intended to hurt anyone’s sentiment but if someone felt that way, I extend an apology,” she added.

However, the statement did not have the desired impact as the controversy continues to gather steam.

VHP Gauraksha chief Aditya Shukla and state government employees’ joint council’s district convener Amit Pandey have alleged that the district magistrate called them to her residence to talk about the incident and then their mobiles phones were forcibly taken away.

The two leaders added that they were made to sit for seven hours and their mobile phones were returned the following day.

Reacting to the episode, VHP Gauraksha chief said that it was an insult to our culture and heritage.

Meanwhile, Amit Pandey said that he has submitted a complaint to Superintendent of Polic Kanpur Dehat about the incident.

On the other hand, the district magistrate has said that sharing photos of her personal life is a breach of privacy.

“I have written to the Kanpur Dehat SP requesting an investigation into how the pictures were leaked. A probe should reveal who were the people behind it,” she said.

Kanpur Dehat SP B.B.T.G.S. Murthy said that the police are looking into both the complaints.

It may be recalled that the district magistrate had landed in controversy when two women died during an anti-encroachment drive in February and a video clip of Jain dancing at a function went viral at the same time.

  • Oscars 2023: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ picks 7 titles including Best Picture, check out full list

Oscars 2023: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ picks 7 titles including Best Picture, check out full list

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ was named best picture at the 95th Academy Awards, capping off an improbable awards season run by winning the movie business’s highest honour.

The film, an adventure about a Chinese-American laundromat owner grappling with an IRS audit and inter-dimensional attackers, earned seven statues, including original screenplay and directing honours for its creators Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as the Daniels), reports ‘Variety’.

The victory is a big one for A24, the indie studio that pushed the zany film to an impressive $100 million at the box office, a stunning achievement at a time when the market for arthouse movies has shrivelled.

The studio also managed the rare feat of nabbing all four acting honours — three of which were won by ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and one by ‘The Whale’.

It was a night of comebacks and reassessments. Michelle Yeoh of ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ became only the second woman of colour to be recognized as best actress. The honour came after a long career in martial arts and action movies like ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’ and ‘Yes, Madam’.

“Ladies, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you are past your prime,” Yeoh said. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility.”

Meanwhile, Brendan Fraser took best actor honors for his performance as a morbidly obese man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter in ‘The Whale’.

Fraser, once an A-list star known for his work in popcorn flicks such as ‘George of the Jungle’ and ‘The Mummy’, had spent the last decade changing away from the spotlight dealing with health and personal struggles. His win continues his remarkable resurgence.

“I started in this business 30 years ago, and this – they certainly didn’t come easily to me, but there was a facility that I didn’t appreciate at the time until it stopped,” Fraser said, acknowledging his career setbacks. He thanked his director Darren Aronofsky for “throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard”.

    Here are the winners:

    • Best Picture – ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’
    • Best Lead Actress – Michelle Yeoh for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’
    • Best Lead Actor – Brendan Fraser for ‘The Whale’
    • Best Director – Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’

  • NCPCR seeks action against Atishi for posting ‘picture of minor’ on Twitter

NCPCR seeks action against Atishi for posting ‘picture of minor’ on Twitter

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written to Delhi Chief Secretary and Delhi Police Commissioner to investigate and take necessary action against AAP leader Atishi for using children and for posting a ‘picture of minor’ on Twitter in furtherance of a political agenda.

“The Commission is in receipt of a complaint wherein it has been informed that Atishi Singh has uploaded images on her Twitter handle wherein minor children are seen holding posters of (former Deputy Chief Minister) Manish Sisodia in schools. It is alleged that the said images are uploaded by Atishi Singh in order to divert attention in the ongoing/pending investigation by the CBI against Manish Sisodia in Delhi Liquor Policy Case…,” NCPCR Chairperson Priyank Kanoongo has said in a letter to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar and Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora.

The Commission also observes that the posts uploaded by Atishi Singh showing images of children clearly indicates misuse of the students studying in Delhi schools for personal agenda which may adversely affect the psychosocial behaviour of young children for the glorification of the accused person in liquor scam, the letter reads.

The NCPCR has also underlined that the AAP party workers have installed stalls in and around the school campus and the children are being used for their political campaigning and personal agenda favouring Sisodia, and this seems to be in violation of Sections 75 and 83 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and other relevant provisions of the IPC.

Underlining the “sensitivity of the matter”, the Commission has urged the officials to investigate the matter urgently by lodging an FIR against Atishi for misusing her position and power for her personal agenda by involving children, and posting and using images of minors without their consent.

The NCPCR has asked the agencies to submit the action taken report within 3 days of receipt of its letter.
