  • Bonfire of EU laws watered down to just 800 after meeting of Brexiter MPs

Bonfire of EU laws watered down to just 800 after meeting of Brexiter MPs

    [ad_1]

The government is to ditch plans to scrap up to 4,000 EU laws by the end of the year after a private meeting with Brexiter MPs.

It now aims to remove 800 statutes and regulations, instead of 3,700 laws it had lined up for a “bonfire” of EU law in December, threatening everything from passenger rights and compensation for cancelled flights, to equality employment law and environmental standards and protections.

The plan emerged after the trade secretary, Kemi Badenoch, briefed Eurosceptic MPs in the European Research Group at a meeting on Monday.

Sources have confirmed the plan discussed at that meeting to slash the number of laws targeted by the bill, which is expected to return to the House of Lords on 15 May.

However, one of the bill’s staunchest critics, Stella Creasy, the Walthamstow MP and chair of the Labour party movement for Europe, said a smouldering bonfire did nothing to address the sweeping powers the bill was giving ministers to change laws without due scrutiny.

“All those wanting to defend parliamentary sovereignty should be wary of the government using the promise not to delete vital rights now as a Trojan horse to get this legislation through parliament and then use the powers in it to destroy legislation later,” she said.

“The retained EU law bill in its current form still seeks to use Brexit as an excuse for a ministerial power grab, which is why we will continue to work with colleagues across the house and campaigners in all quarters to protect the role MPs play in making laws from an overbearing and often unaccountable executive.”

Any climbdown on the legislation tabled by Jacob Rees-Mogg as a “Brexit freedoms” bill risked angering hardline Tory Brexiters but the depth of opposition to it from business, environmental groups, unions and Brussels has left ministers with no option but to consider a full-scale delay or a scaled-down version.

A government spokesperson said: “We remain committed to ensuring the retained EU law (REUL) bill receives royal assent and that the supremacy of EU law ends with unnecessary and burdensome EU laws removed by the end of this year.

“Once passed, the bill will enable the country to further seize the opportunities of Brexit by ensuring regulations fit the needs of the UK, helping to grow our economy and drive innovation.”

Among the 800 laws on the “to save list” are the working time directive, which protects working hours and environmental legislation.

Under the bill, laws that were not actively saved or updated would automatically face the axe on 31 December under a controversial deadline known as a “sunset clause”.

William Bain, the head of trade policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, urged the government to scrap the clause, given the BCC’s view that businesses are just starting to regain confidence after years of battering by the pandemic, energy prices and inflation. “Now is not the time to knock that with a hasty sunset clause across vast areas of UK regulation,” he said.

Badenoch’s plan reportedly went down “like a lead balloon” at the meeting with the ERG, but sources said she told the MPs that it was the practical solution to getting the controversial bill through this year.

Last month, the Observer revealed that the government had begun a full-scale retreat over the bill, which had been criticised not only for its attempt to sweep thousands of laws off the statute books but the “unprecedented” powers it gave ministers to update, reform or axe laws without the usual parliamentary scrutiny.

Legal experts labelled it “undemocratic” and an “invitation to litigation”, while environmental groups and trade unions launched high-profile campaigns to stop the bill, first tabled by Rees-Mogg as a Brexit freedom bill.

Efforts to kill off the bill were further fuelled when it emerged there was little capacity in the civil service to scrutinise each law and draft updates or recommendations by the deadline of December.

Badenoch reportedly told MPs that civil servants had told her that the timeframe was unviable, with the majority of the EU law transferred over to domestic statute books in environment and agriculture sectors, where the government faced high-profile concerted campaigns against their plan.

The list of laws targeted by the government includes bans on animal testing for cosmetics, passenger compensation rights for those whose flights are delayed, equal pay for men and women, and pension rights for widows of same-sex marriages.

It recently emerged that 25 groups concerned about safety standards, including the TUC and the British Safety Council and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, had said the government’s timetable created dangerous uncertainty.

The government approach was further undermined when it emerged that it did not have a handle on the number of laws that would be affected by the bill.

Its “dashboard” initially listed 2,000 laws, but in the past month it had added another 1,700 after research at the National Archive, fuelling fears that some critical legislation could fall through the cracks and be deleted from the statute books.

Hyderabad: Society for Earth Justice, a charitable organisation will be holding a round table meeting on the rejuvenation of the Musi River at the Soyab Hall, Sundarayya Vignana Kendram (SVK) in Bagh Lingampally.

Musi, a tributary of Krishna River that flows in Hyderabad and surrounding areas is polluted by sewage and industrial waste containing toxic and hazardous materials such as heavy metals, phenols, and pesticides.

This pollution is affecting crops, livestock, and dairy products, as well as causing skin problems, eye problems, and vomiting in certain seasons.

