Instagram bio can now include up to five links

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Meta-owned Instagram has announced a new feature, which will allow users to add up to five links to their profile bios.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday announced the new feature in a post on his Instagram channel, saying, “the feature has been a top request among creators”, reports The Verge.

With the new feature, users can now add links by editing their profile in the mobile app, where they can give them titles and reorder how they’ll appear.

However, if a user adds more than one link to their profile, visitors will need to click through a message that says “(Your first link) and 1 other” to view the complete list of links, according to the report.

This means that if a user has more than one link to display on their Instagram profile or already utilises a ‘Link in bio’ service like Linktree, folks will have to click an extra time to see their links.

Meanwhile, Instagram has announced new features on its short-video making app to empower creators.

The social network has added a dedicated destination for trending audio and hashtags, two new metrics to Reels insights and brought gifts on Reels to more countries.

Creators will now be able to see what the top trending topics and hashtags are on Reels.

  • U.S. officials have examined whether alleged doc leaker had foreign links

U.S. officials have examined whether alleged doc leaker had foreign links

    [ad_1]

    leaked documents 47308

“We still don’t know who this guy was talking to outside of the Discord server and if he had any other intention for leaking the documents beyond wanting to impress friends,” said a fourth person — a former U.S. intelligence official.

It’s standard practice for investigators to examine a suspect’s potential ties to foreign governments and entities, especially in leak cases, said Mick Mulroy, a former top Pentagon official and retired CIA officer. Defense Department and CIA employees are required to disclose any “close and continuous” contact with foreigners, he noted.

If they find any foreign links it would mean the leak is likely even more damaging than believed. It could signify that it was orchestrated by a foreign government, or that materials were available to foreign officials well before they became public knowledge.

A foreign connection could also open Teixeira up to more charges.

So far, Teixeira has been charged with “unauthorized retention and transmission of national defense information” and “unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents or material.” Each charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

According to court documents, Teixeira violated two sections of the Espionage Act. If the government were to establish probable cause, it could add another charge for Teixeira under a separate section of the act that deals with gathering or delivering defense information to aid a foreign government.

The former U.S. intelligence official said that is unlikely to happen at this stage.

The Justice Department is leading the investigation into Teixeira. The Pentagon and the intelligence agencies are also looking into the breach.

The Defense Department closely monitors any employee’s activity on the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communication System, the secure intranet system that houses top secret and sensitive information, including what information is accessed, downloaded and printed.

The Pentagon is also reviewing Teixeira’s records, including his security clearance as part of the investigation, according to one of the people familiar with the probe. DoD hopes that the review will help it decide if changes to procedures regarding access to classified documents need to be made, the person said.

Teixeira is an IT specialist assigned to the 102nd Intelligence Wing, giving him access to the computers of analysts tasked with packaging intelligence for senior military commanders, said a fifth person, a Defense Department official.

The FBI and Justice Department declined to comment. The CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence did not respond to a request for comment.

Some press reporting in recent days has suggested that people from other countries were members of the original server where Teixeira allegedly posted the documents. Others, however, have rejected that assertion. In an interview with The Washington Post, one of Teixeira’s friends said any suggestion that the server’s members were Russian or Ukrainian was “pure fabrication.”

According to another report by The Washington Post, users who interacted with Teixeira on Discord, the social media platform where the documents appeared, thought he posted the materials partly to educate them on how the U.S. government operates in the world and partly to show off his access.

Understanding Teixeira’s motivation is also important for the government in determining how to prevent such leaks in the future.

The leak allegedly carried out by Teixeira is different from past breaches of intelligence, including those perpetrated by Edward Snowden and WikiLeaks. Teixeira is accused of disseminating the documents on social media, instead of packaging and filtering them through the press, and did not appear to publish the intelligence as a result of a specific ideology.

Teixeira allegedly posted the documents to a Discord server last year. In recent weeks, a member of that server posted them to a second Discord group before they began to circulate more widely on other social media sites, including Telegram and Twitter.

The leaked documents include extraordinary detail on troop and battlefield movements by both Kyiv and Moscow in Ukraine as well as other global issues such as Iran’s development of its nuclear program, protests in Israel and China’s relationship with Russia. They also expose the extent to which the U.S. spies on its adversaries and allies.

