International drug cartel busted in Goa, Olympic medallist among 3 held

Mumbai: The Narcotics Control Bureau has busted an international drug cartel in Goa and arrested two Russians – a 1980 Olympic silver medallist woman swimmer and a former policeman – along with an Indian, and seized various drugs including cocaine and charas, an official said on Saturday.

The operation was conducted by the NCB’s Goa unit over the past two weeks, he said.

“Based on a tip-off that a Russian drug cartel was actively operating in Arambol and its adjoining areas in Goa, a probe was launched. As per the intelligence inputs, a Russian woman named S Varganova was found involved in the supply of drugs to foreign nationals. During the investigation, we also received information that led to the identification of a local man named Akash,” the NCB official said.

“During further probe, it was learnt that Akash was part of a larger network and he was working on the directions of a Russian person, who acted as the kingpin of the cartel,” he said.

Immediately after that, Akash was put under discreet surveillance. After extensive intelligence-based operations, a Russian national named Andre was apprehended and 20 LSD blots were seized from him.

Andre revealed that he was growing hydroponic weed at his local residence, the anti-drug agency said.

Thereafter, tree pots of hydroponic weed plants were recovered from his house, the official said.
During the entire operation, different kinds of drugs, including 88 LSD blots, 8.8 grams cocaine, 242.5 grams charas, 1.440 kg hydroponic weed, 16.49 grams hash oil, 410 grams hash cake – were seized along with Rs 4.88 lakh cash, he said, adding that the NCB also recovered Indian and foreign currencies, fake documents, IDs and material required to grow hydroponic weed.

“The arrested Russian woman, S Varganova, is a 1980 Olympic silver medallist in swimming, while Andre is a former policeman from Russia. The latter has been operating a drug cartel in Goa for a long time. He had visited many cities to spread his network and had been managing the well-spread network of street peddlers,” the NCB said.

Along with the Russian nationals, local citizen Akash has also been arrested, the official said, adding that further investigation was on.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said in Panaji the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of Goa Police has been cracking down on the illegal drug trade in the state.

He said various agencies in the state are trying to uproot the illegal drug trade and they are working in coordination.

“In the last four years, main drug paddlers have been arrested by ANC,” Sawant told reporters.

  • Games fakers: Olympic ‘pseudo-volunteers’ plan to disrupt Paris 2024

Games fakers: Olympic ‘pseudo-volunteers’ plan to disrupt Paris 2024

    [ad_1]

An anti-Olympics collective is aiming to disrupt next year’s Paris Games by recruiting fake volunteers. Saccage 2024, which translates as “Destruction 2024”, has already generated a buzz on social media with its “pseudo-volunteer” plan, saying they should be paid for their work.

“Volunteering is supposed to be for the common good and that is not the case for the Olympic Games – it does not have charitable aims,” said Saccage 2024 member Arthur, who declined to give his family name.

The 25-year-old, an environmental activist who lives in Saint-Denis, where the bulk of the Games will be organised, plans to withdraw at the last minute or try to disrupt the Games from within if he is selected to be a volunteer. Saccage and other critics of the Paris Olympics say the event will negatively affect the environment and benefit big businesses and elites, rather than locals.

Paris 2024 organisers did not immediately respond to a request for comment but have said in the past that they would organise “popular and spectacular Games” that will bring in millions of visitors.

Olympics organisers are looking to recruit 45,000 volunteers. They have said that volunteering – also widely used in past Games – is an opportunity to participate in the Olympics. The deadline for applications is 3 May. Paris 2024 have said they would take the time to ensure the “sincerity” of candidates and that volunteers would have a background check. Candidates are required to demonstrate their motivation and experience, and there will be interviews for some roles. Volunteers will receive uniforms, free travel and meal vouchers.

The Games are more than a year away and there is no certainty activists will be able to generate the numbers needed to disrupt events. However, the plan reflects a widespread discontent in France, with huge protests over a law increasing the pension age and hashtags linking opposition to the reform and the Olympics.

Saccage could not say how many had signed up as would-be disruptors, but said it saw a rise in interest after President Emmanuel Macron rammed through the pensions law without a final vote in parliament.

Jan, a library worker in his 50s, said he came across the idea on Twitter after France’s Constitutional Council verdict gave its green light to the law. He had been striking and protesting against the pensions law, and said the fake volunteer plan was a “fun and constructive” way to continue the protests and, at the same time, oppose the Games and their impact.

This would not be the first time the Olympic Games have been used by activists to further their causes, said Jules Boykoff, a political scientist at Oregon University. “Money spent on the Olympics is not spent on basic needs such as housing, education, healthcare and pensions. The Games are a high-profile target for activist ire,” he said.

  • Iran’s Olympic skier Atefeh Ahmadi seeks asylum in Germany

Iran’s Olympic skier Atefeh Ahmadi seeks asylum in Germany

    [ad_1]

Iranian figure skating champion Atefeh Ahmadi left her home country and applied for asylum in Germany.

Ahmadi had travelled to Germany to be able to participate in the Courchevel-Meribel 2023 Alpine Ski World Championships that are organized in France starting February 9, 2023.

“I left Iran to achieve my goal, but my heart is with Iran. I love my Iran. I love my people. If I could, I would support the people so that together we can achieve freedom,” Ahmadi said in an interview with London-based broadcaster Iran International on Saturday.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted Abbas Nazarian, head of the Iranian Ski Federation, as saying that her departure “was a personal decision and seems to have been planned for some time.”

22-year-old Atefeh Ahmadi, is the only Iranian skier who has managed to be an Olympian by qualifying for the Beijing 2022 Games.

Atefeh Ahmadi is one of the best female skiers in Asia . She has won five medals at the Asian Winter Games, including a silver at the 2018 Super-G, and has participated in several World Ski Championships.

Iran’s Atefeh Ahmadi learned to ski soon after she could walk, but the road to the Winter Olympics hasn’t been an easy one for the youngster. As she explained to AFP in 2021, she was only three years old when her parents put her on skis for the first time.

Atefeh Ahmadi is not the first female athlete to leave Iran. In early January, chess player Sara Khadem fled to Spain after participating in an international tournament without wearing a headscarf.

In 2020, taekwondo player Kimia Alizadeh, the only Olympic medalist in the history of the sport in Iran, left her country for the Netherlands.

Protests have raged against the Iranian leadership since mid-September, when the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, died at the headquarters of the morality police, who detained her for wearing improper headscarf.

Laws requiring compulsory headscarf have become a flashpoint during the unrest, with a number of female athletes competing abroad without wearing headscarves in public.