Research highlights the severity of the issue, and its impact on the environment and public health, hence making it crucial to take action to prevent further pollution and protect the river and its surrounding areas.

Members of the Society for Earth Justice organisation are planning to march to spread awareness on the issue, raising slogans such as, “Clean waters from musi for agriculture, clean drinking water, clean air, clean land, clean lush green lung space’ is a right to live. Let us achieve it.”

The organisation has invited citizens to participate in the meeting that will begin at 1 pm to address the critical issue of uptaking the cleanup drive for Musi River water.

  • Climate protesters disrupt BP’s shareholder meeting in London

Climate protesters disrupt BP’s shareholder meeting in London

    [ad_1]

Climate protesters have disrupted BP’s annual general meeting where the oil company faced a backlash from some shareholders over its decision to water down its climate commitments.

At least four demonstrators were forcibly removed from inside the shareholder meeting within 10 minutes of BP chair, Helge Lund, beginning his opening remarks.

The protesters, organised by the campaign group Fossil Free London, repeatedly interrupted Lund’s address by calling for the company to take responsibility for its role in the climate crisis.

Lund also faced growing dissent from BP investors angered by the company’s decision to weaken its climate policies, with almost 10% of shareholders voting against his re-election as chair. That compares with just 3% who voted against him last year.

“You need to be taking action right now, today,” said one female protester. “It’s not enough. It’s just not good enough. People are dying because of your operations now. Step up and take responsibility. Stop your drilling. Stop your lies.”

The campaigners were warned by BP’s company secretary, Ben Mathews, to wait until the question and answer segment of the meeting, or risk being removed by security. The protesters were carried out – one still remaining in a chair – to a smattering of applause from some shareholders.

“This is an emergency,” one woman shouted as she was removed. Another protester, dressed in a smart suit and tie with neatly combed grey hair, was carried out on his back by four security guards.

Joanna Warrington, a spokesperson for Fossil Free London, said: “BP needs to stop drilling and pay up for the damage they’re doing globally. Big oil is making record-breaking billions off the back of people’s excruciating energy bills. Meanwhile, the oil and gas they sell fuels extreme weather and climate collapse.”

The group said 25 protesters attempted to enter the central London meeting, which was only open to BP investors, after buying individual shares in the company. Many were barred from entering after being found with banners.

The meeting was marked by a heavy security presence, including metal detectors and security searches, as the company prepared to face growing criticism of its plans to backtrack on its green pledges.

BP was also challenged over its record on gas “flaring” in southern Iraq. The avoidable burning off of gas released from oilwells results in large plumes of fire and has led to dangerous levels of air pollution in the area.

The father of Ali Hussein Jaloud, who died days before the meeting from a form of leukaemia that has been linked to chemicals released by flaring gas, asked BP why it could not use its profits to help save his son’s life.

Its chief executive, Bernard Looney, expressed his condolences. He said the field was operated by Rumaila Operating Organisation and BP was part of a group of partners that were “making progress” on reducing the flaring and black smoke.

    skip past newsletter promotion

BP won cautious praise from climate campaigners in 2020 after setting out a “net zero carbon” plan that included a goal to cut the company’s oil and gas production by 40%, compared with 2019, by the end of the decade. But it reset the target to 25% by 2030 after reporting the highest profits in its 114-year history thanks to soaring oil and gas prices linked to the Ukraine war.

At least four large UK pension funds – the National Employment Savings Trust (Nest), which represents about 11m individual workplace pensions, the Universities Superannuation Scheme and the Border to Coast Pensions Partnership – voted against the re-election of Lund in protest against the strategy change.

The funds also voted in favour of a resolution put forward by climate campaigners at the shareholder group Follow This, which called for BP to align its emissions reduction plans with the 2015 Paris agreement. In total, 16.75% of BP shareholders backed the resolution. This was higher than last year when 14.9% backed the resolution, but it fell short of the 20.6% garnered in 2021.

Mark Van Baal, the founder of Follow This, addressed BP’s executives at the meeting, saying: “Science and responsible investors are clear: to achieve the goal of Paris to limit global warming to 1.5C, the world must almost halve emissions by 2030. BP has many aims, but none of these covers BP’s total emissions by 2030 in absolute terms.”

He added: “Promises for 2050 are empty without meaningful interim targets. Therefore, BP’s overall aims are not Paris-aligned yet.”

SCO Defence Ministers Meeting: Rajnath likely to hold talks with Chinese counterpart

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India, as the Chair of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in 2023, will host the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting here on April 28, the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to hold bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Gen Li Shangfu. Before the SCO meet, the 18th round of India-China Corps Commander level talks held on Sunday, but it failed to make headway on the contentious issue of the Depsang Plains and de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

The repeated attempts by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to violate the LAC, leading to tension in Ladakh, spurred the institution of the Corps Commander-level meetings.