While POLITICO and many other media outlets have obtained and reviewed more than 50 of the classified documents, there appear to be perhaps dozens of other documents that have not been posted publicly on social media. The Washington Post and The New York Times have exposed several of those documents in recent days.

At least one of the documents posted on Telegram appears to have been altered to include higher Ukrainian and lower Russian death tolls, according to a document reviewed by POLITICO. It’s unclear who altered the documents.

A woman who recently ended her enlisted service in the U.S. Navy told The Wall Street Journal that she oversaw the Telegram channel where the altered documents were posted. That woman, 37-year-old Sarah Bils, has previously posted pro-Russian content on social media but denied having altered the classified document. She also told the Journal she deleted the documents from the channel as soon as she noticed they had been posted.

In an email to POLITICO, Bils said: “I didn’t leak the documents and had no part in that. You’re asking the wrong entity. [The documents] were never in my possession at all.”

While Bils’ link to the spread of the classified documents on other social media sites raises questions about her potential involvement in their alteration, there is no apparent connection between the former sailor and Teixeira.

  • Atiq Ahmed has admitted to links with ISI, Lashkar, says UP Police charge sheet

Atiq Ahmed has admitted to links with ISI, Lashkar, says UP Police charge sheet

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed has confessed that he has direct connections with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, as per the charge sheet filed by UP Police.

“I have no dearth of weapons because I have direct connections with Pakistan’s ISI and terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba. Weapons from Pakistan are dropped on the Punjab border with the help of drones and local connections collect them. Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir get weapons from this consignment. If you take me with you, I can help you recover that money, arms and ammunition used in the incident,” the charge sheet mentions Atiq Ahmed as saying.

This is bound to increase troubles for the gangster whose entire family is listed as his gang members.

    MS Education Academy

The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court on Thursday sent Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf to four-day police custody in the Umesh Pal murder case.

The police custody of the duo started from 5 p.m. on April 13 till 5 p.m. on April 17.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were brought to the CJM Court in Prayagraj on Thursday morning, even as Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad and his aide Ghulam, both of whom were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, were killed in an encounter by Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi on Thursday.

Each of them carried a reward of Rs 5 lakhs and the police claimed that foreign-made weapons were recovered.

On March 28, Atiq Ahmed was convicted by an MP-MLA court and sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in the abduction case of now-dead Umesh Pal.

Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested three people from the national capital for allegedly aiding jailed gangster Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad and planning Umesh Pal’s murder. The three arrested people were identified as Jawed, Khalid and Zeeshan.

During the course of the investigation, Khalid and Zeeshan disclosed that they had also provided shelter to Asad and Ghulam.

Umesh Pal, a key witness to the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party leader Raju Pal and one of his two-armed security escorts was shot dead on February 24. Several rounds were fired and bombs were hurled at Umesh and his gunners.

Meanwhile, official sources said that Atiq Ahmed will not be permitted to attend his son Asad’s last rites and members of his wife’s family may claim the body.

  • Congress accuses Adani Group of having links with Chinese firm

Congress accuses Adani Group of having links with Chinese firm

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday accused the Adani Group of having business links with a Chinese company in all its infrastructure projects in roads, railways, ports and airport sectors, saying it posed a threat to national security.

The remarks prompted Law Minister Kiren Rijiju to hit back at the opposition party.

Responding to a tweet by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Rijiju said, “Do not comment on sensitive matters. The Congress has no moral right to speak about Arunachal Pradesh.”

    MS Education Academy

Ramesh had alleged that business tycoon Gautam Adani has business links with Chinese citizens. He wondered whether it was compromising national security.

The law minister also shared a video in which the then defence minister A K Antony is purportedly telling Lok Sabha that for long India had a policy not to develop borders as an undeveloped border was safer than a developed border.

“First respond to this reality,” Rijiju, who represents Arunachal Pradesh in the Lok Sabha, said.

Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the company, fully owned by a Chinese national — Chang Chian Ting — was a subcontractor for the Adani Group and is a partner of Adani’s brother.

The Adani Group has not made any comments on the charges made by the Congress yet.

The firm had earlier denied indulging in wrongdoing.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also cited a media report and said on Twitter, “PMC Projects – Pradhan Mantri Chinese’ Projects?”

“Why are India’s critical ports, airstrips, railway tracks and electricity lines being built and controlled by a Chinese company?” he asked.

