New Delhi: The BSF has arrested a Bangladeshi smuggler in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district and recovered from his possession 40 gold biscuits valued at Rs 2.78 crore, an official said on Sunday.

A Border Security Force (BSF) official said the gold biscuits weighing over 4 kg were being smuggled to India from Bangladesh.

An official said that BSF personnel had received information regarding a truck smuggling gold from Bangladesh to India through the Integrated Check Post, Petrapole, following which the truck was intercepted and searched.

The smuggler, arrested on Saturday, has been identified as Sushankar Das — a resident of Satkhira district of Bangladesh.

During questioning, Das said the truck’s owner had loaded fish at ‘Royce International’ in Satkhira on the vehicle, and hid the gold biscuits which were to be handed over to ‘Baba International’ in Kolkata after reaching India.

The smuggler has been handed over to Customs officials along with the recovered gold biscuits and the truck which has been seized.

Hathras conspiracy: UP STF nabs PFI functionary from Kerala wanted in UAPA case

    [ad_1]

Noida: The Uttar Pradesh police on Friday said it has arrested a “functionary” of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) from Kerala on charges of conspiracy to trigger riots in the wake of the alleged gangrape and death of a Dalit girl in Hathras in 2020.

This is the same case in which journalist Siddique Kappan and three others were arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in Mathura by the UP police in October 2020 while they were on their way to Hathras. Kappan walked out of jail in February this year.

Suspect Kamal KP (aged around 50) was arrested from his residence in Kizhattur, under Melattur police station limits in Malappuram district of Kerala at around 12 pm on Friday, the Special Task Force (STF) of the UP Police said in a statement.

Kamal, who is believed to be handling the “hit-squad” of the movement, was arrested by a joint team of the Noida and the Agra units of the STF.

He is among the top officer bearers of the PFI and has worked as office secretary at its Delhi headquarters too, according to the statement.

“Kamal KP was wanted in connection with a case lodged at the Maat police station in Mathura regarding a well-planned attempt to provoke riots in the wake of the unfortunate incident in Hathras. He is an active member of the banned PFI and carried a reward of Rs 25,000,” the UP STF said.

According to an STF officer, Kamal’s is the ninth arrest in connection with the case lodged under Indian Penal Code sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 295A (deliberate act to outrage religious feelings), 120B (criminal conspiracy), the IT Act and under provisions of the stringent anti-terror UAPA.

Of these nine, two suspects, including Kappan, have been released from jail so far, even as investigation continues into the case over the alleged role of the PFI in planning communal disharmony after the Hathras incident, the officer said.

Dems’ new primary calendar nabs support from Southern DNC members

    election 2024 democrats 89020

“The past few elections have made it abundantly clear that the South is the new Democratic battleground, and by starting the presidential nominating process in South Carolina and incorporating Georgia into the early lineup, our party will only strengthen its commitment to these critical voters,” the statement reads in part. “The road to the White House runs through the South, and this calendar will ensure that the Democratic nominee is fortified for the general election.”

The statement is another sign of Democratic Party leaders smoothing out the path for Biden’s plan ahead of Saturday’s vote. The changes would remove Iowa and its caucuses from their longtime first-place status and challenge New Hampshire’s place as the first primary, though it would still be behind just one other state in South Carolina.

There’s still some pushback from New Hampshire Democrats about their new position in the order — splitting the second place slot with Nevada, ahead of new early states Michigan and Georgia. And a few Democrats, including Bernie Sanders’ former campaign manager Faiz Shakir, have raised concerns about putting South Carolina, a solidly red state, in first place.

In an op-ed, Shakir suggested putting North Carolina first, but North Carolina Democrats did not apply to be a part of the early window and one of North Carolina’s DNC members, John Verdejo, signed on to the statement of support for South Carolina.

  • Pence nabs top Haley staffer

“I am grateful for my time working with Nikki Haley and her dedicated team,” Chapman said in a statement. “Advancing American Freedom is one of the fastest growing and increasingly influential conservative groups in the nation, and I am thrilled to join the incredible team that is building AAF as a leader for common sense conservative policies that will help restore America.”

Betsy Ankney, the executive director of Haley’s political action committee, responded in a statement: “Tim Chapman is terrific and we’re happy he found a great spot to continue to advocate for conservative policy ideas.”

Chapman joined the Haley team in early 2020 to establish and oversee Stand for America, which served as a platform to help the former UN ambassador promote her policy agenda ahead of an anticipated 2024 campaign. He has a long history in conservative politics, having been a co-founder of Heritage Action, a conservative political action group, and as chief of staff of its allied nonprofit Heritage Foundation.

Chapman was also a top aide to former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint when DeMint established the Senate Conservatives Fund, an organization that backed Senate candidates who often ran to the right of more establishment-aligned contenders in key races.

Chapman’s relationship with Pence dates back to the early 2000s, when Chapman was at the Heritage Foundation and Pence was an Indiana congressman, according to a person close to both of them.

What role Chapman would potentially play in a Pence campaign is unclear. In a statement, the former vice president called Chapman “one of the brightest stars in the conservative movement, and we are so thrilled he’s joining the team to advance the cause of American culture, American opportunity, and American leadership.”

The staff poaching represents the latest turn in a long-simmering rivalry between the Pence and Haley camps. During the 2020 campaign, Pence’s advisers blamed Haley for rumors that she would replace Pence on the ticket. In a forthcoming memoir, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asserts that Haley was privately jockeying to push out Pence, though Haley has insisted the claims are “lies and gossip.”

Further complicating the dynamic between Pence and Haley is the long-term overlap between key parts of their teams. Nick Ayers, a Georgia-based political operative, served for a time as Pence’s White House chief of staff and has also advised Haley. Jon Lerner, a longtime Republican pollster, served as an adviser to both Haley and Pence during the Trump administration. Lerner has also been working for Haley as she prepares for the presidential race.

Now, the two appear to be on a collision course. Pence has been on a media tour promoting his newly released memoir, “So Help Me God,” and he has begun building out his political operation.

Haley, meanwhile, teased a potential campaign theme during a Thursday appearance on Fox News. “I think we need a young generation to come in, step up and really start fixing things,” she said. “Can I be that leader? Yes, I think I can be that leader.”