    MS Education Academy

While the two sides agreed on mutual withdrawals from Pangong Tso, Gogra, and Hot Springs, the Depsang Plains and Demchok remain points of contention and tension.

Now all eyes are now on the visit of the Chinese Defence Minister.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), established in 2001, comprises Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan besides India. Apart from the member states, two observer countries – Belarus and Iran – will also be participating in the SCO Defence Ministers Meeting.

The Defence Ministers will discuss amongst other issues matters concerning regional peace and security, counter terrorism efforts within SCO and an effective multilateralism.

According to the Defence Ministry officials, the theme of India’s Chairmanship of SCO in 2023 is ‘SECURE-SCO’. India attaches special importance to SCO in promoting multilateral, political, security, economic and people-to-people interactions in the region. The ongoing engagement with SCO has helped India promote its relations with the countries in the region with which India has shared civilisational linkages, and is considered India’s extended neighbourhood.

SCO pursues its policy based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, non-interference in internal affairs, equality of all member states and mutual understanding and respect for opinions of each of them.

Rajnath Singh is likely to hold bilateral meetings with other Defence Ministers of participating countries on the sidelines of the meet, the officials added.

BJP leaders ‘frustrated’ after Nitish-Mamata meeting: Lalan Singh

    [ad_1]

Patna: JD-U national President Lalan Singh on Monday said that the BJP leaders are frustrated after the meeting of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee and are thus making all sorts of derogatory comments.

“Nitish Kumar is making efforts to unite opposition parties of the country and succeeding in it. Hence, the BJP is in big desperation and frustration. Hence, its leaders are saying anything. Their unparliamentary languages are an indication of the frustration,” he said.

His statement came after BJP state President Samrat Chaudhary’s derogatory remarks of “Mitti Me Mila Doonga” and “political bridegroom” for Nitish Kumar.

    MS Education Academy

Nitish Kumar met Banerjee in Kolkata on Monday, along with Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav. After the meeting, Nitish Kumar said that the discussion on opposition unity with Banerjee took place in a very good manner.

Banerjee also said that she is glad that Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav came to Kolkata for the opposition unity. She further said that the JP movement was started from Bihar and she advocated for a meeting of all parties in Bihar followed by the plan of action and manifesto.

“We want to give a message that everyone is united. I have already told you that I have no objection to it. I wish to make the BJP zero. It has become a big hero without any work, in support of the media, making the narratives, false claims and goondaism. Nitish ji is talking to every leader of the opposition parties and I will also talk to them. There is no personal ego for me. We collectively want to work together. This is the message from me,” she said.

After Kolkata, Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav went to Lucknow to meet Samajwadi Party chief and Uttar Pradesh’s former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for opposition unity.

Amit Shah to address public meeting in Telangana on Sunday

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be addressing a public rally at Chevella near here on April 23, BJP sources said on Saturday.

His visit is part of ‘Parliament Prabhas Yojana’ programme, they said.

Shah is likely to meet some of the key members of blockbuster ‘RRR’ movie team during his visit. The BJP leader is expected to felicitate the film crew for winning the coveted Oscar award.

    MS Education Academy

The ‘Naatu Naatu’ song of ‘RRR’ won the Academy Award in the Best Original Song category at this year’s event.

A senior party leader said Shah always tries to meet with celebrities wherever he goes and as part of that the minister met actors Junior NTR and Nithin, among others during his earlier visits last year.

BJP sources said the saffron party will work with increased focus in Telangana and step up its campaign once the Assembly polls are over in neighbouring Karnataka on May 10.

The political one-upmanship between the ruling BRS and BJP has reached new heights during recent times with the war of words between the two parties becoming almost a daily affair.

The BJP has been making efforts to emerge as the alternative to BRS and the national party has had reasonable success in a couple of Assembly bypolls and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election during the last three years.

Political leaders meet people from corporate sector: Raut on Pawar-Adani meeting

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Friday played down NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s meeting with industrialist Gautam Adani, saying that political leaders do meet people from the corporate sector.

The Adani Group chairman met the Nationalist Congress Party chief a day before.

“Sharad Pawar or for that matter every big political leader meets people from the corporate sector,” Raut said in response to a question by reporters here.

    MS Education Academy

The meeting assumed some significance as earlier this month Pawar had said the Supreme Court-appointed panel will be more useful than a Joint Parliamentary Commitee for looking into US-based Hindenburg Research’s allegations against the Adani group.

The NCP chief, thus, appeared to be breaking ranks with opposition leaders who have been demanding a JPC on the Adani issue.

Later Pawar said he will not oppose the demand for a JPC.

Raut, incidentally, also met Pawar after the latter’s meeting with Adani.

“We keep meeting, and Pawar is a key leader of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (the alliance of Sena (UBT), NCP and Congress). What is surprising if we or Congress leaders meet Pawar. We had a discussion on many issues in the country and state,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.