Shrinate said China made several transgressions along the border on the Indian side and killed 20 of our soldiers.

It changed names of places in Arunachal Pradesh thrice, but the links that a Chinese-owned company has with the Adani Group shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special relationship with China. “This is totally anti-national,” she said.

“If this is not a threat to national security, then what is?” she added.

The Congress spokesperson further alleged that Modi gave a clean chit to China because of “this relationship” and that is why, he has not broken his silence yet on either China or the Adani issue.

“The veil now stands lifted,” she said, and asked, “When will the government hold a probe into the Chinese company?”

Shrinate also asked the government to find the source of Rs 20,000 crore alleged to have been found deposited in “shell companies” of the Adani Group.

AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, “Everyday the reason for the PM’s eloquent silence on Chinese is becoming evident. This is largely because of Adani’s intimate links to China. We had mentioned this first on March 3 in the ‘Hum Adanike Hain Kaun’ series and today there are further revelations.”

Congress leader Amitabh Dubey also said the Congress has asked several questions on China and the Adani issue, but the government is yet to break its silence.

“Now this is an issue of national security and they will have to reply,” he said.

  • Russian body armor on the battlefield in Ukraine has links to China

Russian body armor on the battlefield in Ukraine has links to China

    [ad_1]

    china russia history 12519

While it’s unclear if the Russian military’s use of the Klass vests is widespread, it is the first confirmation that Chinese-made protective equipment is being used by Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

The new information highlights how Russia continues to rely on China for help propping up its war effort in Ukraine despite western pressure on Beijing to scale back its support for Moscow.

The revelation also raises questions about how the U.S. plans to address with Beijing the issue of “dual-use items” — commercial equipment that can also be used for military purposes.

“The administration has likely seen a lot of things in the record that are discomforting. But they could say ‘well, it is not a surface-air missile system so maybe we’ll just kind of look the other way on this,’” said Ivan Kanapathy, the former director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia at the National Security Council. “The line is fuzzy by design. And the assessment is being influenced by the U.S.-China relationship, perhaps naively hoping that China isn’t already in the Russia camp,” Kanapathy said.

The Biden administration has so far been hyper-focused on preventing Beijing from sending large amounts of weapons to Moscow — weapons that could significantly alter the course of the fighting on the ground.

But a pattern may be emerging that suggests the administration needs to look more closely at dual-use items. This month, POLITICO reported that Chinese companies linked to the Beijing government were sending commercial assault rifles, drone parts and body armor to Russian entities. The drones have for months been seen on the battlefield.

The Treasury Department declined to comment. NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson said the U.S. has imposed “extensive” sanctions and export controls against companies that have enabled Russia’s war in Ukraine. “We will continue to take action against companies that provide support to Russia’s war effort,” Watson said.

POLITICO reviewed dozens of photos on social media sites and Google as well as several videos published on the Russian site VKontakte of Klass body armor parts. The videos, including one published in November 2022, specifically provide a glimpse into the manufacturing process of the Klass body armor.

Antifragmentation suits, bulletproof vests and textiles and stacks of specialized fibers appear in the clips. The photos, some of which were published on eBay, show the fully constructed Klass vests being sold by Ukrainians who say they captured them on the battlefield in the last year.

It was not clear when those Klass vests were manufactured, or if they included Chinese components, but the import data shows that it’s likely they did.

Klass, based in Moscow, imported parts for the manufacturing of its armored vests from China multiple times in 2022, including in November and December from several Chinese companies, according to the trade and customs data. Those parts included aramid fibers — the same kind of fibers found in Kevlar vests.

The Russian distributor has a long-standing business relationship with Russia’s national guard, the ministry of internal affairs, the federal penitentiary services and other state military units, the data shows. In a press release posted on its website, Klass said it presented its body armor products to the leaders of the ministry of internal affairs in November 2022.

The Chinese companies that shipped the products include Yantai Tayho Advanced Materials Ltd, a producer of specialized fiber, and Beijing Tongyizhong New Material Technology Corp, a seller of polyethylene fiber products, a subsidiary of one of Beijing’s state-owned investment holding corporations.

Neither Klass nor the two Chinese companies responded to a request to comment.

Klass body armor products have previously been recovered from the battlefield in Ukraine before Russia’s invasion in 2022, said Lynn Hughes, an analyst on the research team at Import Genius who first identified the body armor components being shipped from China. The Ukrainian army picked up a Russian ballistic vest manufactured by Klass in 2019, according to a report from Conflict Armament Research published that same year.

Ukrainians who captured the Klass body armor on the battlefield in 2022 are now trying to sell them for money. POLITICO contacted several sellers on eBay — all of whom said they had either served in Ukraine or knew someone who did and that they had taken the Russian vests directly from the battlefield.

“This bulletproof vest was used in the Russian army and was obtained by the Ukrainian military during the counter offensive in the Kharkiv region,” said one of the sellers, who was granted anonymity for security reasons. “During the liberation of the city of Izyum in one of the houses where the [Russians] temporarily lived, they ran away so quickly that they abandoned their things.”

U.S. officials have said they aren’t overly concerned about these “dual-use” items showing up on the battlefield, as Russia has long imported this kind of technology from China.

In response to a question about POLITICO’s initial report March 16 about Chinese companies sending assault rifles, drone parts and body armor to Russia, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby described the relationship between the Chinese and Russian entities as “long standing.” He said the U.S. had not seen evidence that suggested the items had ended up on the battlefield.

“We don’t want anyone to do anything that will help them kill more Ukrainians, period,” Kirby added.

But some of the dual-use items are being used in fighting in Ukraine — and not all of the contracts are longstanding, according to the data.

The 1,000 assault rifles the Chinese state-backed defense contractor sent Russia in the summer of 2022 marked the first time China’s North Industries Group Corporation sent the distributor a large shipment of weapons. The last time it sent the Russian distributor Tekhkrim rifles was in 2018, and it sent only two of them, according to an analysis of historical trade data by C4ADS, a research organization based in Washington.

C4ADS has also studied the use of Chinese drones by Russia on the battlefield in Ukraine. The drones have been widely reported and photographed as being deployed by Moscow during the war. The U.S. sanctioned one of the main Chinese suppliers of those drones last year.

“The administration continues to downplay it because they’ve drawn a red line. Declaring that China has crossed that line is irreversible and necessitates a strong U.S. response. But not declaring it gives China wiggle room,” Kanapathy said. “Xi Jinping is getting that sense, having pushed it little by little. And if the U.S. continues to say, ‘no, we haven’t seen a violation,’ then what is China’s takeaway?”

The Chinese embassy declined to comment.

The Biden administration must decide which exports pose the biggest risk and then whether to penalize individual sellers or take broader action against the Chinese government, a move that would carry broader economic consequences and almost certainly invite retaliation from Beijing.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Commerce Department has imposed export restrictions on hundreds of products that contain American-made components or technology and could be used to support the Russian military. It has also added a long list of companies, including several based in China, to a trade blacklist as punishment for shipping controlled goods to Russia.

And the Biden administration has sought to expand its crackdown on Russia’s access to technologies with U.S. components that can be used for military and commercial purposes since the war entered its second year. In February, the Commerce Department issued new restrictions on a range of products, including toasters and coffee makers, in a bid to further strangle the Kremlin’s supply of semiconductors.

But the products listed in the Import Genius data likely do not contain U.S. materials, making it difficult for the administration to directly stop their shipment to Moscow. The Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on some Chinese companies that have supported Russia’s efforts in Ukraine, but it is not clear they are eyeing the businesses included in this report.

The Commerce Department declined to say whether its officials were aware that Chinese-made body armor has been used in Ukraine or have any immediate plans to target the companies involved in their sale.

“We continually review reports of Russian military equipment used in Ukraine to assess whether there are actions we and our allies can take to impair Russia’s ability to produce or acquire such equipment,” said Commerce Department spokesperson Jessica Stallone. “We will not hesitate to use all the tools at our disposal to obstruct the efforts of those who seek to support Putin’s war machine.”

William Reinsch, a former undersecretary of Commerce for export administration during the Clinton administration, argues it’s impossible for the U.S. to completely cut Moscow off from many exports. Not only are some foreign-made products beyond the government’s reach, but the sale of illicit goods will always be lucrative enough to attract bad actors, said Reinsch, who is now at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“If your policy is zero leakage,” he said, “then you’re doomed and you’re going to fail and you’re going to spend a lot of money trying to stop things that you won’t be able to stop.”

  • Amritpal Singh maintaining close links with ISI, terror groups: Sources

Amritpal Singh maintaining close links with ISI, terror groups: Sources

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who is on the run following a police crackdown, has been maintaining close links with Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and some terrorist groups based abroad, official sources said on Saturday.

Amritpal Singh, who had even issued a veiled threat to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has been trying to destabilise the situation in Punjab by indoctrinating and attracting the Sikh youth into the fold of his outfit “Waris Punjab De”.

The radical preacher is believed to be a close associate of UK-based Khalistani terrorist Avtar Singh Khanda. Khanda is believed to behind Amritpal Singh’s meteoric rise, sources said.

Khanda is a trusted lieutenant of leader of the banned Babbar Khalsa International Paramjit Singh Pamma, who often holds theoretical training classes for the Sikh youth to radicalise them.

The trio have been aiming to destabilise Punjab by ideological indoctrination of the Sikh youth with extremist views, they said.

Khanda gives online demonstrations from Birmingham and Glasgow on how to make improvised explosive devices by using commonly available chemicals.

Amritpal Singh also has links with chief of the International Sikh Youth Federation Lakhbir Singh Rode, who is wanted in India in cases of smuggling of arms and explosives, including RDX, conspiracy to attack government leaders in New Delhi and spreading hatred in Punjab.

When Amritpal Singh was in Dubai, he was in close touch with Rode’s brother Jaswant.

The radical preacher was known for asking his comrades to stay armed and he formed a new group called Anandpur Khalsa Army (AKF). This group is always around him with dangerous weapons, they said.

Amritpal Singh, who was a transport operator in Dubai, came in contact with the ISI there, sources said.

The agents of the ISI believed to have told him to motivate the innocent young Sikhs in the name of religion.

After coming to Punjab, at the behest of the ISI, Amritpal Singh tried to spread the influence of his group ‘Waris Punjab De’.

Later, he launched a campaign called ‘Khalsa Waheer’ and strengthened his organisation by going to villages.

He stirred up the issues of Punjab and started inciting the Sikhs against the Government of India.

He has been successful in getting people to do what he wanted under the guise of religion and this helped the ISI to carry out its design in Punjab, they said.

Amritpal Singh was anointed the head of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ following the death of its founder – actor and activist Deep Sidhu – in a road accident in February last year. The event was held at Moga’s Rode, the native village of slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

A major police crackdown was underway in Punjab against radical preacher Amritpal Singh and his supporters over charges of spreading communal tension in the state.

Piyush Goyal links RRR’s Oscar win to PM Modi; Congress mocks

    [ad_1]

Leader of Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge while congratulating the Oscar winners – The Elephant Whisperers Netflix documentary and Naatu Naatu song from the Telugu-movie RRR – in Rajya Sabha on Monday in a lighter note ‘requested’ Central Government not to take the credit for the wins.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge said, “I also join to congratulate both the awardees – Naatu Naatu and Elephant Whisperers – both of them come from South India. It is a great pride for us. We are also very proud of whatever you have said, we are with you.”

“But my only request is that the ruling party should not take credit saying we have directed, we have written the poem, Modiji has directed the film. That is my only request. It is a contribution of the country,” Kharge said.

His sarcastic remarks were met with roaring laughter from the House, including BJP leaders like Food Minister Piyush Goyal who had earlier drawn a parallel between the Academy Awards and PM Modi’s choice for the Rajya Sabha nominations. Piyush said that the PM’s chose “outstanding personalities” for Rajya Sabha with his “stamp of quality” in the nominations.

In a Facebook post titled “Rajya Sabha Nominations – An Oscar for Prime Minister’s Office”, Goyal listed the names of the nominees for the Rajya Sabha.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has left his stamp of quality in nominating members to the Rajya Sabha by choosing outstanding personalities who have made a mark in diverse fields such as Indian culture, social work and sports,” the minister wrote.

“Shri V. Vijayendra Prasad, the scriptwriter of the film RRR, is one of the several exceptional people whom the Prime Minister nominated to the Rajya Sabha in July 2022. The scriptwriter from Andhra Pradesh has been associated with the creative world for decades. Last year, Prime Minister Modi ji recognised his greatness and said “his works showcase India’s glorious culture and have made a mark globally.” Today, the global spotlight is on ‘RRR’ for winning an Oscar for the original song ‘Naatu Naatu’. This is a global endorsement of the Prime Minister’s choice,” he elaborated.
